from abc seven live. >> breaking news. >> and that breaking news is out of southern california, where firefighters are racing to stop this explosive wildfire. tonight, bay area fire crews are driving south as this blaze rages out of control. good evening. >> i'm ama daetz, and i'm dan ashley. thanks for joining us. the fire in ventura county turned devastating fast. fueled by extremely dangerous weather that is making it nearly impossible for firefighters to get the upper hand. >> the mountain fire has burned more than 14,000 acres in just a little more than half a day. >> it exploded in size because of santa ana winds, and there is zero containment tonight. it started at around 9:00 this morning near moorpark and took off racing through homes, reducing them to rubble. reporter michelle fisher with our sister station in los angeles, spoke with a homeowner who got out just in time. >> now, when we first pulled up this afternoon, these homes here along this street, they were kind of smoldering. but if you take a look at two properties

here behind me that are just side by side right now, you can see how these winds have really contributed to the flames picking back up tonight. this home here. the owner is steve taylor. we spoke with him earlier as he returned to this property. taking a look for the first time at what he saw. just the devastation here, steve telling me that he's lived here at this property since 1987. >> got a call from my son around 920 saying, dad, there's a fire in moorpark. and i'm like, holy cow. knowing what's happened with the with the winds, because they were howling. so i raced down here, went to the hill up there. i couldn't even walk. the winds were howling. came back down here, got my nephew and his wife with their seven week old baby, and they had no idea what was happening. so we got them out. and then i got up on the roof and the ladder is still right over there. i got up on the roof and started hosing down the roof, and then it just started coming and they started evacuating us. >> these winds are going to continue for at least another 24

hours. so while there are again several homes on either side of steve's property that are still standing right now, hopefully it doesn't become the case where these embers driven by this high wind then, you know, takes one of these properties and then burns them. michelle fisher, abc seven news. >> an extreme weather conditions are fueling this fire, and we are facing the fire danger here in the bay area as well. >> we are abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel is tracking all of that for us. sandhya, we're seeing especially dangerous situation play out tonight. obviously in southern california. >> absolutely. and we're still in the danger zone as well. dan, let's talk about southern california. this is one of the strongest santa ana wind events of the year so far. it's a particularly dangerous situation is what the national weather service is calling it. red flag warnings are in effect for southern california. you can see the smoke from our last visible satellite imagery of the mountain fire just getting blown by the wind off across the ocean. so the red flag warnings

northern part until 11 a.m. southern part of southern california until 7 p.m. tomorrow. gusty winds remain tonight over 60 mile an hour. wind gusts in the hills right now it is 62 degrees near the mountain fire. 11% relative humidity. so very dry and that east northeast which is a downsloping wind gusting to 28 miles an hour. looking at the hourly wind forecast, it is still going to be very gusty even into the morning hours over 30 mile an hour winds at times locally here the winds have really backed off as we look at a live view from our mount tam cam, but still a bit gusty. 27 miles an hour in the oakland hills. red flag warnings still in effect for parts of the bay area as gusts up to 40 miles an hour and low humidity will keep that fire danger elevated until 7 a.m. tomorrow. looking at our local winds over the higher terrain, gusty and really starting to drop off as we head towards tomorrow around midday, i'll be back to let you know exactly when we'll see higher humidity and some rain here in

the bay area. dan. >> all right, sandhya, thanks very much. tonight, more than 24,000 p-g-and-e's customers are without electricity. and our latest round of power shutoffs to prevent fires in napa and sonoma counties are the hardest hit. but this isn't just a problem for the hills. the shutoffs extend to communities in the east bay suburbs. tonigh, abc7 news reporter j.r. stone takes you to one very dark neighborhood in walnut creek. one of the only things we could see on this walnut creek street wednesday night was this led lit dog. >> i guess that's just life. when there's a public safety power shut off, and we had no idea when it was coming. >> really, all of a sudden it's just like i'm making trying to make breakfast for my kids and everything's out. >> that's paige buzzini, who's in the dark with her husband and four kids for the fourth or fifth time since they moved here in march. using a flashlight, paige showed us where her makeshift refrigerator is outside in this case, it's a couple of ice filled coolers. >> my husband and i were just talking about how we feel. kind

of like we're being held hostage because we don't know exactly when it's going to go down. and it's like. like we are, like, literally sitting around with our four kids, like with light bulbs and flashlights everywhere. >> they have no power yet. northgate high school, which is in sight of their home, has no shortage of power whatsoever. >> at this point, because we're kind of new to the neighborhood, i would say we're just more confused and kind of interested in why this is happening, particularly in this neighborhood. >> from his front yard, you can see the massive trees across the street, then the power lines below. the one thing i noticed walking through these neighborhoods where the power's been turned off, is just how dark it is. you wouldn't even be able to see me if it wasn't for this flashlight. it's a reason why boschini says they've attempted to get solar. >> my husband actually is a solar engineer, and we are trying to get solar on the house. but the city is giving us a hard time about permitting on it. >> the good news though, p-g-and-e's says the power should be back on thursday,

single day. >> i will be fighting for you and with every breath in my bod, i will not rest until we have delivered the strong, safe and prosperous america that our children deserve and that you deserve. this will truly be the golden age of america. that's what we have to have. >> president biden is going to address the nation tomorrow regarding the election. >> protesters gathered at uc berkeley tonight for a rally against president elect trump. this was the scene at sproul plaza, the pro-palestinian group held signs denouncing the war happening in the middle east. demonstrators also took a stand for immigrant rights, saying deportations under the trump administration should be stopped by any means necessary. and california attorney general rob bonta is holding a news conference tomorrow to share his preparations for a second trump presidency. in trump's first term, california filed more than 100 lawsuits against his policies. the bay area's lgbtq

community is also taking some steps tonight. abc seven news reporter tara campbell shows you how they're preparing to help vulnerable people from other states. >> we have a responsibility to make sure that we are doing everything we can to protect our people. no matter where they live. >> the executive director of san francisco pride is speaking out in wake of donald trump being again elected president. >> we know during the campaign that the red meat that he threw out was denying trans people medical treatment and our rights. >> and she says when more than 50% of the country votes for someone running on that kind of platform, then trans people rightly are frightened and know that we have to act and they're doing just that. at a board meeting tonight, putting into motion plans to use their platform, we've got to find a way to develop a fund that will allow us to bring people out of red states to states like california.

>> we absolutely have to. >> and san francisco's office of transgender initiatives, doubling down on its commitment to providing a safe haven. >> a lot of us are really fighting for our lives and our we're going to be able to form really strong bonds around that and i think do some really great organizing work. >> and gail chavez agrees there. the executive director of lyric, a local nonprofit providing services to transgender youth for decades, many of whom have fled states with laws targeting the transgender community. >> i will say this lyric will continue to open our doors and keep our doors open for every young person that needs it. >> and they say conversations with other lgbtq plus organizations and beyond are already underway. >> if we are at capacity, do you have space? and just, you know, when we talk about safety, it's not just safety for lyric, it is safety for everyone. >> this is multiple trans serving organizations are coming together thursday for a healing circle in support of one another. tara campbell, abc

his second night in jail following his arrest on child sex abuse charges, torres resigned from the san jose city council after weeks of public pressure to do so. abc seven news reporter lauren martinez looks at the frustration from his constituents. >> we're a 24 hour operation. you work out on these cycles up to three people, maximum. >> david heindel is the co-owner of hot works in downtown san jose, a gym he runs along with his wife and daughter. but as a business owner in district three, heindel doesn't have a city council representative. he can bring issues to. >> i have some issues right now that are sitting on the back

burner because there's nobody there in city hall really to help me with them. >> on tuesday, omar torres, who represented district three on the council, was arrested on child sex abuse charges. the victim came forward as torres was already being investigated in a separate case involving a minor. since the beginning of october, torres has been mia at city hall. right before his arrest, torres resigned. >> people feel betrayed in district three, jeff levine lives in. >> what was torres district of downtown san jose with roughly 85,000 residents. >> so it's a city in and of itself with, with with needs, just like everyone else. >> finding a replacement for torres will take time, mayor matt mehan said. city council will decide whether to appoint someone to the position, or if the city should hold a special election. >> i personally prefer a special election, even though it takes a little more time and costs a little more money. >> i prefer a special election. i know it's about 2 million bucks, but that's the price of

democracy. >> heindel echoed the same sentiment. >> having somebody in there that can represent us well is critical. >> the decision will ultimately come down to a council vote in san jose. lauren martinez, abc seven news. >> prosecutors rested their case in the bob lee murder trial today. he is accused of stabbing and killing lee in the early morning hours of april 4th, 2023. his defense attorneys made a motion for a mistrial today, but the judge denied it tomorrow. the defense has the option of calling their witnesses to the stand, including defendant nima momeni, as someone that's painted a certain way, they want to scream at the top of their lungs, you're wrong. >> and so, yeah, of course he wants to testify. but as his attorneys, we're going to counsel them whether or not that's the right thing to do based on how the trial is going. >> today, the judge also denied a defense motion to acquit momeni. the judge said there is enough evidence to send the case

to the jury. >> we want to bring you some more election news. former san jose mayor sam liccardo has defeated assembly member evan lowe in the race for district 16, in the u.s. house. he'll be the next congressman. liccardo will fill the seat of anna eshoo, who is retiring, he posted on social media, writing in part, quote, i thank evan lowe for his well wishes and congratulations earlier this evening, and i was also pleased to receive a message of congratulations and support from congresswoman anna eshoo and south lake tahoe. >> voters are so far, overwhelmingly saying no to proposed tax on vacant homes and apartments in early voting, 73% have voted no on measure n, 26% have voted in favor. if passed, measure n would have the city impose a $3,000 fine on properties that were vacant for more than half of the year. el dorado county election officials are not expected to release an update on the vote count until friday. >> all right, let's get an update on the weather and specifically the wind that is causing a lot of concern here in the bay area. yes.

>> abc7 news meteorologist sandhya patel has the latest for us. sandhya. >> yeah, we're going to continue to deal with the dry, gusty winds. >> ama and dan. but not nearly as strong as earlier. >> i want to show you some live views from our tower cameras. right now. it is crystal clear across the bay area with the offshore winds, no matter what direction you look. so let's talk about those winds. earlier this morning, mount saint helena hit 88 miles an hour. the peak gusts over 50 at los vaqueros oakland hills 45, mount tam 47 at hawkeye. taking a look at live doppler seven right now. high pressure nudged in behind the departing low. the two close together and as a result, we were dealing with the gusty winds. the same wind pattern that is driving that mountain fire in southern california. looking at our local radar here, it is all quiet, clear skies. but look at the dew points, a measure of the moisture in the air. it is so dry outside in case you're wondering, 18 degree dew point right now. so just really indicating how dry it is

outside. temperatures right now in the 40s to the 60s. as we take a look at a live picture from sutro tower, elevated fire danger with dry, gusty winds into tomorrow morning, friday, lighter winds and fogs back. and then saturday night, going into sunday, we'll have some spotty showers or drizzle during that time period. as we look at the fire danger index moderate to high across some parts of our north bay hills and east bay hills, that's at 1220. so stay alert. still, obviously going into tomorrow morning at 7:00, the fire danger starts to subside and it will remain lower after that morning hour. the red flag warning expires at 7 a.m. midnight tonight. still a little gusty. you could see that over 20 mile an hour winds, but not nearly as strong as earlier going into the wee hours of the morning. and then the winds really drop off across the entire region. half moon bay still a little breezy as we head towards the morning hours looking at the humidity forecast. so here's what's really going to happen. still in the teens at 10 a.m. 16% napa

concord. it's going to take a little bit of time before the humidity recovers. but look at the change friday morning. i mean, when you're at 51% in brentwood and 68 in livermore, this is a good sign. our fire danger goes down as the humidity goes up. 30s to 50s on your temperatures first thing in the morning. clear skies tomorrow afternoon, you're looking at wall to wall sunshine, mid 60s to the mid 70s across the region. and then we're going to fast forward to the weekend. if you do have weekend plans a little bit of drizzle or light showers saturday 9 p.m. going into early sunday morning. it shouldn't affect your weekend plans. monday veterans day though, looks like widespread rain, wet and windy. rain and snow in the sierra. as you can see there through monday night in terms of rainfall through the weekend, we're just expecting a few hundredths of an inch here locally, but when we add on monday's system picking up about 1400 santa rosa over an inch in crescent city, accuweather seven day forecast featuring that high fire danger for the morning hours. it's still dry and gusty.
