7:45 am
they found after three years of use of the active ingredients in zepbound as well as monjouro. after three years of use, not only was it associated with a reduction in weight, but it reduced the risk of developing diabetes by more than 90%. when you think about what that means, in terms of the millions of americans who live with the diagnosis it can provide a significant amount of hope. >> michael: no doubt. dr. widmer, the study said some glp1 drug, but not all, may be effective in treating alcohol use disorder. >> correct. this was a very large study out of sweden. 220,000 individuals with a prior diagnosis of alcohol use disorder. what it looked at was the glp1 drugs like semaglutide, the active ingredient in ozempic. what they found was semaglutide showed a 36% decrease in alcohol related hospitalizations in individuals with alcohol use disorder.
7:46 am
liraglutide showed 26%. what's really fascinating about this is that these glp drugs appear to outperform other drugs that already have fda approval and that we use every day in addiction medicine for alcohol use disorder. again, this was just an observational study. no direct comparisons were made. so we need to do a little more research before we can draw any concrete conclusions. >> george: seems like we're learning about a new application about these drugs every week. >> it does. it does. i'm speaking with doctors about this medication and what it could mean in the future. it's remarkable. we're seeing results in terms of benefitting heart failure, reducing the risk of heart disease, stroke. some reports about reducing the risk of dementia. when it comes down to it these medications are mimicking a hormone. what we're finding out is that hormone affects more than just obesity, as well as diabetes. it also leads to these other results.
