it'll change. clearly, having the highway patrol present, it changes our discipline and our behavior. >> tonight, governor newsom is extending the chp enforcement surge in oakland. it was set to expire this week. good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley and i'm kristen z. >> it's a move that newsom says is necessary to maintain public safety following tuesday's election. and those who support the chp point to the thousands of arrests that have already been made. >> but still others are concerned about overpolicing. abc seven news reporter anser hassan has the story. >> the chp was called in to help crack down on crime in oakland, and it's working, says oakland city council member noel gayo. >> not only dealing with the crime, high crime issue, but also dealing with those of us that are running through red lights, speeding around schools and creating other difficulties.

>> governor gavin newsom began the chp deployment, including specialized units, in february. since then, close to 1200 arrested more than 2200 stolen vehicles, recovered 124 illegal firearms seized. >> you know, i was lieutenant here in 21 or 2021, 2022, and it was it was bad. but coming back here in 2024, there was definitely an uptick in crime. so it was definitely needed. >> but some community-based organizations believe the money would be better spent on violence prevention programs. and despite the number of arrests, are raising concerns of overpolicing. >> the chp has a terrible record in terms of being racially biased. people of color, motorists of color are more likely to be stopped and when they are stopped, they're more likely to be assaulted. >> in a statement to abc seven news, oakland mayor shengtao says the chp surge frees up oakland police to respond to service calls. but christine soto deberry argues the chp surge is only necessary because

oakland police have been ineffective. >> i don't know if chp has to be the answer, but at a moment when oakland pd is performing so poorly, it leaves the governor with not that many choices. >> deberry is with the prosecutor's alliance, a statewide organization focused on improving the criminal justice system. she points to this report, released in october by the center for juvenile and criminal justice. it finds that despite the massive increase in funding, police are solving fewer crimes. >> oakland police department is solving only 3% of violent crime and 0.1% of property crime as part of the surge. >> california attorney general rob bonta sent extra attorneys to assist the alameda county district attorney's office. it's not known how many cases have been involved as a-g. bonta's office did not respond to requests for more information. in oakland, anser hassan, abc seven news. >> we're hearing new reaction tonight to san francisco unified students receiving racist text messages. these students are among the victims in more than a

dozen states that were targeted. the messages come from unknown numbers, with the message they've been selected to pick cotton at the nearest plantation. in a statement, san francisco unified says hate will not be tolerated, and it's providing wellness support to any student on the receiving end of the text. the district says it will cooperate with any law enforcement investigation into the messages. >> we're going to turn within and make sure that we take care of our children and that we keep our communities safe from this uncivilized behavior. >> this afternoon, san francisco mayor elect daniel lurie put out a statement on x saying he's spoken with reverend brown and he stands with community leaders in condemning the messages that may. according to early investigation and the louisiana attorney general saying that some of these text messages originated from poland. >> the conversation with brown,

just part of a day long victory tour for lurie. abc seven news reporter monica madden was there as he spoke with supporters today, and has more about the mayor elect. >> hope is alive and well in san francisco. >> an upbeat newcomer to city hall promising change in san francisco. hope powered by our love for this city that we call home. lurie, who spent 9 million of his own money to fund the campaign, says he does not plan on accepting a salary as mayor. hundreds gathering to celebrate their newly elected mayor as daniel lurie previewed his future plans. >> our mandate is to show how government must deliver on its promises. clean and safe streets for all. tackling our drug and behavioral health crisis. shaking up the corrupt and ineffective bureaucracy. building enough housing so our neighbors can afford to live here. supporting our small businesses and breathing life

back into downtown. >> lurie immediately meeting with business owners in chinatown with a packed schedule of hand-shaking and fanfare friday. how's the welcome committee been? >> i mean, there's a lot of friends, a lot of family here in chinatown. >> supporters optimistic about having a fresh face. >> we just love that he's an outsider and he's going to come in and he's going to break up the city family. he's going to break up all the problems that we've seen that are related to people knowing each other. he doesn't owe anybody anything and he's not going to be tainted by that. >> longtime friends confident lurie is fit to lead. >> daniel, who has led a life of service, who's led a sizable organization and had his heart, is, i think, a public servant and is also a problem solver. >> but he will face major challenges inheriting the city's $800 million budget deficit and constituents hungry for san francisco's big comeback. in san francisco, monica madden, abc

seven news. >> in the north bay, there's fear and concern among many in the immigrant community due to president elect donald trump's promise to conduct mass deportations of undocumented immigrants once he takes office and it's unclear what that could mean to california's wine industry, which could face a labor shortage today. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard spoke with immigration advocates about the future. >> our concern is that the community who need services will now be uh- will now fear seeking services, sonnino says. >> legal aid of sonoma county is bracing for new federal policies targeting the vulnerable clients they serve. president elect donald trump making this promise. >> on day one, i will launch the largest deportation program in american history to get the criminals out. >> legal advocates say they're preparing for a second trump term, which could bring a 30% cut to their funding right now. shoring up legal defenses for the immigrant community is top priority for us.

>> we want to make sure that the immigrant population, regardless of their status, feels that legal aid is here to serve them. >> a recent study by the american immigration council says the cost of mass deportation could cost $315 billion, with construction, hospitality and agriculture workers most impacted. it's estimated 14% of construction workers are undocumented. the biggest question how would deportations impact the north bay's billion dollar wine grape ag industry? could it mean a labor shortage? >> i think sonoma county and the north bay generally have come to grips with the fact that immigrants are the backbone of our economy, and they're essential to who we are, both economically and culturally. the sonoma county vintners and growers alliance says there's no worry yet, but there is obviously a lot of unknowns still about the possible trump immigration policy. >> although we are increasingly becoming mechanized in the wine grape industry, we definitely value and rely on a solid and skilled workforce in order to

grow and harvest our crops. advocates say many seasonal farm workers are in california legally on visas, but not all. >> and that's something that's really hard to prepare for, to know who's going to be targeted first. >> many advocates say they'll be watching to see what's next. >> there's a lot of waiting and seeing, but we will be ready to work in sonoma county. >> cornell, bernard. abc seven news. >> governor newsom is speaking with supporters following the election. >> well, i say we can't fear the future. we can't influence it. i said all the time, the future is not in front of us. it's inside of us. it's decisions, not conditions, that determine our fate in future. so the decisions we make today, tomorrow, over the course of the next few week, what we do to prepare for the next few years before january 20th so we can hit the ground running. >> he's calling to make california trump proof, as he put it, by building protections against harmful policies. newsom is set to hold a special session of the state legislature on december 2nd to prepare for any

legal action against the trump administration and earlier today, president elect donald trump wrote on truth social that newsom is trying to, quote, kill california. >> trump criticized newsom's policy decisions, adding that the cost of everything, particularly groceries, is out of control. >> coming up here, a $10 million payment for the oakland coliseum complex was due yesterday, but it still hasn't been paid. we'll tell you why. as abc

and they tell the abc7 news i-team that they're withholding that payment on purpose. the team formerly known as the oakland a's, has agreed to sell its 50% share of the complex to the african american sports and entertainment group, but alameda county has to approve that part of the deal. members from seg went to the board of supervisors yesterday, urging them to approve the assignment of the a's interest in the coliseum to a seg. ray bobbitt is co-founder of the investors group. >> we feel like this. the pieces of this transaction are all really coming together, and this is a very, very critical piece. so we're here really to thank the board for the steps that you've taken so far. but we're here to truly encourage you to allow for county council to have formal direction on completing this assignment. thank you.

>> after a closed session, the board assigned a second negotiator to help speed the process. asic hopes to wrap up the part of the purchase by the time of another board hearing set for next week. >> happening tonight. another major road closure to tell you about. beginning at 10:00, caltrans crews will close the southbound 101 connector at i-8, as well as the southbound 101 on ramp on ramp from 10th and bryant street. this is part of the continued repair work on emergency barriers on 101 and on i-80. drivers should expect delays, of course, and are urged to use alternate routes. the roads are scheduled to reopen monday at 9 a.m, coming up at least 132 structures destroyed. >> we're continuing to track the latest on the mountain fire burning in southern california. details

percent contained. cal fire says at least 130 structures have been destroyed, and today it was a heartbreaking scene as more residents in the camarillo area had the chance to get into the fire zone to see what's left of their homes. reporter sid garcia from our sister station in la spoke with some of them about the emotional return, the destruction caused by this massive fire is being assessed. >> the weather is cooperating. the winds here have died down. evacuation orders are still in effect for thousands of residents in this camarillo area. some venture back to see

what was left. >> everything is gone. everything i lost everything. >> those who still have a home told us they were feeling lucky. >> god was with us. our house was saved. you know, unfortunately, our neighbors houses weren't. and i feel terrible for them. we've been here for 20 years. i know all these people well. >> from the top of the street, we could see the roof of this house and it's just overwhelming. i cried like a baby and my wife and i hugged and blessed by our good luck. >> gas and power have been shut off to most of the fire area. however, one service that is resuming soon is mail. the u.s. postal service office in camarillo, the one nearest the burn area, is setting up these temporary boxes for the residents whose homes were destroyed in the mountain fire. >> those who have lost homes, we will be providing them with a

mailbox at the post office so they can come in and pick up keys from the post office to get their mail, said garcia. >> abc seven news, the first ski resort in the tahoe region, opened today. >> mount rose officials say recent storms dropped enough natural snow for the resort's snow making operation to kick in. the resort will operate two lifts and open multiple trails, with 1000 vertical feet of skiing. other resorts in the area plan to open before thanksgiving, and they include heavenly north star, northstar, california and palisades tahoe. >> that's fun. >> yeah. now they just want some new fresh snow. >> but in the meantime, we're going to get some fresh rain. >> that is true. let's check in with meteorologist sandhya patel. hey, sandhya. hi, there. >> yeah, and you know what? dan and kristen, we're also going to see some snow up in the sierra. so let's take a look at a live picture right now in the tahoe area. it is 40s for the temperatures at this hour. that's going to be changing

though as we head towards monday where they will be seeing some rain and snow. our live picture is beautiful views today we saw those temperatures in the 60s and 70s, but you're noticing a few more high clouds around. those clouds will continue to increase as we check out live doppler seven. there's a low in the gulf of alaska. it's going to send a couple systems our way. this first one is just going to be more clouds, maybe a little drizzle this weekend. the second storm that's going to come through here on monday will actually bring us the rain. so let's look at live doppler seven. seeing those passing clouds right now. temperatures are coming down in the 60s. still comfortable if you're stepping out. and as we check out that live view from. okay, one more time, if you are traveling out of. okay. it is aloha friday. travel forecast time tomorrow 67 and partly cloudy if you're heading to honolulu 84. 30% chance of some showers and kona is looking at the possibility of showers. kahului a little windy out there. your weekend weather. more clouds, a few sprinkles. monday, which is veteran's day.

rain, cooler and gusty. and then midweek we're talking about partly cloudy skies. drizzle chance near average temperatures. so we go hour by hour this evening. the cloud cover will continue to increase going into tomorrow. there may be a couple of sprinkles tomorrow night into sunday morning. some drizzle. i wouldn't be surprised if you saw a little bit of damp roadways along the coastline as the fog returns, and we see that increase in the cloud cover. here comes our light level one storm for monday a light to moderate rain. we're looking at slippery roads, breezy to gusty at times and as we check out those winds, they will start to pick up 11:00 in the morning on monday. not terribly strong, but you will notice up to 30 miles an hour in the early afternoon out of the south and we'll keep it on the gusty side going into tomorrow, monday afternoon. excuse me. speaking of monday, here's the rain. it moves in monday morning. it spreads monday evening and there will be that rain. snow mix in the sierra that continues well into monday night for the mountains.

in terms of the rainfall here, i think this is going to be a healthy dose, at least a quarter to a half an inch for most areas. but some of our wetter locations picking up three quarters to an inch of rain, 30 to 50 on your temperatures. fewer locations will be in the 30s because of the cloud cover, trapping that heat. in this morning we had a lot of 30s in our wind sheltered valleys. tomorrow afternoon, 60s and 70s there will be more cloud cover. and here's a look at the accuweather seven day forecast. while it's not going to be bright and sunny all weekend long, it's still going to be pleasant. a chance of some drizzle between saturday night and sunday and then a level one storm on veteran's day, bringing us the wet weather tuesday through friday. you will notice that cooler pattern with 50s and 60s, and there will be other systems coming through here. could see a little drizzle or a chance of some showers in the northern part of our viewing area around midweek. kristen. >> sounds like weather that gives you an excuse to have pumpkin spice lattes. why not? >> like we need much of an excuse exactly. all right, we're
