his second term in the white house. >> the fbi is now looking into racist text messages sent to black people in several states. officials say the messages invoke slavery. some also mentioning the incoming presidential administration. good morning. it is friday, november 8th. it is friday, >> we're going to first check in with drew for a look at this weather. yes. >> good morning. it is cold out there right now. the payoff will be a nice afternoon. temperatures much colder than we were this time yesterday. you see a lot of 30s out there. we're down to 36 in santa rosa. 35 in fairfield. 37 in ukiah. even around the bay shoreline this morning, we are finding temperatures in the 40s, if not the low 50s right now. so bundle up first thing. but we do have a nice afternoon on the way. a live look outside. this ir sutro tower camera this morning showing you those clear skies out there everywhere. right now we're reporting cloud free conditions just like yesterday. we have a lot of sunshine in store to finish out the week. so let's look at the coastal forecast first. chilly out there right now. later on this

afternoon we'll get those daytime highs in the low and mid 60s. this afternoon around the bay shoreline. even warmer than that. we'll go into the low 70s. but again we have that cold start out there in the 40s. but later today we'll bounce back into the 70s inland. we'll find calm conditions this morning, 30s and 40s. to start your day will max out in the low 70s over the weekend. we do have some drizzle to talk about. we'll show you that coming up in eight minutes. let's check in with gloria. two drive times. >> good morning to you. so , everything is looking pretty good out there on the roads. of course, it's still early. and then friday always tends to be a little bit lighter out there. anyway. but you can see here live. look at our bay bridge toll plaza camera. it is flowing pretty smoothly right now. we do have reports of a fire on the shoulder of the tolls, and the fire crews are there on the scene, but it's not causing any delays at this time. now, from highway four to san francisco. 27 minutes and looking at our overall map, mostly green. other than that usual slowdown at the altamont pass. tracy to dublin 30 minutes right now, san

rafael, the san francisco 16 minutes antioch to concord, 14 minutes. >> reggie thanks, gloria and one of the bay area's most contentious races. we now know that daniel lowery will very likely be the next mayor of san francisco. london breed conceded to lowery at city hall two days after the election. we're expecting to hear from the mayor elect this morning. the latest numbers show lowery is leading with 56% over breed's 43%. abc7 news reporter lena howland is following the mayor's race, and she's in studio. >> reggie. good morning. while ballots are still being processed at city hall, mayor breed is down in the votes and said she didn't see a mathematical way that she could win. that's why only an hour after the latest batch of election results were released, cementing daniel lowery's lead. breed conceded the race, she said she called lowery to congratulate him and to make it clear her team stands ready to support him during this transition. in her concession speech, breed called her past six years in office the greatest honor of her lifetime. she defended her record on crime, saying that san francisco

currently has one of its lowest crime rates in more than a decade, but she wouldn't speculate on why she didn't win. >> i will just say that the campaign has to be behind us, and we need to move forward as a city, we can't look backwards. the voters of san francisco have made their decision, and i, as a mayor of san francisco, have always respected the voters and honor the decisions that they made. >> lowery was the only top candidate from outside san francisco politics, never holding a position in local government. the philanthropist and nonprofit founder thanked voters. his campaign team and family last night. in a statement, he said no matter who you supported in this election, we stand united in the fight for san francisco's future and a safer and more affordable city for all. joined by his supporters, lowery is expected to make his first public announcement since becoming mayor elect this morning at 11. live in studio lena howland, abc seven news. >> all right. thanks so much.

what changes might daniel lowery have in store for san francisco during the campaign? he told us he is going to start at city hall. >> day one of our transition is i'm going to sit down every single one of the major department heads and really going to tell them that they need to re-interview for their jobs. you know, i have other opponents that are telling you all how many people they're going to fire. i don't believe that that's true leadership. there's going to be a lot of changes during the transition period. there's going to be a lot of fresh faces. we need to clean house in some areas of city hall. we all know that. even the incumbent has said things like that. >> lori will be the first elected san francisco mayor since 1911, who's never served in government. you can watch this full conversation and read up on lori's policies at abc7 news.com. >> in the east bay, it appears oakland will also be getting a new mayor. xiang tao headed toward a recall with yes votes outpacing no nearly 2 to 1. the

race hasn't been called, but should these results hold? city council president nikki fortunato bass will become the interim mayor. another recall on track to pass pamela price could soon be ousted from the alameda county district attorney's office. the percentage is identical to the oakland recall, except the entire county is deciding price's fate. should she get recalled, it will be up to the alameda county board of supervisors to choose a replacement for election results for races. all across the bay area and beyond, go to abc7 news .com. and in his first appearance since president elect donald trump's decisive win, president biden promised a peaceful transition of power. >> we accept the choice the country made. i've said many times, you can't love your country only when you win. >> in his remarks, the president defended his record and vice president harris's campaign. he also invited trump to a meeting at the white house to begin the transition. trump's swing state

sweep continues overnight. abc announced its projection that trump won the vote in nevada. the president elect and his team are preparing possible executive actions he could take on day one. sources familiar with the planning tell abc news they're focused on trump's main campaign issues, including immigration and tariffs on foreign products. >> the president elect wasting no time filling seats in his administration, trump naming susan wiles his chief of staff. she was on stage during his victory speech. wiles has been in politics for decades. she was trump's campaign manager for this election and worked on his campaigns in 2016 and 2020. also, wiles will be the first female chief of staff in u.s. history. a race to trump proof california top state leaders say they are y for donald trump's potentially sweeping plans when he becomes president in january. trump has promised to take action with mass deportations of undocumented immigrants. he's also talked about challenging california's abortion, climate and gun control policies.

attorney general rob bonta says for months, he's talked to attorneys general and other states, preparing, planning and strategizing for a possible trump return to the white house. >> if trump attacks your rights, i'll be there. if trump comes after your freedoms, i'll be there. >> governor newsom is convening a special session of the state legislature to quote, safeguard california values and fundamental rights in the face of the upcoming trump administration. there are indications those california values are held by fewer californians. the latest returns show 40% of californians voted for trump tuesday. compare that to 34% in 2020. federal authorities are trying to figure out who is sending out racist text messages to black people around the country. >> the eerie messages even call people by their names. gloria is at the live desk with more on the text. and who is receiving

them. >> black men, women and children in over a dozen states, including california, received text messages saying they've been selected to, quote, pick cotton. new york's attorney general says some of the texts targeted middle school, high school and college students, and the text says, quote, be ready at 12 p.m. sharp with your belongings are executive slaves will come get you in a brown van. be prepared to be searched down. once you've entered the plantation, you are in plantation group w. a virginia man said he receivd the text and was shocked to see it included his first name. >> the first text i saw was somebody texted me greeting me. first of all, greetings and we will be there to pick you up for a cotton field. i feel like it's just a spam message, but i do feel disappointed about the message that they're sending. a day after the election, authorities believe the senders used the service text. >> now it allows people to create random phone numbers for free. text now has shut down the

accounts of the people involved. law enforcement is investigating, but it's not clear if the source is domestic or foreign. live in the studio gloria rodriguez, abc seven news. >> thanks, gloria. 509 this morning, looking at the morning planner. we have some chilly temperatures out there right now. 30s and 40s and a lot of cities. so it's certainly a cold start to our friday, but we'll rebound throughout the morning. we'll see 50 by 8 a.m. and then into the 60s closer to 10 a.m. with 70s on our way later on this afternoon. so looking at your planner, your sunrise here, coming at 643 this morning, it is chilly. first thing, but we get that warm sunshine later on today. by 4 p.m. we'll be in the mid 60s along the coast. 70s for the bay, shoreline and inland communities. it's just going to be a really nice afternoon. some clouds do fill in later on this evening after the sun goes down. just partly cloudy conditions by 8 p.m, a high of 70 in oakland today we'll go to 73 in san jose, 68 in the city, 73 in santa rosa,

about 72 in concord. and then along the coast, another sunny day looking bright. we'll have 60s for half moon bay and into santa cruz. so looking at the three day forecast today, with a lot of sunshine out there tomorrow you will notice clouds streaming in ahead of a cold front. so saturday is partly sunny, but still very comfortable. by sunday we are tracking some morning drizzle that will bring us a few drops out there, so here's future weather. planning out the weekend saturday. no problems with any moisture. it's just a partly sunny da, but by sunday early in the morning, here's 3:00 am sunday. we'll see some pockets of drizzle if not light rain first in the north bay. then as the sun comes up here, some more drizzles falling before this front moves through, leading to a drier afternoon on sunday. but monday, even more rain is coming our way. we'll talk about that in a few minutes. reggie. >> drew, thank you. the ongg battle over oakland airport's renaming. coming up, the argument now happening in front of a judge, and a wind driven wildfire in southern california continuing its destructive path. >> this morning, fire crews

across the state are rushing to the fire as thousands remain under evacuation orders. >> 43 monkeys escaped from a research facility on the east coas

and acres in ventura county and is only 5% contained. officials say the flames have wiped out more than 130 structures, and most of them are homes. residents forced to evacuate say the fire was moving so fast they had almost no time to get out. >> we didn't. we walked out with nothing. everything got destroyed. we didn't have time to do anything but leave it. the fire moved so fast. the wind was so fast you couldn't even move it. i've never seen winds. i've been here for 45 years. >> at least ten people are hurt, most of them from smoke inhalation. nearly 10,000 remain under evacuation orders.

meteorologists in the area say that the dry, windy conditions caused the fast spread of the fire. yesterday are going to return next week. >> back in the bay area, the first barriers have been installed in san francisco's union square to try and deter crash and grab robberies. these bollards are now outside the dior store. last week, mayor london breed announced a program to speed up installation of barriers to prevent thieves from crashing into union square businesses. it's unclear if these bollards are a result of that program, or if they were already in the works. and the debate over oakland's airport now. the name now being played out in court. a judge heard arguments in san francisco's lawsuit over the renaming. the city is suing the port of oakland after it renamed the city's airport san francisco bay oakland international airport. here's abc seven news reporter tim johns. >> the battle over the renaming of oakland's airport made its way to federal court thursday afternoon, court documents show. the city of san francisco believes the airport's recent

name change to san francisco bay, oakland international airport violates its long standing trademark and causes confusion among travelers. inside court attorneys for the port of oakland, which runs the airport, argued that that was untrue and that the name simply helps identify oakland airport with the bay area region. the debate has also gotten the attention of several airline analysts, including locally based henry heartfelt. >> a source at one airline has told me that his carrier routinely sees a couple of people a week showing up at sfo when they booked flights out of oakland. >> harteveldt says the airport's renaming is an attempt by oakland leaders to attract more travelers and money to the east bay hub, but he questions whether or not it will actually work. >> we're not going to add or drop flights to okay based on its name, just as we wouldn't add flights to another airport based on its name. they add flights or delete flights based on the financial performance at

sfo. >> we spoke with several travelers thursday that included brad hurst, who tells us while he understands oakland airport's desire to attract more passengers, he doesn't think the name change is the way to do it. >> if anytime you change a name, i think it's kind of dumb because if you've been known for you know what? how many years? why change it? >> after hearing arguments thursday, a judge said he would issue a written opinion at a later time in san francisco. tim johns, abc seven news. >> today is the start of san francisco restaurant week. it runs today through next sunday. there are plenty of dining options available, from comfort food to high end dining. participating restaurants are offering meals with fixed price points. lunch courses are priced from 10 to $45, and for dinner, meals start at $30 and can go up to $90. you get updates and see what restaurants are participating. if you go to eat, drink sf, their instagram page. >> get a good deal. i know, i just want lunch, it said more than 200 participants. yeah. san

francisco has a lot to choose from. yeah, you probably want to make reservations if you're going to, because they'll probably get pretty booked up. thousand percent. yeah. the weekend is looking pretty nice. we just have some drizzle to talk about sunday morning. but today it's all about some cold weather first thing. we're down to 43 right now in redwood city. 41 in santa clara. the same in half moon bay, but even colder air is in the north bay. look at all these 30s from ukiah to sonoma, saint helena, fairfield, danville, down to 38 degrees. so it's chilly out there right now. but again this afternoon it's going to feel very nice with lots of sunshine. here's future weather or cloud free throughout the day. temperatures by 9 a.m. we're starting to feel a bit better warming into the 50s by lunchtime. some 60s and low 70s on the board, and then later on today, we'll keep our warmest areas in the low to mid 70s, 60s and 70s around the bay shoreline. so highs today, lots of sunshine to finish out the week 68in antioch, but 72 for concord. the same in san rafael, 73 in santa rosa, 70 along the peninsula from san mateo to palo alto,

a high of 70. in oakland as well. overnight tonight, again, another chilly night, but we will notice some high clouds streaming in as a cold front gets closer to us. overnight lows again, basically in the 30s and in the 40s. here's live doppler seven along with satellite. we are seeing calm conditions across california. the red flag warning in southern california is about to expire. the winds are relaxing in southern california, so that's good news for firefighters fighting the mountain fire in ventura county. what we're watching now is this area of low pressure right here that will move through over the weekend, but it will bring us just some light drizzle at best in the area. so here's a look at the storm impact scale. monday is the day we're really focusing on for some widespread light rain. it's a level one light storm on the abc seven storm impact scale. your biggest impact? some slick travel out there as the roads get wet and the winds will be breezy to gusty at times. likely some winds about 20 to 40mph. so here's a look at the rainfall estimates as we

xcx and chappell roan. swift is currently tied with barbra streisand for the most all time nominations by a female artist for album oe year. beyonce stands to earn her fifth album of the year nod for cowboy carter. >> in today's gma first look, officials in argentina have charged three people in the death of former one direction singer liam payne. here's abc news reporter eva pilgrim in this morning's gma first look, a major development in the liam payne death investigation. >> the story of my officials charged a hotel employee a drug supplier and one of payne's friends. one of the three is an american citizen. according to prosecutors, one hotel employee is accused of supplying payne with cocaine twice during his hotel stay. another person accused of supplying drugs to the singer twice during his time in argentina, and the third, prosecutors say, was with the pop star every day while he was

to hear from the mayor elect in a few hours. the election is not certified, but numbers show lowery has a solid lead with 56% over breed's 43%. abc seven news reporter lena howland following the mayor's race and joins us live in the studio. good morning lena. >> good morning reggie. you could hear the sadness in mayor breed's voice in her concession speech, saying that being mayor of san francisco has been the greatest honor of her lifetime. remember, breed was thrust into the spotlight the night former mayor ed lee died. back in 2017, she became acting mayor in the middle of the night, and was later formally elected to the seat, serving more than six years in total. while ballots are still being processed at city hall. mayor breed is down in the votes and said she didn't see a mathematical way that she could win. she called lowery yesterday to congratulate him and make it clear her team stands ready to support him during this transition. as to why voters opted for lowery over breed. here's abc seven news insider phil matier. >> in this race, it wasn't so

>> today, donald trump is preparing for his return to the white house with his first hire by his side campaign manager turned chief of staff siouxsie wiles, one of trump's most trusted advisers. >> siouxsie likes to stay sort of in the back. let me tell you, the ice maiden, we call it the ice maiden. >> wiles will be the first woman to hold the powerful chief of staff position. trump calls her tough, smart, innovative, universally admired and respected. trump is also moving quickly to crack down on illegal immigration. sources tell abc news one of trump's first orders of business will be to rescind any biden administration policies that expanded opportunities for migrants to live and work in the u.s, and that they're focused on how to carry out his promise of launching the largest mass deportation operation in american history. sources say the operation would initially target undocumented immigrants who have committed crimes. the average cost of deporting one undocumented immigrant is nearly $11,000. one advocacy group claims a one time mass

in the bay area says his growing support in california sends a strong message. though some of trump's comments have been called out for being racist and misogynistic, supporters we spoke with say they don't believe that's who trump really is, one of his local supporters says she was born in kenya and is now a u.s. citizen living in san francisco. she says her support stems from social policy. she believes trump will deliver on. >> all i want to do is make america great again. like the only black girl who's very big on trump. >> but donald trump, you saw, first of all, a man who's committed to the development of the working people of america, and he's committed to world peace. >> political pundits say trump also may have picked up support in california due to a general feeling of people wanting chang. >> experts say the new trump administration may offer more than just cash benefits for silicon valley, and the future of tech. abc7 news south bay reporter dustin dorsey explains

how things could change in january if the bay area was its own country. >> it would be the 17th largest in the world, and as the home of talent, innovation and technology, silicon valley would be the driving economic force. experts are hopeful that its role could become even greater with the trump presidency. jim wunderman is the president and ceo of the bay area council. >> i think a lot of folks in silicon valley are really hopeful that this will be a new day for them. and, you know, we need to help technology all we can. >> kris farmer is the ceo of signalfire, a venture capital and technology firm based in san francisco. he says right now, antitrust laws higher taxes and overregulation are stifling innovation, especially in the still growing field of ai. last year, president joe biden signed an executive order that placed guardrails around ai development. while not providing details. trump has promised to dismantle that framework on day one, and farmer believes the trump administration could help clear regulatory hurdles,

highway four to san francisco. 33 minutes, and we'll keep tracking it for you throughout the morning. as traffic continues to build. guys. >> all right. thanks so much, gloria. a controversial vote today could raise gas prices. the state is trying to cut planet warming emissions by requiring cleaner fuel. the california air resources board, known as carb, is set to vote on a plan that would speed up that process. problem is, carb staff have found the plan could increase gas prices by $0.47 next year. the agency has recently backpedaled on that estimate, saying they can't predict prices, claiming californians will save on fuel in the long run. >> a potential 50 cent increase just seems like it will be a huge burden on california consumers, and unfortunately, the prices of fuel and diesel impact absolutely everything.

with san jose's berryessa union school district say they don't have enough students to keep every campus open, and it's the latest of several districts across the bay area to announce possible school closures. >> abc seven news reporter lauren martinez lays out the district's plan and spoke with impacted families. >> students and parents are rallying to keep their public schools open. >> i am feeling really sad and really disappointed that any school, any, any child within this district has to be relocated. >> the berryessa union school district in san jose is looking to close three of their 13 campuses. the district tasked an advisory committee with
