a nonprofit in the north bay, launches a new program to help families get ready in case president elect donald trump follows through with his threats of mass deportation and an e coli outbreak linked to carrots grown at a california farm. abc seven news at 5:00 starts now. >> always live abc seven news starts right now. >> now on abc seven. cliffside crisis the dramatic scene as rescuers are called in to help a man stuck in a precarious position on a cliff above baker beach. thanks for joining us. i'm dion lim. we'll get to that story in just a moment. but first. more showers fell in parts of the bay area, and an atmospheric river may be cog this week. spencer christian is standing by and, spencer, things really changed in the last few hours. >> changing rather significantly. dion. here's a look at the satellite and radar composite image. you can see our light level one storm that's bringing us some light scattered showers today. that's winding down right now. but notice that greater

concentration of clouds and moisture out on the left side of your screen. that's where the atmospheric river contains a lot more rainfall. but just a quick look at our current storm. first of all, for tonight, level one storm bringing scattered showers, breezy conditions this evening. rainfall totals just a couple of hundredths of an inch. now let's take a look at our long term forecast animation starting monday evening. going into late tuesday night and early wednesday morning, we'll see this next wave of more concentrated rainfall moving through the bay area for wednesday and into thursday. that's going to be mainly a north bay event, although other portions of the bay area will get some rain out of that system. but the heavier concentration rain initially will be in the north bay, but by thursday and friday and saturday we'll see wave after wave of heavier rain, more widespread rain coming into the bay area, hitting more than just the north bay. and as we look at projected rainfall totals as of oh 11 p.m. on saturday, this coming saturday, we may see between 5 and 7in of rain in parts of the north bay for

that four five day period, over an inch over 3.25in here in san francisco, down in the south bay, up to 3.6in of rain may fall in san jose from that period of rainfall, as that atmospheric river works its way through. so i'll give you a closer look at all the details in the accuweather seven day forecast. a little bit later dion. >> all right. lots more to talk about. spencer. thanks. a dramatic scene above baker beach today as a helicopters called in to help a hiker in trouble. take a look. the man was stuck on the side of a cliff just yelling for help. san francisco fire and california highway patrol's air operations pulled him to safety using a hoist system on a chp helicopter. a spokesperson for the fire department said before getting stuck, that man was out hiking and ventured off the marked trail. >> this gentleman said that the rock slipped out from under him, so he fell a certain amount. so that was the problem with him. he was not able to get back up. so we do tell people to stay away from the areas that are not

marked trails. >> the victim was safely airlifted back to the parking lot where he was examined by paramedics. they determined he did not need any medical assistance. to the north bay no, where there is fear and concern in the immigrant community over promises made by president elect donald trump. he's vowing to conduct mass deportations of undocumented individuals after taking office. this weekend. a local nonprofit is launching a new program to help families prepare with advice and information. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard has more now from sonoma county. >> noon mass at saint vincent de paul church in petaluma. for some families, the first stop after sunday services was this free presentation about knowing your rights aun cuando las personas. catholic charities of santa rosa, holding a series of presentations in spanish and english to educate the immigrant community about what the next donald trump presidency could mean. trump has made this

promise. >> on day one, i will launch the largest deportation program in american history. can he get the criminals out? >> advocates say many people are confused and stressed. >> the first thing that we tell them is to be calm. >> teresa marcelino says catholic charities immigration services has been overwhelmed with calls and questions about possible deportations. >> we are preparing them and telling them the likelihood of them having an encounter with isis is pretty low, but we do want to empower them with their rights so that they are prepared in case of an encounter with ice. >> those attending are offered these cards about what to do and say if detained by federal agents. this woman says she's got concerns about her parents immigration status and is thankful for the advice. >> i think it's something very helpful for us hispanics because it really gives us like a safe spot to come and talk and see what the possibilities are to going into our their hometown

with legal status. >> we have also seen an increase in legal permanent residents applying for citizenship, so we do help with that process. >> it's a nervous time for many families. they say the future is unclear. >> i feel like that scares a lot of children because they think they're going to lose their parents. >> catholic charities is planning seven more presentations across sonoma county between now and the end of the year to provide the immigrant community with as much information as possible going forward. in petaluma, cornell, bernard. abc seven news. >> happening tomorrow. another bay area county is bringing back its mask mandate thanks to rising covid and flu cases. health care workers in sonoma county will have to mask up in patient care areas, regardless of their vaccination status. that mandate will last through april 30th. patient care areas, including hospitals, clinics, skilled nursing facilities and any other medical environment. sonoma county joined several other bay area counties that have already brought back those mandates. evacuation and shelter

in place orders have been lifted in cupertino following a gas leak and water line break. hazmat teams were called out this morning to the 7800 block of creek line drive, where p-g-and-e's says two inch gas lines were impacted. people were told to stay inside with windows and doors shut. fire officials say the gas line was secured by 1115 and everyone is now safe to move about the neighborhood. the rio vista bridge on highway 12 will be back open for tomorrow's morning commute, after it was closed this weekend for ongoing repairs. the bridge is just east of rio vista in solano county. that closure was one of several planned for the bridge to allow crews to upgrade the pavement, replace bridge rails and improve overall quality. the next bridge closure is scheduled for the weekend of december 13th. another bart station is about to get new faregates. work begins this week at the warm springs south fremont station, where crews are currently working on

the montgomery and powell street stations in san francisco. abc seven was there when the first new fare gates were installed at west oakland, almost a year ago, last december. bart says by february of next year, it will have upgraded more than half of its 50 stations with the new gates, they're supposed to cut down on fare evasion and improve safety. now here's a look at the progress made so far. ten stations are already completed. all stations should have the new gates by the end of next year. coming up next, the latest developments in the war in ukraine. president biden announces the lifting of restrictions that russia says would cross a red line. it all comes hours after putin launched a major attack. and we'll have the latest. plus, the division rivalry heats up as the niners and seahawks battle for a much needed victory in the tightly bunched nfc west. chris joins us with all the highlights and postgame reaction a little later in sports. >> hi, i'm spencer christian. our current showers are winding down. we can expect some dry

in months. missiles and drones targeting power plants and energy infrastructure across the country. president volodymyr zelensky says more than 200 were fired into the country, with ukrainian air defenses downing more than 140 of them. strikes and explosions reported across kyiv, odesa, zaporizhzhia and western ukraine. people forced to flee into metro stations and shelters. the power grid in kyiv and at least one other region shut down in mykolaiv, near the black sea. homes in the area reduced to rubble. crews working on damaged power lines as freezing temperatures grip the country. the strike signaling russia's threat to leave millions without power. this, as two u.s. officials confirmed to abc news that president biden has authorized ukraine to use u.s. supplied long range missiles inside russia, something the president had specifically prohibited until now. ukrainian president zelenskyy says he believes the end of the war will be closer

after president elect trump's inauguration, saying the war will end. but there is no exact date, certainly with the policy of this team that is about to lead the white house, the war will end faster. but zelenskyy also warns ukraine must be kept in a strong position, adding the u.s. cannot expect them to just sit and listen. chuck sivertsen, abc news, new york. >> a health alert tonight the cdc warning about a deadly e coli outbreak linked to organic carrots. 9 people in 18 states, including california, have gotten sick and one has died. those carrots are sold by grimmway farms in bakersfield. they're distributed under several brand names, some where you'll see on your screen. the cdc says the carrots at the store right now are likely not affected, but you should check your refrigerator. and an update on the e coli outk linked to onions used on mcdonald's quarter pounder hamburgers. the cdc says the investigation remains open, but the risk to the public is low. more than 100 people got sick

halftime at today's salute to service day at levi's stadium. every year, the 40 niners host a special game to honor veterans and active duty servicemen and women. it all kicked off with a massive american flag presentation presentation for the national anthem, and the day held a special meaning for tight end george kittle, who has been nominated for the nfl's salute to service award. well, the king tide has been flooding parks, parking lots and roads in low lying areas this weekend, with some isolated lane closures expected. minor flooding is expected to continue until at about 4 p.m. on monday, when the king tide ends. king tides occur when the sun, earth and moon line up, increasing the gravitational pull on the water and making tides unusually high. it happens a few times each year, and the next one will happen in december. all right, lots of water to talk about in another form. and it's so strange because last night we were just, you know, joking about how nice it will be to have a level one storm and look

how things changed. >> well, that atmospheric river has picked up more energy now, and we're seeing a higher concentration of moisture. and it's taking aim at the bay area. so we're now likely to get several days of rain later in the week. but right now we're just getting light scattered showers from this light level. one storm that we've had moving through the bay area since yesterday. but notice how there's a greater density in the clouds out here. far to the west. that's the well, that's a part of the atmospheric river that contains the rainfall. we're likely to see later in the week. right now, though, things are relatively calm. the winds are light. most locations, especially around the bay and near the coastline, have wind speeds under ten miles per hour. and it's milder right now than at this time yesterday. four degrees, five degrees warmer. in fact, in napa than at this time yesterday. nine degrees warmer in novato. but the warm weather won't last long because it's going to get chilly overnight. right now, as we look out over the bay, we see clouds getting thicker. it's 55 degrees here in san francisco, upper 50s at oakland and hayward, 62 at san jose, and mid to upper 50s from half moon. excuse me, half moon bay to redwood

city at the golden gate bridge. right now we see clouds getting a little bit thicker and lower in the sky. temperature readings up north are in the mid 50s at santa rosa, petaluma, napa, 58 at fairfield and livermore, concord 59 degrees. and as we look across the embarcadero from our rooftop camera, these are our forecast headlines this evening. we'll see a few more scattered showers. they'll become more widely scattered and isolated as we get later into the evening. monday and tuesday. it'll be bright and breezy, sunnier tomorrow than on tuesday, but wednesday through saturday rain will move in. we'll have several consecutive days of rainfall. the heaviest rainfall totals will be up in the north bay. but for our current system, which is now weakening level one storm on the exclusive abc seven storm impact scale tonight, just a few more scattered or isolated showers. it will be a breezy evening. rainfall totals additional totals will be under five hundredths of an inch. so here's the forecast animation. you can see just some light scattered sprinkles moving through the bay area. 11:00 tonight. it will seem like it's almost over, but during the overnight hours we'll see a

few passing showers sliding down along the coastline, giving way to a mainly sunny day tomorrow. and again, rainfall totals just a couple of hundredths of an inch now. overnight lows will be mainly in the low to mid 40s, although some locations farther inland up in the north bay mid to upper 30s will be very chilly in our inland areas. highs tomorrow up to about 60 degrees, maybe 61, in the mildest locations. now here's a long term forecast animation starting tomorrow night. notice by wednesday morning we'll see that first next wave of rain coming through, continuing into thursday with perhaps a little bit of a break. most of the rain, the heaviest rain for that those two days. wednesday thursday will be in the north bay, but then friday and saturday and sunday we'll see rain sweeping through the entire bay area. all parts of the bay area will get wet from those storms later in the week, and rainfall totals will range from about five to nearly seven inches in the wettest areas of the north bay, over three inches here in the city, the east bay and the bay shoreline. the peninsula just under two

inches and it looks like san jose could get 3.6in of rain cumulatively from the four days of rain coming our way. here's the accuweather seven day forecast. right now we're ranking the rain storm activity on each of those days level one. but the cumulative impact of rain day after day, especially if the atmospheric river gets a little bit more energetic, we could see level two by the end of the week. by friday or saturday the groud could be really soaked. it will be. >> it probably will be. all right, let's get to chris now with a preview of sports. hi, chris. >> hi, guys. yeah. coming up in sports from levi's stadium. 40 niners and seahawks battling for playoff positioning. and this was a close game throughout and went right down to the fourth quarter. and it's never good when the other team does the steph curry night night a showdown with the seahawks highlights reaction from levi's.

week six win up in seattle. george, though still doing his pregame routine with the fam. a little selfie there saying hi to his wife claire. as always, seahawks kicked an early field goal. the niners respond. brock purdy out of the shotgun. can't find anybody and he's going to scramble on in. it's a purdy plunge to the pylon. touchdown. ten yard run seven 340 niners. kyle shanahan and kittle they approve of that. but that's all they get in the first half. purdy's pass to chrisn mccaffrey. low tipped up and picked off by seattle. niners just 152 yards in the first half and the seahawks write in. niners territory. but the defense stands up yet. gross-matos back from injury. takes down geno smith. they hold them to a field goal. so that's good news. and it's not a niners seahawks game without a rugby scrum. i mean it was physical in this division battle. no one was kicked out. but a couple of penalties offsetting. seven six at the break. bad news in the third. nick bosa aggravates an oblique and goes out. the seahawks take the lead and the niners offense needs to

respond. jauan jennings was huge in this game. looks like he's short but fights for the first down. third and one just getting every yard. i mean get off of me. seahawks i want a first down and then he gets the payoff. a three yard touchdown. get it to jauan. reward the man. 1713 niners take the lead in the fourth quarter. he had ten catches for 91 yards. and that score. bosa ruled out for the game. so how would the defense respond without him. and he can only watch as seattle drives down the field late in the fourth quarter. things break down and geno smith a path to paydirt. and he's in 13 yard game winner with 12 seconds to go fred warner can't believe it happened again. add insult to injury geno goes with a stiff night. night. niners lose 20 to 17. seattle leapfrogs them for second place in the nfc west. niners are five and five in last place. and a lot more questions than answers at this point. >> yes. no, it's not like us and uh, but that's just what we've shown this year. so i guess
