>> good evening. thank you for joininw development in the murder case dividing the greater boston community. karen rhee, the girlfriend of local police officer john o'keefe, accused of killing him after a night of drinking. her trial ended in a hung jury, but her lawyers argue those jurors weren't deadlocked about everything. here's abc's matt gutman. reporter. >> it's the latest twist in the murder mystery saga that captivated the country for over a year. karen read back in court four months after her trial ended with a hung jury. she's accused of hitting her boyfriend, boston police officer john o'keefe, with her suv and leaving him to die in the snow.

>> i suggest we've more than met the burden of production of proof. >> this week, her defense team arguing in front of the massachusetts supreme court that two of the three charges he's facing be dropped due to double jeopardy. also arguing that the court should allow jurors to be questioned about the verdict. >> we now know, based on the representations of four jurors indirectly, a fifth that the prior jury reached a unanimous decision to acquit misread of two of the three charges. >> the defense is arguing that after that verdict was rendered multiple to the tune of five, jurors supposedly reached out to the defense in one way, shape or form, saying that was not our verdict. we were conclusive as to two of the three charges. >> but prosecutors arguing there was no indication during the trial that the jurors had come to any agreement. >> they've returned three times, indicating that they are deadlocked. they are at an impasse and they do not want to continue to deliberate.

>> prosecutors also saying that the judge used her discretion to not further question the jury about each individual count. three karen read the high profile murder case consuming and dividing the community. justice for jj captivating true crime fans and sending many on social media into a frenzy. >> is she being framed? an elaborate cover up involving corrupt cops? or did she back up into her boyfriend and leave him for dead? >> three gary at times, karen reed's supporters swarming the courthouse when it comes to the case of karen reed, it has everything you want of a true crime story. >> it's got love and murder. it's got a potential cover up. it's got forensic scientists arguing things that could or could not happen, and it leaves everyone in two separate equal camps of karen reed's innocent. or karen reed is guilty. >> it all started on a friday night in january 2022. reed and o'keefe drinking with their friends at a local bar. later that night, reed says that she

last saw john after dropping him off at an after party at a fellow boston police officer's home. she says she awoke in the middle of the night and he wasn't home. >> i called a few of his buddies, their wives. >> no one had seen him, so she goes to look for him in the car. >> now i have an immense sense of dread, like a fright in me that i have not experienced before. >> do you expect to see him like lying on the street drunk or passed out? >> i was worried he might have gotten hit by a plow. >> reed meets up with some of john's friends and they all return to the house where the after party was, and then she spots him in the snow. >> his eyes were shut and he had spots of blood in different areas on his face, and he was still not stiff, but but still. >> john o'keefe is soon declared dead, but the investigation is about to explode. investigators finding pieces of a tail light they say are from reed's car at

the crime scene, alleging they broke off after she hit him with the car. >> i was talking to my best friend on the phone and i said, there's a lot of cops circling. and i said, i think i'm going to get arrested. >> reed was later charged with second degree murder, manslaughter and leaving the scene and pleaded not guilty. would you say that you were angry with john that night? >> yes. >> could you have been angry enough and slightly drunk because he had annoyed you, that in the fit of rage you just backed up and never tried to tap him? >> i would never not to try to kill him, but try to tap him with my 6,000 pound full size suv to hit john's body with my car. no. >> abc news capturing behind the scenes footage as reed prepared for her trial. >> hiding out like this. you just watch the world pass you by and you're. you're going through the motions. pun intended. and but you know, it could all end. i could be convicted. >> in the months leading up to

the trial, reed's defense team arguing in hearings and filings a stunning new theory that the injuries on o'keefe's body were not consistent with him being hit by a car. they claimed she was framed. >> there are people in that house that are actually responsible for his death and who murdered him, and there are others in the house who are covering up that murder. >> the prosecution insisting that no one at the party had anything to do with o'keefe's death. and they deny that reed was being framed. the homeowner testified in the trial, contradicting reed's account, and at no point in time over the course of that evening or the early morning there. >> did john o'keefe or karen reed physically come into your house? >> john o'keefe and karen reed never entered my house. >> the defense questioning the lead investigator, state trooper michael proctor, on the stand in an attempt to discredit the investigation, asking him to read aloud derogatory texts he sent about reed. >> if you could just read the responses from yourself, sir. >> okay. these came from me. she's a whack job. yes, she's a

>> how do you find in this world another pair of twins that you're both interested in? >> right, exactly. because a lot of things have to align, right? stars had to align and they did. >> the stars aligning at the twins day festival in 2017. the event claims to be the largest annual gathering of twins and multiples in the world. >> it's really amazing. so it's already this sort of magical place. and then there's like this nighttime party for adult twins, and they came over and we had already seen them earlier in the festival and didn't get to talk with them. so when they approached us, it was like like, yes, they were so handsome. so we wanted to meet them. >> when you were packing up your stuff to go to it, were you prepared to meet your wives? >> i guess a little bit. it's not that we went there like on the prowl. it wasn't quite like that, but it was back there that, you know, maybe that could happen. >> jeremy and i really were attracted to each other and started gravitating towards each other. and brittany and josh

started, so it was like, perfectly kind of paired off. >> that's a common question. how did you guys decide who goes with who? it was just from the very beginning. >> six months later, the brothers popping the question together with matching rings. of course, i remember this february 2nd, 0202 so it was, you know, it was this amazing double proposal. >> and it was it was so beautiful. we even said yes at the same moment. >> one year later, the couples returned to twinsburg, getting hitched in a joint ceremony. what do you think is the most common misconception about your life? >> i think there are people who wonder if it's a situation, and that'scase. we sd all of that, but we're not sharing spouses. no, each twin gets their own partner. >> you're always going to get some ugly comments and things like that. of course, i think you have to kind of keep a sense of humor about it, you know, and also understand that, you know, these people don't know us at

all. they're looking at a situation and they're questioning the situation. >> and as a twin myself also working alongside my fraternal twin brother, i had to ask, do you get each other confused at any point? >> so we have had our moments. we can usually tell them apart and they all look alike, you know, so from the from the side, from the back, you know, maybe you got to be a little extra careful because it's a double double chance of the confusion happening. right. and no one can be annoyed. it's only a matter of time before that's going to happen to them. >> mixing us up, getting things mixed up. not the biggest surprise of all. each couple's sons also biologically considered genetic siblings technically cousins, but with dna close enough to be brothers. your kids are, by definition, biologically siblings. >> exactly, because you both have the same dna and your husbands have the same dna. exactly. and so they because they are genetic brothers and they were born less than 9 or 10

months of each other. they're genetic brothers the same age. and that is quaternary twins. >> do you have them see each other as brothers? >> we do, we do. they'll say, my brother, not my cousin. >> the sisters twinning even in pregnancy, we really wanted to have overlapping pregnancies. >> it didn't have to be like we were giving birth on the same day, but we really wanted to be pregnant together. briana and i, we each went through miscarriages, and so the pressure when it's the situation of identical twins married to identical twins, you know, part of the i don't know, the intrigue and fun of it is staying on the same page of life. >> it's a big relief when they got to overlap their pregnancies like that and experience that together. we wanted that for them. >> their boys, jackson and jett, now say they have two moms and two dads. >> the moment she of course, that i became a mom, she became a mom. yes, jeremy and i, when it happened, it was like we looked at each other and it was. yes. we also felt like, oh my

gosh, you know, our parents. >> so now as as twin moms raising your sons, is it almost as if you each have two sons? >> yes. i'll usually say something like, so we have two three year olds at our house. so we don't have to go into the whole thing. but we definitely feel like we beat the system. we beat the system. we got two. we only had to, you know, carry one child each, but we each have two. yes, we definitely all four raise both. >> those are my mom and dad on the other task. >> no, that has to be your mommy and daddy and then your mommy and daddy are over here. no, that's just mom and dad that's stolen. >> mommy. >> oh. together since birth and planning to share their whole lives side by side. each set of twins still doing most things alike, nearly always eating, exercising and dressing. the same haircuts at the same time. >> yes, yes. >> the idea is that you do similar things in order to make sure that you have similar outcomes. is that true in terms of lifespan and longevity? >> yes, definitely. so we would
