come to a stop as the agency that runs them faces a massive budget deficit. good afternoon. thanks for joining us for abc7 news at three. i'm kristen sze the sfmta is trying to avoid potential bus and train service cuts while it scrambles to boost revenue. the agency faces an annual deficit estimated 239 million and $322 million by 2026. muni was previously betting on proposition l, which would have taxed ride hailing services and give muni about $25 million annually. but prop l failed in this election. mta director jeffrey tumlin tells abc seven news the agency is now looking at all options to cut costs. that could include closing three cable car lines. abc7 news reporter cornell bernard will have much more on this big story and his interview with tumlin coming up on abc seven news at four. it's official. a portion of the great

highway in san francisco will be closed to traffic, but we won't know what exactly will happen with the space until december, 54% of san francisco voters voted in favor of prop k. it closes a portion of the highway to cars to create a coastal park. the two mile stretch is between lincoln way and sloat boulevard. we're learning a promenade with temporary art installations, murals and seating will be up by early next year. according to the examiner, park officials will apply for a state permit with the california coastal commission in 2025, right along the great highway is ocean beach, and a critical vote today could transform that. the california coastal commission will vote on a plan to build a seawall to protect against erosion and rising sea levels. city planners say the $175 million project would also shore up a sewage tunnel and wastewater treatment plant along the coast, but those with the surfrider foundation have concerns they want to see a seawall made of dirt and more

long term maintenance plans. we'll dive into both sides of the story coming up on abc seven news at four. now turning to our weather. parts of the bay area are seeing scattered showers as a level one storm. on our exclusive abc seven news storm impact scale moves through in san francisco. one of our crews caught a downpour earlier today at ghirardelli square. it's just one place seeing rain this afternoon. there's a mix of clouds and sun as we take a live look outside for you right now. abc seven news meteorologist drew tuma has more on the rain timeline on the abc seven storm impact scale. >> it is a level one today. the biggest impact would be wet roadways. a brief lowering in the visibility as those downpours move through. we have a chance of a clap of thunder and we have rough surf along our coast right now. so future weather we just timed out that line of storms. you see them pushing off to the east into the 3:04 p.m. hour. we may get a big break for sunshine across the region, but that may be enough energy left over to instigate 1

or 2 more isolated showers to finish out the evening. and again, rainfall totals will be less than a quarter of an inch. here's the high surf advisory today. breakers up to 18ft. that threat continues through saturday, so highs today with those scattered downpours upper 50s to the mid 60s. that's about it. overnight tonight things quiet down. they do cool down 30s and 40s under mix of stars and clouds. still have a winter weather advisory in effect for the sierra this until tomorrow evening. up to a foot of snow is possible on our highest peaks. and if you are thinking of driving to tahoe tomorrow, especially tomorrow night, be aware as that snow falls, it may be hard to see. visibility will go down and the roads will become slick. so we could have some issues on 80 and 50 as the snow moves through. here's the accuweather seven day forecast for the next seven days. a few scattered showers today and then tomorrow. get ready for brisk sunshine saturday. it's going to be cold in the morning. widespread 30s and low 40s. much of the weekend is quiet late at night on sunday. another chance for rain, but it's quickly out of here for drier, brighter

conditions. on monday. >> san mateo county leaders are demanding the sheriff resign after the release of a report that found she abused her power and had an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. the 400 page report suggests sheriff cristina corpus is having an inappropriate relationship with her chief of staff. in a special meeting of the board of supervisors wednesday, the sheriff announced that she promoted her chief of staff to a new assistant sheriff position. that announcement got a lot of criticism from the board, who unanimously voted to declare no confidence in the elected sheriff to continue the job. an independent investigator released a report tuesday claiming corpus office used retaliation and intimidation tactics against people who question her leadership. the sheriff took time during a public comment at yesterday's meeting to deny the allegations against her. there are a few allegations in the growing assault case against sean diddy combs. another alleged victim is seeking $5 million from the
3:06 pm
music mogul over an armed confrontation dating back nearly 30 years. abc's senior investigative correspondent aaron katersky has more. >> if a man is suing sean diddy combs for $5 million to compensate him for what he alleges was an armed confrontation, dewitt gilmour says he was leaving a new york city club in 1996, when combs and his associates pulled up in a gold convertible and started taunting him with derogatory language and threats of violence. his lawsuit says. the music mogul's associates flashed guns and shots were fired. representatives for combs did not immediately respond, but they have denied all of the other civil lawsuits that have alleged sexual assault. a woman who filed one of those has now revealed her identity after the judge rejected her request to remain anonymous. candace mccreary was 19 and in college in brooklyn when she alleges combs sexually assaulted her after a photo shoot. >> this decision by this judge may have a chilling effect in that other people who want to go anonymous in their lawsuits against sean combs may think twice in terms of filing a
3:07 pm
lawsuit themselves. >> more money, more problems. it's just the way it is. >> and this morning, a former member of combs inner circle is speaking out. diddy's rap protege, moses shyne barrow, was with him and his then girlfriend jennifer lopez, the night a gun went off inside a manhattan club. diddy was acquitted in the case, but shyne was convicted of assault and sentenced to ten years in prison and deported to his native belize. shyne telling nightline co-anchor byron pitts combs orchestrated for him to take the fall. >> someone that was prepared to have me sit in jail for. i was facing 25 years to totally destroy my career, destroy my life. rob me of my freedom to be a participant in that. of course, it doesn't surprise me that he would be accused of the atrocious things that he is because you know what he did to me and my family, you know, was to me, demonic. >> combs representatives say mr. combs categorically denies mr.
3:08 pm
barrow's allegations, including any suggestion that he orchestrated mr. barrow to take the fall. they added he appreciates the path mr. barrow has pursued and wishes him continued success. >> that was aaron katersky reporting. combs is still fighting for release on bail and there's another hearing on that next week. up next. whooping cough is taking hold in the bay area and an alarming increase in measles cases. plus, just in president elect trump nominates rfk jr to lead the federal agency in charge of health policy. what does that mean for you? doctor patel will

end of september. the most recent data available. that's a big increase since 20-23, which had about one third of that number the entire year in the bay area. san francisco has seen 84 confirmed cases this year, compared to one last year. marin county has reported 336 cases, up from 17, and contra costa county has had 109 cases, up from 16 last year. so joining us live now to help us get some answers on this and other major medical headlines. abc seven news contributor doctor alok patel. doctor patel, it's great to see you. >> likewise. i wish it was over some more jolly headlines rather than infectious disease outbreaks. but i'm honored to be here. >> yeah, but it's jolly when people can take care of themselves because they have the proper information. right? so that's why you're here. okay. so what is pertussis and why is it raging? >> so pertussis is a bacterial infection very contagious. and
3:12 pm
it causes that telltale coughing. that whooping cough is what the name is from. there's another name for it which is called the 100 day cough, because people can cough for weeks at a time. can affect your ability to sleep, to eat. some people even cough so hard that they can break ribs. and so what's insane about whooping cough is it can start out as a common cold and then progress to this cough can even be deadly in certain people. completely preventable from a vaccine. but we've seen rates kind of dip down, especially in young children. on top of the fact that whooping cough can kind of have these surges and peaks every 3 to 5 years. so put it all together. and this is the situation we're in. >> okay. so how do you prevent that. and if you've got it what do you do about it. >> congratulations. we have a way to prevent this that's been safe and effective since the mid 40s. vaccines before we had a vaccine over 200,000 cases per year. that number dropped 99% by the mid 70s. the vaccine is still safe and effective. in addition to that, what we've already been doing hopefully handwashing, saying, well, if you're sick, wearing a mask, if you have outward symptoms, keeping sick people away from you will also help. okay.
3:13 pm
>> boy, this conversation is bringing up like memories of good times. i mean, not good times because it was like during covid when we first met. those were not good times, but we did have fun conversations about how we can take care of each other and ourselves. and one of the things we enjoyed doing was two truths and a lie. >> i thought you would never say it. >> yeah, the quiz show is back. all right, so i hope our viewers are ready to help you. i think so. you remember how to do it, right? so he's going to present three things, and one of them will be alive. pick it out. okay, let's go. >> rock n roll. so we have it pulled up on the screen. chris, which one of these is not true? is it a pertussis or whooping cough is a bacterial infection, which is also known as the 100 day cough. >> okay, so that's give me because you just i don't know i don't know, it could have been i could have been throwing you off. >> okay. is it b an eighth cup of water in the average swimming pool is about the same concentration of fluoride in our drinking water. or is it c there are microplastics and a lot of our food and most are about the size of a human hair.
3:14 pm
>> we keep that up there. as we ponder this, there are microplastics. >> which one of these is not true? >> the size of a human. i am going to say c is not true because microplastics are smaller than that, i think. and i think i know the point. you're trying to make with b, so c is my final answer. >> just like the old days. you're so savvy and smart with it. you were absolutely correct. i was making a point about how little fluoride there is in our drinking water. and also you're right. nanoplastics are about 1/70 the size of a human hair, and that is found all over our environment, in our foods and the products we use. and unfortunately, in our bodies. >> so are you saying that we don't need to worry too much about some of the things people are talking about in terms of fluoridating our water? as you know, rfk jr, who was just announced by president elect trump on truth social as the next huge health and human services secretary, if he's, you know, confirmed, one of the things he's talked about was maybe taking fluoride out of our
3:15 pm
drinking water. >> you know, i like everyone to be empowered and to really understand what's happening, what i want people to be is realistic about this very small amount of fluoride that is in our drinking water, that has been shown to protect our teeth, the layers of our teeth, and decrease the risk of cavities, which is especially important in rural areas where people may not have access to dental services or fluoridated toothpaste. now, you can have too much fluoride if your drinking water exceeds that recommended amount, which ours in the bay area does not. about seven micrograms per 7mg/l. yeah. if you have drinking water plus on top of using fluoridated products, that could be an issue as well. but all this talk about fluoride decreasing iq, it's a little overblown when you're just looking at drinking water. it's not that much. >> okay. what about the other point you raised with the microplastics? because that was in the headlines with regard to throw out your black cooking utensils, the plastic in there so bad for you. but i know there were different thoughts about that study. so tell us what you think. should i throw it out or not? >> here's the reality if you have the ability to replace all
3:16 pm
your plastic, plastic, black plastic, you see what i did there on accident? if you have the ability to replace it all with metal, with glass, with wood, that's a great idea. okay, now this is the issue. black plastic is more likely to have these recycled plastics from electronic goods, which have flame retardants in them. those products have been linked to human issues such as cancer, developmental issues able to disrupt our endocrine system. and when you mix these plastics together and recycle them, they can wind up in black plastics in our kitchen tools. so one important thing for everyone to understand is plastic is not great to get inside of our bodies. if you are heating up plastic, if you have scratch or damaged plastic, even increase risk. so you want to make sure that you're being very careful about any plastic you're heating. don't put plastic in the microwave. even plastic in the dishwasher could be a bad idea. so that's why i recommend stainless steel cooking tools. get rid of those nonstick pans, because that is a plastic coating too. oh my gosh right. tons of plastic and water
3:17 pm
bottles okay, so we're switching glass. >> it is okay. please i want to get to a couple other big topics. measles is one of them because we saw a new report out. the data is pretty scary about the rise in that globally and absolutely about 10.3 million cases globally according to the world health organization. >> this year we're approaching 300 cases of measles and that's only what's reported. kristen sze. so just like we talked about the whooping cough, we have seen a decrease in the amount of kindergartners entering the school system who are fully vaccinated against common childhood illnesses, including measles, which let me give people a reference of how contagious measles is. one case of measles in a group of people who are unvaccinated can spread to about 16 other people. and like covid 19, measles can be airborne. that's why with measles, we want 95% of the population to be vaccinated to prevent that spread. just one kid who's unvaccinated can spread it to everyone around them who are vulnerable. >> are we starting to fall below that 95% mark? and is that do you think this is a result of
3:18 pm
covid and the kind of resistance to vaccines that came out of that in public opinion? >> we already have fallen behind that 95% mark. and in some states it's worse than others. in some counties it's worse than others, which is why we see clusters of outbreaks. part of it is vaccine hesitancy. part of it is people trying to play catch up. part of it's health care access. so we need everyone out there to know that vaccines are safe. they work. they save hundreds of thousands of lives. a year, and we need to make sure our kids are up to date. >> okay, speaking of vaccines, i also want to talk about, with the holidays coming up, people traveling for thanksgiving and christmas, we've been hearing that there's kind of a clock ticking in terms of if you want some protection with like covid and flu, right? >> the clock is about two weeks. so that is kind of the rough estimate. for how long you have full protection when you get vaccinated against covid 19, which and influenza. those shots are available for everyone above the age of six months. and just like covid 19 and flu, they're both going to be targeting the most common circulating strains and young children and older adults may also be eligible for
3:19 pm
an rsv vaccine. so guess what? protection against all three. especially important for people who are vulnerable. >> can you go get all three at once? >> you could you could. hat trick for preventing infectious disease okay. >> and then real quickly measle. at what age. what's the schedule for the vaccination? >> two shots. that's going to be in younger children to get measles around age one and two. you're going to do that. and so that's important again to pay attention to your child's vaccination schedule. and as always, make sure you're getting information from good, reputable sources. that's us. >> like us. you talk to mattel always a wealth of information. likewise. >> yeah empowering the bay area. that's why we're here. >> that's right. okay. don't go away because do you like disney? disney. >> disney? of course. i just took my daughter. it was epic. exactly. >> okay, so stick around for the story coming up, a big day for disney and theme park lovers tomorrow, the new tiana's bayou adventure attraction opens at disneyland, and we sent one of our abc seven colleagues. sorry, not

talking about tiana's bayou adventure. it's taking the place of splash mountain. our parent company, disney, sent abc seven news anchor reggie aqui to get a first look at the new ride. >> i rode tiana's bayou adventure yesterday and everybody was coming off soaked. and they are all wearing ponchos. not me. i just wore my regular clothes with no change of clothes as a backup. to new orleans square, and this is the home of tiana. now she has. her mom has a store here. she has her restaurant, which i'm standing in front of tiana's palace. and now when you walk along the rivers of america, it'll take you right into her new attraction called tiana's bayou adventure. it takes place after the movie. so now tiana is an entrepreneur. she has her own foods company. we get to meet
3:23 pm
her friend louis the alligator mama odie, and they are trying to find a band so they can have a party. there's no trauma, there's no drama. it is just pure fun. and when i tell you that i had the best time on this yesterday, and if you loved what it was before, i think you're going to see this as a major upgrade. it's great music that you know from the movie. and just as i said, a whole lot of fun. i'm going to bring in a new orleans native, lindell, who's here with the disneyland resort and let's face it, new orleans square is the king of all lands at disneyland, am i right? >> you are correct. it is the king of all lands at disneyland, and now it has a queen. it has a queen, right? it's a location that is beautiful. it's rooted in a lot of history. the park obviously was was opened in 1955. new orleans square was the first expansion of that park. in 1966. also, it was the last project that walt worked on himself, which is really, really important. and now we've continued to expand upon that
3:24 pm
legacy with eudora chic boutique, with tiana's palace and now tiana's bayou adventure and this great band that just magically appeared out of nowhere. the jambalaya jazz band just magically appeared out of nowhere. >> i feel like walt himself has made this happen. yes. yeah. now you really can't see his signature. all throughout this land. absolutely. it's now. so now it's pirates of the caribbean, haunted mansion, tiana's bayou adventure. to me, that's a triple threat. it's a triple. >> it's a triple threat. and our guests can enjoy them. enjoy them all right, so right now, you know, at disneyland, we actually are just launched a new offer. we didn't know if you were aware of that. tell me. but if you buy two tickets, you get a third ticket free. however, you have to be a disney plus subscriber and it's only for the holidays from november 18th until december 27th. so if you are disney plus subscriber, go to disneyland.com/offers and look up the ticket offer. >> now you're from new orleans, born and raised? yes, new orleans is famous for its beignets. yes, but even new orleans doesn't have mickey vignettes. no beignets. may i
3:25 pm
taste one of tiana's mickey beignets? >> you shall. now there's a technique to it. what is it? either you want to don't mind getting dirty or you don't want to get dirty. if you do not want to get dirty, just do a slightly bend. >> slight bend. >> like i'm bowing. >> like you're bowing. >> i'm bowing to princess tiana. >> so the powder goes on the ground and that on you. >> oh, then these are still fresh. fresh. >> oh, love those beignets. got to go. all right, up next, a new look for the warriors. the team today unveiled the latest city edition uniforms. and they pay tribute to san francis

is prominently featured on the team's new city edition uniforms. the design was unveiled at an event earlier today, and abc seven news reporter zach fuentes was there and got to see the new threads up close against the backdrop of the iconic golden gate bridge. >> the warriors unveiled the all new city edition uniforms presented by rakuten last year was all about the cable car and its 150th anniversary, and this year the golden gate bridges are shining star in our uniform. the intricate designs representing the golden gate bridge can be seen up and down the new uniforms. some of them you'll catch right away, like the custom inspired font design inspired by the golden gate bridge nameplate, which showcases the names of all of the construction workers who built the bridge long ago. >> we pulled that into the front of the jersey to mark our brand. >> other details are in the form of easter eggs, not quite as obvious to the eye, but just as meaningful. >> on the side panels is when you really start to see the
3:29 pm
architecture of the bridge come through. so on both side panels, from top to bottom, you'll be able to see the architecture of the towers, the rivets that build the bridge, and in addition, those rivets speak to our team name. and then on the other side it will speak to our love to san francisco. >> on hand for the unveiling of the new uniforms was the general manager of the golden gate bridge highway and transportation district, dennis mulligan, highlighting the obstacles that had to be overcome for the bridge to become the icon it is. >> when this bridge was built, there was no state or federal funds available to build it, so people in six counties bet the farm literally. they voted to put their homes, factories, vineyards and farms up as guarantees for the bonds to build the bridge. >> mulligan said the symbol of what the golden gate bridge now is makes for the perfect partnership with the warriors. >> this is an area where people get things done, and the bridge is a symbol of that. but so are the warriors, you know? so the key is never bet against the bay area and the warriors new uniforms are going to be worn for the first time during the

team's matchup against the atlanta hawks. >> that's happening wednesday, november 20th at chase center in san francisco. zach fuentes, abc seven news. >> the holidays are officially here. the macy's christmas tree in san francisco's union square is now shining bright. yesterday, people gathered for the 35th annual tree lighting ceremony, and one of the most iconic parts of macy's holiday display is still going strong and will soon be up. the san francisco spca will be hosting kittens and puppies in the windows starting tomorrow. thank you for joining us for abc seven news at three. world news tonight with david muir starts right now. and i'll see you back here for abc seven news at four. tonight, breaking news. president-elect donald trump picks vaccine skeptic rfk jr. for secretary of health and human services. to oversee the nation's health, the cdc, the
