debated, it looks like they've made their decision as to whether it should close for good. good evening and thanks for joining us. i'm dion lim. it looks like a two mile stretch of san francisco's great highway will be closing. the latest numbers show measure k passing getting 54% of the vote. closing off the road to cars will create a new oceanfront park. but not everybody is happy. abc seven news reporter suzanne fawn with what community members are saying. as the sun sets at ocean beach, people enjoy another quiet weekend on the great highway without vehicle traffic. measure k, if it officially passes, will make that a reality. seven days a week, not just on weekends and that's exactly what chase davenport is hoping for. >> i just think that open spaces are important for the city. >> davenport is a coastal scientist who's thinking about the future of ocean beach and what's happening there. >> i think that we're going to have to experience the city in ways other than being in cars. a lot more. as the world changes.

>> the great highway was shut down to vehicles temporarily during the pandemic. the city then closed it on weekends and holidays, but not everyone agrees with measure k and a complete shutdown. >> it's very disappointing right now for us. that did not want the great highway to be permanently closed to cars. >> richie greenberg lives in the richmond district. he says closing the great highway permanently will create some big headaches, diverting traffic through normally quiet neighborhood streets. >> these streets here were not made for the kind of 20,000 cars per day volume that is here that uses the great highway. >> greenberg believes that will also impact businesses in the richmond district. >> people will potentially not want to come here because of congestion, because of the inconvenience, because of potential accidents, because of potential overflow. >> this movement has been led by people who live in the sunset for years. >> lucas lux with friends of the great highway park, says the pros of closing part of the road permanently to cars outweigh the

cons. he says it's all about giving the community a safe space and a reason to come out. >> after proposition k wins, we are going to work together to make our streets safe for everyone in the family and have a world class park in our backyard. and so i think there's a way for us to have a real win win in the neighborhood. >> but opponents say the local residents directly impacted by the closure and increased traffic didn't ask for this measure. >> this should not have been a ballot measure in the first place. >> a community split over what to do with the great highway in san francisco, suzanne phan abc7 news. a setback for the counting of ballots in santa clara today after a bomb scare at the registrar's office. investigators say the threat came in via email at about 830 this morning, and that led authorities to evacuate four buildings on the campus. the bomb squad was called out to sweep those buildings, and the count was suspended. no bomb was found and no injuries were reported. >> the sheriff's office and also

our county security, they are working together to, like, sweep the offices. i saw a few puppies over here sniffing and working. >> santa clara county still has to process about 200,000 ballots from tuesday's election. officials tell us they lost about five hours of work today, but will work weekends and overtime to finish the job of counting. they say the incident won't impact their ability to certify the election. oakland has recalled mayor shang tao. yes, it is outpacing no by a nearly 2 to 1 margin. and once that vote is certified, tao is out and the city council president takes over as mayor. a special election will then be held 120 days following certification. alameda county district attorney pamela price is also being recalled. price is the county's first district attorney to be recalled, and she faces criticism for being too lenient on crime. the margin is

similar to the oakland mayor. recall nearly 2 to 1 in favor. so who may be the next alameda county da? abc seven news reporter anser hassan takes a look. recall price. >> recall price from the get go. >> alameda county district attorney pamela price face efforts to recall her as of friday. the votes are in and price is out. >> we've never said lock them up and throw away the key. we've always said accountability is the most important thing. >> oakland resident brenda grisham is with the group safe, which led the recall effort. they accused da price of being soft on crime and not doing enough for victims. once the vote is officially certified, price will step down. the alameda county board of supervisors will appoint an interim da who will serve until the next general election in 2026, when the recall has been successful. >> we've seen political opponents that are visible or run before fill that void, professor david mcewen says the board will likely seek a candidate with a combination of prosecutorial management and

victims rights experience, and someone who was an ada or in a management level and not quite an executive level, but had managed a unit like a victim's crime unit. once the application process begins, the board will narrow it down to 3 to 5 candidates and then conduct public interviews. >> those could happen as early as january. >> many of the programs at da price started will prove effective over the longer term, and i hope that the supervisors will be looking for somebody that's thinking incarceration can't solve every problem, can't solve problems of poverty, can't solve problems of mental illness. >> christine soto deberry is the executive director of the prosecutor's alliance. it's a statewide organization focused on improving the criminal juste system. she was against the recall of da price. she says the board will also have to balance the pursuit of justice against what she calls the very real problems in the justice system. >> da price uncovered a very significant problem around the death penalty, where black and jewish and lgbtq citizens were being excused

francisco drivers will face warnings for parking violations starting on monday. it's all a change te state's day lighting law, which now prohibits parking within 20ft of any crosswalk. the goal is to improve pedestrian safety at intersections statewide. that law took effect in january, but drivers in san francisco will start receiving warnings for violations on monday. fines will start at $40 once the law is fully enforced. next year. marin county supervisors are backing a plan to remove the bike lane on the richmond-san rafael bridge on a trial basis. the multi-use lane on the westbound shoulder would be opened to motor vehicles monday through thursday mornings. the supervisors voted unanimously to ask the san francisco bay conservation and development commission to evaluate the effects of such a change. happening now in san francisco, caltrans is continuing repairing emergency barriers on 101 and 80. the southbound 101 connector at i-80 is closed,

as well as the southbound 101 on ramp from 10th and bryant. those roads will reopen monday by 9 a.m. firefighters in southern california are working hard to battle the ventura county wildfire. they're making progress as intense winds are starting to calm this weekend. so far, more than 130 structures, mostly homes, have been destroyed. some people are allowed to return home to sort through burnt remains. one couple said they were away when their home caught fire. >> we were in minnesota and our friends were texting us, asking us if we were okay, and i think they didn't want to tell us, but they knew that our house was ont fire. >> and then somebody sent us a video of a tv newscast, and we actually saw our house in flame. >> so heartbreaking. the mountain fire has burned through more than 20,000 acres already and is 21% contained. still ahead tonight when you turn 100,

san francisco and onto the bay. 45 right now at santa rosa. low to mid 40s at petaluma and napa. fairfield upper 40s at concord and livermore, and another clear view from emeryville. looking at the bay bridge. these are our forecast headlines tomorrow. a little bit of morning drizzle, then sunnier in the afternoon before that front sweeps in tomorrow night. monday, veteran's day. rainy, breezy and cooler with that cold front sweeping through and from midweek to late week, we expect increasing chances of rain. it will be an unsettled week of weather, clouds and sun and drizzle and rain. so this is a look at our storm impact exclusive abc seven storm impact scale. the approaching storm is a level one storm for monday. a storm of light intensity bringing light to moderate rainfall, slippery roadways and breezy to gusty conditions at times. we expect by 11:00 monday night, rainfall totals to be generally between about five hundredths of an inch and just over a 10th of an inch. but up in the north bay it will be wetter, about a third of an inch in santa rosa and nearly three quarters up in ukiah. so on

out to world leaders and is set to meet with president joe biden at the white house this coming wednesday. meanwhile, democrats are picking up the pieces and pointing fingers following tuesday's devastating loss. here's abc's christiane cordero. >> president elect donald trump will return to the white house for the first time since he left office nearly four years ago. president biden extending the invitation for the two men to meet in the oval office on wednesday. elon musk as the transition to a second trump presidency continues to move forward, growing questions about what role elon musk could have in the trump administration, sources tell abc news. musk has been on calls the president elect hs had with foreign leaders from mar a lago, including ukrainian president zelensky and turkish president erdogan. at one point, musk, speaking to zelensky himself, who thanked the tech billionaire for his starlink system, which ukraine has relied on for communications during its war with russia. we have a new star. >> a star is born.

tech. abc seven news south bay reporter dustin dorsey explains how things could change come january if the bay area was its own country. >> it would be the 17th largest in the world, and as the home of talent, innovation and technology, silicon valley would be the driving economic force. experts are hopeful that its role could become even greater with the trump presidency. jim wunderman is the president and ceo of the bay area council. >> i think a lot of folks in silicon valley are really hopeful that this will be a new day for them. and, you know, we need to help technology all we can. >> kris farmer is the ceo of signalfire, a venture capital and technology firm based in san francisco. he says right now, antitrust laws, higher taxes and overregulation are stifling innovation, especially in the still growing field of ai. last year, president joe biden signed an executive order that placed guardrails around ai development while not providing details trump has promised to dismantle that framework on day one. and farmer believes the trump

administration could help clear regulatory hurdles, especially for startups, with clarification of regulation and what can and can't be done with ai, with open source models, all those types of things that helps the whole ecosystem know where it's okay to play ball and where it's not. lower regulatory burdens for companies could also allow for more of them to go public easier. unlocking a financial benefit. >> it allows companies to get access to the public markets from a capital standpoint to fuel this growth, but it also allows the public to participate in a way that i think is critically important. >> wunderman says growth in a lot of national investments, like the chips act, has slowed in california. it's harder to build and expand, so companies leave. both wunderman and farmer hope for stronger ties with a trump white house. >> i think we have to figure out ways to work with this administration best we can, and it won't always be, you know, maybe what we would hope it to be. but in a lot of ways, it

could turn out to be very positive. >> a benefit for silicon valley and the country in the south bay. dustin dorsey, abc seven news. >> fire investigators say unusually dry conditions and high winds contributed to a wildfire that erupted in brooklyn's prospect prospect park on friday evening. the fire burned about two acres in a remote part of the park. the cause is still unknown, though this has been an historically dry time for new york city. firefighters say more than 100 brush fires have happened this month alone. the city had been under a red flag warning, which was lifted earlier tonight. another sighting of princess kate of the royal family attending a festival of remembrance. kate middleton, also known as catherine, princess of wales, is making a return to public duties. it all comes two months after announcing she is cancer free. she arrived at the event wearing a black dress with a red poppy, which is a symbol of respect to those who died in conflict. middleton is expected to attend

tomorrow's main remembrance day ceremony at buckingham palace. one of the dozens of monkeys that escaped a lab in south carolina is back in the care of its handlers, and several others may be headed back. there soon. the recaptured monkey was caught in a trap overnight, and officials said she was well and enjoying a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. 43 monkeys escaped the lab earlier this week when a lab employee didn't fully shut an enclosure. the police say there is almost no danger to the public, but still they are warning the locals not to approach those animals making auction history. a piece of eye artwork sold for over $1 million. take a look. an artist robot named ai da created a painting of alan turing called ai god. now, turing pioneered a lot of computer science and is sometimes considered the father of artificial intelligence. ai da, the robot is humanoid and is

this 74 foot norway spruce was hauled in and hoisted up by a crane overnight. decorating is underway now, and this giant will require five miles worth of lights. that is, if you're counting 50,000 light bulbs on top. a star crown with 3 million swarovski crystals on it. the big lighting ceremony is set for december fourth. over in the south bay, an unhoused man says he transformed an eyesore near a freeway, only to have all of his improvements, including a of his nativity scene swept away by caltrans. now that man and his son say they are left with next to nothing. abc seven news south bay reporter zach fuentes has their story. >> this was the nativity scene miguel maruyama set up for the holidays. and this is what happened to it friday morning.

maruyama said he's lived next to this freeway with his 19 year old special needs son. after losing his job and being evicted for two two months already. maruyama said the area in san jose, near seventh and virginia streets was filled with trash when he first got there, so he worked to beautify it. >> me and my son, we cleaned the whole area like we planted a total of 130 like bushes, trees, palm trees, like flowers. >> along with the plants, he also brought in several birds and in october set up this ofrenda for dia de los muertos. it was around then that he first got notice that caltrans planned to sweep the area. the news got a lot of attention, and caltrans didn't end up sweeping it when it said it would. so maruyama put up a nativity scene. this time, though, caltrans followed up on its notice. >> i didn't believe that they were going to actually, you know, do the way they did it. >> in a statement sent to us, caltrans said that the sweep was originally planned prior to halloween, but postponed it until friday. it said notice was given to local partners for outreach. advocates say they've

worked to get maruyama services, but the process has been slow. >> here's a family that's been out here for less than 90 days. they have special needs and we're saying, why can't you house them rapidly rather than leave them outside with special needs that prevent them from going into a large shelter environment? you know, there should be exceptions and this would be an exception. and so right now, the system failed this family. >> in its statement, caltrans said maruyama's belongings are being held for 60 days, and that contact info on how to get it back was provided. maruyama says he's not even sure if his belongings are intact after the way they were handled friday morning. >> i can see with my own eyes like how they started destroying everything, like they took everything that i have. >> maruyama said he's not sure what's next for him and his son. a gofundme account has been set up and he's working on selling the plants that caltrans left behind in san jose. zach fuentes, abc seven news. >> ofrendas nativity scenes. the weather does not seem very holiday like. >> no, not right now. and we're

a leaf because they got their muscle back. christian mccaffrey is officially a go for sunday's game against the buccaneers. this will be mccaffrey's first game this season after missing the first eight dealing with achilles tendinitis. we don't know what his workload is going to look like. before the injury, the niners liked mccaffrey to have about 25 touches a game that might be a lot for game one, but no doubt the 40 niners are excited to get their
