a deadly month in bay area waters. another boat capsizes off the coast, triggering a frantic search for survivors. good evening. i'm ama daetz and i'm dan ashley. >> thanks for joining us. one person died and four others were rescued after the accident off the coast of bodega bay. the group was out crabbing when their boat capsized just before 2:00. rescuers tell us they faced 15 foot swells as they

helped the survivors to north salmon creek beach. >> this is the latest of several fatal boating accidents, all in bodega bay and all in the roughly two weeks since recreational crabbing season began. abc seven news reporter j.r stone set out to understand why this spot is becoming so deadly. >> this is the third small boat in two weeks to capsize or shipwreck near bodega bay. in this latest case, near north salmon creek beach. emergency responders saw that the boat was in trouble when it was around 150 yards off shore. >> they have an update now. there's one separated in the surf, and it appears to be 3 to 4 clinging to the boat. >> we had chp in the air. we had the coast guard in the water. we and were on the ground and all five people were actually on shore. so the four people, four people who survived were able to make it to shore. that fifth person who did not survive also made it to shore monday.

>> all five individuals on board were adults. officials say the wreck has similarities to what we saw in two other recent boat accidents. >> it's unusual to see this number of boat accidents in such a small period of time. this is our third boat accident in just about two weeks. all of them are crabbing all of them are recreational. >> millie biller is port captain of the inverness yacht club. she's very familiar with the water conditions where these accidents have happened. >> that is a particularly treacherous and hazardous body of water out there. we just had a full moon and king tides and so the currents are strong and unpredictable in that area. >> is it all current? is it wind? is it wave size? is it a combination of all of them? >> it's a total combination of all of them. >> biller says it's the m.o. for a lot of crab fishermen to set out their gear in the morning,

when the weather is calmer and pick it up in the afternoon when conditions have changed as to what happened here. officials are still trying to figure that out. in bodega bay, j.r. stone abc seven news and looking out live now. >> it is a chilly night in the bay area. it's on one of our last nights of calm before a major storm. an atmospheric river is heading toward the bay area, set to bring rain and flooding risk. >> so here we go. abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel is tracking the storm that's on the way. sandhya. yeah. >> it's the first significant atmospheric river, and it's going to leave its mark. dan and ama. i do want to show you what you can expect as early as wednesday. that atmospheric river starts to move in. the focus is going to be on the north bay. so i want to show you that level two storm on live doppler seven. it has a moisture plume that stretches for miles across the pacific that is going to lead to some heavy flooding, as that subtropical moisture and the storm combine. so 4 a.m. wednesday until 4 a.m. friday, there's a flood watch for the

north bay. they are looking at the potential for flooding on streams, creeks, certainly roadways. i think they're going to see it. so as we go, hour by hour wednesday morning, the rain is knocking at the door as we head into 9 a.m. it starts to spread. you will notice that the heaviest rain once again is focused right there on the north bay. we are looking at rainfall totals that will measure in inches in our northern part of our viewing area, 3.5in at yountville. as you can see, the winds will be picking up as well over 40 miles an hour at times. those gusts. and so it is a two on our exclusive abc seven news storm impact scale for wednesday. heaviest rain will be in the north bay with flooding there, gusty winds and light to moderate rain in other areas. this isn't the only day that i have a storm impact scale on the accuweather seven day forecast. i'll be back with a forecast that looks more like winter coming up ama all right, thank you sandhya, and you at home can keep an eye on the forecast all week long. >> using the abc seven news bay area app, it gives you access to the same live doppler seven tools. our weather team uses.

download the app and be sure to turn on the notifications for important updates. >> all right, now to some breaking news in the north bay. a postal worker was killed on the job tonight after being hit by a car in santa rosa just in the past 30 minutes. police identified the mail carrier as 33 year old irvin hernandez. tributes are already pouring in online, calling him an amazing coworker and friend. police say the suv driver was suffering a medical emergency and lost control of the vehicle. hernandez was standing outside his truck sorting mail when he was hit. >> awful. well, tomorrow, leaders in san mateo county will kick off a lengthy effort to fire the sheriff. >> the board of supervisors wants voters to give them the power to fire sheriff cristina corpus after a scathing audit of her leadership. >> tomorrow, they'll discuss plans for a special election next year. tonight, the sheriff is firing back in the strongest way possible. >> abc seven news i-team reporter dan noyes has an interview. you'll see only on seven. >> i have done nothing wrong. this is an attack. it's a coup

that has been in place for a while by the county executives. and the board of supervisors. >> the scathing audit contends that sheriff corpus is having an intimate personal affair with her civilian chief of staff, victor nj, and that she gave control of the sheriff's department to him. >> garbage. i say it's false. i am not having an affair with him. i've known victor for 17 years, 17 years and we are colleagues. i consider him a trusted confidant, a friend. is it because i'm a woman and i can't have a man next to me that i trust without having a sexual relationship with him? >> the audit cited phone call interviews with 40 current and past sworn and civilian employees, but they were all granted anonymity. they did not testify under oath and their interviews were not recorded. >> disgusted. appalled. why? because most of the information that's in there is made up false

and unverified and the most salacious accusations came from just one person identified as civilian employee number three, who works in records at the millbrae sheriff's substation, where corpus served as millbrae police chief before she became sheriff. >> corpus claims she heard a warning about employee number three one year ago, a prominent san mateo county female attorney went to one of my captains and said that if i didn't give this person a promotion, then i was going to regret it, corpus tells me. employee number three did not get a promotion and that she lied again and again to retired santa clara judge ladoris cordell, who conducted the audit. i read from the report to the sheriff. she says that you told her in 2022, if and j ever leaves me, i don't

know how i'll make it. i won't survive, i've never said that. >> dan never said that. >> employee number three went on and on, saying she saw corpus and i and j kissing on a couch at the substation that she frequently saw him rub her neck, shoulders and feet. that on a zoom she caught corpus and i and j at his ranch on the san mateo county coast, feeding each other in an intimate fashion, touching and rubbing each other, and playing footsie. that, and more not true, says the sheriff. employee number three was in the office. i and j said, quote, we're practicing a lot to have kids. the civilian employee responded, gross, i don't want to hear this. don't ever say anything like that to me again. and she says, you kind of chuckled that she was annoyed with him saying that that conversation happened. >> i never well, first of all, i'm not having a relationship. and secondly, i can't have children. and thirdly, that is just ridiculous. >> the audit also recounts a retired officer spotting corpus

how they're scrambling to prepare. >> as part of his reelection campaign, president elect donald trump has promised a major rise in the nation's tariffs. trump says the taxes on imports could rise to anywhere from 60 to 100% for countries like china and from 10 to 20% on products imported from other u.s. trading partners. while nothing has changed yet, the proposals are worrying many bay area business owners. >> we're very concerned about it and we think that it's not good for the consumer and it's not good for all of the businesses that we deal with. >> oliver mccrum owns an italian wine and spirits import business in berkeley. he worries that the tariffs become reality. they could severely impact his business. mccrum tells me to try and offset some of the potential harm. he's already started ordering months worth of product, a move he hopes will save him money. if tariffs go up next year. >> the concern, of course, is that storage is expensive and we would have to pay for goods before we would.

>> we would use them, but buying in bulk isn't an option for everyone, says san francisco based k-pop store owner kevin tang. >> because with the k-pop industry, there's always new releases and new comebacks and new musics in a quarterly basis, so we can't really pre-purchase something that hasn't existed yet. >> tang says his store, sirangelo, imports 100% of their products from south korea. he says if the tariffs happen, they'll have to make difficult decisions. >> yes, there definitely will be added cost into our products. and unfortunately, you know, in order for us to make up for that cost, it's obviously going to be shouldered by our customers. >> in the worst case scenario, if costs remain elevated for long and business slows down, tang says he might be forced to close his store for good. >> as an entrepreneur, it is important for me to be very adaptive and i think i have the team to help support me with that and ultimately, you know, we're not giving up without a fight. >> according to some estimates, the proposed tariffs could cost the average american household

around $2,600 per year. in san francisco, tim johns, abc seven news. >> pacifica school district just broke ground on affordable teacher and staff housing. a ceremony today marked the start of this project. the approach has been a success in other bay area cities. organizers are hopeful it will support teacher recruitment and retention. >> too often when we offer a position to a new recruit, they are excited about moving to pacifica but then have to turn down the position because of the cost of housing. many of our young teachers that grew up in pacifica and are devoted to our school district end up living in their childhood homes so they can stay in the community that they love. >> the complex will include one, two and three bedroom units. >> the bay area is about to be a major destination for some of the sports world's biggest events, from the nba all star game to super bowl 60 to the fifa world cup. the bay area is going to be busy. abc seven news reporter lauren martinez explains how local and state

here on wednesday. as we take a look at the flood risk, it is increasing for the north bay on wednesday. and you can see it is pretty much from the north bay all the way up towards the ukiah area and out towards yountville and beyond. it is an atmospheric river, as i said, highest impacts will be in the north bay flooding possibility wednesday through friday. gusty winds at times widespread rain expected on friday with thunder, chance and minor change in the storm track. just a reminder can lead to a shift in the impact area. so i want to show you a live picture right now from our south beach camera. a beautiful view of salesforce tower. visibility is all right. clouds are starting to increase ahead of the storm, but that's not insulating us enough because our high level clouds so they're pretty thin. temperatures are already falling. 37 fairfield. 38 in livermore and santa rosa. we do have a freeze warning for the north bay. and that is from midnight until 8 a.m. temperatures down to the low 30s. frost and freeze will damage any sensitive plants and any outdoor pipes, so make sure

you take precautions. and don't forget about those pets. parts of the east bay, south bay, santa cruz county area under a frost advisory. same time period, low to mid 30s. frost is expected. emeryville camera showing you san francisco for wednesday. it's an atmospheric river that arrives the highest impacts in the north bay, with a very cold night. tonight we have the warnings and advisories going up. so on our exclusive abc seven news storm impact scale wednesday is a two. it's a moderate strength storm. heaviest rain in the north bay with flooding expected. there likely minor on the roadways, streams and creeks could start to go over as well by the time we head into friday. gusty winds and light to moderate rain elsewhere, the winds will pick up out of the south wednesday morning over 40 miles an hour, getting to 50 by 11 a.m. along the coastline. you will notice the strongest winds along the coast as we head into the late night hours as well. and as we time this storm out for you, the morning commute begins. 7:00 the north bay is getting wet by 10 a.m. we're starting to see some of those showers elsewhere, and

at 2:00 in the afternoon, the heaviest is still in the north bay. by 6 p.m, that rain line shifts into the north bay, and it's just kind of stalled out there. wednesday evening before it starts to eventually shift southward. 5:00 thursday morning, we'll get light to moderate rain across the entire area. 11 a.m. scattered showers. so rainfall projections taking you all the way through saturday night with this storm system. we're talking over a foot in ukiah, over eight inches santa rosa, but 8/10 of an inch around san jose and brentwood. san francisco over an inch along with oakland. winter storm warning for the sierra tomorrow afternoon to wednesday night above 3500 up to two feet for the peaks with those gusty winds, it will be impossible to difficult to travel. i would hold off by sunday. you're going to have 51in of snow at donner. if this model is right. 41 at kirkwood, just in time for thanksgiving and skiing or boarding 30s and 40s tomorrow morning, it is definitely going to be cold, so bundle up tomorrow afternoon. you are looking at high temperatures in
