they are. i think that's by design. >> reporter: questions continue to grow over trump's choice for defense secretary, fox news host pete hegseth. his attorney confirming hegseth paid a woman who accused him of sexual assault in 2017 as part of a settlement agreement, claiming the encounter was consensual. trump was made aware of the incident shortly after he named hegseth to the position and is standing by him. his team saying hegseth has denied any and all accusations and no charges were filed. we look forward to his confirmation. hegseth is also under fire for some tattoos depicting religious symbols and phrases. his fellow service members flagged to his superiors over concerns they are associated with white supremacists. hegseth saying those concerns amount to anti-christian bigotry saying they can target me, i don't give a damn. but this type of target of christians, conservative, and every day americans will stop on day 1 in donald trump's department of defense.

hegseth post not disavowing the supremacists who have adopted the symbolism, though he has in the past. this morning a growing number of republican senators are demanding to see the house ethics report into trump's choice for attorney general. former congressman matt gaetz. >> i believe the senate should have access to that. should it be released to the public or not? i guess that will be part of negotiations. that should be definitely part of our decision make. >> reporter: while the justice department declined to pursue charges the bipartisan committee had been investigating gaetz for allegations of sexual misconduct and illicit drug use. sources tell abc news a woman testified he had sex with her when she was only 17. something gaetz has denied, as well as the drug claim. in a statement, gaetz saying these allegations are invented and would constitution false testimony to congress. this false smear following a three year criminal investigation should be viewed with great skepticism.

the investigation ended when gaetz abruptly resigned from congress, hours after trump tapped him to be his attorney general. at the time, house speaker mike johnson was noncommittal on whether the committee's report should be released. but now -- >> it should not come out. and why? because matt gaetz resigned from congress. he is no longer a member. >> reporter: but in the past the committee has released ethics reports after members have resigned. trump is making it clear he plans to overhaul government agencies tasking billionaire elon musk and vivek ramaswamy to lead a new created department of government efficiency. >> we expect mass reductions in force in areas of the federal government that are bloated. we expect massive cuts of federal contractors and others overbilling the federal government. >> reporter: ramaswamy and musk there by trump's side at the fight. so, too, was his pick for energy secretary, chris wright. one of the nation's top fracking ceo's,

when ukraine believes it can stop repeated attacks if it can fire deeper into russia. skeptics are worrying this is the red line being crossed and what moscow's response is going to be. this morning president biden authorizing ukraine to use long range missiles against russia for the very first time. >> it will allow them to hit deep behind russian lines, to hit supply caches, troop buildup areas. >> reporter: the weapons have a range of nearly 200 miles. the missiles ukraine currently have travel only around 70 miles. >> we want to make sure ukraine is in the best position to protect its interests. >> reporter: a major shift, 10,000 north korean troops in russia, many expected to fight alongside the russians to gain land in the kurz region. president zelenskyy saying the missiles will speak for themselves. without a doubt. this as russia launched one of its largest attacks against ukraine this year unleashing more than 200 drones and missiles across the country

sunday. video circulating online showing the exact moment missiles landed. the russian assault targeting energy infrastructure, causing blackouts in several regions and killing at least seven civilians. and overnight, a devastating russian missile attack striking an apartment building, killing 11 and injuring nearly 90, children among the dead and wounded. russia deliberately targeting ukraine's energy infrastructure as the winter months set in. in odessa, where water supplies have been shut off, long lines forming for emergency supplies, carrying home what they can on foot. well, the kremlin responding just now saying the u.s. is adding fuel to the fire. and escalating tensions. putin already warning this would mean the u.s. and others would be directly involved in the war. it seems likely they will just be used in the border region for now. rebecca? >> rebecca: a monumental decision either way.

ian, thank you. we turn now to the investigation into the latest passenger plane hit by gun fire. this time in dallas. just as southwest was getting ready, a flight from southwest was getting ready to take off. transportation correspondent gio benitez joins us with more. good morning, gio. >> reporter: good morning. yeah, real mystery because we still don't know where that bullet came from. this morning the search is on for a shooter. >> they think that somebody from outside the airport shot a fire at the aircraft. >> reporter: this morning authorities investigating after a southwest plane in dallas was struck by gun fire while preparing for takeoff. all of it unfolding just before 10 p.m. as the crew was taxiing for takeoff. a bullet apparently striking the right side of the aircraft just under the flight deck. >> southwest didn't tell us that, you know, a bullet had hit the plane. they just told us the plane had sustained damage and that plane couldn't be flown. >> reporter: thankfully, no

injuries were reported, and all passengers got off the plane safely. no word on who fired that bullet. and that plane has been taken out of service. meanwhile, southwest gave passengers a voucher for a future flight. george? >> george: okay, gio, thanks. now a demonstration by a neonazi group over the weekend in columbus ohio. the armed group marched carrying flags with swastikas on them. chief justice correspondent pierre thomas has the story. good morning, pierre. >> reporter: george, good morning. the hate was right out in the open, so brazen ohio's governor felt compelled to respond. this morning new surveillance footage of an armed group of men carrying flags emblazened with swastikas marching through the streets of columbus, ohio. the troubling incident happening saturday afternoon. each person dressed head to toe in all black, masks concealing their faces as they shouted racist speech against jews and people of color. ohio's governor writing, there is no place in this state for

hate, bigotry anti-semitism or violence. hate crimes have been on the rise for the past several years according to data from the fbi. the anti-defamation league also notes a stunning increase in acts of anti-semitism with indents doubling last year compared to 2022. overnight african-american community leaders in columbus taking to the same streets in a peaceful counter protest. >> today sends a clear message that this cannot happen in our city, in this state, nor in this nation. we're not going to be moved back. >> reporter: just a week ago in michigan, another group carrying nazi flags outside a theater production of "the diary of anne frank." we are asking both president biden and president-elect trump about the ohio incident and are waiting a response. biden responded denouncing the indent. we're awaiting a response from trump. because there was no violence in columbus and apparently no direct threat of violence, no arrests were made. the first amendment allows for all kinds of free speech,

including speech filled with hate. robin? >> robin: all right, pierre. our thanks to you for your reporting. now the latest on sean diddy combs. prosecutors are accusing combs of trying to contact perspective witnesses and obstruct the case against him. our senior investigative correspondent aaron katersky is here with more on that. good morning to you, aaron. >> reporter: good morning, robin. sean combs going to be asking a judge to release him on bail. prosecutors now say the argument for detention has only gotten stronger. this morning federal prosecutors are accusing sean diddy combs of escalating his attempts to influence the jury pool and subvert his criminal case. almost immediately after arriving at the federal jail in brooklyn, prosecutors say he started using accounts of eight other inmates to call people not on his approved contact list. ♪ prosecutors allege combs frequently instructs family members and attorneys to add other members via three way call

now new developments in the idaho college murders case. defense attorneys are challenging key evidence they say was improperly obtained by police including search warrants and dna. kayna whitworth joins us with the latest. good morning to you, kayna. >> reporter: good morning. these are sweeping challenges that center around the investigative genetic genealogy linked to kohberger to the crime in the first place, as well as his dramatic arrest in the dead of night despite weeks of surveillance where they say he was seen unarmed. this morning new court filings from bryan kohberger's defense team depict a chaotic night where the former ph.d. student was arrested at his parents home in pennsylvania. his lawyers claim during the raid the law enforcement broke the front door, shattered the glass door of the basement and held the entire family at gun point. with his hands tied and surrounded by police at gun point, kohberger made statements to his arresting officer. despite not having his rights read to him. they want those statements

thrown out along with key pieces of evidence the lead defense attorney argued were illegally gathered by law enforcement using his genetic information. authorities linking kohberger to the crime after they found dna that was a statistical match on the button straps of a knife sheath at the crime scene. the four students were found stabbed to death. >> when law enforcement uses that positive match and then says, well, we need to get a search warrant because we have a positive match for bryan kohberger, the dna evidence is tainted and anything that comes from it is fruit from a poisonous tree. >> reporter: the defense, who says kohberger is innocent, claiming without that genetic information, there could have been no request for his phone records which prosecutors also say implicate kohberger. also challenging the way authorities gathered search warrants, especially pertaining to the search of kohberger's car, a white allantra as well as

>> robin: did he say that? >> george: jim gaffgan will be here tomorrow to tell us all about it. very funny and great guy. >> robin: i'm going to ask him about his family. now the inspiring story about houston texans defensive lineman dylan horton. he is set to take the field tonight against the dallas cowboys. this is nearly a year after he was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. will reeve sat down with him and joins us again from arlington, texas. we've been looking forward to this story, will. thank you. good morning. >> reporter: of course, robin. hello again. when we watch football, we can often see the players as something like machines. we can forget or maybe never even know their very human struggles. dylan horton is a remarkable young man. he's an exceptional football player whose football glory, the dreams of football glory were put on pause when the reality of cancer comes crashing through the door. but now he is back and he's got some great perspective. what do you remember about the moment you found out that you were sick?

>> i remember getting the call. trying to understand, you know, everything, all of the information that he was saying. i wanted to make sure my parents were on the call, too. >> reporter: dylan horton was living his dream as a rookie defensive end for houston texans when a call last year changed his life. what were you diagnosed with? >> stage 4 hodgkins lymphoma. >> reporter: what do you remember feeling in that moment? >> i felt a lot of emotions initially. >> reporter: were you afraid? >> i felt like it was a common fear. kind of nervous. i just knew that, you know, god was on my side. he's not gonna bring me to a situation where he doesn't think i'm prepared to handle. >> reporter: stage 4 is the most advanced stage of hodgkins lymphoma, a type of cancer of the lymph system. often starting in the lymph nodes. the 6' 4", 275 pound horton was losing weight, sweating through the night, suffering from fatigue.

were you afraid this nfl career that you worked so long and hard for might be over just as soon as it began? >> i felt like my first goal was just getting back healthy and understanding that i worked hard just to get to the nfl. it will be hard to stay in the nfl regardless of what i was going through. now i'm going through this. >> reporter: this, including chemotherapy treatment through a port every two weeks. horton said his support system was everything. >> my parents came down from frisco. whenever i was getting treatment. my brother, he was in chicago. whenever he could, he came down also. >> reporter: horton's parents also made the five hour drive from frisco to houston to watch their son tell his story to gma. >> they know i love them. i love, y'all. it was a long situation, but i felt like we stuck it out, you know? >> reporter: after six months away from football, horton was able to get back to working out. this fall he returned to the texans roster and is now in remission. can you describe what those

emotions were as you returned to play? >> going out on the field, hearing all the fans cheering, it just gave me goose bumps. >> reporter: how, if at all, did this diagnosis change your perspective? >> i feel like it's easy to get caught up in, like, i'm in the nfl, you know? i'm here. i made it. kind of going through the situation definitely allows you to understand life is bigger than football. >> reporter: i'm just struck by how in the moment you are. >> i feel like thinking about the future is nice. planning for the future is even better. we can't control the future. the best thing is worry about what you can control, your action in the present moment, like right now. >> reporter: we're all rooting for dylan horton. i was talking to his parents when they came down to watch that interview. they said they have a family mantra that they used even before dylan was diagnosed with cancer. it's better than yesterday. that's what the texans will try to do tonight against the dallas cowboys.
