a 13 year old boy shares what he went through with his family during a boating accident on bodega bay. san francisco mayor london breed went all in on panda diplomacy. but is the new mayor daniel leary, on board with the panda plan? are we about to pay a lot more at the pump? the big decision tonight out of sacramento. >> always live. abc seven news starts right now. >> good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley. we'll begin with just a heartbreaking story. it's tough to hear a 13 year old boy went crabbing with his father and some other family over the weekend in bodega bay. the boat capsized, and the boy is the only one to survive. tonight, he shared what happened with abc seven news south bay reporter lauren martinez. >> he was a pretty funny guy and he was there for us and he would do anything for her, especially her family. >> julie, carmen, cousin jude for short, is the only survivor of a deadly boat trip he went on

with his father and other family members, surrounded by family in his san jose home. the 13 year old described what happened last weekend. >> it was very cold and windy while crabbing in bodega bay. >> their boat capsized, sending all six people overboard into the cold water wearing a life jacket, jude said he crawled into a cooler. his father was also hanging on until he let go so jude could reach the shore faster. >> it was a pretty terrifying to see my dad go too soon. >> it took hours before jude reached the beach. in the pitch black dark. >> so i prayed to jesus christ and all of my family members that i can make it out alive and get to see my family and everybody that i know. >> tired, jude said he slept on the shore and waited until daylight before walking to get help for days. rescue crews have searched for his father, praisesong, his uncle johnny.

johnny's two sons and a family friend. the body of one of johnny's sons has been found through this time of grief, and uncertainty. jude is remaining positive. >> it kind of set in and it was like a good dream because i actually wanted to see my family again. but it's a really good thing i'm back with my family because i'm happy to see my family, and every one of my family members are supporting me throughout this journey without my father. >> one of those family members is his auntie shanice. >> i focus on the kids to try to see what their needs are and how they're going to make it. >> the family created a gofundme. jude's father was their main provider. >> when was this? >> jude showed me photos of his family with a wall full of his father's fishing rods. jude plans to return to the water one day and continue doing something they loved together. >> at least get to see to live a longer life. >> in san jose, lauren martinez,

abc seven news jude what a remarkable young man. >> a link to the family's gofundme is on our website abc seven news.com. there will also be a vigil in bodega bay next weekend. let's move on now. days after election night, results in two closely watched recall votes are now final. first, pamela price is out as alameda county district attorney. 65% of voters approved the recall effort. critics said that price's progressive reform platform was simply too soft on criminals, and led to increasing crime and the mayor of oakland is out as well. 65% of voters in oakland say yes to a recall of mayor shengtao, the president of the oakland city council will step in as interim mayor until a special election can be held. that will likely happen in april. tonight, tao says she is committed to a smooth transition. she has been harshly criticized for several of oakland's issues, including the crime rate. she issued a

statement in response to the recall vote thanking oakland citizens and saying, quote, it was my goal to make oakland safer, cleaner and more vibrant. i am proud of what we accomplished together. we brought crime down dramatically across the board for the first time in over a decade, oakland went over a month without a single murder. our work literally saved lives. congresswoman barbara lee, tonight, reflecting on the accomplishments during her time representing california's 12th district, she sat down with her newly elected replacement, lateefah simon, to talk about that legacy and the future for the district. they spoke about fighting for the rights of women of color and various international aid, plus a gesture welcoming simon into the position. li passed her a literal baton just as ron dellums passed to li back when he retired from congress in 1998. alameda county officials are still way behind in counting election ballots, but say they

are making progress. only about half of the ballots cast in the county have been processed, so far. the county registrar of voters says there are still about 370,000 ballots left to be processed, and were given until the beginning of december to certify the election. >> we have no there's no risk that we're going to be having any issues with getting this election certified. i do recognize that people are anxious, especially with some of the high profile races that we have. >> county officials plan to work through the weekend and monday is veterans day. they'll work as well then, according to data from the secretary of state. of the ten most populous counties in california, alameda is by far the slowest this year in counting ballots. in san francisco, a political newcomer will soon be at the helm of city hall. nonprofit founder and levi strauss heir daniel lurie will be the city's first elected mayor in a century. with no governing experience. he

officially declared victory to supporters at a rally today and shared some of his priorities. >> government must deliver on its promises clean and safe streets for all. tackling our drug and behavioral health crisis. shaking up the corrupt and ineffective bureaucracy. building enough housing so our neighbors can afford to live here. supporting our small businesses and breathing life back into downtown. >> lurie says he plans to meet with every department head in the city and determine what leadership changes he thinks need to be made. well, so far, lurie has not said too much about the mayor breed's final efforts bringing back pandas to san francisco zoo, something she worked on the last few months. and tonight, abc seven news reporter tara campbell digs into what the new mayor means for the pending panda plans. >> i'm most excited about going to china and bringing back pandas. i'm like, fingers

crossed, i want to see a panda in person in china, too. >> that's mayor london breed months ago, making a push to bring a pair of pandas to san francisco from china. the potential tourist attraction, a major part of her push for reelection, and now that she's lost, are all hopes for pandas lost, too? or will mayor elect daniel lurie continue the push? >> you know, the pandas are kind of an interesting illustration of the challenge of being mayor of san francisco. on one hand, people really like them and they bring a lot of attention. on the other hand, people say they're frivolous and it's a waste of money. but, you know, san francisco is supposed to be attracting people. and this is one of the ways to attract it. >> the pandas coming with a multi-million dollar price tag. breed was trying to raise $25 million needed to build a new panda enclosure at the san francisco zoo. >> i'm pro panda loving the pandas, but with all of the dangerous things that are going on with the zoo, i think we should hold off on the pandas. >> the zoo. last month, facing a scathing report, the san

francisco animal control and welfare commission saying many of its enclosures are extremely outdated. >> i also think we have a lot of other problems to solve before bringing the pandas over. like every single thing that our mayor elect ran on, it's an opportunity to learn about pandas and children love to see live animals, so why not? >> hey, listen, anything to get more people to the city, right? if you see a panda, it's very cute. >> so i'm pretty sure it will attract a lot of people coming from other cities. as for the incoming mayor, he says, i don't know the status of all the issues that are going on at the zoo. >> if it's doable, great. >> telling us he plans on getting up to speed before taking office. >> i will talk with mayor breed and her team and see where we are with that. you know, anything that brings tourism to our great city we should be looking at. >> tara campbell, abc seven news. >> a beautiful fall night in the

bay area as we head into the weekend. however, there are some changes on the way and meteorologist sandhya patel is here to tell us when we might see some rain. >> sandhya on the holiday. dan, we are expecting rain but prior to that, i'm going to show you what you can expect a live view right now from our east bay hills camera. absolutely gorgeous. you can see across the bay there, but we do have some clouds that are rolling in higher clouds. that is as a weak system is approaching. then we have a stronger system that is coming in behind it. that is due in on monday. so let's time out what you can expect for this upcoming weekend. tomorrow night into early sunday morning, there may be a little bit of drizzle around, so don't be surprised if you see some damp roadways. but beyond sunday, we have a better opportunity for rain on veteran's day. as you can see, the rain chances going up on monday and chances will continue the middle to latter part of the workweek next week. dan, i'll be back with a full look at the forecast for your weekend and beyond coming up. all right. >> very good sandhya. thank you. the oakland unified school

district is considering a change that could affect thousands of students and families. the district wants to merge ten schools at five existing shared campus locations. a letter sent out today proposes mergers on the campuses of manzanita community school and manzanita seed elementary, korematsu discovery academy and esperanza elementary school. think college now and international community school. also, life academy and united for success academy and encompass academy, which shares a campus with acorn woodland elementary. this proposal will be voted on by the board at a meeting on december 11th. oakland unified is considering a school closure, as well as hiring freezes and layoffs, as the district deals with a looming $95 million budget deficit. governor newsom is extending the chp enforcement surge in oakland. it's been underway since february and was set to end this week, but will now continue until the end of

the year. newsom says it's necessary to maintain public safety following tuesday's election, but the plan is not without criticism. >> the chp has a terrible record in terms of being racially biased. people of color, voters of color are more likely to be stopped, and when they are stopped, they're more likely to be assaulted. >> i don't know if chp has to be the answer, but at a moment when oakland pd is performing so poorly, it leaves the governor with not that many choices. >> newsom says officers are making progress against crime in the east bay. the chp says officers have arrested nearly 1200 suspects since february. californians are going to be hit with an expected gas price increase of $0.65 per gallon, so brace yourself for that. the state's air resources board just voted in favor of a policy to reduce emissions and improve air quality. the idea is to raise the price to reduce demand for gas, to reduce the use of fossil fuels long term. more than 100

following a soccer game a late thursday night. authorities say they were ambushed by roving gangs of pro-palestinian protesters after a match between the dutch team ajax and israel's maccabi tel aviv. as many as 30 people were injured and five had to go to the hospital. the prime minister of the netherlands called the attacks anti-semitic, so far, more than 60 people have

been arrested. there are reports of a clash earlier on wednesday where the israeli fans ripped down and burned a palestinian flag. and we're hearing reactions. new reaction tonight to san francisco unified students receiving racist text messages. the students are among the victims in more than a dozen states who were targeted. the messages come from unknown numbers, with the message they've been selected to pick cotton at the nearest plantation. just terrible thing, obviously. in a statement. sf usd says hate will not be tolerated and it's providing wellness support to any student on the receiving end of these texts. the district says it will cooperate with any law enforcement investigation into these messages. >> we're going to turn within and make sure that we take care of our children and that we keep our communities safe from uncivilized behavior. >> reporter this afternoon, san

francisco mayor elect daniel lurie put out a statement on x, saying he's spoken with reverend brown and that he stands with community leaders in condemning these messages. the naacp is also holding a town hall on this issue sunday. developing news in southern california, where firefighters are making progress tonight on the devastating wildfire in ventura county. the mountain fire, as it's called, has burned more than 20,000 acres and containment is now up to 14%. some evacuees were allowed back in and found whether their home had even survived the flames. tim pulliam with our sister station in los angeles has more. >> that's one of the garage stores. >> the aftermath from the mountain fire in camarillo is heartbreaking. everything is gone. >> everything i lost everything. >> other evacuees returning, finding their homes intact. >> just overwhelming. i cried like a baby. and my wife and i hugged and blessed by our good luck. >> god was with us. our house is saved. you know, unfortunately,

drizzle for the pacific northwest. they're going to be getting an atmospheric river. so taking a look at our local radar here, we do have some high clouds that are passing through the bay area right now. they're coming in a little late. so the temperatures have been falling. right now. you're in the 40s and the 50s. the clouds will thicken up overnight tonight. a beautiful view from our sutro tower looking at san francisco. the weekend weather. more clouds. a few sprinkles. monday, veteran's day is going to be wet and breezy and cooler. and then midweek we do have a drizzle chance or a shower chance with near average temperatures. so on our storm impact scale for monday, level one system light to moderate rain. we're talking about slippery roads, breezy to gusty at times. so if you do have plans for the holiday, keep that in mind as we go. hour by hour, monday morning winds start to pick up out of the south. you will notice gusting a little bit later in the afternoon, 30 miles an hour for some areas and that continues into 3 p.m. before the winds start to turn around and back off. so here's monday morning, 10:00. you have the

rain moving into the bay area heading into the evening hours. it's a wet one. the sierra is seeing a mix of rain and snow, and this really continues for the mountains until late monday night before another system rolls in. midweek rainfall through monday is going to range anywhere from about a quarter to a half an inch. some of our wetter spots, about three quarters of an inch to an inch. not out of the question. it is going to turn to snow in the mountains. and i'm taking you through monday through friday of next week. so a week from today looking at 11in at donner, 13in at kirkwood. no wonder why some of those resorts are opening as we take a look at your morning temperatures. 30s, 40s. still chilly enough even with the cloud cover that you're going to want to bundle up if you have saturday morning plans in the afternoon, it's going to be a mix of sun and clouds and even some fog rolling back into the picture. certainly is going to be cooler than today. so low 60s to low 70s as we check out the accuweather seven day forecast. increasing clouds for your saturday late saturday evening
