will advise local water systems to remove flouride from drinking water, though experts say it helps fight tooth decay at the low level currently recommended. he also said he wants to replace 600 people who currently work at hhs. many public health experts are alarmed. the former acting director of the cdc saying kennedy as secretary would pose incredible risk to the nation. telling abc news he is consistently spread doubt and concerns about our public health system. he's led an organization that's undermined confidence in our vaccine system, which is the safest in the world. >> very anxiety provoking for many public health colleagues. part of the goal of public health officials is to reinforce trust where there's public skepticism. when you put someone in a role that has a history of skepticism, that is going to cause a lot of misinformation.

>> reporter: this morning new questions about trump's pick for detense secretary pete hegseth. abc news learning he was part of an investigation into an alleged sexual assault in 2017. the trump transition team was made aware of the incident earlier this week after trump named him to the position. hegseth's attorney saying the incident was fully investigated and hegseth was cleared of any wrongdoing. overnight trump unveiling another pick naming doug bergum to be interior secretary. another former rival turned trump loyalist. >> george: so many questions being raised. we'll see how the senate handles them. rebecca? >> rebecca: george, thank you. meantime, president-elect trump nominee for attorney general matt gaetz is facing major push back on capitol hill. rachel scott is there with the latest. good morning, rachel. >> reporter: hey, rebecca, good morning to you. the house ethics committee ended its investigation into matt

gaetz after he resigned from congress once donald trump tasked him to serve as attorney general. but this morning democrats and republicans in the senate tell me they want to see the findings of that investigation. now there is growing pressure on that bipartisan committee to release their report. this morning republican senators signaling the confirmation of matt gaetz as the nation's top law enforcement officer is far from a done deal. >> we'll talk about it for certain. i know he's going to have an uphill battle. >> reporter: senate democrats and republicans calling on the bipartisan house ethics committee to release their findings from a months long investigation into gaetz for alleged sexual misconduct and illicit drug use, allegations gaetz has long claimed are false. how critical is to it have access to what the house ethics committee has found in their investigation? >> i think there should not be any limitation on the senate judiciary committee's investigation, including whatever the house ethics committee has generated. >> reporter: so you want to see it? >> absolutely. >> reporter: sources say the committee was preparing to vote to release the report as early as this week.

after trump announced his nomination, gaetz abruptly resigned from congress. the move immediately ending the investigation. can you still release the report? sources tell abc news the committee heard from a young woman who said gaetz had sex with her when she was just 17 years old while he was still in congress. it's a claim gaetz denies saying this false smear following a three year criminal investigation should be viewed with great skepticism. the lawyer representing that woman calling gaetz nomination a perverse development saying she was a high school student and there were witnesses. the justice department gaetz could lead was investigating him for obstruction of justice and second trafficking. gaetz denied those allegations, too. even as the doj closed their investigation, the allegations raising doubt. >> people will spend a lot of political capital on that. >> reporter: trump's decision to nominate gaetz came within 24

hour. trump not impressed by a handful of other candidates ultimately persuaded during his flight back from washington, d.c. gaetz even suggested he should be up for the job. >> i'd fire every little kicker at the j. edgar hoover building and send them all packing. >> reporter: threatening to take an axe to the justice department. >> we either get this government back on our side or we defund and get rid of, abolish the fbi, cdc, doj, every last one of them if they do not come to heel! >> reporter: so i'm told this morning vice president-elect j. d. vance as well as matt gaetz himself have been making calls to senators, trying to gauge support. i've talked to at least five republican senators. all of them acknowledge this could be an uphill battle, whit. >> rainee: rachel scott for us, thank you. now the red flag warnings in the northeast raising fears of more wild fires, and a new threat that could impact the gulf coast now. ginger has the latest.

good morning. >> ginger: it's been 22 years since the state of new jersey has been in this severe of a drought. we got the new drought monitor. new york city, most of massachusetts, all of delaware is in severe drought. that's the foundation of our fire problem. as we go through the weekend we're going to have a warm-up. it's also going to be very windy. we'll be squeezed between this high low. it increases how the winds shift over the northeast. we could see gusts up to 40 miles per hour. relative humidity as low as 19%. this is starting to look so much like a western fire situation from new hampshire and vermont all the way down through pennsylvania. you have elevated fire danger. when's the next chance of rain? my husband keeps asking me. he's like, we desperately need it. there is a shot toward the mid to end of next week. as we've been seeing them come through, they've been coming through dry. let's talk about what's not dry. that is sara, tropical storm hanging out near honduras. lots of rain with that one. lit peter out over the yucatan peninsula. it will get picked up with this cold front which will bring a

ton of cold air next week. tropical moisture for florida by midweek. let's head back to you, george. >> george: thank you very much. now emergency landing after an alaska airlines plane lost a tire on takeoff. stephanie ramos is at the airport with details. good morning, stephanie. >> reporter: george, good morning. passengers on an alaska airlines flight from washington, d.c. to los angeles went through a really big scare when their plane lost a tire but went on to lax. overnight alaska airlines flight 309 making an emergency landing in l.a. after reporting an issue with one of their landing gears. passengers told to brace. >> brace, brace, brace. >> reporter: the shaky landing caught on camera. met with a round of applause from relieved passengers. >> we just came to a nice smooth stop.

and i think everybody unclenched. they all -- we all got out of our emergency positions. and everybody just let out a big breath and everyone started to clap and there were some, you know, screams. i think we were all relieved. >> reporter: the boeing plane sustaining tire damage on takeoff. dulles airport reported finding debris that may have been from the tire of the plane. making an emergency landing in los angeles. the left tire visibly damaged. alaska airlines saying in a statement, while this incident is a rare occurrence, our flight crews train extensively to safely manage through many scenarios. we understand this might have been a concerning moment for our guests on board. we apologize for what they experienced. the company says they will investigate and see what caused that tire on the boeing to malfunction. the aircraft will not be in service during that investigation, rebecca. >> rebecca: such relief no one was hurt. thank goodness for those flight crews.

okay, stephanie. thank you. we turn now to the suspected isis supporter, accused of plotting an attack on u.s. soil. he appeared before a judge, as we're seeing video of his arrest by the fbi. the bureau said he scouted potential targets. our chief justice correspondent pierre thomas has the latest. good morning, pierre. >> reporter: rebecca, good morning. he is being detained this morning, no bond because the government believes he is an isis radical that poses a clear and present danger. you can see agents taking no chances. assault rifles at the ready as they race to his residence. prosecutors claim the 28-year-old had attempted to buy a gun, was researching how to make an explosive belt and was scouting potential sites for targeting including military recruitment facilities. authorities say he was obsessed with isis and making videos that glorified violence. he has plead not guilty but the fbi claims he told investigators if it had not been for his family he would have already conducted an operation like 9/11.

whit? >> whit: certainly alarming. pierre thomas, thank you. new report from the pentagon about unidentified flying objects. there were hundreds of new reported sightings over the last year. some the government can't explain. chief global affairs correspondent martha raddatz joins us with details. quite the talker, martha. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, whit. it does. it all sounds straight out of a science fiction movie but these unidentified airborne objects are taken very seriously by the pentagon and intelligence community. this morning their new report revealing that these sightings are on the rise. navy pilots have seen them. >> my gosh. they're all going against the wind. the wind's 120 knots. >> reporter: more than 1,600 unidentified flying objects have been reviewed by the government anomaly resolution office over the years. 98% found to be debris, drones

even large birds. new numbers this morning from may of 2023 to june of 2024 show 757 new sightings with 21 of them that cannot be explained. and all 21 mysterious objects were seen near national security sites witnessed by multiple people or captured on sensors or videos. while the pentagon does not know what they were, they are quick to steer the public away from little green men. >> to date the department has discovered no verifiable evidence of extraterrestrial beings or technology. >> reporter: at a hearing the former head of the pentagon program investigating these objects says nothing should be ruled out. >> have they discovered programs? >> yes. >> were they designed to reverse

alien craft yes or no? >> yes. >> let me be clear. advance technologies are monitoring sensitive military installations. >> reporter: while pentagon officials do stress they have no evidence of any of this being alien technology, they have not ruled that out and are continuing to investigate every sighting. >> george: always raises so many questions. thanks. now some tense moments in kentucky. a worker trapped beneath rubble at a construction site for almost nine hours. lara is here with the story. >> lara: it was a terrifying scene in louisville kentucky after a construction worker fell into and was trapped in what fire officials are describing as a void. electric crews thankfully arriving on the scene within minutes. but it would be hours of painstaking work to save this man's life. overnight an incredible rescue played out in louisville over the course of nine hours. >> we've seen a lot of people rescued over the 24 hours i have been doing this. i've never seen anything like this. >> reporter: a man working at a

construction site falling into a void completely buried by gravel and concrete. >> they have one victim that's down approximately like a ten foot hole that's covered with rubble. >> lara: that's when rescue team responded digging him out by hand. >> we are moving tons and tons of debris by hand, by buckets. you imagine the bottom of a tunnel. you have to shore up everything else to create a safe space and then continue to dig this person out. >> lara: the rescue operation shown live on local television stations as crews worked into the night, with painstaking care to save the man's life. eventually bringing in a giant vacuum to remove some of the debris. finally, a sigh of relief as the man was brought to the surface and carried away on a stretcher. >> this is why we took this job. we want to help people. it's not like the movies. you're not always successful. when you have success like this it is a tremendous feeling. >> lara: thank goodness. louisville's fire chief said he

george gascon filing more than 600 pages of documents showing the brothers to be, quote, model prisoners. with one corrections coordinator testifying, in my 26 years i have not met an inmate who has been this committed to helping others. 1996 the brothers were sentenced to life in prison without parole for the brutal shot gun murders of their parents. now the d.a. calling for the siblings to be released on good behavior. the document offered exhaustive lists of groups and organizations the brothers have either founded or participated in including mindfulness group, hospice and addiction, a no violence challenge, prison green spaces and art projects. lyle, seen here with a mural he recently painted with his art group. the book also has letters from family, friends and staff with one officer writing of erik that

his notorious public image is starkly different from the inmate who he says is a rehabilitated man who humbly strives towards helping those in need. multiple netflix productions coupled with social media sparking a new generational interest in the case. the brothers' claims of sexual abuse galvanizing many to call for their freedom. >> the case is a unicorn. despite all that significant evidence, the jury found them guilty of double murder for financial gain that is premeditated. >> reporter: gascon telling me last month it was their rehabilitation in prison that convinced him. >> those were brutal murder. they were premeditated. that's why they got life without parole. >> reporter: you aren't recommending they be released immediately? >> i am recommending they be released because i believe they are not the same people that we are seeing 35 years later. >> reporter: now uncertainty with gascon unseated and nathan hochman taking over the case soon telling kayna whitworth, he will thoroughly review everything.

chips to maintain what moisture there is. we are hearing from a lot of different farmers who say it's going to take a lot of effort to keep their young christmas trees alive. >> this doesn't seem to fit the modern spirit. >> reporter: like charlie, the christmas tree industry is searching for a christmas miracle. >> here we have a tree that couldn't survive this summer. >> reporter: jeff hill is a christmas tree farmer in pennsylvania. he says because of this season's drought and unusually warm weather, his youngest christmas trees are not going to make it. >> you can see the root system just doesn't go deep enough to get the moisture. >> reporter: this is an issue for many tree farms. the mature trees ready for market are generally in good condition. the trees that have just been planted are not growing. it could cause a massive shortage in years to come. it takes about seven years for a christmas tree to get from when they plant it to the size for sale. >> reporter: steve wagner works at a tree farm in hadley, massachusetts.

controversy. the president overnight heaping praise on robert f. kennedy jr. after naming him to be secretary of health and human services picking a known vaccine skeptic to be in charge of the nation's health system. kennedy endorsed a host of conspiracy theories including falsely claiming childhood vaccines cause autism. although numerous studies have shown that is simply not true. there is no link between vaccines and autism. most of the vaccines have been used safely for decades, saving countless lives, even eliminating some diseases. if confirmed kennedy would be in charge of one of the biggest departments in the federal government. many in the medical community are sounding the alarm. learning hegseth was investigated in alleged sexual assault. hegseth's attorney telling abc the incident was fully

investigated and he was cleared of any wrongdoing. questions remain about whether hegseth, gaetz will get enough support to be confirmed. george? >> george: lots of question. mary, thank you very much. whit? >> whit: a new gma health alert. a study that finds increasing your activity by as little as an hour per day could add years to your life. dr. darien sutton is here. good morning. always great to have you. first break down this study. >> just a few extra steps can add hours to your life. if you think about it, that's phenomenal. researchers are looking at this question and trying to answer it using math model, data from the health center on statistics regarding mortality data as well as a study looking at physical activity. what it found, adults over 40 who practice walking at least one extra hour. that translates to six extra hours life expectancy. that might not seem like a lot but if you are able to go beyond that and exercise at the highest capacity, that can extend to 11 years additional life span.

that is phenomenal when you think about the simple method of walking. >> george: what does extra mean? >> we talked about the five minutes adding it on extra. it looked at the minimum amount, the lower adult 50 minutes a day. that's about 50 minutes going between work, catching the train. when we say extra, that means adding on that extra hour regardless of what you're doing baseline. that is what gets you that extra six hours. >> whit: we are showing some other activities. you're focused on walking. what are some other ways here? adam doing a great job on the treadmill. what are other ways to reach that top 25%? >> these are fantastic examples. adam doing walking. we've got weight training. we have even got examples of yoga. this study didn't look at additional methods but does beleaguer the point that basic methods of movement can add years on your life.

>> george: some book news. barnes and noble 2024 book of the year. book sellers from around the country say it's the book they felt most proud to sell. already found several awards. on book stands now. >> rebecca: i loved that book growing up. countdown to thanksgiving and a story of kindness and generosity that exemplifies the holiday. two men brought together by a brooklyn pizzeria. theo alano received the shock of a life time when he was told he learned that he was in end stage kidney failure. >> i said, where did this come from? it came so quickly. i had no issue prior. >> rebecca: his condition quickly declined. it became clear his best chance of survival was finding a donor. the wait list would take years

the year. you're going to make it so it tastes delicious and isn't nearly chaotic. these are things you can make in advance. they're super simple. delicious cookies you can bring to your holiday gathering. >> rebecca: put me to work. >> a basic cookie. i have butter and sugar already creamed. i'm going to add egg, orange zest, if i can get it out. little vanilla. we want to add our dry and wet ingredients separately. just mix that together. >> rebecca: are we adding this in, a little bit? >> we're going to add a little bit of this in there now. >> rebecca: i'm going to try it. >> let's see how messy this gets. turn that down a little bit. >> rebecca: slowly, but surely. >> we don't want to overmix it. little bit more is fine. do you know what, just throw it in now. throw it all in there. >> rebecca: this is the fun part. >> let's do it.

all in there. baking is fun. you don't have to worry too much about measuring everything every time exactly. just have fun with it. >> rebecca: i like that. >> we're going to let that dough mix here and let it chill in the fridge. in the book i have got a recipe for it. very simple. >> rebecca: it is simple. i never knew it was so simple. >> or you can buy it from the store. milk in the pot. we add sugar. we add vanilla. we add cinnamon stick here for an extra touch of flavor. >> rebecca: nice. >> and then there's a little secret ingredient. baking soda that helps with reaction and caramelization. we'll let that sit for three hours. that's how long it takes. >> rebecca: three hours. you can just leave it. >> you definitely have to stir it. i'm not going to lie. stir, go get a cup of coffee, come back and stir a little bit. our dough has been chilled.
