president elect trump's nominee to lead the department of defense was once accused of sexual assault here in the bay area. >> pete hegseth is a popular fox news host. the accusations stem from an incident at the hyatt regency hotel in monterey in 2017. hegseth was accused of sexual assault after a speaking appearance at a republican women's event. the person who reported the assault is not identified, but had bruises on her right thigh. that is according to the report. >> now, no charges were filed in the case. hegseth was also flagged as a possible insider threat by a fellow service member due to a tattoo on his bicep that's associated with white supremacist groups. >> los angeles has elected a new district attorney, and amid growing calls to release the menendez brothers from prison, he says he has a lot of evidence to review before voicing his support. new d.a. elect nathan hochman says he will look over the case true to the facts. >> the third track is something called resentencing and that is triggered when a da files a

motion with a court to allow for resentencing to occur. gascon did that 12 days before the election. now, he could have done it eight months before the election, when the original request was received, but he waited until 12 days before the election, when he was 30 points down as to whether or not i'm going to support that particular motion or not. you got to do the hard work to make that decision. >> the brothers admitted to killing their wealthy parents with shotguns in 1989. prosecutors say they did it for money, while their defense argues it was in self-defense following years of sexual abuse by their father. >> new developments in sacramento, where a mistrial was declared today after a jury was unable to decide the fate of the man who killed a rookie police officer from the east bay. tara o'sullivan was from pleasant hill but was working for the sacramento police department. she was killed while responding to a domestic violence situation in 2019. jurors were trying to decide whether adele ramos, who pleaded guilty to o'sullivan's

murder, should get the death penalty. the vote needed to be unanimous but deadlocked at 11 to 1, leading the judge to declare the mistrial. no word on whether the da will try for the death penalty again or present another sentencing option. >> the family of the late malcolm x has filed a $100 million wrongful death lawsuit against the u.s. government. one of x's daughters and her lawyer said at a news conference today. they have uncovered new evidence that they believe proves the nypd and fbi conspired to kill the civil rights icon. malcolm x was assassinated in 1965. he was shot a total of 21 times by a group of men in front of his wife and daughters in san francisco, a dog was shot and killed by police who were responding to two attacks. >> it happened near the parking lot for the safeway in the fillmore district. the officers saw another attack in the parking lot, which is when they opened fire. another dog was shot minutes later at a playground a couple of blocks away. abc seven news reporter

tara campbell spoke with officers and has more. >> a fatal shooting in the safeway parking lot in the fillmore district, san francisco police called to the scene just before 11:00 friday morning, responding to reports of three large dogs attacking a person walking a smaller dog. when officers got to the area, they saw the dogs attacking a different person. >> officers made contact with one of the dogs and an officer involved discharge occurred. that discharge was a result of a fatal shooting here in this parking lot. >> animal care and control officers corralled a second dog. police then chased after a third dog to the nearby kimball playground, where officers shot again. >> the preliminary investigation at this time, we're able to state that non-lethal methods were used to try to detain and stop these dogs. >> the dog that was detained at the park and the one captured in the parking lot, are both in good condition. >> it was just really scary. it

was just really scary. >> animal control officers say the dogs are cane corsos, a breed known for being large, strong and protective. all three were adults weighing approximately 120 pounds each. >> we was really close nearby and we just hurried up and just ran around the corner before we heard the extra stuff, but we did see the dogs running rapidly in the parking lot. >> she got mauled by a dog in that same parking lot. >> darrell daniels says he was bitten by a dog in a different attack here two years ago, and lost a toe. >> what i would like to see is it to be against the law for people to have dogs without muzzles when they come outside? >> the dogs involved in friday's attack appeared to have been living in this van, but police say it's too early to confirm. >> we're working with animal care and control to determine the contacts that they've had. as that is part of our investigation and animal care and control is also conducting their own independent investigation. >> the smaller dog that was first attacked friday morning was taken to the vet. there is no information on how that dog is doing the person police saw

being bitten suffered an arm injury and was taken to the hospital. they are recovering. tara campbell abc seven news. >> turning now to the weather as we get ready for some low temperatures, here's a beautiful live look outside at the conditions right now for the details on what's to come though, let's get to abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel. sandhya. yeah, it is going to get real cold and particularly in the north bay valleys where a freeze warning goes up midnight to 8 a.m. tomorrow. >> temperatures as low as 29 degrees. you can bet that your sensitive plants and your pipes could see damage. so protect them along with your pets. as we check out the temperatures for tomorrow morning, anywhere from the upper 20s at lakeport to the mid 40s in san francisco. live doppler seven is tracking another system that is due in here on sunday, and that will bring us occasional showers. it's not going to be an all day event, but 1130 in the morning you'll see a few showers at 2 p.m. in the afternoon. and we are also tracking some rough surf. there's a live view from

santa cruz where the surf's up. a high surf advisory until 11 a.m. tomorrow. 13 footers right now. bodega bay, but breakers could be 12 to 18ft. watch out. it's dangerous swimming and surfing conditions. we also have the king tides. so a coastal flood advisory until 4 p.m. on monday. tomorrow's tide will be just after 1040 at seven feet. so be careful. full look at your weekend forecast is coming up, dan. >> okay, sandhya, thanks a lot. we'll touch base shortly in the north bay, those freezing overnight temperatures sandhya is talking about have homeless advocates on alert and hitting the streets today, warning those living outside about the approaching cold snap. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard is live in petaluma tonight where advocates are reaching out and cornell, understandably concerned. >> reporter yeah. that's right. hey, dan, you know what the sun has now set? it is definitely getting chilly out here. and homeless homeless advocates, they have been on the move all day trying to get the word out. the freezing temperatures are

coming. >> we might have a sweater. do you need a sweater? >> i would love a sweater. >> joanna garcia and her team of crisis intervention workers are on the streets of petaluma, letting unhoused folks know summer is gone and cold weather is coming. >> there's hugo. i haven't seen you in a while. >> these advocates are part of the safe team from nonprofit outreach petaluma people services center. they're making contact with whoever needs help with crisis or housing assistance, or just something warm to wear. the job is not always easy. >> there's a couple people who are new in town, and, you know, at first they're a little hesitant. they're like, oh, what do you leave me alone? you know, we're like, hey, like, we just want to offer you a water, a snack, a warm coat. and that's kind of how we start the conversation. >> with freezing overnight temperatures expected, giving people options to stay warm and safe is the goal. >> if you get cold, let's say get hypothermia, then you end up at the hospital. the hospitals are impacted already for a variety of different reasons. >> the safe team has been partnering with police for

from a fire at a building in san mateo county. this afternoon. this happened around 3 p.m. near rocky creek road, north of la honda. that's a heavily wooded area off skyline boulevard near the coal creek open space preserve. it appears that fire is now under control. >> high ranking officials within the san mateo county sheriff's office continue to resign as sheriff. christina corpus ignores calls for her resignation. this is all amid serious allegations of misconduct. abc seven news reporter monica madden has been following this story. all week and has the latest developments tonight. >> exits amid scandal in the san mateo county sheriff's office. acting assistant sheriff matthew fox stepping down thursday, and an unnamed captain also is on the exit. >> we're actually very concerned about morale in the sheriff's department. >> the unnamed officer reportedly leaving after he was asked to arrest carlos tapia, president of the deputies union and critic of the sheriff. >> i will not tolerate the sheriff's abuse of authority and retaliation. retaliation against

our union. >> it all follows a tumultuous week in the department after a months long investigation dropped tuesday accusing corpus of abuse of power. having an inappropriate relationship with her chief of staff, victor i, and j, as well as using racist and homophobic language. >> well, it's disappointing, but the matter has been referred to the district attorney's office. it's in the process of being referred to the attorney general's office. i have every it's being referred to the civil grand jury. i have every faith and confidence that as this continues, sheriff corpus will be put under oath and be asked to answer these questions. >> in a statement, the department tells abc news that it does not comment on personnel matters, but that sheriff corpus thanks fox for his service to the community and wishes him luck. she denies all wrongdoing. i and j telling abc seven's dan noyes via text quote, i found the report to be fundamentally flawed, lacking in verification and unsubstantiated by evidence, and this is a coup. the board is trying to destabilize the office and unseat an elected official.

it is all part of a conference hosted by san jose state university and featuring some of the biggest companies and best minds in the field. here's abc seven news south bay reporter dustin dorsey. >> san jose wants to be known as the ai capital of the world, where the best and brightest minds come to innovate, create, and dream. to do that, some of those future innovators might come from san jose state, and that's where industry experts, including those from google, nvidia and ibm were on hand friday, hoping to inspire the next generation of innovators. >> having those discussions with the industry and our students and our faculty members will help the inclusive development of ai in the future. >> ai is a tool that's it's exciting. there are lots of things one can do, but one has to use it responsibly. >> and that was the exact message on campus. google director of engineering muktananda says that ai responsibility is especially true when it comes to education. >> students learn when they are deeply engaging with a subject.

if we want to really help ai help kids learn, we need to move ai models from being answering tools to being teaching learning engines. >> onida says ai is not meant to be a crutch. it should be a tool for students and staff. he says google is working to further develop that tool for learning to really happen, there needs to be engagement with the material, deeper understanding students to be inspired for them to have metacognition about how they are learning. >> and our goal is to make ai able to do all of those things. >> the possibilities of ai are endless, and that's why many want increased accountability through regulation. these experts say just like the creation of ideas, regulation can't come from one person or one group. you don't want to block ai creativity. it just needs to be channeled in the right direction. >> we really don't know as humans what the end game is. i mean, i see it as a golden opportunity for humankind that

received three coats to keep them warm in the coming months. even today, i mean, it's so chilly. it's an initiative by nonprofit operation warm, which manufactures high quality coats and shoes for children in need. principal john stangle says this comes just in time. many of his students have been feeling the chill as these temperatures are dropping. >> i know we're going to bring a lot of smiles on students faces today as they get a free coat. a lot of our students, they come from families that that don't have the resources that that one would hope for. and so i know these coats are going to be well received and really make a difference in their lives. >> kaiser permanente northern california donated more than $21,000 to pay for the coats and kaiser volunteers help students find the perfect fit. >> that is great. >> it is. timing is perfect. timing is perfect. >> they will need those coats.

>> yes. meteorologist sandhya patel is here with how chilly it is outside. sandhya. >> yeah. it is going to get really cold ama and dan tomorrow morning. it is nice that they have those coats. just in time for the chill. we're going to be seeing those temperatures dropping as low as the upper 20s. take a look at a live picture right now. part of the reason is the skies have cleared out. as you can see from our sky star camera. this is from fisherman's wharf. on top of that skystar wheel and the view is just one of a kind. amazing, as you can see here. all right, let's take a look back as to what happened earlier in the da. today. we did have some showers earlier this morning. just kind of skirting the coastline. and believe it or not, i know it sounds a little crazy, but it's not the big sur mountains actually picked up a little bit of snow shower activity mixing in with the rain. right now all is quiet here locally in the mountains. the snow showers continue in the sierra, although it is winding down. the winter weather advisory is still up until 10 p.m. tonight. up to two more inches about 5500ft. as we

sun, occasional high clouds. and then here comes another system on sunday. it's a light level one on our storm impact scale. scattered showers, slippery roads, king tides and minor flooding will continue as we go. hour by hour, 1130 in the morning. there will be some damp spots as we head into 1:00 in the afternoon. scattered showers, very scattered in nature even at 3 p.m. this continues at 7 p.m. and then after that, late sunday night, this system pretty much winds down your rainfall totals anywhere from a couple of hundredths in places like san jose to about 11 hundredths in santa rosa. accuweather seven day forecast does show you that freezing cold start tomorrow morning. we are looking at a mainly sunny afternoon, scattered showers level one sunday. the chill continues on monday with below average high temperatures. a cold morning not as cold as tomorrow morning and then we're going to go warmer midweek 60s coming up near 70 by thursday. but chances of showers in the north bay wednesday and thursday. and then rain is
