hi, spence. hey, dion. >> we'll start with the chill. it's really chilly out there in some spots. here's a look at current temperature readings down in the upper 30s already. and we're just approaching midnight. so it's going to get much chillier in many locations. here comes that level one storm. as you can see on the satellite radar composite image. so let's take a look at our exclusive abc seven storm impact scale. this is a light level one storm. tomorrow it will bring us scattered showers producing slippery roadways. and there may be some minor flooding in low lying areas because of king tides tomorrow. so here's the forecast animation starting at midnight. notice the clouds will start to move in after midnight. the skies are pretty clear right now. by 11:00 tomorrow morning, we'll see the first wave of showers pushing into the north bay, and during the midday hours we'll see the showers expanding to other parts of the north bay and pushing southward and eastward down toward the golden gate. by afternoon and early evening, we'll see spotty showers hitting the rest of the bay area, but they'll taper off quickly late tomorrow night into early monday morning, leaving only trace amount well, more than just trace amounts. a couple of hundredths of an inch of

rainfall for most locations. but there's more rain to come later in the week, and i'll have the complete accuweather seven day forecast a little bit later. dion. all right, we'll talk about it soon. >> spencer. thanks. and be e to stay with abc seven news for updated information. as the conditions change over the next few days, you can track the cold temperatures and the rain with the very same live doppler seven used by spencer and the rest of our weather team. it's all available at abc seven news.com/weather. former olympic gymnast coach bela karolyi has died. karolyi stepped away from the limelight after allegations of abuse of coaching rocked the gymnastics world. notably, he led nadia comaneci and mary lou retton to gold medals during his career. his cause of death hasn't been revealed, but he had been in poor health in the past few years. karolyi was 82 years old. tonight, a vigil was held to pray for a father who went fishing and never came home. he was one of six people thrown overboard when a boat capsized during a crabbing trip in bodega

bay. two weeks ago. only onedega person survived. a 13 year old boy and abc seven news reporter, anser hassan was with the family tonight. >> saranam. gacchami. >> it was a boating trip that became a family tradition. on saturday, family and friends gathered to mourn those who didn't make it home. >> the monks chanting was, you know, just more of a prayer, you know, that he would hear. you know, that his soul will rest in peace, and you know that he'll find his way back to bodega bay. >> the vigil was to remember brother prasong. he was one of six people who went overboard when their boat capsized two weeks ago in bad weather. his body hasn't been found. >> if his soul is trapped here wandering in the ocean somewhere that i didn't want. that you know, in my mind or in my heart. i wanted to find some closure and that he would find some peace and comfort so he can go

on to the to the next journey of his life. >> sung's mother, wife and children took part in the buddhist ceremony. the family of three of the other victims were invited but did not participate. >> he's a really good role model to the family and to others that he meets. >> jonathan chang dong's nephew, spoke at the vigil. he says the community support has been important and impactful, especially since prasong was the family's sole provider. >> i just wanted like like i said, give my appreciation to the people who came out here and also appreciation to those who also donated to, you know, support the families. the family here through through the loss. >> two of the five bodies have been found. 13 year old gelati pasang son was the only survivor. he made it to shore hours later by clinging on to a cooler. when you were praying today was there a special message that you had for your dad that i'll be missing him? >> and he's. his spirit lives in my body. >> in bodega bay, anser hassan abc seven news. >> family members and friends

are remembering a woman who died while in custody at the san francisco county jail. they held a candlelight vigil outside the jail this evening to honor 22 year old amonte hadley. she was found dead in her cell back in september. hadley had been an inmate at the jail for two years, awaiting trial for robbery, and now grieving relatives say they're awaiting answers about what led to her death. >> we're trying to pick up the pieces, but there's no pieces to pick up, you know, because we don't know what's going on. and it's heart wrenching. it's heartbreaking. you know, we're missing a part of our family. inmates. >> family members wanted hadley moved from the jail to a mental health diversion program. but san francisco district attorney brooke jenkins opposed that change. the da said hadley was held in jail because of a safety risk. an explosive fire at a homeless encampment near 101 in san francisco kept firefighters busy today. that fire started at about noontime near the 101 south on ramp at south van ness.

fire investigators responded to calls about a burning tent, and by the time they arrived, those flames had quickly spread. >> this fire did jump the fence that you see behind me and extend it to several stored vehicles that are behind this fence. we were able to keep the fire from damaging any of the structures or buildings that are behind us. >> that fire caused propane tanks inside the encampment to explode. no injuries were reported. happening tonight. a complete freeway shutdown in san francisco that will last through the rest of your weekend. you're taking a live look at drivers in the city right now. caltrans is making emergency barrier repairs to railing along 101 and i-80. now take a look. this is a map of what exactly will close. this is the westbound i-80 ramp to northbound 101, and this will close to traffic at midnight and stay closed for 24 hours. also closed the on ramp at seventh and harrison to southbound 101.

here's a look at that ramp from google street view. and on this final full closure for this project, which has been going on since september. caltrans will still have some partial lane closures, but that work should be done by december. well, moving to on election news and what supporters called a victory rally today for san francisco's prop k, which permanently closes part of the upper great highway to cars. the votes were 55% in favor, 45% against, but the opponents aren't done fighting and now they have a new target. abc seven news reporter tara campbell explains the sights and sounds of celebration on san francisco's great highway. >> today we're having a celebration for prop k for everyone who's volunteered, and anyone's just excited about the park. >> voters passing the controversial ballot measure after months of battling between yes on k and no on k, camp's a joyous occasion because finally,

ocean beach park is a reality as part of a city pilot project, the two mile stretch of road is already closed to vehicles on weekends and holidays. the permanent closure, widely seen as inevitable as coastal erosion continues and tensions continued. running high saturday noon k supporters still wanting their voices heard, saying the closure is inconvenient and sends too much traffic onto neighborhood streets. >> the majority of those of us living on the west side of the city were against it. i just felt this is unfair and rumblings of a recall. >> people pointing at district four supervisor joanne gaudio. >> if a supervisor cannot represent the voice and his district, it's time for him to you know, it's time for him to go. >> i was deeply disappointed that the he support the closure of the great highway. >> i am proud to serve district four. there is too much

divisiveness in san francisco. recalling an elected official on one single issue is not helping to bring our city together and move it forward and moving it forward is exactly what's happening. >> the highway now, in the hands of the rec and parks department, rec and park will go to the coastal commission. >> they'll get a permit, and then they will work with sfmta to close the road and do some traffic mitigation efforts. this land is your land. >> and as far as when the permanent closure will happen, the supervisor says it could be early next year. tara campbell, abc seven news. >> another different project will transform the area around the great highway where just a few days ago, california coastal commission unanimously approved a plan to build a giant seawall. now, this project is south of sloat boulevard, meaning it's south of the section affected by prop k. as you see on your screen, it's a $175 million project, where in addition to the seawall, there would also be a seaside trail parking lot

and other features. that project would also protect a wastewater treatment plant and sewage tunnel. public utility leaders say the project is needed to prevent the aging infrastructure from breaking and spilling sewage onto the beach. there. the first u.s. case of a newly identified strain of mpox has been diagnosed in san mateo county. that person has not been identified, but the cdc says they recently returned to california after traveling to eastern africa, where the new strain has affected several countries. the patient was seen by doctors in san mateo county and is now recovering at home, health officials say there is no evidence the virus is spreading among people in california or elsewhere in the country, and the risk to the public is low. a vaccine is available to help protect against mpox. well, much more to come tonight on abc seven news at 11. president trump's cabinet takes shape. the new nominee, named today. plus nature and betty white. they're just some of the new designs

happened last night at dallas love field on a flight that was headed to indianapolis. now, the good news no one was hurt. that plane, though, went back to the gate and was taken out of service. it's still not clear where the bullet came from or if that plane was targeted. now, you may remember earlier this week, the faa temporarily halted all u.s. flights to haiti after two planes were hit by gunfire. a rally in san francisco today marked the fifth anniversary of the iran uprising. regime change in iran. >> the people of iran. >> it was one of three

gatherings like it across the country. the others happened in santa monica and washington, d.c. organizers say it was held to continue their calls for justice, human rights and democracy in iran. that event also remembered peaceful protesters killed by the regime during demonstrations in 2019. well, check this out. so-called kayak activists paddled to and coal usage coast to coast. the group set out from the richmond marina to the bay, and this was an event in solidarity with a similar one happening in newcastle, australia. they managed to keep their boats together, all while holding up large signs advocating for cleaner water, soil, air and a fossil fuel free future. president elect donald trump today named his nominee to lead the department of energy chris wright. he's the ceo of an energy company whose previous comments are at odds with the agency's own website. abc news reporter johny fernandez takes a closer look.

>> president elect donald trump continues to fill positions in his second administration, announcing chris wright as his nominee to lead the department of energy. wright, the chief executive of liberty energy, the world's second largest fracking services company, is one of the most outspoken critics of efforts to combat climate change. posting this video on linkedin last year, there is no climate crisis, and we're not in the midst of an energy transition either. but 99% of climate scientists agree that humans are causing global warming and climate change. the department of energy's own website states. a clean energy revolution is taking place across america, underscored by the steady expansion of the u.s. renewable energy sector. the president elect has also announced a controversial choice for attorney general, former congressman matt gaetz. a bipartisan house committee has been investigating gaetz for allegations of sexual misconduct and illicit drug use. sources tell abc news a woman testified he had sex with her when she was only 17, something gaetz denied.

in a statement, gaetz said these allegations are invented and would constitute false testimony to congress. sources tell abc news the committee was preparing to vote on releasg that report, but then gaetz resigned from congress after being nominated by trump, effectively ending the investigation. now, a growing number of republican senators who will have to vote on whether to confirm gaetz say they want to see that report. >> i think there should not be any limitation on the senate judiciary committee's investigation, including whatever the house ethics committee has generated. >> johny fernandez, abc news, new york. >> you know, spencer, everywhere i went today, i went to the park. people were talking about how cold it felt, like it was winter or something. >> and we have rain on the way, but it's so cold it feels like we should be expecting snow. >> oh yeah, let's not think about that yet, right? >> here's a look at live doppler seven and the satellite and radar. you can see that there's a level one storm approaching us, and it's so cold out there. well, it's

not going to snow here, but rain is coming our way. despite the dropping temperatures right now, which would make us sort of expect snow. the winds are very calm right now, so that's good news. it's not going to be a big turbulent, windy storm. storm. wind speeds right now are under nine miles per hour across the bay area, but it is getting quite chilly. you can see on the 24 hour temperature change. it is several degrees cooler right now than it was at this time last night. seven degrees cooler in novato and half moon bay, 12 degrees cooler over in fairfield. so let's take a look at current temperature readings as we look out over san francisco from sutro tower 49 right now in san francisco, mid to upper 40s at oakland, hayward, san jose, 41 at redwood city and 39 at half moon bay. now looking out over the bay from mount tam. colder readings 39. right now in santa rosa 37. petaluma. napa 3936 in fairfield and low to mid 40s at concord and livermore. and we'll move along as we gaze at the bay bridge from our emeryville camera. chect our weather headlines. our forecast headlines tomorrow

scattered showers with some breaks of sun here and there. middle of the week will be unsettled with a mix of sun and clouds and maybe a sprinkle or two, but no significant rainfall expected in the middle of the week. however, at the end of the upcoming week, we expect warmer weather, but next rain storm will arrive at the end of the week as well. but tomorrow's storm is a weak or light i should say. level one storm on the exclusive abc seven storm impact scale, it will bring scattered showers, it will produce slippery roadways, and we have king tides right now for the next couple of days. higher than normal high tides, which could produce some minor flooding in low lying areas right around the bay shoreline. so bear that in mind as we have rainfall on top of that. here's the forecast animation starting at midnight tonight. skies are clear at the moment, but clouds will quickly increase during the overnight hours, and the first batch of rainfall or showers will probably arrive in the north bay around 11 a.m. tomorrow. then during the next few hours, we'll see that shower activity expanding across the north bay and then southward down to the golden gate and on to the

peninsula. and by early evening tomorrow, we'll see the system weakening. but there will be scattered showers moving down to the south bay, over in the east bay, and some of it pushing out into the sierra, where it will turn into snow. but then after the after about 11:00 tomorrow night, we'll see skies clearing going into monday. now back to the coastal flood advisory until 4 p.m. monday. this is in effect because of the king tides, the highest tides tomorrow at the golden gate, about 1125 11:26 a.m, up to nearly seven feet. so there could be some flooding in low lying areas like parking lots and that sort of thing. overnight, low temperatures, mainly in the upper 30s to low 40s. highs tomorrow up to about 60, 61, 62 degrees. and here's the accuweather seven day forecast. so notice for much of next week monday tuesday wednesday mix a mix of clouds and sun. maybe a threat of a sprinkle here or there. on thursday it starts to get warmer. and then on friday under that warmer pattern, we'll get some rain coming in late friday into saturday. that

in east palo alto. that event brought out families and community to experience a unique tech to real life crossover. >> it's really important opportunity for youth in this city to be able to shape how it looks and feels, because they are the ones who are going to inherit it in the future when they live here as adults. and so now they get from a very young age to see the city evolve around artwork that they have created themselves. >> so nice. about 140 students were involved in creating the art project, which is on electrical boxes around the

city. some made clay sculptures for claymation scenes, while others made the base art and filmed musicians provided the tunes. visitors can see it all come to life by scanning a qr code on their phone. well, the holiday spirit is returning to san francisco's union square. mayor london breed announced winter wonderland, a series of events and attractions that last drew last year. more than 1.5 million visitors. the big christmas tree at union square is all lit up as you can see, and the ice rink is open. the spca holiday windows with adoptable dogs and cats are also on display at macy's. now taking a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza where happening now, caltrans is putting up the wreath for the holidays. it will be visible to westbound drivers above the yerba buena tunnel. there are some partial lane closures overnight, so crews can safely install it. that wreath should be up by 730 tomorrow morning. a huge day of college

the asia-pacific economic cooperation leaders. all 21 of them were brown alpaca wool scarves. as it is customary to don a traditional outfit for the group photo. now, this year, apec was held in lima, peru. last year of course, san francisco hosted the event, the largest convening of world leaders in san francisco in decades. this year is the final apec summit for president biden, who met today with chinese president xi jinping. the last time they met was in woodside at filoli gardens. abc news reporter alex presha has a look at biden's final event.

>> president biden is continuing his historic visit to south america, meeting with china's president xi jinping at the apec summit, a gathering of leaders of the asia pacific rim. biden reinforcing america's leading role in the indo-pacific. touting his success in enhancing america's strategic position in the region and reassuring the world of a smooth transition of power. the white house says the two were expected to discuss ai safety, climate change and china's alleged attempted hacking of cell phones during the 2024 presidential election. >> we haven't always agreed, but our conversations have always been candid and always been frank. >> the last time the two met was in november of last year in woodside, california. their sit down today expected to be the last of biden's presidency. on friday, biden met with south korea's president and the prime minister of japan. they discussed the growing threat of north korea and its alliance with russia. the trio, considering military signs of force, along with possible sanctions. >> i truly believe cooperation of our countries will be the foundation to peace and

stability in the indo-pacific for many years to come. >> biden did not mention president elect donald trump by name, but there's an understanding u.s. foreign policy is about to shift, especially with trump's threat of increased tariffs. tomorrow, biden visits brazil's amazon region, a first for a u.s. president to discuss climate change. he'll end his trip in rio de janeiro at the g20 summit. alex presha abc news, lima, peru. >> a long awaited and controversial costco is set to open its doors in pleasanton. the store near the stoneridge shopping center at the five 8680 interchange, will open the day before thanksgiving. that is one of the busiest days of the year for grocery stores. construction of the store was held up by legal challenges from local residents, who said it would negatively impact air quality and traffic. city leaders, though, argue the store will provide a big boost to local sales tax revenue. now, there have been debates over opening costco in west san jose with hundreds of neighbors

writing to the city council against it. the city council approved the plans three weeks ago, and in the north bay, napa opened its first costco last month. a day of giving across the bay area this weekend. scouts are teaming up with local food banks for the annual scouting for food collection. drive to help families this holiday season, and the need is greater than ever. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard takes a look from the north bay. >> a steady stream of food donations rolling in outside the san francisco marin food bank warehouse in san rafael. local scouts are doing the heavy lifting and collecting. >> well, it's always really like moving to see. and i think that every year i've done this, it just means a little bit more, especially around the holiday season. you see, like, i mean, the sheer amount of food that we have today and it's just like, wow, like to think about all the people that's going to help. >> with. less than two weeks before thanksgiving, the scouting for food annual collection drive is more important than ever this holiday

season, with 1 in 5 californians at risk of food insecurity. >> the needs a little bit greater now, even post pandemic. this is a critical time of year for donations going into the holidays. like you said, everybody's in need of some additional support. >> roman says the food bank is serving more than 50,000 households across san francisco and marin weekly. last week, scouts left door hangers on homes asking for nonperishable food items. those donations were picked up on saturday. >> it's a great chance for them to kind of learn a little bit more about how people have food insecurity today, even despite our affluent uh- county last year. >> believe it or not, these scouts collected more thane 28,000 pounds of food. the effort happening all across the bay area and in sonoma county. >> they struggle to get food. so it is it's good to help people. >> local girl scouts and nearly 200 volunteers are helping at the redwood empire food bank in santa rosa, collecting and sorting food donations. on this day of giving the food bank,

they're also says the need for food assistance is increasing. >> and despite the scale of our operations, the demand for our services continues to grow at a rate that is outpacing the donations coming in to support us. >> scouts and a generous community doing their part to lend a hand. this holiday in the north bay, cornell, bernard. abc seven news. >> another bart station is about to get new faregates. work will begin this week at the warm springs south fremont station, where crews are currently working on the montgomery and powell street stations in san francisco. now, abc seven news was there when the first new fare gates were installed at west oakland almost a year ago last december. bart says by february of next year, it will have upgraded more than half of its 50 stations with the new gates, which are supposed to cut down on fare evasion and improve safety. now, here's a look at the progress made so far. ten stations are already completed,

they? a simple love stamp featuring iconic art by keith haring musician allen toussaint. is that how i say two cent will be honored in the black heritage series and yes, late actress betty white is getting her own stamp. there will also be a new lunar new year stamp for the year of the snake and of course, the classic american flag. but it will have a new look next year. the u.s. postal service is raising the prices of shipping services. usps says that in order to keep up with market conditions, it has decided to raise prices by almost 3% for priority mail service, 4% for usps ground advantage and 9% for parcel select. the price of a first class stamp won't change. the changes will go into effect on january 19th. the postal service announced earlier this week that it had a net loss of $9.5 billion. that is, with a b for the past fiscal year. it is at risk of needing a government bailout to avoid financial

collapse. the oldest living hippopotamus at an accredited u.s. zoo has died. patti was 55 years old, a veterinarian at the milwaukee county zoo said patti appeared lethargic last week, and her health declined after a series of tests, so she was humanely euthanized on sunday. frogs that were once at the brink of extinction at yosemite national park are making a major comeback. the population of the sierra nevada yellow legged frogs was decimated by a fungal disease. some of the populations were, though, able to recover while also developing a resistance. biologists then took some of those frogs and reintroduced them to a dozen new sites in yosemite. they monitored the frogs over 17 year span and found the population was once again thriving. well, millions of americans in the northeast are under red flag warnings, and severe drought worsens concerns for more wildfires. meanwhile, the southern plains are bracing for

a heavy rainfall tomorrow. reporter jen sullivan is tracking the extreme weather sweeping the country. >> reporter firefighters in greenwood lake, new york, just about an hour northwest of new york city, are battling wildfires this week. much of the region grappling with severe drought further fueling conditions for fires like this and forcing some residents out of their homes. >> we realized suddenly it was like 100 yards away from these houses, right here. >> more than 5000 acres have burned since the fires broke out along the new york new jersey border last friday. some 300 firefighters from multiple agencies, some as far as montana, helping battle the flames. >> very, very scary. almost surreal. like you know, it's there, but you're like, is this really happening? you know, but, you know, it's your home and you're just so, so scared of what's going to happen. >> while officials say it's nearly 90% contained, firefighters concerned about conditions saturday as winds

picked up. >> we are very concerned about those winds. >> the extreme dry conditions triggering red flag warnings across the northeast from new jersey up to maine saturday. >> our crews will be out there monitoring and working some hose lines, cooling any hotspots and then just making sure there's no additional flare ups along the line. >> as the northeast deals with drought, the southern plains are bracing for severe weather. strong storms sunday night into moy morning could cause isolated tornadoes and damaging winds in western texas, and parts of oklahoma could see up to four inches of rain. in new york, i'm jen sullivan, reporting. >> you know, i almost feel like we need to get used to these very strange weather patterns, because just days ago, we were talking about fires in the new york city area. like, since when do you see that extreme weather is becoming more common? >> the events are of greater duration. so yeah, we've got some things to think about here, but we're fortunate here that we don't have any extreme weather

happening right now. and we had a fairly, fairly mild fire season here. so we have a light level one storm coming into the bay area tomorrow, bringing scattered showers, slippery roads, some minor localized flooding in low lying areas is possible. here's a forecast animation showing the first wave of showers arriving in the north bay in the late morning hours by mid-afternoon. the showers will be spreading to other parts of the bay area, but quickly ending and pushing over to the sierra, where it will snow so we won't get a lot of rain out of this, maybe a couple of hundredths of an inch. the overnight low temperatures will be in the upper 30s to low 40s, so it will be pretty chilly overnight. but we're not getting snow, just rain. tomorrow's highs upper 50s to low 60s. and the accuweather seven day forecast shows a mix of clouds and sun for much of the week. coming up. it will be rather unsettled. it will warm up towards the end of the week, and then we'll get some more rain late friday into next saturday. >> okay, we like seeing those ones on the storm. yes. >> just once. yeah. we don't need the threes and fours. >> spencer. thanks. okay. all right. once again, chris alvarez joins us with another preview of
