monday, november 11th, we're going to check in with drew. >> oh my goodness. that drive is wet. this. >> yeah it's a stormy morning out there. and we will find some steady rain moving through over the next several hours. live doppler seven along with satellite showing you an active picture across northern california as we track this cold front. moving through here, the closer view showing you currently on live doppler seven. just some light rain falling. we'll zoom on down to street level in the east bay, where we have some wet roadways out there. certainly highway four is going to find some slick and slow travel right now. similar story on 680. that's the biggest impact this morning is going to be those wet roadways out there. some of the heavier showers still well to our north around eureka this morning, but some of that is moving in our direction. level one this morning on the abc seven storm impact scale for light to moderate rain and that slick travel out there. temperatures right now we're basically in the 50s as we get you going on this holiday. but here's future weather that cold front moving through the north bay closer to 730, pretty much on top of the east bay. the city

around 930, moving through the south bay around 11 a.m. and then we're done with the rain and the clouds will finish the day with sunshine and drier conditions. let's check in with gloria and see how those roads are doing. this morning. >> good morning. well, of course it is a holiday. so happy veterans day to all of you out there. of course, some of you may not be going into work today because of the holiday, but if you are going to be driving, just keep in mind roads may be slick this morning. i know that's what i experienced today when i was driving here into work, but if you look at our overall map, mostly in the green, because again, traffic is light today. so things are moving. however, we do want to tell you about a crash over in oakland. this is on westbound 580 before high street. there's an overturned vehicle there. and so this is a solo spin out crash that we're told about. and this could be tied to the weather. we're still getting more information, but we just want to remind you be very careful if you are driving this morning because of those slick roads today, but there are no major delays because of this crash. we'll keep monitoring this for you throughout the morning.

looking at your drive times, mostly in the green, because again, traffic is light today. highway four to walnut creek, six minutes. walnut creek to 580 13 minutes. tracy to dublin, 24 minutes. amanda. >> all right, gloria, thank you. rain is back in the bay area and that's good news for firefighters hoping for a break from wildfires after a long, hot season. abc seven news reporter lena howland joins us live in downtown pleasanton with a look at those impacts. and lena, you say it's starting to sprinkle. >> hey, amanda. that's right. we just started to see some sprinkles roll in here in the past 30 minutes. and while it may cause some slick conditions on the roads a little bit later on today, firefighters say this has been long overdue. in the north bay, local firefighters are happy to see the added moisture as they turn the corner on fire season. we checked in with sonoma county fire district battalion chief mike stornetta. he says. there's still plenty of dry grass and brush out there to burn, but november rain could help. pause and reduce the wildfire risk. after a busy fire

season, and he hopes the public will stay wildfire vigilant. >> obviously, any of the rain that we're going to get is going to be a welcome sign for us as we look to, you know, possibly end fire season. but, you know, until we start seeing green grass grow on the hills, we maintain our readiness. >> meanwhile, over in petaluma, preparations are well underway for the city's veterans day parade. that's one of the largest in northern california, with hundreds taking part. the organizer tells us rain delays are not an option and the parade will happen, rain or shine. the event organizer is encouraging all spectators to make sure they have an umbrella with them if they plan on attending. not a bad idea to grab a rain jacket before heading out the door this morning as well. live in pleasanton. lena howland abc seven news. all right, lena, thank you. >> and you can always keep an eye on the rain and weather where you live using the abc seven bay area app. it gives you access to the same live doppler

seven tools. our weather team uses. download the app and be sure to turn on the notifications. >> new new developments this week. two bay area school districts are considering school closures. gloria is tracking that from the live desk. gloria. >> good morning. this will be a pivotal week as school boards in oakland and in san jose meet to discuss those controversial closure plans. the proposed changes could impact thousands of students and their families in oakland. the district wants to merge ten schools at five existing campuses, and you could see them right there on your screen. oakland unified is facing a looming $95 million budget deficit. the district is also considering hiring freezes and layoffs. the board meets this week to discuss that proposal. and in san jose, berryessa union school district officials will meet this week to talk about a plan to close five elementary schools and also three middle schools. they blame declining enrollment. parents in both communities have expressed opposition to the proposals. both districts have about a

month to finalize those plans. usd and berryessa union will each vote on closure proposals in december. reggie aqui. >> thanks, gloria. in the north bay, another school district could vote to make students lock up their cell phones during class. the tamalpais union high school district is considering buying pouches for students to store their phones during the day. some campuses in the east bay are already using them. 4600 students across five north bay high schools will be required to magnetically lock their phones throughout the school day. a district trustee says she feels they would be committing, quote, educational malpractice if they don't restrict phones. governor newsom signed a law earlier this year requiring all school districts to eventually limit student cell phone use. >> now to the rising concern over racist text messages sent to black children and adults in san francisco and across the country. the anonymous texts invoke slavery, addressing people by name. abc seven news reporter tara campbell takes us to a town hall where families were furious.

>> sunday, san francisco's naacp holding a town hall at third baptist church condemning racist text messages sent to students in the days following the election. >> let's do this. i'm ready. as a grandmother, a mother. we can't let them do this to our children. >> officials in more than a dozen states saying residents, including children, receive text messages from unknown numbers saying they've been selected to pick cotton, including some sfusd students. >> we have to look at how to establish policy to deal with this so that people know if they do this, there is a consequence. >> in durham, north carolina, a mother sharing the message her teenage son received a day after the election. it said good evening. >> his first and last name. you and your family have been selected to stay at the stagville plantation on december the 8th. >> a similar message for this student in virginia. >> first text i saw was somebody

texted me greeting me. first of all, greetings. and we will be there to pick you up for a cotton field. >> federal investigators racing to find the source of the messages, saying they believe some of the texts can be traced back to an anonymous web address in poland. but the original source is still unknown. that's according to the louisiana attorney general, who says her cyber team discovered the connection. >> we have no way of knowing where the individual is, who's actually sending the emails, but we will continue to investigate it. >> meanwhile, back in san francisco, reverend amos brown is calling on the community to show up in support of the students at this tuesday's school board meeting. senior pastor, you need speak out. tara campbell, abc seven news. >> a big shakeup on the san francisco board of supervisors supervisor dean preston is conceding to challenger bilal mahmood in the race to represent district five. preston is the only democratic socialist on san

francisco's board of supervisors. he posted his concession on instagram last night. mahmood has 52.7% of the vote at this point. mahmood is more moderate now, likely representing one of the city's most progressive districts, including the tenderloin, haight-ashbury and the western addition. he spoke with our partner, the san francisco standard, saying his victory shows that voters want, quote, a progressive who's going to get results. >> today, president biden and vice president harris will make their first public appearance together since the election. the two leaders will attend a veterans day ceremony at arlington national cemetery. and this morning, president elect trump has picked an ally and new york representative elise stefanik, to be a un ambassador. he is set to nominate several more people in the next few months to join his cabinet. over the weekend, trump made it clear that some former members of the administration will not be returning that includes nikki haley, who served as u.n. ambassador and former secretary of state mike pompeo, former presidential candidate and trump

ally vivek ramaswamy says he believes the president elect will bring the country together, urging democrats to give trump a chance in office. >> what you're hearing from donald trump is he is going to be a president for all americans. success is unifying. nothing's going to unite this country more than economic growth. >> the white house has confirmed president joe biden will meet with trump in the oval office this week, also telling cbs the two will discuss top domestic and foreign policy issues. >> 610 on our monday, the accuweather forecast, it is wet out there in spots. looking live at san francisco, where that light rain is currently falling 55 degrees, winds are picking up just a little bit out of the southwest at about 12mph. still dry in san jose right now. mostly cloudy, 59 degrees in the south bay. closer to 10 a.m. that's what we do. expect some of the showers to arrive in the south bay. in fact, we'll look at the rain chances throughout your day and you can see there's a big increase later on this morning. really, between about 10 a.m. and noon. that's when

seized to settle hundreds of lawsuits related to alleged sexual abuse by priests. a bankruptcy court presented the plan it could create a survivor's trust of 160 to $198

million. it would be funded with real estate sales alone and cash. the church says it could be used to settle nearly 350 child sexual abuse claims. we heard from an attorney for victims who called it a scam and a sham. that would shortchange people already victimized by the church. in a statement, the diocese said it recognizes, quote, no amount of money can fully and satisfactorily compensate survivors for the abuse they suffered, but added it believes the plan compensates them in a fair way. that also allows the church to continue its mission. now to a crackdown on large scale illegal pot grows in northern california. fairfield police seized more than 8000 cannabis plants while shutting down eight illegal grow houses over the last several months. police say the homes also contain hazardous chemicals and were at risk of electrical overload. fires. officers served warrants at two locations this weekend and handed out nearly $1 million in citations. this is

similar to a story we brought you this past august. million dollar homes in antioch turned into illegal pot farms. back then, police raided 60 homes and confiscated more than $1 million worth of illegal weed. at the time, the department of cannabis control suspected there were still more than 100 grow houses operating. investigators say the homes at the centers of both cases were owned by chinese nationals. amazon's robotaxi company, zoox, says its self-driving vehicles are hitting the streets of san francisco. these eye catching, futuristic vehicles are now shuttling employees around south of market. they're also running in foster city and the las vegas strip. they won't be carrying just regular folks until 2026. that's when the company begins really cranking out production of the custom built self-driving vehicles. >> a popular filipino condiment has been missing from store shelves because of an import ban by the fda. banana sauce, also known as banana ketchup, has been a beloved staple in

filipino cuisine since the 1940s, but last month, the fda issued an alert for certain food additives. a number of popular banana ketchup brands contain potassium iodate, and shipments from the philippines screeched to a halt. several bay area stores we called were sold out, but at at pacific supermarket in south city, we found some bottles still on the shelves. there was a four. per person limit. the shortage hit some customers hard. >> i'm kind of sad because that's one of my daughter's favorite sauce, and it's been years that we're using it. >> even reaching to our, you know, filipino purveyor that we use. you know, they even they don't even get the shipments in anymore. the good thing about making your own banana ketchup, you can control what's in it. and the sauce is brighter. it's fresh. >> get creative. media outlets in the philippines are reporting the maker of several popular banana sauce brands. they're now

for that rain, that wind at times the steadiest rain falling between about 9 a.m. and noon after 1 p.m. we're done with this front. we'll finish the day with sunshine and drier conditions. daytime highs mainly in the 50s and in the 60s. here's live doppler seven showing you that cold front moving through northern california this morning. we have some light rain right now. the steadier rain still a few hours away from us. here's a closer view on live doppler seven. some light showers working through the east bay right now. the santa cruz mountains. some lighter rain working through parts of the north bay. cloverdale approaching santa rosa. right now we do have a winter weather advisory this will kick in here right around noon and it will last until 10 p.m. we're expecting about 2 to 6in of snow falling above about 6500ft. so our highest passes could see a half a foot of snow out of this front this morning. it's a level one for light to moderate rain. slippery roads out there and breezy to gusty winds at times. winds not too aggressive right now, mainly around 10 or 15mph in our breeziest areas. they'll pick up just a little bit more this morning by about 10 a.m. that

is now up. does that mean you are getting some rain? >> yeah, that does mean we are starting to see that rain. it actually started to pick up on us only within the past hour here in downtown pleasanton. so today is going to be one of those days where you will absolutely want to grab an umbrella before walking out your door this morning. now up in the north bay, petaluma is preparing for one of the largest veterans day parades in northern california that kicks off at 1:00 this afternoon. but this year, parade goers are urged to pack their rain gear, with hundreds taking part. parade organizer joe noriel says rain delays are not an option. >> parade covid rain or shine, our community loves its veterans, so we don't expect any downturn in participation. of course, all our veterans will be here as they see far worse conditions. >> meanwhile, sonoma county firefighters are happy to see the extra rain while there is still plenty of dry grass and brush out there to burn, they

say november rain could help pause and reduce the wildfire risk. after a busy fire season. now, with this rain today as you are heading out on your morning commute, just remember to not drive through any standing water. slow down and try to give yourself a little bit of extra travel time to get to where you need to go today. for now, reporting live in pleasanton. lena howland, abc seven news. >> all right, lena, thank you. developing news, extreme weather conditions on both coasts are fueling wildfires. thousands of firefighters are battling the mountain fire in southern california and multiple fires on the east coast. gloria's tank tracking the dangerous conditions at the live desk. gloria, this is much different than we're seeing here in the bay area. >> it is. amanda, there's a large firefighting effort happening right now across the country, especially in new york and new jersey. and you could see some of that firefighting effort right here. while it did rain overnight, extreme drought conditions have fueled multiple wildfires in recent weeks. over the weekend, a falling tree killed a volunteer force ranger

in new york. he was fighting what's being called the jennings creek fire. it's burned more than 3000 acres and is only 10% contained. in southern california, nearly 3000 firefighters are battling the mountain fire in ventura county. that fire has destroyed nearly 170 acres. excuse me? structures most of them are homes. >> we lost our house in the thomas fire in 2017, and we moved to this neighborhood after the fire. >> the mountain fire has burned more than 20,000 acres since it started on wednesday. it's 36% contained. and overnight, cal fire says there was minimal fire activity. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. reggie. >> gloria. thank you. climate change is fueling more severe wildfires across the country. today, a major conference kicks off to try and find solutions. it comes as our planet reaches an ominous milestone. this year, earth reached 1.5°c above

you know, the talk of a mass deportation is racist. it's threatening to the immigrant community. it's not threatening to the immigrant community. it should be threatening to the illegal immigrant community. >> as ice director, homan led the zero tolerance policy that separated parents from their children at the border. the aclu estimates between 500 and 1000 families have yet to be reunited. when asked if there's a way to carry out mass deportations without separating families, homan said this, of course, there's families can be deported together. trump, also weighing in on the new republican controlled senate, saying whoever leads it must allow recess appointments that would give trump temporary power to fill vacancies without senate approval. the issue came up in 2014, when the supreme court ruled against president obama's use of recess appointments. now, senators john thune, john cornyn and rick scott are each running for senate majority leader. and on recess appointments. they've all signaled support. trump says

two members of his first administration will not be back. former ambassador to the un nikki haley and former secretary of state mike pompeo. they have both been critical of trump. christiane cordero abc news, washington. >> supreme court justice sonia sotomayor is making it clear she won't step down before president-elect trump. president-elect trump is inaugurated. unsubstantiated rumors have been circulating around d.c. saying the 70 year old justice would retire in the next few years. some people on the left are calling on her to resign so that president biden can pick a replacement. now, before he leaves office, sources close to sotomayor tell abc news the justice is in good health. another tells cnn the court needs her now more than ever. and now let's get to your abc seven mornings advancer. we highlight some things happening in the day ahead here in the bay area. >> first, a major change for where you can park in san francisco and everywhere in california for that matter. starting today, sfmta says it will start enforcing the state's

new day lighting law, which bans cars from parking within 20ft of any crosswalk. drivers who are found in violation will receive warnings for now. in january, $40 citations will be handed out. thousands of parking spaces in san francisco and elsewhere are set to be eliminated by the new law, which is supposed to improve pedestrian safety. >> crews will wrap up repair work this morning on interstate 80 and highway 101. in san francisco. the ramp from southbound 101, the connector at 80, is still closed, while crews finish replacing damaged concrete barriers. the southbound 101 on ramp from 10th and bryant street is also shut down. caltrans says the roads are expected to reopen by 9 a.m. also today, some businesses will be closed for the veterans day holiday that includes most banks. >> there also won't be any usps mail deliveries. however, fedex and ups will be open today. you can also expect nonessential government offices to be closed in observance of the federal holiday. >> first career touchdown ricky

outpacing no by nearly 2 to 1 margin. once that vote is certified, tao's out and the city council president, nikki fortunato bass takes over as mayor. then a special election will be held 120 days following the certification, and alameda county district attorney pamela price is also being recalled. price is the county's first district attorney to be recalled. she faced criticism for being too lenient on crime. that margin is similar to the oakland mayor. recall margin, and although it's very unlikely the outcome will change, another batch of results is expected later today. so what happens now? well, once that vote is

officially certified, price will step down. the county board of supervisors will appoint an interim da who will serve until the next general election. experts say the board will likely seek a candidate with a combination of prosecutorial management and victims rights experience, and someone who was an ada or in a management level and not quite an executive level, but had managed a unit like a victim's crime unit. those against the recall say the board will also have to balance the pursuit of justice against what they call the very real problems in the justice system. public interviews could happen as early as january. >> the future of san francisco's great highway has been hotly debated. now, it appears voters decided to have a two mile stretch of the highway closed. the latest numbers show measure k passing, getting 54% of the vote. closing off the road to cars will create a new oceanfront park, but not everyone is happy. the great highway was temporarily shut down to traffic during the

pandemic. the city then closed it on weekends and holidays. opinions on the measure have been mixed and contentious. >> i think that we're going to have to experience the city in ways other than being in cars a lot more as the world changes. >> it's very disappointing right now for us. that did not want the great highway to be permanently closed to cars. >> opponents say the residents directly impacted by the closure and increased traffic did not ask for this measure. they say a higher concentration of yes votes came from the eastern parts of the city. for election results for all the races across the bay area and beyond, go to abc7 news.com. you'll find them under the top stories section. >> new at six a unique highway improvement is coming to vallejo. this is a visual of what is called a diverging diamond interchange at fairgrounds drive and highway 37. this is right near six flags discovery kingdom. the interchange is the first of its kind in the bay area. it works by swapping the direction of

traffic in order to lower the number of intersections. officials say this will help ease congestion. the project is expected to cost $25 million and take a year to complete. >> on this veterans day, governor newsom is warning $33 million in grant money to help veterans better access mental health care. the funding will go to community organizations statewide that provide mental health treatment for veterans and their families. the hope is to reduce patient wait times, expand telehealth options, and increase the number of mental health workers. >> now it's your morning money report. consumer financial advocates say in the wake of the presidential election, a lot of young people will be doing doom spending. that means spending money to try and soothe fears about broad issues like politics or the economy. psychologically, it can give people a sense of control during stressful times. experts say this kind of catharsis can help with short term anxiety, but can also cause long term damage to a person's
