today's level one storm brought us plenty of rain, with a bit of street flooding and some tree trouble for parts of the bay area. good evening, i'm dion lim and i'm ama daetz. this is only the beginning with more rain on the way this week, let's take a live look out at a chilly night in san francisco. abc7 news meteorologist sandhya patel is tracking the rain, the snow, and when our next storm will show up, she is standing by with more sandhya. yeah, and i want to show you some incredible pictures right now. diane and ama, take a look. this is a live picture from the sierra where it is snowing right now. this is what it should look like in november. certainly the snow has been piling up in the mountains right now. still some snow showers on live doppler seven. so we're going to get you in a little bit closer. we do have a winter weather advisory until midnight. several more inches of snow with gusty winds will lead to hazardous driving conditions. we've seen off and on chain controls, so that's just the start of what's to come. here is our next storm. it is due in

midweek and it will bring us some more rain. we certainly had not just the rain here in the bay area, but the snow in the mountains. i want to take you back in time. do you remember? we got a good soaking here locally. several hours of good rain for parts of the bay area added up close to an inch there in santa rosa, 8100 ben lowman 9700. a half an inch and half moon bay, about a third. oakland san jose, napa 4000/100 in the city. so we definitely got our dose. and there is more snow coming. it is just arlier tonigs well. i'll be back with a full look at the forecast with the timeline of that next storm coming up dion. all right. sounds good sandhya. thanks. now speaking of lots of spinouts today in the sierra as drivers dealt with that snow, wind and ice, it all created major backups along highways and shut some critical sierra roads down for hours. ski season is just getting started with mount rose, the only ski resort currently open. but with all of that said,

stanford are set to go on strike. the union and the university negotiated late tonight, but couldn't reach a deal. thousands of workers who grade papers and teach classes and do research will start their picket in the morning. they shut down stanford's latest offer as they asked for higher pay, better benefits and worker protections. the university shared a statement saying in part, quote, while we respect the unions right to call for a strike, we are disappointed that it has chosen to do so. considering the progress we've made at the negotiating table and the very competitive contract offer, the university has made. now to your voice, your vote as president elect donald trump's team takes shape. he is quickly staffing up for a second term in the white house and moving fast on one of his top priorities border security. abc news reporter melissa don has new details on the incoming president's picks. >> president elect donald trump assembling his second administration ahead of inauguration day. abc news sources say trump has asked florida representative mike waltz to be his national

security adviser, and is expected to nominate senator marco rubio for secretary of state. waltz, the first green beret to serve in congress and former white house and pentagon policy adviser. trump naming two longtime loyalists to be part of his immigration crackdown with plans to implement the largest deportation program america has ever seen, calling for former white house adviser stephen miller as deputy chief of staff for policy. also announcing that the former head of immigration and customs enforcement agency, tom homan, is coming out of retirement to serve in a position trump is calling the border czar. miller and immigration hardliner has made it clear he wants all undocumented immigrants out of the country. miller seen at trump's rally last month america is for americans and americans only. trump saying hom in charge of all deportation of illegal aliens back to their country of origin. the president

elect has not said how the mass deportation would happen or how much it would cost. homan led ice during trump's first administration, when thousands of migrants were separated from their children. he was recently asked on 60 minutes if that would happen again. >> is there a way to carry out mass deportation without separating families? >> of course, there's families can be deported together. >> trump also naming lee zeldin as his epa administrator and new york representative elise stefanik as un ambassador. now opening the vacancy to her seat in the house, miller said on abc news los angeles. >> sources tell abc news tesla founder elon musk is playing a significant role in the president elect's decision making, weighing in on trump's staffing choices. tesla stocks are up 35% since the november 5th presidential election. today, shares of the company were at their highest value in two and a half years. during the campaign, musk contributed at least $119 million to a troc

trump spending group. governor gavin newsom is on his way to washington, d.c, tonight to meet with the biden administration. he's discussing disaster relief funding, as well as pushing for federal approval of state climate rules and health care updates. newsom is concerned those policies could face opposition under the trump administration. last week, the governor also called for a special session of the state legislature to prepare for president elect trump's second term. leaders at the state capitol are raising concerns tonight about new state fuel standards that could drive up prices at the gas pump after a marathon ten hour hearing on friday. the california air resources board, or carb, approved stricter clean air requirements that will change the gas wiget. the rules are intended to fight climate change but are likely to drive up costs. carb's original estimate found gas prices could rise as much as $0.47 next year, though the board has since walked that back. >> we know that in order to be successful in addressing climate change, we must continue to

reduce our fossil fuel consumption. >> assembly speaker robert rivas and senate pro tem mike mcguire both raised concerns about the policy today, indicating the legislature will have questions when it comes back in session. positive developments tonight in the work to build a better bay area, with a big boost to our water supply. our partners at the bay area news group report there is a new deal to expand one of the state's largest reservoirs. water agencies and the federal government will spend nearly $1 billion to raise the dam at san luis reservoir. it's located between gilroy and los banos along highway 152. more than a mile of the highway would have to be rerouted to make room for the growing reservoir. santa clara county would get the largest share of the new water. tomorrow night, leaders in fremont are set to discuss a plan to restrict parking in the city as part of its shifting approach to the homeless crisis. if passed, the proposal will ban parking rvs in residential areas. it will also require people to move their

cars after 72 hours. cities across the bay area have been adopting new restrictions for unhoused people after this summer's supreme court decision gave cities more freedom to conduct sweeps. san francisco just lost 14,000 parking spots, all because of a new state law. the sfmta is now giving warnings to drivers who park within 20ft of a crosswalk. the goal here is to help pedestrians with and drivers with visibility. advocates hope the policy known as daylighting decreases crashes. >> this is not just for pedestrians. this is also for the driver. what daylighting does is it gives clear sight lines to the driver, to the person that's standing in the crosswalk. >> the sfmta will give warnings through the end of the year and after that it will be citations. they'll start at $40. even if the curb isn't red or there isn't a sign, the law does not provide funding for cities to paint curbs or remove parking meters. about 5% of the city's

dampen the tribute to america's service members at the largest veterans day parade in northern california, san jose's parade has been held for 106 years, a tradition for many families. crowds lined the streets to cheer on groups from all over the south bay, and a similar show went for on locals over in the north bay. today was the 58th year of petaluma's veterans day parade, also one of the biggest paying tribute to veterans of all ages and generations. >> it's good to be honored. we enjoy the freedom that we have, and i think, you know, it's greatly because of the ones on the battlefields we fought for our country when it was in trouble, and that's so what. >> nice turnout there. well, on this veterans day, we're

highlighting one local group changing lives by helping vets connect with man's best friend. >> abc seven news reporter lauren martinez takes us inside a training tonight where veterans are taking shelter dogs and helping them learn to be so much more. >> stop, sit. so the program normally takes one year, but then again, it could take more than that. we work at the speed of the veteran normal pace. >> operation freedom paws in san martin is an organization that changes two lives in one team. veterans get to train their own service dogs. >> before i came into the program, i was in a real dark place. i tried suicide a couple times on the brink of divorce, a psychiatrist recommended ramon reyes get a service dog through operation freedom paws. >> reyes was paired with huey. >> i always tell everybody, you know, that same milk chocolate melts in your mouth, not in your hands. this guy melted. you melted in my hands and then after that, that's my life changed. step off. >> reyes has a traumatic brain

he's white, so he's like my ghost. i never knew how deep a bond between a person and a dog could be, and i never knew how empowering and how much love that is. >> each service dog team would cost around $28,000 to train, but operation freedom paws provides the healing journey for free in san martin. lauren martinez, abc seven news. it really does melt the heart. well over in the east bay, a world war two veteran was put to rest at long last. his remains were finally identified after 80 years and returned to his family. army first lieutenant herman jerry sustad was killed in world war two, in the jungles of what's now myanmar. he was buried as an unknown soldier in hawaii for 80 years. but in june of this year, dna analysis finally identified him. his remains landed in the bay area last friday, received by his 80 year old daughter, diane carbin of clayton. her father died a month before she was born.

>> friday night i got to meet my dad for the first time, and i got to touch him for the first time. and then just this afternoon, i said goodbye to him. when they closed the caske. so it's just been a lot of tears and a lot of joy. >> wow. >> sunset's daughter and his grandchildren memorialized him today at oakmont memorial park in lafayette. >> bay area genetic testing company 23 and me announced it's cutting 200 employees. that's about 40% of its workforce. the pre-holiday layoffs are part of a bigger cost cutting push at the south san francisco based company 23 andme is also stopping the development of therapeutic programs and may sell them off in september, the entire board of directors resigned suddenly over the ceo's push to take the company privat. it has been a tough year of layoffs for the bay area's tech industry. intel is among the companies cutting hundreds of jobs in the bay area. weeks later, the company is bringing back a small employee perk free coffee and tea. that's according

surf advisory that starts at 6:00 tomorrow morning, runs until 6 a.m. wednesday, breakers 14 to 15ft will bring dangerous swimming and surfing conditions, especially for northwest facing beaches. so keep that in mind as we look at live doppler seven. we do have a few clouds around right now, but we certainly got poured on earlier today. it was a welcome sight. temperatures right now 40s and 50s. you're feeling that chill. you'll need that extra blanket tonight. or turn up the heat because look at the temperature change down 14 degrees in novato. down ten in santa rosa, four degrees cooler there in san jose and 11 degrees in half moon bay, certainly from our sierra homewood camera. you can see that there were still some snow flurries earlier this evening. a lot of snow on the ground. this is what it looks like in the winter and it's already feeling like it. there's more snow coming to the mountains by sunday night. we're talking about another 12in at kyburz 13 kirkwood, donner, blue canyon, eight inches of snow. live view from emeryville.

camera a beautiful view overnight tonight. chilly, especially inland. tomorrow a mix of sun and high clouds after some patchy morning fog. and then wednesday afternoon going into the evening, we have our next round of rain coming. so midnight tonight. an isolated shower up around mendocino county can't be ruled out tomorrow morning. watch out, there is going to be some areas of fog, and it may be a little bit on the dense side. later on we'll see the sun and then high clouds will stream in from time to time, filtering the sunshine, your morning temperatures. it's almost like a winter like chill 30s and 40s with some areas of fog. so definitely bundle up tomorrow afternoon. you're looking at highs that will range from the upper 50s to the mid 60s. it should be a nice break. and then we'll bring in some gusty winds wednesday afternoon as that next system gets in here 25 to 30 mile an hour winds topping 30 there along the coast at 4 p.m. on wednesday. and that's basically around the time that we're expecting some of the wet weather to move in. 2:30 p.m. in the north bay, scattered showers for 4 p.m. or a little bit of drizzle. i don't think

the model really is picking up on this, but certainly as we head into thursday afternoon and evening, some more rain coming through going into early friday, sierra is picking up rain and snow and then we have another system due in here sunday night going into monday. so i'm going to add this all up okay. so the next system taking you right on through wednesday. and then the sunday night system at least the start of it about a 10th to just over a half an inch of rain expected for most areas. ukiah over an inch of rain. here's the accuweather seven day forecast a chilly morning we are looking at a level one for wednesday afternoon. going into thursday. lingering chance of showers on friday, but really it's sunday night into monday that we have another opportunity for some wet weather coming to the bay area, so keep those umbrella
