map right now not seeing really any red. just slight slowdown from tracy to livermore. but usually the backup is definitely bigger at this time of the morning. so you can see our overall map again, not much to report, but we'll keep you updated throughout the morning. reggie. >> gloria. thank you. as drew was just talking about. rain has returned to the bay area. that is good news for firefighters who were hoping for a break from the wildfires. abc seven news reporter lena howland joins us live in downtown pleasanton with a look at the impact. lena. >> hey, reggie. good morning to you. here in pleasanton, no signs of any rain. just yet. and while it may cause some slickand conditions on the roads a little bit later today, firefighters tell us this has been long overdue in the north bay. local firefighters are happy to see the added moisture as they turn the corner on fire season. we checked in with sonoma county fire district battalion chief mike stornetta. he says. there's still plenty of dry grass and brush out there to burn, but november rain could help pause and reduce the wildfire risk. after a busy fire season, and he

gives you access to the same live doppler seven tool as our weather team uses. download the app and make sure to turn on the notifications. >> new developments this week. two bay area school districts are considering school closures, and gloria is tracking the latest at the live desk. gloria. >> good morning. this will be a pivotal week as school boards in oakland and in san jose meet to discuss this controversial closure plans. the proposed changes could impact thousands of students and their families in oakland. the district wants to merge ten schools at five existing campuses, and you could see them listed right there on your screen. oakland unified is facing a looming $95 million budget deficit. the district is also considering hiring freezes and layoffs. the board meets this week to discuss the proposal. in san jose, berryessa union school district officials will meet this week to talk about a plan to close five elementary schools and three middle schools, and they are blaming declining enrollment. parents in both communities have expressed opposition to the proposals.

both districts have about a month to finalize their plans, and berryessa union will each vote on closure proposals in december. reggie aqui. >> thanks, gloria. in the north bay, another school district could vote to make students lock up their cell phones during class. the tamalpais union high school district is considering buying pouches for students to store their phones during the day. some campuses in the east bay are already using them. 4600 students across five north bay high schools would be required to magnetically lock their phones throughout the school day. a law signed by governor gavin newsom this year requires all school districts to eventually limit student cell phone use. >> now to the rising concern over racist text messages sent to black children and adults in san francisco and really across the country. the anonymous texts invoke slavery. addressing people by name. abc seven news reporter tara campbell takes us to a town hall where families were furious. >> sunday, san francisco's naacp holding a town hall at third baptist church condemning racist

text messages sent to students in the days following the election. >> let's do this. i'm ready. as a grandmother, a mother. we can't let them do this to our children. >> officials in more than a dozen states saying residents, including children, received text messages from unknown numbers saying they've been selected to pick cotton, including some sfusd students. >> we have to look at how to establish policy to deal with this so that people know if they do this, there is a consequence. >> in durham, north carolina, a mother sharing the message her teenage son received a day after the election. it said good evening. >> his first and last name. you and your family have been selected to stay at the stagville plantation on december the 8th. >> a similar message for this student in virginia. >> first text i saw was somebody texted me greeting me. first of all, greetings. and we will be there to pick you up for a cotton field.

>> federal investigators racing to find the source of the messages, saying they believe some of the texts can be traced back to an anonymous web address in poland. but the original source is still unknown. that's according to the louisiana attorney general, who says her cyber team discovered the connection. >> we have no way of knowing where the individual is, who's actually sending the emails, but we will continue to investigate it. >> meanwhile, back in san francisco, reverend amos brown is calling on the community to show up in support of the students at this tuesday's school board meeting. >> senior pastor, people like us need to speak up and speak out. >> tara campbell, abc seven news. >> a big shakeup on the san francisco board of supervisors supervisor dean preston is conceding to challenger bilal mahmoud in the race to represent district five. preston is the only democratic socialist on san francisco's board of supervisors. he posted his concession on instagram last night. mahmoud has 52.7% of the

vote. right now, mahmoud is more moderate now, likely representing one of the city's most progressive districts. that includes the tenderloin, haight-ashbury and the western addition. he spoke with our partner, the san francisco standard, saying his victory shows that voters want, quote, a progressive who's going to get results. >> today, president biden and vice president harris will make their first appearance together publicly since the election. the two leaders will attend a veterans day ceremony at arlington national cemetery. president elect donald trump's transition team is hard at work preparing to take power in just over two months. trump's team has confirmed he will be selecting people to serve in his administration in the coming days. over the weekend, trump made it clear that some former members of his administration will not be returning. this includes nikki haley, who served as ambassador to the united nations and former secretary of state mike pompeo. former presidential candidate and trump ally vivek ramaswamy says he believes the president elect

steadiest rain is still to our north. eureka is where the front is right now, but that front is on its way to the bay area and it will cross through here. close to lunchtime. some light showers ahead of the main front. we'll take you into the east bay right now down to street level on live doppler seven through hercules, richmond, berkeley. certainly 80 is going to be wet out there this morning in the east bay. 580 even highway four as well. orinda seeing some light rain. a similar story as we move towards walnut creek. so we will find some light showers early on, picking up in intensity a little bit later on this morning. so looking at the rainfall forecast throughout the day, you can really see we're focusing on this period between about 9 a.m. and noon. and that is when most of us will see the steadiest rain moving through our neighborhoods. after about noon, the rain chances drop off dramatically. you can see a big drop in our chance of any rain later on. this afternoon. we'll see a lot of sunshine as that front clears out the cloud cover later on today. so looking at rainfall estimates, we do anticipate as this map tries to update, probably a quarter of an inch, maybe a half of an

bankruptcy proceedings last year, overwhelmed by lawsuits over sexual abuse. advocates for those survivors tell abc seven news reporter j.r. stone, the diocese is offering far less than others in california. >> it's a definite message. the message is you are notsage. the important. the message is we don't care. >> that outrage comes from attorney rick simmons and is directed at the diocese of oakland. simmons represents numerous church sex assault survivors. friday, the diocese filed a plan of reorganization with the bankruptcy court. in a press release, the diocese says it will create a trust for sexual abuse survivors worth between 160 and 198 million to pay out 345 claims. but court documents show the initial installment is only 65 million. >> first of all, it's not 100 and some odd million dollars in cash. it's $60 million in cash and $10 million a year for four years. they keep that money

investing it, making money off of it all that time. while inflation eats away at the value to survivors, it is again, just plain insulting. it is nowhere near what los angeles did. >> simmons is referring to the $880 million that the archdiocese of los angeles settled on recently in their sex abuse cases. the difference there, though, the archdiocese of los angeles never filed for bankruptcy. dan mcnevin is a volunteer with snap, which stands for survivors network. of those abused by priests. his thoughts about the proposed monetary figures echo those of simmons. >> i think it's pretty pathetic. it's pretty low. this is a really, really wealthy diocese, and there's a lot of victims. i can't imagine creditors council is going to accept such a low number. it just calculates to almost nothing per victim. and they have 82 parishes. we think

they have 3 to $4 billion in real estate. the diocese of oakland says we believe the plan compensates survivors in a fair and equitable way, and allows the diocese of oakland to set a path forward to continue to spread the gospel, serving the faithful and the poor. >> the proposal, though, is far from a done deal, and mediation here will continue. j.r. stone abc seven news. >> now to a crackdown on large scale illegal pot gron northern california. fairfield police seized more than 8000 cannabis plants while shutting down eight illegal grow houses over the last few months. police say the homes also containedlice hazardous chemicals and were at risk of electrical overload fires. officers served warrants at two locations. this weekend and handed out nearly $1 million in citations. this is similar to a story we brought you this past august. million dollar homes in antioch turned into illegal pot

farms. back then, police raided 60 homes and confiscated more than $1 million worth of illegal weed. at the time, the department of cannabis control suspected there were still more than 100 grow houses operating. investigators say the homes at the centers of both cases were owned by chinese nationals. >> amazon's robotaxi company, zoox, says its self-driving vehicles are hitting the streets of san francisco. the eye catching futuristic cars are shuttling employees around soma. they're also running in foster city and the las vegas strip. zoox cto says consumers interested in hitching a ride will have to wait until 2026. again, right now, it's just employees. the company will begin really cranking out production of the custom built self-driving vehicles in 2026. they are a sight to behold. there's an undergraduate degree program in psychedelic studies that is launching next fall. it's run by the california institute of integral studies, a small private school in san francisco. the program will

teach students how psychedelics can treat ptsd, depression, alcoholism, and other conditions. about ten years ago, the institute launched a certificate program to train health care workers in psychedelic assisted treatments. >> a popular filipino condiment has been missing from store shelves because of an import ban by the fda. banana sauce, also known as banana ketchup, has been a beloved staple in filipino cuisine since the 1940s, but last month, the fda issued an alert for certain food additives. a number of popular banana ketchup brands contain potassium iodate, and shipments from the philippines screeched to a halt. several bay area stores we called were sold out, but at pacific supermarket in south city, we found some bottles still on the shelves. there was a four per person limit. the shortage hit some customers hard. >> i'm kind of sad because that's one of my daughter's favorite sauce, and it's been years that we're using it.

anywhere from 2 to 8in of snow as this front moves through here, so just be aware of that. if you may be traveling up to the sierra today. storm impact scale, it's a level one for light to moderate rain, some slick roadways, and at times as the front moves through it is breezy to gusty so let's time out this front for you. show you what's in store on your holiday today. here's 730. we are finding the front pretty much in the north bay. that's where we see the steadier showers first thing, by about 930 that front's on top of the east bay oakland over the city, moving through the peninsula. you see this pop of red here? that's just a brief line of some steadier showers moving through. that line is in the south bay closer to 11 a.m, and then we're pretty much wrapping up the storm in the early afternoon. by 1 p.m, sunshine is breaking out and we're drying out our skies. so looking at the forecast today, we will find kind ofa wet start out there. then the afternoon is actually sunny and dry, so inland we'll have temperatures in the 60s around the bay shoreline wet through about noon today and then sunshine coming out this afternoon. it's a similar story

down and be sure to give yourself some extra travel time. live in pleasanton. lena howland abc seven news lena. >> thank you. developing news extreme weather conditions on both coasts are fueling wildfires. thousands of firefighters are battling the mountain fire in southern california, and multiple fires are happening on the east coast. gloria is tracking the dangerous conditions at the live desk. gloria. >> reggie, there's a large firefighting effort happening across the country in new york and in new jersey. you could see some video of that right here. while it did rain overnight, extreme drought conditions e fueled multiple wildfires in recent weeks. over the weekend, a falling tree killed a volunteer force ranger in new york. he was fighting. what's being called the jennings creek fire. so far, it's burned more than 2500 acres and is 10% contained. in southern california, nearly 3000 firefighters are battling the mountain fire in ventura county. that fire has destroyed nearly 170 structures, most of them homes. >> we lost our house in the

administration is starting to take shape. president elect trump announced who he'll tap to lead border security, as he also weighs in on the new republican controlled senate. abc news reporter christiane cordero has the latest on the trump transition from washington. >> this morning, former immigration and customs enforcement director tom homan, who carried out one of the most controversial border policies during donald trump's first term, is set to return to the white house. the president elect announced. homan will serve as border czar tapped to fulfill trump's campaign promise of the largest mass deportation in american history. homan recently spoke with 60 minutes. >> i hear a lot of people say, you know, the talk of a mass deportation is racist. it's threatening to the immigrant community. it's not threatening to the immigrant community. it should be threatening to the illegal immigrant community. >> as ice director, homan led the zero tolerance policy that separated parents from their children at the border. the aclu estimates between 500 and 1000

president elect trump is inaugurated. unsubstantiated rumors have been circulating around d.c. saying the 70 year old justice would retire in the next few years. some people on the left are calling on her to resign so that president biden can pick a replacement before he leaves office. sources close to sotomayor tell abc news the justice is in good health. another tells cnn the court needs her now more than ever. and now it's time for our abc seven mornings advancer our way of highlighting some things happening in the day ahead here in the bay area. >> first, a major change for where you can park in san francisco and everywhere in california for that matter, because starting today, sfmta says it will start enforcing the state's new day lighting law, which bans cars from parking within 20ft of any crosswalk. drivers who are found in violation will receive warnings for now. in january, $40 citations will be handed out, thousands of parking spaces in san francisco and elsewhere are set to be eliminated by the new law, which is supposed to improve pedestrian safety. >> today, crews will wrap up

this veterans day. governor newsom is awarding $33 million in grant money to help vets better access mental health care. that funding will go to community organizations statewide that provide mental health treatment for vets and their families. the hope is to reduce patient wait times, expand telehealth options, and increase the number of mental health workers. >> a special honor for one very special veteran of the u.s. army national guard. it's a tribute more than 60 years in the making. here's abc news reporter danny new. >> ahead of veterans day. philadelphia's 10th annual veterans parade marched along ben franklin parkway on sunday with former paratrooper albert eels serving as its grand marshal. we actually spoke with this respected veteran a few days before when he said he was a little worried about one aspect of being grand marshal. >> i said, listen, how do i wave to the people? is it le this? >> well, he looks pretty comfortable there to me, which makes sense, since this 82 year old filly native has been involved with the military across eight decades. first off,

his father served in the army and was stationed in the pacific during world war two. >> that was one thing he used to always say. he don't want anything out of a can at the food. that's right. >> when his father returned home, he began taking albert to air shows, and soon after that, in 1955, albert began his military career by volunteering for the civil air patrol at only 13 years old. >> this is when i was with the 82nd airborne. >> he then joined the military at 17, eventually serving as a paratrooper with the 82nd airborne division and special operations. albert even remembers the 1962 being packed and ready by the plane during the cuban missile crisis. >> here's the trick about being a paratrooper. we're not afraid of anything. >> now, since his time in active service, albert has also spent decades helping his fellow veterans in so many other ways. >> buffalo soldiers, for example. >> he has spent more than 25 years in 10,000 hours as the curator of the philadelphia va museum, often using his own collection. he also volunteers weekly at the philadelphia veterans court as a mentor. >> you have to talk to each

light system for light to moderate, rain slick and slower travel out there and at times the winds will be breezy to gusty. winds aren't that strong. currently our strongest gusts right now close to the coast. half moon bay gusting to about 16mph out of the south and southwest, but the winds will pick up just a little bit later on this morning as the front moves through by 10 a.m. we're tracking that cold front crossing us, and at times those winds about 20 to 25mph. so here's future weather tracking the rain moving through this morning. the brighter colors indicating some steadier showers close to 930. that front moving through the south bay around 11 a.m. and then behind that front this afternoon, we clear the rain and the cloud cover out to finish the day with a little bit of sunshine. rainfall totals today you see anywhere from about a quarter to a half of an inch of rain coming our way this morning. here's the accuweather seven day forecast the next seven days for you. morning rain to afternoon. sunshine today. mostly sunny tomorrow. another chance of showers wednesday evening will finish out the week on friday with some light rain possible, but the payoff the weekend saturday and sunday

sunshine is back. >> gloria good morning. we do have a traffic alert for you this morning. the metering lights have flipped on at the bay bridge toll plaza. they turned on just about seven minutes ago, but you can see traffic is still pretty light there, especially given that this time of the morning it's usually a little busier. of course, it is a holiday, so less people are on the roads from highway four to san francisco. it will take you 40 minutes. we also want to tell you about a hazard in the right lane at yerba buena. so just keep that in mind. also, of course it is drizzly out there. so give yourself a little bit more time because you might encounter some slick roads. reggie aqui amanda. >> still ahead, the plan to partially close the great highway in san francisco is moving forward, but the debate is far from over. >> and here at 550, we do want to take a live look outside.

is outpacing no by nearly 2 to 1 margin. once the vote is certified, tao is out and the city council president, nikki fortunato bass takes over as mayor. a special election will then be held 120 days following certification, and alameda county district attorney pamela price is also being recalled. price is the county's first da to ever be recalled. she faced criticism for being too lenient on crime. the margin is very similar to the oakland mayor. recall nearly 2 to 1 in favor, although it's very unlikely the outcome will change. another round of results is expected later today, so who could be the next alameda county da? abc seven news reporter anser hassan takes a look at that recall race. >> recall price from the get go. alameda county district attorney pamela price face efforts to recall her. as of friday, the votes are in and price is out. >> we've never said lock them up

and throw away the key. we've always said accountability is the most important thing. oakland resident brenda grisham is with the group safe, which led the recall effort. >> they accused da price of being soft on crime and not doing enough for victims. once the vote is officially certified, price will step down. the alameda county board of supervisors will appoint an interim da who will serve until the next general election in 2026, when the recall has been successful. >> we've seen political opponents that are visible or run before fill that void, professor david mcewen says the board will likely seek a candidate with a combination of prosecutorial management and victims rights experience, and someone who was an ada or a management level and not quite an executive level, but had managed a unit like a victim's crime unit. >> once the application process begins, the board will narrow it down to 3 to 5 candidates and then conduct public interviews. those could happen as early as january. >> many of the programs at da price started will prove

effective over the longer term, and i hope that the supervisors will be looking for somebody that's thinking incarceration can't solve every problem, can't solve problems of poverty, can't solve problems of mental illness. >> christina soto deberry is the executive director of the prosecutor's alliance. it's a statewide organization focused on improving the criminal justice system. she was against the recall of da price. she says the board will also have to balance the pursuit of justice agait what she calls the very real problems in the justice system. >> da price uncovered a very significant problem around the death penalty, where black and jewish and lgbtq citizens were being excused from juries simply because of their race or their orientation. that's inexcusable. and it is unjust. and i know that the supervisors will care to have somebody that will continue to dig into that problem in the east bay. >> anser hassan abc seven news. >> the future of san francis great highway has been hotly debated. now, it appears voters decided to have a two mile stretch of the highway closed.

the latest numbers show measure k passing, getting 54% of the vote. closing off the road to cars will create a new oceanfront park, but not everyone is happy about it. the great highway was shut down to vehicles temporarily during the pandemic. the city then closed it on weekends and holidays. opinions on the measure have been mixed and contentious. >> i think that we're going to have to experience the city in ways other than being in cars a lot more as the world changes. >> it's very disappointing right now for us that did not want the great highway to be permanently closed to cars. >> opponents say the local residents directly impacted by the closure and increased traffic didn't ask for this measure, noting that a higher concentration of yes votes came from the eastern parts of san francisco for election results for races all across the bay area and the country. go to abc seven news.com. you'll find them under the top stories section. new at six highway improvement. a look at the first of its kind
