push to make sure everyone's voice is heard. >> shops are boarding up. police departments staffing up, many preparing for possible unrest ahead of the election results announced. good morning. it's tuesday, november 5th, election day. yeah. >> let's begin with a check of our election day weather. >> yeah, it's going to be pretty out there, but with a catch because we have our red flag warning. and also right now a wind advisory for the north bay interior mountains later on this afternoon when the winds will be kicking up. see all those clouds to the north? well, that's a system that's going to be dropping way to the south. and the alignment of a low pressure and high pressure offshore will allow for some very gusty winds. so our red flag warning in effect from 11:00 to 7:00 on thursday for pretty much the entire bay area, relative humidity will drop down to 15% and a wind advisory with gusts up to 60 miles an hour here from saint helena out by the delta now above 2500ft, we could see gusts in excess of 70 miles an hour. right now we're in the 40s in the north bay. it's chilly.

50 in san carlos. the winds are light. it's going to take throughout the day for the winds to increase. but they are out of the north and so we are chilly there. nine degrees cooler in livermore. the delta almost 20 degrees cooler. so your forecast to get out and vote today calls for a cool start. 9:00 we're in the low 60s noontime, sunny skies, winds will begin to increase by the afternoon, and then we'll look for temperatures well above average a lot like yesterday. mid to upper 70s. and the fire danger is high for the next several days. gloria. well so far traffic is shaping up nicely here in the bay area. >> we have a live look from emeryville, and you can see it's a little busy, but not too bad this early in the morning. more of those headlights, of course. heading towards the bay bridge. heading in that direction. the drive time you can see on your screen. highway four to san francisco, 26 minutes and looking live at the bay bridge. traffic is moving pretty nicely there as well. it's a pretty easy ride, especially on the upper deck from the tolls across the span into the city. overall,

our map here looking pretty nice, mostly in the green. you do see that slow down tracy to dublin 44 minutes, san rafael to san francisco 16 minutes and to concord, 14 minutes. amanda for president, three for kamala harris, three for donald trump. >> following the national trend, overnight votes were cast at one of the earliest and tiniest locations in the country to report election results. >> vice president harris and former president trump have tied with three votes each in dixville notch, new hampshire. the unincorporated township opened and closed its polls just after midnight eastern time. it's a tradition that dates back to the 1960s for republicans and two undeclared voters participated. and we do want to take a live look at a polling location in maryland this morning. people you see there it is busy. it is 8 a.m. on the east coast and many polling locations have already been

north carolina, focusing on immigration. at each stop, november 5th, 2024 will be liberation day in america. >> on day one, i will launch the largest deportation program of criminals in the history of our country, and trump will be spending election night in palm beach. >> if you haven't voted yet, there's still time and even if you aren't registered, there is still time. abc seven news reporter lena howland is live in san mateo this morning with a look at everything you need to know to make sure your vote is counted today. lena. >> amanda, good morning to you and happy election day. we are at the san mateo public library right now, which is one of about 50 vote centers that will be staying open all day long throughout san mateo county. here you can drop off your ballot, but you can also still register to vote countywide. supervisor david canepa says there are still around 70,000 unregistered potential voters. that's why he spent a part of

monday trying to convince some of those people to vote on election day at manny's cafe in san francisco. the push to get more voters to the polls was more intense than ever. for the past several weeks, these people have been making thousands of calls to voters in the swing state of nevada, all of them trying to convince folks to vote for kamala harris. today i knocked on a door in carson city yesterday with a 23 year old guy that thought the election was next tuesday. >> that means going to a voting center like the one behind me and having the ability to show an id and to, you know, be able to cast their vote. it's a conditional conditional vote, but it's a vote that matters. it counts. >> the chair of the san francisco republican party says since 2020, republicans have registered millions of people across the country and thousands here in california. he believes those voters could be crucial in several important statewide ballot measures, as well as important seats in the house of representatives. now, across the

state today, polls open up at 7:00 this morning, and they will close at 8:00 tonight. if you are voting in person, just make sure that you are in line by 8:00. live in san mateo. lena howland abc seven news. >> thanks, lena. in the south bay, santa clara county is expecting voters to turn out in massive numbers this year. so far, more than 431,000 ballots have been turned in. that's about 41%. >> it's a very long process of checking signatures, opening, flattening, running them through the machines. our ballot counters have already started. we've already counted, i think, over 3000 300,000. so as soon as those 8:00 hits tomorrow night, we'll issue our first results. >> the registrar of voters predicts that 80 to 85% of eligible voters will cast ballots in this election. >> security is high in washington, d.c. this morning, the bay area is also taking precautions. a number of buildings in oakland have boarded up. the police department has also closed a few streets. and gloria, all of this

likely in case protests happen tonight or in the coming days as election results come in. >> that's right. amanda. businesses and building owners in the east bay are gearing up for the possibility of protests, though of course, we do not know what will happen overnight. we saw boarded up windows in downtown oakland. you could see some of those windows boarded up right there. some fences have also been put up around local businesses. abc seven spoke to a worker in downtown who told us her coworkers are concerned about going to work today. while we didn't see protests in 2020, we did see them in oakland in 2016. and you could see right there garbage cans were set on fire, businesses were damaged, and vandalized. the oakland police department issued a statement saying in part, we are providing extra staffing to facilitate people's rights to peaceful gatherings and to address any crime related incidents. the fbi has been active across the country closely, watching all threats as we kick off this election day. and today, the san francisco fbi office is also setting up a

early wednesday. and a relative humidity is going to be bone dry. so it's all due to a system that will be dropping to the south of us with high pressure building in behind it. we'll have that tug between high and low pressure. right now it is 47, in palo alto, 42 in danville, 50s along the coast and pretty chilly up in the north bay with the clear sky. our forecast highlights dry, gusty winds, high fire danger through thursday and for election day today, mainly sunny skies, a few high clouds. the winds pick up by the afternoon. they'll get windiest tonight into early tomorrow. here's a look at the timeline. so notice through the early morning hours relatively light by 10:00. we've got a breeze out there by the delta 2:00 up to 30 miles an hour in spots. and then as we get towards the evening hours and early tomorrow, check this out. there's a wind advisory here. over 40 mile an hour gusts could see 50 to 60 mile an hour gusts and the upper elevations, mount saint helena could see even windier conditions. so we're talking about a time frame

here that will light up our fire danger index. so as we go through this afternoon and evening, you can see how dry the east bay is. the hills lights up into that critical fire range right on through wednesday and mid morning. on wednesday there's a look at our relative humidity right now. look how it drops by the afternoon to about 10%. then it comes up maybe 30%. and then once again dropping back off for your wednesday. still warm out there. some high clouds 75, in concord, a chilly start in the accuweather seven day forecast. three days of a red flag warning and then cooler by the weekend with rain arriving next monday. >> thanks, lisa. an alleged plot to cause an international scare. still ahead, the plan to set off explosives on planes heading to the u.s. and canada and who federal officials believe is behind it. >> and the last thing you're expecting to see on your morning commute. we're hearing from the pilot of the small plane that landed on highway 85, in the middle of rush hour. >> who's ready for ski season? mount rose says they're ready

already seen two accidents in that area. the first happened saturday. a 17 year old was killed and four other people are still missing when their boat capsized north of bodega bay. the search was called off sunday after crews searched over 2100mi■!s. an 11 year old boy is the sole survivor. >> he self rescued, so he was able to make it to shore and stayed the night on the shore. and in the morning he walked up and he was found by passersby on highway one and he survived. it's really miraculous that he that he made it. >> a second boat capsized in the same area early yesterday morning. one person died there, and a second person is still missing. >> this is not what you would expect to see on your morning commute. a small plane making an emergency landing on a busy highway. but that's exactly what

happened on highway 85 in cupertino. gloria brought you a live report yesterday morning. the pilot tells us his engine failed. tower operators tried to guide him to san jose, but it was too far, so he looked for other options. >> i then saw kids running out into the football field. i was trying to make, and i couldn't make that. northbound traffic on 85 was back to back, and nobody would be able to see me coming down on top of them. so i opted to land on the southbound lane. >> no one was injured. it took six hours for crews to remove the wings from the plane to load it onto a tow truck. the pilot says he's sorry for the impact on the morning commute, and the community. >> your voice, your vote in san francisco and ethics commission has fined mayoral candidate mark farrell nearly $110,000 over campaign funds. abc seven news reporter monica madden has the details on that, and what the other candidates were doing on the last day before election day. >> mayoral hopeful mark farrell

playing defense on election eve. the city's ethics commission, alleging farrell took $93,000 in contributions from his political action committee for prop d and used that money in his race for mayor. in a statement, farrell telling abc seven news, quote, we agreed to a settlement for an accounting error that we corrected and publicly disclosed months ago, which led us to terminate our prior legal counsel for this matter. his messaging online focused on the positive. >> i believe we will win tomorrow. >> the other candidates vying for the keys to san francisco also making their closing arguments to voters monday. incumbent mayor london breed has the challenge of persuading voters to give her a second term. >> give me another chance to continue the work that we know needs to be done here. >> with perception problems around the city's biggest issues. breed is focused on optimism. >> it takes a lot of work to run a very complicated, layered, bureaucratic city, and i've been able to remove a lot of barriers and a lot of that is working.

this just didn't happen overnight. it took a lot of hard work, a lot of collaboration, and my hope is that people are starting to see the difference. feel the difference. >> political newcomer daniel lowry vowing to bring change to city hall. >> there's going to be a new era of accountable leadership in city hall. >> the nonprofit executive telling voters he'll be ready on day one. >> i know how that building works. i have a track record of getting big things done, whether it's building housing, whether it's building shelter, both at a fraction of the time and cost. >> board of supervisors president aaron peskin saying he's staying out of the political dog fights while the other candidates are beating up on each other and the city of san francisco. >> we've run a really positive campaign in every neighborhood and every community of this city, and we've really been running on the issues. >> arguing he's most focused on solutions. >> and i'm not only going to combat crime, but i'm also going to combat corruption at city hall with an office of the

inspector general at stake, the city's reputation as leaders work to chart a new path forward in san francisco. >> monica madden, abc seven news. >> tonight, the san francisco department of elections will release a very. the first, i should say, preliminary consolidated general election results. you can see the approximate times listed on your screen. the first report will have results from the majority of vote by mail ballots received before today. after that, votes from polling places will be added to each of the following reports. >> this friday, mount rose will be the first tahoe resort to open for the season. they say there's at least a foot of snow on the runs they're opening, and up to 18in on some. and that's thanks to extensive snow making from machines. they got last year. it's just one of several investments they made ahead of this season, and they've also made some trail improvements and bought a new snowcat to make for a better quality snow surface. >> it's here.

>> people are ready. >> yeah. and, you know, wait till you see one of these maps. i don't know if you noticed, to have a level one for next monday. and this is the early call for precip accumulation. you'll be impressed. okay. and we need it after our high fire danger the next several days. so we're definitely going to do a flip flop thing which much of the nation is doing. you're hot and then you're cool. and this all goes with climate change where we're looking at some very variable conditions. day to day. so we're going to go from extremely dry and switch that up by the end of the weekend. here's a look at the alignment. that's high pressure. and then low pressure will be developing to the south and east of us, allowing for those tight pressure gradients. 51 right now in the east bay over in oakland 44 santa rosa. a red flag warning going into effect 11:00 today through 7:00 on thursday morning. north north and east winds 25 miles an hour with gusts over 55. this is at the surface, so upper elevations. you have a wind advisory. north bay interior mountains, where we could see wind gusts up to 60

miles. an hour. and even greater than that, the windiest time frame. late tonight into very early wednesday. and so if you're getting out to vote toda, it should be breezy to getting windy by the afternoon. but starting out cool with partly cloudy skies and then the winds will increase from about noontime throughout the afternoon. getting gusty us late in the day. so when all the election results are coming in, the weather could be getting a little bit wild out there for today though. notice how they will ramp up those winds. they're all out of the north and they'll continue to stay elevated. so that's why as we look at our fire danger index, it coincides with the strongest winds. you can see sun setting 7:00. and we have still have those yellows, the oranges come reinvigorated through the overnight hours though as those winds will still be blowing. and look at this tomorrow at 1045. we're still looking at some very gusty conditions. here's a look at what we can expect as we go through the rest of the week. notice that those systems coming into play will be pretty

$20 million budget deficit. last night, the district announced the ten schools that may close or consolidate at the end of the school year. abc seven news reporter laura martinez spoke with families who could be impacted by the closures. >> parents and students in san jose are still processing the news. their schools are facing potential closures. honestly, pretty sad because either my siblings or i won't be able to see our friends because it's going to be like different schools. melanie delgado is in the sixth grade at renaissance academy at fisher. it's one of seven schools the alum rock union school district is recommending for closure. now students are thinking, what will this mean for them next year? >> i don't know. lots of kids. i feel like more like nervous. >> the district is citing a steady decline in enrollment nearly ten years ago. they had around 10,000 students. now they have 7200. it was really upsetting that i thought we were

doing good. >> and it's not. >> we spoke with a mom who didn't want to share her name, but has been an active parent at lucia academy, where her son is in the second grade. lucia is one of two schools the district is recommending consolidating, not closing. superintendent herman cerda held an informational meeting monday morning for parents. >> i asked specifically if they were going to keep the staff members. so what he answered was that they were going to look for empty. i don't know, empty space at san antonio and then consolidate lucia. there. >> sarda said the district is facing a $20 million deficit. each school they can close will save them $1 million in operating costs. >> when you submit your budget to the county, you have to show three years that you're fiscally solvent. we are only showing two years. the third year we're bankrupt. >> it's just worries. worrisome.

polling places are now open on the east coast and in the midwest, and we're seeing that they are already quite busy. 130 million americans are waking up eligible to vote this morning. more than 82 million already cast their ballots early. and if you look at the bottom of your screen, you can see we're counting down to abc news coverage of nationwide election results. that begins at 4 p.m. of course, the race the entire nation will be watching, who will be our next president? abc news reporter christiane cordero is live in d.c. this morning. with the way both candidates finished the last day of their campaigns. christiane. >> hey there, reggie. >> good morning and happy election day. former president trump tonight and his campaign will be based out of mar-a-lago, while the harris hq will be right here, where i am in washington, at howard universit. her campaign was a sprint from the start, launching 107 days ago, courting voters on a trail that ended overnight on top of the rocky steps in philadelphia. >> and here at these famous steps, a tribute to those who

start as the underdog and climb to victory, vice president kamala harris was joined by star power throughout her final day on the campaign trail. >> we are voting for values and integrity. >> we are voting for the right to choose what happens to our own bodies. >> she spent months drawing a stark contrast between herself and former president donald trump, then spent the final two days avoiding trump by name. her campaign says to end on a positive note. >> our campaign has tapped into the ambitions, the aspirations and the dreams of the american people, and we know it is time for a new generation of leadership in america. >> trump's campaign has tried to steer focus towards issues related to the economy and immigration. >> are you better off now than you were four years ago? and

i've asked that question so many times i've never had one hand go up for the other. >> but in recent weeks, his message has grown darker. his latest target, while rallying on the eve of election day in battleground michigan, former house speaker nancy pelosi. >> she's an evil, sick, crazy bear. oh no. but i won't say it. >> some republican leaders have warned trump's rhetoric could turn women voters away while former fox news host megyn kelly, who trump viciously attacked during the 2016 campaign, shared her endorsement, echoing what trump has said that he will protect women, quote, whether they like it or not, he will be a protector of women. >> and it's why i'm voting for him. >> all right. and get this. the first results are already in dixville notch, new hampshire has a tradition of voting in person at midnight. all six of

their registered voters, the results were three votes for harris, three votes for trump, a tie. amanda, back to you, christiane. >> thank you so much. now, many people are asking, will we know the election results tonight? and, gloria, it's unlikely we'll have the final answers, but we should have an idea about how things are headed. >> that's right. amanda. tonight we'll get a look at how well each candidate is doing in key battleground states. this is when we'll be able to see how well former president donald trump is performing in traditionally red districts in early win in some of those states could be pivotal for vice president kamala harris. take a look. this is when polls will close in some of those key battleground states, both eastern kentucky and indiana close the polls at 3 p.m. pacific standard time. north carolina and georgia close a four hour time. ohio shuts down polling places at 430. that's followed by pennsylvania at five and by 6 p.m, polls close in michigan and wisconsin. and there are some timing factors that vary state by state that

unregistered potential voters across san mateo county. republicans, too, are trying to turn out their voting base. the chair of the san francisco republican party says since 2020, republicans have registered millions of people across the country and thousands here in california. he believes those voters could be crucial in several important statewide ballot measures, as well as important seats in the house of representatives that the polls are not capturing those new those new registered voters. >> and they will you know, those kinds of folks tend to vote. >> this is one of those few times that i feel like we can actually make a change. it's really easy to think that it doesn't matter, but in reality, it really does. >> remember, you can still register to vote all day long until polls, until the polls close, and get a provisional ballot. just make sure you have a california id or the last four digits of your social security number available. also, make

>> there are also deals to be had this election day. uber and lyft are offering discounted rides to polling places. krispy kreme is giving away donuts in honor of democracy. restaurants like johnny rockets and round table pizza are offering discounts on their meals, and ikea is offering free frozen yogurt. >> today, san francisco's embarcadero plaza could be getting a major update. today, mayor london breed is expected to introduce legislation to get funding to renovate the plaza. possible renovations include a new children's playground, entertainment spaces and a marketplace. the city would partner with real estate investment company bxp on the project. bxp would invest $2.5 million. the city would provide another $15 million to complete the upgrades. >> now a traffic alert for you right now. the metering lights have just flipped on at the bay bridge toll plaza, but there are no major delays. just yet. the traffic pretty much is flowing freely across the bridge to the city, from highway four to san

francisco, 41 minutes. >> visitors to england can soon sign up to get a firsthand look at how the monarchy lives. the guided tours coming soon to buckingham palace. but first, here's lisa. >> okay, we have critical fire weather setting up today as high pressure, a strong area of high pressure it was building in and low pressure to the south of us. it's chilly. there is a fog and some clouds around, but 40s in the north bay, 50s closer to the bay and a red flag warning going into effect 11:00. this morning through thursday. the winds at the surface 20 to 35 miles an hour. and here's how quickly they will ramp up. 11:00 they're getting breezy by the delta by the afternoon. this is 3:00. 30 mile an hour winds. and then as we go through the afternoon and evening hours, they get even stronger. so this is wednesday morning where we have a wind advisory for the interior mountains here. and we could see winds gusting in excess of 50 and 60 miles an hour wednesday night. it's still out of the north, it's still breezy. and then by early thursday things

will dial back. but here's a look at where we could see winds over 70 miles an hour right now. relative humidity 70 to 90%. then by this afternoon we drop off to about 10% in concord. and livermore. and then with those winds blowing all night into tomorrow, another very dry start, and then it gets even drier towards the afternoon. so we'll be watching this closely. and this i've been showing you the past couple of days. so i had some pauses in there, but they came out anyway. we are looking at the yellows and oranges for the next several days, meaning that we're going to see the possibility of fire starts. and if a fire does start, how rapidly it will grow is pretty intense. that could happen and we're hoping it doesn't happen. temperatures are above average in the 70s today with some high clouds and then looking at the temperatures cooling off with rain

afternoon. they've already switched to a northerly component and high pressure and low pressure, battling it out the next several days for a wind advisory in the upper elevations of the north bay. but at the surface, we have the red flag warning 11:00 today. tomorrow into wednesday, and thursday as the winds will eventually ease up. 47 palo alto, 49, in concord, low 40s. here we have some fog at the coast. it's cool, and we're looking at a 24 hour temperature change. that verifies from 3 to 4 degrees cooler from the san carlos airport to morgan hill to livermore and the delta. so our forecast highlights dry, gusty, high fire danger through thursday morning. and for election day, it's sunny. the winds are light till about noon. then they'll pick up to a breeze and then by late in the day tonight they get quite gusty. that lasts throughout the overnight hours. over the weekend we're looking at morning fog drizzle and then by next monday we're talking about some pretty good rain hopefully. so there's a look at the windiest conditions from later on. this afternoon until tomorrow afternoon. and so this is where
