the san mateo county sheriff's office after a scathing report. people are now starting to quit their jobs. good evening. i'm ama daetz and i'm dan ashley. >> thanks for joining us. the scandal engulfing the san mateo county sheriff's office is expanding tonight. >> since the county's board of supervisors unanimously called for sheriff christina corbett to

stand down, several members of the department have resigned. >> abc seven news reporter tim johns has more. >> following a tumultuous week for the san mateo county sheriff's office. abc seven news can confirm several high ranking employees have now left the department. that includes acting assistant sheriff matthew fox as well as an unnamed captain. >> we're actually very concerned about morale in the sheriff's department. >> the edits come after a scathing report released tuesday. that report, which was done by an independent investigator, found that sheriff christina corpus abused her power, had an inappropriate personal relationship with her chief of staff, and used racist and homophobic slurs, all accusations the sheriff denies. on wednesday, the county's board of supervisors voted unanimously for the sheriff to step down. >> the matter has been referred to the district attorney's office. it's in the process of being referred to the attorney general's office. i have every it's being referred to the civil grand jury. >> the calls for corpus to resign were echoed by haines puschendorf, a former employee and previous head of the sheriff's department's union. he

says the department has been plagued by scandal for years. >> we were hoping that she was going to make a change, and in fact, she was just as bad as the past history had always been. >> puschendorf says he still talks with many people who work at the sheriff's office. he tells me he believes the report is an accurate depiction of the department. >> with the way that everything has been crumbling and falling around her. i would expect the best thing would be to step out of the way and hopefully they can get at least a couple of more people in to help organize. they can restructure. >> but corpus has vowed not to step down, citing her being elected by the voters of san mateo county. policing expert in san jose state university professor greg woods says if she stays on, he wouldn't be surprised to see more deputies leave the department. >> those individuals who put their professional reputations on the line are concluding that perhaps they don't wish to no longer associate with that particular agency. >> while the scandal continues to unfold, many have raised questions about what it could mean for san mateo county residents and the communities that rely on the sheriff's

office. in half moon bay, city manager matthew chidester says he doesn't anticipate it having an impact on public safety. >> the men and women of the sheriff's office will be committed to continuing to provide services to the coast and keeping our residents safe. >> while the county can't fire the sheriff, the board of supervisors is looking into ways to have her removed in san mateo county. tim johns abc seven news. >> in san francisco, a dog was shot and killed by police responding to an attack. it started near the parking lot of the safeway in the fillmore district. then, responding officers witnessed another attack, which is when shots were fired. another dog was shot minutes later at kimball playground, just a couple of blocks away. abc seven news reporter tara campbell spoke to officers about what happened. >> a fatal shooting in the safeway parking lot in the fillmore district. san francisco police called to the scene just before 11:00 friday morning, responding to reports of three large dogs attacking a person walking a smaller dog. when officers got to the area, they

saw the dogs attacking a different person. >> officers made contact with one of the dogs and an officer involved discharge occurred. that discharge was a result of a fatal shooting here in this parking lot. >> animal care and control officers corralled a second dog. police then chased after a third dog to the nearby kimball playground, where officers shot again. >> the preliminary investigation at this time, we're able to state that non-lethal methods were used to try to detain and stop these dogs. >> the dog that was detained at the park and the one captured in the parking lot, are both in good condition. >> it was just really scary. it was just really scary. >> animal control officers say the dogs are cane corsos, a breed known for being large, strong and protective. all three were adults weighing approximately 120 pounds each. >> we was really close nearby and we just hurried up and just ran around the corner before we heard the extra stuff, but we did see the dogs running rapidly

in the parking lot. >> she got mauled by a dog in that same parking lot. >> darrell daniels says he was bitten by a dog in a different attack here two years ago, and lost a toe. >> what i would like to see is it to be against the law for people to have dogs without muzzles when they come outside? >> the dogs involved in friday's attack appeared to have been living in this van, but police say it's too early to confirm. >> we're working with animal care and control to determine the contacts that they've had, as that is part of our investigation and animal care and control is also conducting their own independent investigation. >> the smaller dog that was first attacked friday morning was taken to the vet. there is no information on how that dog is doing. the person police saw being bitten suffered an arm injury and was taken to the hospital. they are recovering. tara campbell abc seven news. >> a vigil is planned for tomorrow in bodega bay for the five people who died when their boat capsized a couple weeks ago, while crabbing. a 13 year old boy from san jose is the only one who survived. he told

abc seven news last week. it was cold and windy at the time and he climbed into a cooler to survive. there's a gofundme set up to help the impacted families. you can find the link on our website abc seven news.com. >> there is a freeze warning around the bay area tonight, mostly in the north bay with dangerous drops in temperatures. homeless advocates are warning those living outside to be ready and to be braced for the cold. a team of crisis intervention workers spent the day on the streets of petaluma, making sure that unhoused people, no cold weather is coming. the safe team from petaluma people services center is making contact with anyone who needs help or need something warm to wear. >> there's a couple people who are new in town, and, you know, at first they're a little hesitant. they're like, oh, what do you leave me alone, you know? and we're like, hey, like, we just want to offer you a water, a snack, a warm coat. and that's kind of how we start the conversation. >> the mary isaac center in petaluma is offering an overnight warming center this weekend to help protect unhoused

people from serious conditions like hypothermia. it's no joke. >> all parts of the bay area are definitely in for a chilly start to the weekend, and that's not all. we could also see some rain. >> meteorologist sandhya patel is here with a closer look at what we can expect this weekend. sandhya. >> yeah, dan, it's the chill and the showers, so let's take a look at the chill. right now it is down to 41 already in livermore, 44 in concord, 46 fremont. take a look at the north bay. 41 in napa, 45 in santa rosa. freeze warning going up for the north bay interior valleys, 12 a.m. to 8 a.m. tomorrow. temperatures as low as 29 degrees. make sure you protect your pets, pipes, and plants as this could do some damage. so looking at tomorrow's cold conditions, down to 31 in santa rosa. these are some of the coldest spots. livermore 35, san jose 3935. in fairfield and 38 degrees in palo alto. level one system is coming our way, and that's not due in until sunday. so timing this out for

you. you will notice a few showers showing up around noontime. they're really scattered at 5 p.m. not everyone is going to see the wet weather. we're certainly dealing with the surf though. right now in santa cruz, the surf's up high surf advisory remains in effect until 11 a.m. tomorrow. 12 to 18 foot breakers will bring the risk of dangerous conditions if you're swimming or surfing, so watch out and the king tides continue. coastal flood advisory until 4 p.m. tomorrow. the king tide tomorrow morning is seven feet at 1043, so watch out for some flooding if you're going to be out and about walking. i'll be back with a full look at the forecast, which does include some more changes. next week coming up. >> all right. thank you sandhya. we'll check back. accusations of anti-semitism have led to a lawsuit against a local school district on the peninsula. the suit was filed on behalf of several jewish students at woodside high school in redwood city and menlo-atherton in san mateo. they say the sequoia unified high school district failed to protect them from anti-jewish hostilities. sam

cassell's daughter, is a student at woodside. he says he's filed complaints with school staff and administrators about numerous incidents, but nothing was ever done. >> the environment that my children are growing up in is greatly more anti-semitic than when i grew up in the 80s. and that is that's not the that's not the path that america, you know, should be going. >> his attorney says the incidents have gotten worse since hamas's invasion of israel. we reached out to the superintendent at sequoia union school district for comment, but we have not heard back. >> racist text messages have now targeted people in 25 states across the country. today, the fbi provided an update to its investigation into these disturbing messages that came to light earlier this month. as we reported, the texts come from unknown numbers, and they're really nasty and ugly messages. the fbi says black people are targeted, but victims now include members of the hispanic and lgbtq plus communities. some san francisco unified students also received these messages. >> to date, we have not received

reports of violence. again, we have not received reports of violence stemming from these offensive text messages, but we encourage you to remain vigilant. >> the fbi is asking anyone who received a racist text message to please come forward and report it to authorities. >> earlier this month, we told you that a beloved community garden is shutting down because of a dispute with san jose's parks department. since 2007, volunteer gardeners with the prusch farm foundation has operated emma's kitchen garden, a one third of an acre plot within emma prusch farm park. the organization must vacate the park by monday. volunteers say they have no choice but to comply for now, the farm park foundation will carry on. >> we will continue. we may lose this battle, but the war is not over. >> the city said it tried to come to an agreement about fundraising operations, but it ultimately could not. so it ended the partnership. the foundation believes this is

livermore, down three in san jose. four degrees cooler in napa and speaking of tomorrow morning, our coldest spots, 31 in santa rosa, 29 at lakeport, down to 33. napa, 35 livermore, 39 in san jose and 40 for san francisco and oakland. looking at a live view right now, the city by the bay just sparkling. i mean, you could even see the stars. that's how clear it is. tomorrow we are expecting some high clouds to spill over this ridge of high pressure, but it is going to be dry with high in control. sunday's system is still developing. it will bring us some showers, but not to worry, it's not going to be a washout. live view from san jose. it's a beautiful one. overnight tonight. cold. a freeze warning going up for the north bay tomorrow. we're talking about rough surf, mainly sunny skies, but be careful at the beaches. and then sunday, those spotty light showers coming into the picture. so tomorrow afternoon, numbers will range from the upper 50s coast side to the mid 60s. inland, you'll see a lot of sun in the afternoon and occasional high clouds. i hear that cal's playing

syracuse tomorrow at noon. i would take the extra layer. it is going to be dry for that game. for the 40 niners game, it's going to be a different story. 30s and 40s for your sunday morning. so it's still going to be chilly. not quite as cold as tomorrow morning as we check out our storm impact scale for sunday. it is a level one. scattered showers, slippery roadways, king tides will continue with the minor flooding. now we're going to talk about sunday's forecast. as i mentioned, it's not going to be a washout, but 11 a.m. you're noticing a couple of showers popping up here going into 2 p.m, scattered spotty light showers is what i'd call it. 5 p.m. the same thing is happening. and then at 9 p.m, we see a line of showers crossing the east bay and the south bay. so if you're going to the 40 niners game on sunday, i would pack a poncho just to be on the safe side. rainfall totals are not going to be much, a couple hundredths of an inch to about 11 hundredths. half moon bay 14 hundredths in ukiah. here's a look at the accuweather seven day forecast. and it's a winter like chill. tomorrow morning
