accountable, and we cannot have that kind of person leading our sheriff's office. >> that report, which was done by an independent investigator, claims corpus office, uses retaliation and intimidation tactics against deputies who question her leadership. it also claims the sheriff has an inappropriate relationship with her chief of staff, who she personally hired. >> i think there's clear evidence in the report of who is truly running the sheriff's office. >> the drama has gotten the attention of many in the san mateo county community. at one point, wednesday's meeting had over 1000 virtual attendees during public comment. the sheriff herself took time to again deny the allegations against her. >> this inquiry was politically motivated and one sided. it was filled with lies. >> perhaps the most shocking point of the meeting was when corpus announced she was making her chief of staff an assistant sheriff. that action received heavy criticism from the board, which also opened up several pathways that could lead to corpus removal. one option would be putting in a charter

earlier today and brought us some rain. so the highest totals were in the north bay. but as we take a look at a closer view, notice a line of showers just off the coastline tracking them for you. now heading in the direction of el granada and san mateo. so get ready. and then eventually pushing off into the east bay as we widen the picture here. this level one storm covering not just today, but tomorrow as well. it has brought sierra snow some thunderstorms, and as we time this out tomorrow morning, we may see a thunderstorm here locally 7:00 in the morning in the north bay. we're seeing those showers, potential thunder, scattered showers continuing at 9 a.m. as you look here, all of the bay area has the risk of thunderstorms. tomorrow also covers much of northern california. and meanwhile, as we take a look at this time lapse from tonight, this is how it looked in the sierra. yeah, the snow was just coming down and it was dumping. i'll be back with a look at the advisories plus the

congressional republicans during the trip. >> the man accused of killing tech executive bob lee last year in san francisco took the stand in his own defense today. he testified that lee attacked him with a knife for telling a bad joke at lee's expense. he then reenacted his version of the deadly encounter, saying he redirected the knife back at lee, but he said he had no idea lee was fatally injured when he walked away. lee's brother was in court and had this reaction to his testimony. >> we obviously did a lot to damage his own credibility today and just seeing him get angry and stuff on the stand. i'm feeling, you know, that's what my brother saw that night, right? it's him getting angry and him, you know, his story makes no sense to me. >> he is supposed to resume testimony tomorrow. >> bay area council and local groups are calling on governor newsom to deploy chp on bart, just as he's done in oakland. in a letter, a coalition of over 100 aapi groups are requesting

the governor address violence on the trains and in stations they call attention to the asian american woman shoved into a train in july. and they say the woman fatally stabbed at a station last weekend was also asian american. polling from the bay area council found riders have been staying away from bart over crime and safety concerns. >> to the south bay now, where some people who call 9-1-1 may end up getting an uber instead of an ambulance. a new program will direct calls about nonlife threatening health problems to nurses instead of sending paramedics right away. abc seven news reporter lauren martinez explains the problems this is designed to solve. >> a sheriff's office dispatch. how can i help you? >> santa clara county emergency responders are offering a new kind of service when you dial 911 for an emt, maybe you don't have access to health care. >> maybe you're uninsured. maybe you don't have a ride. or maybe there's other things that prevent you from getting access to your primary care. your only option is 9-1-1. and unfortunately, by doing that,

it's taking that service away from other folks. >> the new system launched wednesday and it's called 9-1-1 nurse navigator. 9-1-1 dispatchers still pick up the call, but if an in-person response is not needed, the caller can be connected to a licensed nurse. >> assess that patient over the telephone. either provide nurse line advice or make them a clinic appointment or a primary care appointment. arrange transportation. if that's an issue, you could end up getting a rideshare to a clinic or to an urgent care, or to a pharmacy if you need a prescription filled. if you don't have access to transportation currently. >> so that's interesting. an uber or lyft could be called for someone in need. >> absolutely. and just again, to reiterate, it's for those low acuity calls. again, some of the stomachache headaches. this is not reducing service is adding the level of service. >> the nurse navigator is part of a pilot program offered to residents in the west valley or south county. >> even today. my parents still

one of the wildest stories of alleged insurance fraud you'll probably ever see. >> yeah. four people are accused of faking bear attacks to get payouts. the bear. it was actually someone dressed up in an elaborate costume. when you first look at this surveillance video, it appears a bear is climbing into a rolls-royce and roaming around inside the vehicle. it lasts for nearly a minute, and then the bear is done doing its thing and appears to get out. there's damage left behind. apparent claw marks on the seats and the doors. the four suspects even submitted this video to an insurance company as proof. investigators say they did this two other times. the other vehicles were mercedes. each time they provided video footage to other insurance companies showing the purported bear rummaging through the vehicle and leaving behind damage. however, the first mistake. each claim filed was for the same location, lake

arrowhead in san bernardino county, and on the same date. then a biologist from the california department of fish and wildlife looked at the videos and determined the bear was actually a human in a bear suit. when detectives searched the suspect's home in the los angeles area, they found that bear costume, complete with claws. the four suspects are accused of defrauding insurance companies out of more than $140,000. >> wild story. well, the public got its chance tonight to ask questions about a plan to merge up to ten schools in the oakland unified school district. the school closures are part of the district's effort to fix a huge budget deficit. mergers are seen as a more immediate fix, with the budget gap expected to only get worse. the district says it's seeing a drop in enrollment, with operating costs going up, so the plan is to merge the ten schools. you'll see them on this map here into five. it's estimated this could

save around $3 million. one of the student members of the board had some sharp criticism. >> merging schools is just like, just a nice word to say that they're closing the school. like, we cannot hide the fact that they're going to just close down schools. and it's not fair. we're limiting the access to younger kids, especially now. these are elementary schools that are getting closed down. i'm going to be for real. >> a final decision on the merger plan could come next month. >> happening tomorrow. a critical decision that could transform san francisco's ocean beach. the california coastal commission will vote on a plan to build a seawall to protect against erosion and rising sea levels. city planners say the $175 million project would also shore up a sewage tunnel and wastewater treatment plant along the coast, but those with the surfrider foundation have concerns. >> seawalls make erosion worse by disrupting the natural flow of the ocean. sand will get

pushed outwards, kind of pinched out along the seawall, and over time there will be no more sand, no more natural beach left at all. we are concerned that the city will not be able to keep this seawall buried as they claim. >> the city's plan also includes a seaside trail and other features. the surfrider foundation wants to see a seawall made of dirt and more long term maintenance plans. >> despite massive popularity, the how weird street fair is coming to an end. organizers announced they won't get permits for 2025 because of growing costs of permitting and production. they lost thousands of dollars in 2020 when they were forced to cancel. and again, this year, when their may plans were postponed by a rainstorm. so although their september event was a success, organizers say operating without sponsorship or grants is just too overwhelming in the sierra. some el dorado county residents are worried that they could get stranded in their homes if a winter storm brings too much

snow. the county says it doesn't have enough snow plow drivers to fill night shifts. officials say they currently have 16 drivers employed, but they need ten full time night shift workers. the county's job posting expired yesterday, with only four people applying for those open positions. >> all right, well, we got some rain here today, depending on where you are in the bay area. >> we did. and more coming depending on where you are in the bay area. meteorologist sandhya patel is here. sandhya. yeah. >> and we're going to talk about where it is right now. dan and ama, we do have a few showers that have developed right along the san mateo coast. so let's check out live doppler seven and i will zoom in on where we are seeing some moisture. this is street level radar right around montara airport street, el granada, sneath lane. definitely watch out. there are a few showers. these showers heading towards burlingame at 11:22 p.m. into fremont at 1214 in the morning. so just getting started with our next round. a live view

from sutro tower looking at a beautiful downtown san francisco rainfall so far. varnado up in sonoma county, three quarters of an inch, a third in santa rosa, a few hundredths from san francisco to oakland to richmond. ben lomond in the santa cruz mountains. ten a 10th of an inch of rain. looking at a live view from the sierra right now certainly looks like snow falling. as you will notice, just a few flurries. but earlier tonight they did have more snow and there is certainly more coming. so right now our live doppler seven is tracking the snow showers winding down. but they'll pick right back up again as we head towards the next couple of days. let's talk about what happened. front came through and it brought us the rain that we received today. it is pushing a lot of energy into the pacific northwest behind it. this is the area that we're watching. it is cold, unstable air and that's going to trigger the potential for thunder. certainly we'll be seeing some more showers going into tomorro. also seeing the surf picking up. so a high surf advisory starts at 7:00 tomorrow morning. runs
