20,000 acres. >> michael: more than 200 homes and buildings have been damaged or destroyed, and thousands of people ordered to evacuate. matt gutman is in the fire zone in ventura county for us. good morning, matt. >> reporter: the only way to grapple with the scale of the devastation in this neighborhood is to drive through it. these houses incinerated like match sticks one after the other on this street. it happened so quickly firefighters realized they could not save the homes anymore. had to focus solely on saving lives. and it worked. so far no reported fatalities. this morning ventura county under a state of emergency as the so-called mountain fire west of los angeles exploded in size. >> the fire is still very dangerous. the winds have not completely ceased. >> reporter: the fire growing to over 20,000 acres in just 36 hours. lower winds on thursday allowed

president-elect selecting susie wiles to become his chief of staff. she is a long time republican adviser that has been quietly working on his campaign for four years. it's hard to find anyone more critical of his success than susie wiles. this morning donald trump is hitting the ground running for his second term, officially announcing susie wiles, his campaign co-chair as his white house chief of staff. >> susie likes to stay in the back. let me tell you. the ice man. we call her the ice man. >> reporter: she would be the first female white house chief of staff in u.s. history. trump praising her as tough, smart, innovative and universally admired and respected. wiles, daughter of sportscaster and nfl player pat summerall has been a powerful gop adviser for year. credited with helping getting florida republicans like senator rick scott and governor desantis elected in 2018. desantis fired her and she would later go on to lead trump's campaign to defeat him in the primary. wiles is known for running a

tight ship, staying out of the spotlight. striking a balance of letting trump be trump, but steering the campaign back to focus on the issues, the economy, inflation and immigration. trump's team already moving quickly to execute his day 1 priority. a crackdown on illegal immigration. focusing on how to immediately launch trump's key campaign pledge, mass deportation of the estimated 12 million undocumented immigrants. according to some experts mass deportations could cost an estimated $88 billion a year and send inflation spiking as millions of workers are removed from the work force. trump dismissing cost concerns saying there's no choice adding in an interview, they're not staying here. there is no price tag. at the white house, president biden pledging a smooth transition. >> on january 20th, we'll have a peaceful transfer of power here in america. >> reporter: after democrats crushing defeat across the country, biden urging supporters to accept the results and move forward. >> we accept the choice the

country made. i have said many times, you can't love your country only when you win. >> reporter: the white house insisting the president does not regret his decision to step aside or that he did it so late in the campaign. the president offering only praise for his vice president. >> she gave her whole heart and effort. she and her entire team should be proud of the campaign they ran. >> reporter: of course, president-elect donald trump expected to travel to washington to meet with president biden at the white house in the coming days. as president-elect, donald trump also entitled to receive classified intelligence briefings. this morning we are told as part of this agreement to accept this role as chief of staff, susie wiles wanted to make certain she could still play the role of gatekeeper, keeping oversight over who has control or who is going into the oval office, trying to avoid some of the chaos that we saw in the first administration, george. >> george: we are seeing a group of democratic governors mobilize trying to trump proof their state.

>> reporter: he has not been sworn in yet but you have a handful of democratic governors that are trying to brace for any potential policies. california governor newsom, illinois governor saying they are ready to call lawmakers back into a special session trying to safeguard any type of curtail against reproductive rights, gun reform and any environmental regulations, george. >> george: rachel, thanks. rebecca? >> rebecca: we turn to sources telling abc news that chinese spies hacked into the cell phone of one of trump's top attorneys. our senior investigative correspondent aaron katersky is here with details. good morning, aaron. >> reporter: good morning. this hack helps illustrate just how far chinese spies will go to eves drop on prominent american officials and people closely tied to them. multiple sources tell abc news hackers working for china's intelligence service broke into a phone belonging to trump's lead criminal defense attorney todd blanch. the sources say the chinese sackers gained

access to his text messages. even captured audio recordings of some of his calls. most were with family and friends but the fbi is working to determine whether more sensitive communications were also compromised. blanch was targeted as part of a sweeping chinese cyber espionage campaign. abc news also reported they attempted to hack phones used by trump himself, jd vance. and people affiliated with the harris campaign. the hackers infiltrated telecommunications firms verizon, lumen and at&t pursuing american secrets that could help china gain economic, military advantage over the united states. this morning, george, at least one government agency, the consumer financial protection bureau, is telling employees they should only communicate nonpublic information using microsoft teams or cisco web x. george, stay off the phone. >> george: real threat out there. we're going to turn now to reaction to donald trump's victory. vladamir putin is among the global leaders congratulating him.

speculation grows as how he will handle the war with ukraine. chief foreign correspondent ian pannell is tracking the latest from london. >> reporter: he's spoken to around 70 world leaders but missing from that list is vladamir putin. the russian leader giving a major speech overnight, sounding upbeat in the wake of trump's victory, claiming a new world order is now taking shape. putin congratulating trump saying he's ready to meet the president-elect. also praising his response to that attempted assassination saying he was courageous and a real man. trump is committed to ending the ukraine war. the haggling has already begun. zelenskyy saying it's unacceptable to make concessions to russia in exchange for a potential peace deal. trump promising to bring peace to the middle east. his victory seen by israel as a green light to continue its wars. last, the selling of china, trade in taiwan thorny issue.

president xi calling trump saying the u.s. and china gain from cooperation, lose from confrontation. trump's promises seem to make confrontation all the more likely. michael? >> michael: ian, thank you very much. now breaking news overnight from philadelphia about a potential strike that would bring mass transit in the city to a halt. stephanie ramos is in philly with the latest. good morning stephanie. >> reporter: michael, good morning. a strike avoided for now. the transport workers union local 234 which represents more than 5,000 workers have agreed to continue talks after the agreement between the two entities ended at midnight last night. here's what the president of the union said in a statement overnight. we're willing to go the extra mile and grant additional time to reach a fair agreement. however, let me be clear, if septa's managers fail to meet our demands, we will be on the picket line. now, if the union were to strike, about 5,300 workers would take to the picket line, bringing mass transit in philadelphia to a halt while also affecting

commuters in south jersey and wilmington, delaware. here's what employees are fighting for. better wages with safety and security issues at the center of their concerns. they're asking for bulletproof vests, bulletproof enclosures and more police presence citing on going violence in the city. it is unclear how long a strike could last, but commuters are breathing a sigh of relief this morning, as this strike has been avoided for now, george. >> george: thank goodness for that. okay, stephanie. now the investigation over alarming numbers of text messages sent in several states. chief justice correspondent pierre thomas has the story. good morning, pierre. >> reporter: george, good morning. it's a mystery as to who sent those racist text messages to people around the nation in recent days. authorities in more than a dozen states say residents, including children, received texts from unknown numbers telling them they've been selected to, quote, pick cotton. a man in virginia got one saying he was shocked they knew his name. he is an african-american, as are many of the other victims.

his text reading be ready at 12 p.m. sharp with your belongings. our executive slave will come get you in a brown van. be prepared to be searched down once you enter the plantation. you're in plantation group w. the sender's numbers were visible and the new york attorney general said some of the texts were targeting middle school, high school and college students. the company text now service that allows people to create phone numbers for free said it's aware of the messages and that it has shut down the accounts of those involved. law enforcement is investigating, but it's not clear if the source is domestic or foreign. rebecca. >> rebecca: all right, pierre. thank you for your reporting on that. we turn now to an abc news exclusive with the highway worker who narrowly avoided being hit by an on coming box truck. trevor ault is here with the story. incredibly troubling, scary images there, trevor. good morning. >> good morning, rebecca. we often see signs about traffic fines doubling in work zones because crashes like these can be really dangerous. this morning we are hearing from

that road worker who narrowly avoid disaster. watch the dramatic moment a truck narrowly misses a road worker on a new york highway. >> i looked down at the right time and got out of there at the right time. >> reporter: 61-year-old chuck ellerson tells abc news how he averted what could have been a tragedy. >> tried to get out of the way the best i can. i thought it was close enough where it would have done a lot more than what it did. >> reporter: he is a highway maintenance worker. he said he'd been collecting trash on that road when a box truck darted in his direction. >> next thing i know, i said this guy is not gonna miss me. >> reporter: dash cam video shows the truck crashing into the work area, demolishing one of the vehicles. ellerson narrowly escaping uninjured. >> i dive into the ditch a little bit. grabbed my hard hat, put it back on. sat there, tried to catch my senses for a long time. >> reporter: the department of transportation tells abc news new york state police are investigating the incident and

officials charged a hotel employee, a drug supplier and one of payne's friends. according to prosecutors one hotel employee is accused of supplying payne with cocaine twice during his hotel stay. another person accused of supplying drugs to the singer twice during his time in argentina. the third, prosecutors say, was with the pop star every day while he was there, is charged with abandoning a person following death. the pop star fell from the third floor balcony of his hotel room in argentina last month. a toxicology report showing payne had alcohol, cocaine and a prescription anti-depressant in his system. prosecutors ruling out self-harm of any kind, stating the singer was not fully conscious or was experiencing a state of noticeable decrease or loss of consciousness at the time of the

fall. ♪ the story of my life ♪ reporter: the arrests come after sources tell abc news nine raids were conducted earlier this week which included the homes of two hotel employee, two escorts and one of the singer's friends. authorities seizing potential evidence including cell phones, marijuana, one hard drive and three laptops. payne's father leaving argentina wednesday, flying back to the u.k. with his son's body. and this has been what you can only imagine was an excruciating process for payne's father, to bring his son home. the family now preparing for his funeral, guys. >> rebecca: something no family should have to or want to go through, eva. thank you. we turn now to james van der beek. the dawson's creek star is sharing about his colorectal cancer diagnosis. >> this interview was deep. van der beek is one of a group of younger people being diagnosed with colorectal cancer.

now he is speaking about getting the shocking news last year and opening up about the journey his family never expected. this morning james van der beek an open book. >> it was stage 3 colorectal cancer. >> reporter: in an interview with "people" magazine, the 47-year-old dawson's creek star saying he under went a colonoscopy after experiencing some symptoms. >> as i was coming out of the haze, the gastroenterologist said, in the most pleasant bedside manner, it is cancer. and i think i went into shock. >> reporter: der beek, a father of six, said his diagnosis ushered in the most challenging chapter of his life. >> and thus began the full-time job of having cancer. signing up for all the various medical portals, getting on the phone with insurance, creating

appointments. i was not prepared for how much of a full-time job it really is. >> reporter: his wife kimberly right there by his side. >> i don't get through this without her. >> reporter: scans revealed a silver line. his cancer had not spread. ed >> i really didn't feel like this was gonna end me. i really felt like this is gonna be the biggest life redirect. i'm gonna make changes that i never would have made otherwise. i'm gonna look back on a year, five years, 30 years from now and say, thank god that happened. >> reporter: according to the american cancer society, about one in 23 men and 1 in 25 women will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer in their life time, roughly 150,000 cases each

ingredient from nasal decongestant. erielle reshef is back with details. >> good morning. as we hit cold and flu season, you may be tempted to reach for a popular over the counter decongestant. the fda says not so fast. a panel of experts is proposing to remove an active ingredient in medications like sudafed, dayquil, tylenol cold and flu saying it doesn't work for solving that stuffy nose. the fda has said the other ingredients are not dangerous it's just ineffective and other ingredients can still help address aches, fever and cough. a better alternative for congestion could be nasal spray or drops. for now, this is just a proposed order so companies can continue to market and sell these products. the fda is inviting public comment. after that, researchers could issue a final order which would mean these medications can no longer contain this ingredient at all. in the mean time the bottom line here experts say you don't have to toss out that over the counter decongestant that may be

rolling up their sleeves and becoming electricians, mechanics, truck drivers and farmers. comes as college debt hits an all time high more than $1.7 trillion. we spoke to several women who told us they are reaping the benefits of taking a different path. move over four year college. many young women are turning down that traditional degree for trade schools, pursuing the promise of up to six figure salaries as electricians and car mechanics. 34-year-old shawna irving thought she would always be a veterinarian but the threat of student loan debt was too intimidating. >> i thought to myself, i don't think i want that for myself. >> reporter: vocational school enrollment up 16% last year getting a boost from gen z dubbed the tool belt generation with a growing number of young women part of that trend. according to the department of labor, 11.6% of those who completed apprentice ship programs in 2020 were female.

inspired by her dad, who works in construction, shawna is an electrician for local union number 3 in new york city making $62 an hour. she's also president of the union's women's club. >> i'm absolutely thrilled that i am in this industry. i love what i do. >> reporter: 39-year-old ace jones is enrolled at bidwell training center in pittsburgh learning medical coding and billing. trade school was attractive because her program is free and includes assistance with job placement. extra helpful since her husband is deployed with the marines and about to retire. >> i figure i would fill in that gap and help him transition by getting back into the work force. >> shawna tells us she's seeing more and more women getting involved on the job site. experts say social media has made a big difference here making the trade industry more accessible by offering a real time visual window into this work. lot of women say this is so fulfilling to sink their teeth
