surrounding san mateo county sheriff christina corpus. today, the deputies union told abc seven. acting assistant sheriff matthew fox has resigned after 25 years with the county. the news comes as the county board of supervisors is pushing sheriff corpus to step down. a scathing 400 page report was released this week accusing her of abuse of power, creating a culture of intimidation and retaliation, and having an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. so far, corpus has refused to resign. a san jose state volleyball player is suing the athletic conference in which her team plays. she's demanding the mountain west conference declare her teammate ineligible to play, including in the upcoming conference tournament. her complaint stems from unconfirmed but widely reported reports that one member of the team is transgender. because of this, opponents have forfeited six matches against the spartans. plaintiffs include co-captain brooke slusser. san

jose's suspended associate head coach, as well as players from various teams in the conference. in court documents, they allege title nine and first amendment violations, saying the transgender athlete is getting preferential treatment and that the concerns and feelings of others on the team are dismissed. menlo college professor melissa michaelson expects the results of the presidential election will only encourage more actions of this kind. >> because trump and his allies have been so vocal about their opposition to transgender people being allowed to live, their lives openly, i think we're going to see more and more of this kind of activity. >> san jose state says they have not been served with a lawsuit and have no comment at this time. a heartwarming morning in oakland today. the 480 students at laurel elementary school received free coats to keep them warm in the coming winter months. it's an initiative by nonprofit operation warm, which
3:04 pm
manufactures high quality coats and shoes for children in need. principal john stengel says this comes just in time, because many of his students have been feeling the chill as the temperature has been dropping. >> i know we're going to bring a lot of smiles on students faces today as they get a free coat. a lot of our students, they come from families that that don't have the resources that that one would hope for. and so i know these coats are going to be well received and really make a difference in their lives. >> kaiser permanente northern california donated more than $21,000 to pay for the coats and kaiser volunteers helped students find just the right fit. some sprinkles are in the forecast for this weekend, and you're going to need your coat because it's going to get cold. here's abc seven meteorologist drew tuma with the accuweather forecast. >> we do have that risk of some high surf. those waves are elevated elevated right now. bodega bay point arena 13 foot waves right now could see breakers up to 18ft. so we have
3:05 pm
dangerous swimming and surfing conditions. our northwest facing beaches are most at risk when it comes to this dangerous surf. here's live doppler seven along with satellite. we had those showers and downpours yesterday afternoon. that system is now pushing off to our south and east, but is still bringing some snow showers to the sierra, so we still have a winter weather advisory in effect this until 10 p.m. so the snow showers are winding down over the next 12 hours. but later on tonight we could see an additional four plus inches of snow on our higher peaks. could see upwards of a foot of fresh powder. so here's how it looks right now. future weather a lot of this you see on your screen likely falling after the sun goes down tonight. so if you're traveling to tahoe, after the sun goes down, you'll have low visibility thanks to the snow falling these deeper blues you see on our higher peaks. that's where you could see about 6 to 12in of new snow. back here at home, we are finding temperatures pretty uniform around the bay shoreline from redwood city to castro valley to san jose. temperatures
3:06 pm
right now are in the 50s. it's a similar story to as you take a look at the north bay and the inland east bay, a couple of spots in lake county coming in even colder. 44 is that current temperature in clear lake. let's go hour by hour for you. future weather later on this afternoon. here's 330 upper 50s, lower 60s for you under those sunny skies. now heading into the nighttime hours. friday night plans were good. we have clear skies, but underneath those clear skies, temperatures cool off really rapidly. so by 8 p.m, already finding many cities, dipping into the 40s, and then even colder air moves in here closer to 1030 11 p.m. so today it's brisk sunshine. we're totally dry. no threat of any showers, upper 50s to the lower 60s, which is a few degrees below average for this time of the year. then tonight we have that freeze warning, some of the coldest air in about six months descending into the region. so saturday morning overnight lows could dip as low as the upper 20s in some areas. so overnight tonight we'll track those very cold temperatures even around
3:07 pm
the bay shoreline. you'll find that freeze getting close to us. upper 30s lower 40s in the overnight lows. as we head into the weekend. sunday we do bring in the storm impact scale. it is a level one, but the impacts are minimal because the rainfall is very light. so saturday no issues. here's saturday afternoon mix of sun and clouds. even sunday morning we're quiet, but we're overcast. and then in the afternoon, some pops of green on your screen throughout the evening as well. and again, rainfall amounts less than about a 10th of an inch. so here's the accuweather seven day forecast showing you it is brisk today. cold tomorrow morning with that freeze warning. scattered showers here sunday afternoon and evening. but that storm system moves out fast. dry weather returns monday and for much of next week. >> all right. sources tell abc news. vice president elect jd vance is working the phones with senators to gauge their support for former congressman matt gaetz. gaetz is president elect trump's pick for attorney general. it comes as there is major debate in the house over
3:08 pm
whether to release the findings from a bipartisan ethics investigation into gaetz. abc news reporter perry russom has the latest. >> today, the congressional battle over whether the findings from a house ethics investigation into former congressman matt gaetz should be released. gaetz, president elect trump's pick for attorney general. >> i think it's wise, always wise, to know the facts before you jump into anything. >> transparency is always the best course of action, particularly when it relates to high ranking government officials. >> president trump has made his selections, has made his picks, and i think the senate should do everything they possibly can to approve those. >> today, house speaker mike johnson says he does not think the committee's report should be released to the senate. >> i believe it is very important to maintain the house and tradition of not issuing ethics reports on people who are no longer members of congress. i think it would open a pandora's box. >> gaetz resigned from congress after being nominated for attorney general, automatically closing the bipartisan ethics

committee's probe. he was being investigated for alleged sexual misconduct and illicit drug use allegations. gaetz denies. sources tell abc news the committee heard from a woman who said gaetz had sex with her when she was 17. gaetz calling it a false smear. democratic congressman glenn ivey is on the ethics committee. >> i think the senate certainly had a right to request it. yeah, i can't talk about our internal deliberations, but the information that they've requested, i think is totally reasonable for them to have. and in fact, i think it's essential for them to get that kind of information before they make a decision of this magnitude. >> the committee was supposed to have a meeting today, but it was postponed. a member of the committee tells abc news their chairman, republican congressman michael guest, decided not to meet today. perry russom, abc news, washington. >> up next, elon musk's x updates today to its terms of service. it's causing many to leave the platform and find alternatives such as blue sky.
3:10 pm
we'll talk to a cnet tech reporter who's been following this to
3:11 pm
3:12 pm
terms that may have you paying damages to x or supporting its ai. training. it's enough to drive 1 million new users to an upstart. new platform called blue sky. just in the past 24 hours. what are the new terms on x and what is blue sky? joining us live now to talk about this migration cnet technology reporter abrar al-haidari. abrar, it's good to see you. >> good to see you too. thanks for having me. okay. >> so i guess we should start here with the key changes in x's new service terms that have caused such an uproar. we do
3:13 pm
have a full screen and a bar. i realize this is not everything, but please take a look and try to help us understand what's going on here. >> yeah, well, let's focus on the biggest thing that's got a lot of people in an uproar is the ai training. so a lot of social media platforms have been saying that anything that you post, anything you interact with can be used to train their eyes. everyone has their their own version of ai. and grok is the version of ai on x. so what they've said is that if you post anything on x, then that information could be used to train grok. now the good news is you can actually opt out of this. the thing people were really concerned about was that this new terms of service said that you may or may not be able to opt out of it. i just checked today. so far, i'm still able to opt out of grok using my own, you know, post to train its ai, so hopefully that remains the case. but that's really the big thing that got people really worried is did we agree to have, you know, our our personal information used for something like ai? >> there were a couple other things. and maybe you can touch on these legal jurisdiction. something about settling disputes in a court in texas.
3:14 pm
and i know the damages part refers to something about maybe you have to pay twitter or x like $15,000. what is what is that about? >> yeah, that part i actually did not look into because everyone was so riled up about the ai. but i can talk about the blocking. that was something that people were talking about nonstop. i kind of just see what people are most riled up about. that means that even if you block somebody, they can still see what you're posting, so they can't interact with what you're posting. they can't message you, but they can still see your posts. and people think, well, that's the whole reason i'm blocking somebody so they don't see the things that i'm sharing. so that was another really big reason for this exodus. >> i see. okay. well, look, even before this, many people have started to find x a little toxic maybe, right? the election and all the tweets or posts before that kind of exacerbated that feeling. and this is sort of the last straw for some. and it seems like blue sky is sort of the beneficiary. it's the hot new thing that some are
3:15 pm
migrating to. can you explain what is blue sky? >> yeah. so well, to set the scene here, the election just happened. a lot of people may not agree with elon musk's political views that he's been expressing on x, which is why a lot of people have left x in the last week. and so a week after the election, blue sky said that they got a million new followers. and then yesterday they said they got another million new followers within a day. so blue sky looks a lot like what twitter used to be. right? it the layout looks very similar. it was actually created by jack dorsey, who was one of the co-founders of twitter. and so this is a platform where the biggest difference is that it's decentralized. and basically what that means is that users can host their data on other servers. beyond blue sky. you don't have to. it's super technical. don't worry about it. you can just make an account, hop on and essentially post like you would on on twitter. this is it was founded in 2019, but it used to be invitation only up until february of this year, which is why so many people have been joining because it's a lot easier. you don't have to get,
3:16 pm
you know, the invite code from somebody who's already on the platform. >> right? okay. so have you played around? i actually started following you just in the past half hour, and i noticed you don't have a post yet, doesn't it take all of us contributing to, you know, it takes a while to build up a community right where you actually have the conversations. otherwise just a place where everybody has handles, but nobody's engaging. >> that's exactly right. so you've you've caught me, right? so i made a blue sky account a while ago, and i made it when there was kind of an earlier exodus from twitter, back when elon musk first bought it. and i haven't posted because there weren't a lot of people on there at the time. and you're right, we need not only more people on these platforms to want to engage on there, but we also have to be driven to do so. so do i want to post on x, on blue sky, on threads, on linkedin? you know, all these platforms sometimes it's exhausting. but yeah, as more people move to these platforms, i think threads is seeing a lot of success as more people pivot. there too. >> what about mastodon? that was another one that some people were talking about for a while. right? like which one of these is going to be the next real
3:17 pm
public town square? right. the one where, i mean, are you seeing any sort of traction for one more than the others? >> you know, honestly, threads has been, i think has had the lead here because it is meta owned a lot of people. if you already have an instagram account, it's really easy to move to threads. they've just reported 275 million monthly active users. that's a very large number. and i think the familiarity of, you know, meta platforms is what's easy. but also making an account is so easy. and i think that's what's so critical. right? mastodon is a bit more technical. people may not want to do that. but if again, if you already have an instagram account, it's pretty easy to go over to threads. >> okay, so how can interested users get started on blue sky or any new platform to, i guess both retain or get connections, right? because that's what you want. otherwise there's nothing interesting to see. >> exactly. i've seen a lot of people posting, you know, on linkedin or even on x saying, hey, i'm over on blue sky, come follow me over here. we've seen this a couple times though, right? like we've seen over the past several years. every time there's a controversy with elon musk or x, we've seen people
3:18 pm
say, hey, come follow me over here. and then people would have inevitably keep posting on x. but we have seen, you know, major publications like the guardian, for example, say, hey, we're not posting on x anymore. so maybe as more people kind of share what their handles are, you go ahead. you make an account, you find all those people. but it is a lot of work, right? you got to rebuild that following and follower list, right? >> okay. so for people who are actually considering deactivating their x account or quitting it, what steps should they take to protect their data? and you know, if they're concerned about either these new terms or otherwise, the first thing i would say is think about downloading an archive of your data. >> if you don't want to lose everything you've ever posted, you can go into settings and privacy, and there's an option there to find a way to download everything. and then again, once you're back in settings and privacy, you can go into your account and there's a deactivate your account option. so you go ahead and click that. and then if you realize, oof, i didn't really want to do that, you have up to 30 days to change your mind. you'll essentially log in. it'll say, do you want to reactivate your account? and you
3:19 pm
say, yes, and then you're back. >> my concern about deleting and just being gone completely is that somebody else can then take over your name. they can give it to somebody else that handle, and then they can start posting as you really. >> that's a really good concern. right. and the thing is x has said that they have a policy against impersonation or fake identity, but it becomes really blurry because now you can get that verified checkmark just by buying it. right? so it used to be you actually had to verify, you know, that you were an entity or a person, and that was the only way. now you can essentially buy your way into that. so it does become easier for people to potentially impersonate others. but they do say that you can report any violations, and violations can lead to suspension. so hopefully that curbs it. >> oh, i've reported a couple of times. let me just say each time i did not get a satisfactory response. i'm sorry. okay. but let's just say if you decide to keep it, what precautions should users take? right. if they decide to continue, you know, again, some of the maybe new things that they don't like. >> yeah, i think, you know, always stay cognizant of the
3:20 pm
fact that, you know, be aware of the fact that ai is out there training. so go ahead. and if you want to uncheck the troc option and make sure that your data isn't being used for ai, i've done that. good idea. but also, you know, always media literacy is always important. so whatever you see on any platform don't automatically, you know, buy into everything. just be cognizant, especially in times like these of everything that you're seeing. and you know, if you can set up security measures like two factor authentication to make sure that people don't hack into your account, those are all just generally really good practices. no matter what platform you're using. where is the ai generated? >> little warning label when something isn't totally true? >> yeah, i know, keep an eye out for that too. but even that misses, right? >> all right, heidi from cnet thank you so much for joining us for the conversation. >> thanks for having me. see you on blue sky. >> i better see a post from you. i'm going to be the first one to like it. all right. please. oka. next, the true crime case in atlanta that became a national story. we talked with 20-24 deborah roberts about how it

father gunned down by a man wearing a disguise. who's the killer? and what's the shocking reason why? abc seven news anchor gloria rodriguez talked with 2020 co-anchor deborah roberts about why it was such a fascinating case for her to cover. >> i'm a georgia native, so this is a story that took me back to my home state. and i remember when this when this story happened, when you heard about this shooting outside of a daycare center. i mean, so many people were just absolutely flummoxed. who would lead? what would lead someone to actually shoot? someone who had just dropped off his child at daycare? why would somebody want rusty sneiderman dead? so it was fascinating to me. of course, as a parent, to want to think about what you could have imagine being in those shoes, but also to the way police put this case together. it was one that was
3:24 pm
actually just sort of like a needle in a haystack. initially, when they heard that there was a bearded man who had been seen on the premises who was driving a certain vehicle, you're going to hear from police about how there was a stroke of luck in trying to locate this vehicle. if he had been driving something different, they might not have been able to solve this case, but also just the places that it took them. it was a very unlikely suspect who they were looking at a corporate executive. what would lead him to want to murder? this executive happened to be connected to the wife of rusty snyderman, the victim here. did she have anything to do with it? so it was a case that just had a lot of twists and turns, and many of us remember the headlines, but we didn't remember all the details. and tonight on 2020, we take you inside this case and how difficult it was for police to solve it, but also to how surprising it was as they got this case a little bit further and it went to court. obviously we don't want to give too much away, but what was that connection between the suspect and the wife? well, you're going
3:25 pm
to find out tonight why prosecutors began to seriously look at rusty schneiderman's wife. she was actually even testifying in the case of the alleged assailant and prosecutors and defense lawyers both began to look at her with a little bit of a strange eye. so police began to turn their attention to her. well, tonight you'll find out what she has to say about that. of course, during the course of the trial. but also what happened in the courtroom case. there was somebody who was convicted in this case, but the court of public opinion continued to buzz for a long time around this case. so tonight, you'll hear from the police officer who was on his very first murder case. he talked to me and took me back to the scene to talk about why this case was so important to him to solve. and you're also going to hear from an eyewitness who was right there on the scene. but more important, you're going to see some of that, that all interesting courtroom video of this trial. and how prosecutors were able, were able to nail it. and a big
3:26 pm
twist to and a big turn for prosecutors when they actually decided to pursue a case against rusty schneiderman's wife. and suddenly they found themselves in a little bit of a pickle trying to take this case a little bit further. so all of those details tonight on 2020 and an ending that might just surprise you. >> sounds like a fascinating case, deborah. thank you so much for talking to us today. >> of course. thank you. my pleasure. a great one 2020 episode fatal disguise premieres tonight at 9:00 right here on abc seven. >> plus, it's available on hulu. we now know who's hosting the 2025 oscars. the announc
