it's not too long. >> i feel like we're throwing a lot of stats and numbers to people, but here's another one. closing games out in the fourth quarter, 40 niners have allowed 29 points in the final two minutes of the second half. that is the second most allowed in the nfl. it's really hard to win games when you're having teams drive on you late in the game and finishing, and it reminds me of steve young mentioned this a few weeks ago, because the red zone problems are obvious for the 40 niners. the solution is not. and steve young said every field goal gets you a little bit closer to losing, no doubt, because you give up four points every time you kick a field goal. >> you trade field goals for touchdowns. you're trying to give that game away. you need the seven points, not the four. >> yeah, more to come on toyota after the game. despite all of the doom and gloom. some good things actually happened yesterday. jauan jennings was a monster against the seahawks. the whole team. they need the
9:01 pm
whole team to tackle him. that's next. so make it my smashed jack, rated the best burger in fast food. it's even got more beef than a big mac. chin up, ronald. maybe you'll get a participation trophy. my smashed jack, now on sourdough. welcome to jack in the box! starting a business is never easy, but starting it eight months pregnant, that's a different story. with the chase ink card, we got up and running in no time. earn unlimited 1.5% cash back on every purchase with the chase ink business unlimited card from chase for business.

2017 loss to seattle. so i was at the game and everybody's in the stands and people are trying to figure out, is it purdy? is it the offensive line or what is happening here? purdy completed 21 passes. ten of those went to jauan jennings, who has proven to be an absolute beast in this offense. i mean, especially once he turns it up the field one, two, three, four guys, they can't stop him. >> if one of my receivers was making catches and runs after the catch like this, i would feed him the rock as often as possible. every time jauan jennings is touching the ball, he's adding yards to the catch. and so he is doing the things that you need from a receiver at that position. he's blocking out there for guys and he's getting open in tight coverage. keep feeding him the rock. ten catches 91 yards for jauan jennings. it's a great game. even george kittle loves it. >> yeah and george kittle being out really hurt the 49 ers in terms of the running game. and it probably led to the number of targets that jennings got. you know you said get him the rock as many times as possible. they were trying.
9:05 pm
>> yeah no doubt about it. and without kittle on the field that's absolutely right. your running game is not what it's going to be. he is such a huge addition to that running game. being able to get to the end. find that that defensive player get to the strong safety whoever he needs to get to. he's really sound. and not that they don't have other guys behind him, but it's george kittle, right? so get jauan jennings the ball right. >> so jennings was targeted 11 times and he caught ten. he's been really fun to watch. and he's by the way on a reasonable contract since we started talking about what the numbers are going to look like. but here's the thing. let me just ask you this because everybody's dealing with injuries, okay? george kittle is one injury and a very significant one. and mccaffrey of course missed so much time. but you look at the lions aidan hutchinson their best pass rusher. he's he's done for the season. they just keep rolling and rolling and rolling. if you're that dependent on on any one guy to get your running game going to be able to get a guy in between defenders in the middle of a zone defense, you're really i mean, you're putting
9:06 pm
yourself behind the eight ball a little bit. >> you are. and the niners are. so talented with their entire staff. you think about all the guys that are there for them that they have. they had. that's why people were talking about them being super bowl contenders. but you had an injury here and then an injury there. and what that does is it starts to affect the mindset of the team. they're feeling like they're always pressed, they are always under duress in a game and when you start feeling like that, it carries over to the team and you can't figure out exactly what it is. you can't put your finger on what the problem is. but the problem is now that you see yourself as that team missing this person or missing that guy, and other guys aren't making the plays and so it becomes kind of an epidemic within the team, in the mindset as much as it does in terms of the injuries. now you lose a guy like nick bosa. that's a game changer. he is a game changer as a defensive end. he disrupts the pass, but other guys, you have to be able to replace him. it's the nfl. you're going to have injuries. >> well a guy that actually jordan mason replaced for a while christian mccaffrey missed
9:07 pm
half the season with achilles tendinitis back for the past couple of games. the numbers really aren't eye popping and it's not his fault. there's just nowhere to run on a lot of these plays. 32 carries for 118 yards, averaging 3.7 yards per carry, has yet to score a touchdown since coming back from the injury. i'm not sure if he's just still getting into football shape, but it just appears as though there's hardly any room to run through these holes. what do you see? >> i think he's getting back into game shape in terms of his vision. you know, as a running back, he's done it long enough that it's natural for him. but his vision to find the hole, see the hole cut through the hole is one thing in terms of playing in terms of, you know, the wind and how he's feeling at that point, he's probably getting back into game shape. now he's had game two. next game, he'll be even better. but in terms of just the instinctive drive and knowing how his teammates cut and the chemistry there, that's what he's trying to get used to. he hasn't been behind this particular line the way it's blocking right now with the same personnel and this team this season, and so as he gets more reps behind him, he'll understand it better. but we talked about it george kittle
9:08 pm
being out in this game. that's a huge piece. that niners run gam. >> but i would argue that they're not even running the ball as well now as they did when mason was running it in the first month of the season, because you and i would agree. >> and i think the numbers back that up. >> you and i looked at eight plays and they were running attempts and guys were missing blocks. everything was getting blown up every play. and so christian gets a yard or gets two yards. the offensive line is not not really bringing it well. >> and the thing is there's a difference between a zone running scheme, which we've talked about, and a gap running scheme, gap running scheme, power counter power traps. you're trying to push somebody out of a hole. move that hole, clear the gap. run guys through it. and oftentimes teams will be better at either gap blocking or zone blocking. in the nfl, a bunch of teams run zone blocking because you have plenty of time to practice it. you're supposed to read and run block the guy that comes through your zone. well, the niners aren't blocking either one of them extremely well right now. if you're going to be a gap team, be a gap team. if you're going to be a zone team, be a zone team. but
9:09 pm
they're not blocking either gap or zone schemes very well. and so that's a problem. especially for a running back. sometimes you just hang your hat on one. niners don't have anything to hang their hat on in the running game. >> and especially in that zone scheme like the stretch play. so the back gets the ball. and you know what he does. he puts his foot in the ground and then gets up the field or gets everybody to overrun. >> you stick your foot in the ground and get north and south. >> i just put it on a platter for you. i love one of the biggest problems the niners are having. i feel like i've said that like ten times already. >> it's just come up again. >> who's writing this stuff? they're playing all these low scoring games. they get off to painfully slow starts. last year on opening drives. we're doing a lot of contrast and compare here. okay. niners scored ten touchdowns on opening drives, two field goals, five drives that yielded nothing. that was last year ten tds, two field goals this year on opening drives, one touchdown, three field goals, six drives that led to nothing. that is a gigantic drop off. how do you explain
9:10 pm
that? >> well, now you're just being nostalgic. it's not executing. a lot of that has been the injury issues. you know they're without aiyuk. they're without deebo for a while. they're out without christian mccaffrey early on. and so you have a different chemistry in there. so that's a piece of it. but not finishing not being great in the run game. if you can get ahead of the chains in the run game then that puts you on track to get the first downs to continue drives. but if you can't, if you get off schedule in the run game, if you get off schedule with your first couple of plays, now you're in trouble and you end up trying to chase the chains. the whole time. >> well, even clock management towards the end of the game, kyle felt he had to throw the ball because they want to try to get one more first down, and instead they ended up leaving more time on the clock for seattle to come down and drive the length of the field. so it's one of those if you do, if you don't. it's one of these seasons where it's just not working. more to come on toyota after the game. we'll have highlights. well, there weren't that many,

early. joe mixon 45 yards. texans up seven. nothing in a flash. then dallas punting on their first possession. but no it's a fake. and it fails. and it's not a good one. and it's not a good one. so texans were ready to stop him short of the line to gain. former niners defensive coordinator demeco ryans hyped up that dak is not having. prescott is like, thank goodness i'm making 60 million a year. then mixon scored again to make it 14. nothing. kavontae turpin. he hit 22 miles an hour. that's the fastest by any player this season 1410 houston at the break would be so that fast i'd have to be on an electric bike. i'd be in a ferrari, right? texans put it away in the fourth. derek barnett we showed you this at the top. strips the ball away and barnett gets it back and he scores. and yes damico loves that as well. the texans roll roll roll to victory. 3410 cowboys have not won a game at home this season.

>> the roof coming down is kind of a good metaphor. i think that's an omen for how the season is going. it's a metaphor. you couldn't write it better than that. >> i think mike mccarthy was xeroxing resumes at halftime or something because that that that's not going to last. i did not think that i would ever say these words aloud publicly. however, i fully expect the detroit lions to be in the super bowl. i said it. jared goff and company are really on a roll. i mean, it's just crazy how good they are now. >> that's my dude right there. >> beat jacksonville 52 to 6 yesterday i know the jags are really bad. goff for 12 throwing and four touchdowns. here's here's a crazy stat. and i'm on ross saint brown is so good. lions scored six touchdowns while goff only had five incompletions. lions have won eight straight nine of their first ten in a season. for the first time since 1934. it's been a while. tell me what you see with goff and this team that's
9:16 pm
loaded with weapons. >> well, 82% passing. but what he's doing is he's really efficient as he's scanning the field as he's finding receivers. he understands the playbook and it's hard for people to understand how difficult it is to go from playbook to playbook, and how much time it takes to really grow into being an nfl quarterback. but jared had to play as a rookie number one overall pick. they expect you to play. and so he kind of got thrust into the game. and sometimes it takes a little bit. you have to step back from it to really get to a point where you get that comfort level. it's like that scene in the matrix where they talk about bullet time and you see keanu reeves is, you know, neo doing his thing. at a certain point for quarterbacks, the game slows down. you process faster. you process better, your efficiency goes through the roof. and right now this year we're seeing it in jared goff. we've talked. he's had a game where he didn't miss a pass. he's been 90% passing. his quarterback rating has just been sky high. week after week perfect quarterback rating. this week. so you're just seeing jared goff perfect timing great talent around him. his team believes a good coach that he
9:17 pm
believes in. and you're just seeing him take full advantage of it. >> i mean we're only a few years removed from coach campbell saying we're going to bite everybody's kneecaps off. and everybody made fun of him, right. yeah. speaking of the matrix, right. i mean, i thought you were going to do the backwards. >> you know, i don't move like that anymore. okay. not not in my repertoire. >> well, all of this may be a simulation anyway, right? it might not matter. one thing that jared goff never beat stanford. and the 127th edition of the big game is this saturday, 1230 kickoff at berkeley. stanford coming off an upset win over 19th ranked louisville. >> huge, who just absolutely fell apart in the last minute of that game. they got the personal foul to move the ball down field for that kick. and troy taylor calling a huge play to go for the score. but the bears having a rough one last week. last saturday versus syracuse they just had so many weapons the bears couldn't figure out where they were going to put the defense. and so they picked them apart. kyle mccord was really
9:18 pm
good in this game, and oronde gadsden, the second was also very good. his father and i gave each other concussions in the arena league. so he was he's a chip off the old block. he's just like his old man. really good football player. but syracuse offensively was very solid in this game and the bears couldn't figure it out. >> all right. so it's stanford and cal and the big game coach. >> besides the two big runs. are there any other positives you can take away from today's game. >> no this can't happen again. the level of execution and the almost. and i, you know, coulda, shoulda woulda is just way too many of them. and it's really frustrating and disappointing. and we obviously will have to have a very productive week of practice because you can't play. we can't play like that again. >> they do a great job. they've had a i mean all their games have been close. they're really
9:19 pm
talented really well coached. so it will be a it'll be a challenging one. but obviously it's a big game. our guys will be ready to roll. >> so stanford coming in at three and seven. cal is five and five when it takes. and we timed it out 12 seconds of silence before the coach responds. that is uncomfortable. and he's trying to think, what can i say here? that's not going to sound terrible. silence, silence. >> not cussing on tv. >> yes. i mean, it's just a tough situation, but that's where cal. hey, look, they're one win away from bowl eligibility, right? six, six. yeah. >> six wins gets you to a bowl. >> so i'm spinning it positively now. put your foot in the ground. get a bowl game. >> get a bowl game. >> all right. more to come on toyota after the game. how are the warriors doing. i'm off to a great start obviously in la at the intuit dome. highlights from the intuit dome. highlights from warriors clippers best. ♪ but my heart's of gold ♪
