vladamir putin has a new warning for the united states after president biden agreed to let ukraine use long range missiles to strike inside russia. chief foreign correspondent ian pannell starts us off from ukraine. good morning, ian. >> reporter: good morning, george. nuclear sabre rattling from the kremlin with putin threatening to use nuclear weapons if ukraine fires american made missiles into russia. the doctrine was updated in what it calls the new situation. the new russian policy essentially authorizes the use of nuclear weapons in response to what it calls critical threats of aggression using conventional weapons. remember, president biden lifting restrictions on the attack of ballistic missileses which are conventional weapons, essentially allowing them to be fired into russia. putin has made nuclear threats before that proved to be hollow. a senior ukrainian military source telling me this is blackmail but also warning the nuclear weapons is a pandora's box that shouldn't be open. this aimed at pres

trump upping the pressure on republican senators to confirm former congressman matt gaetz for attorney general. even calling some senators directly. this as the attorney for two women who testified in the gaetz house ethics investigation speaks out claiming one of his clients saw the republican fire brand having sex with a minor, an allegation gaetz denies. what did your client witness? >> she testified in july of 2017 at this house party. she was walking out to the pool area and looked to her right and saw representative gaetz having sex with her friend who was 17. >> at the time he was a sitting congressman? >> i don't know if she was aware of who he was at the time. at the time, yes, he was a sitting congressman for about six months. my client testified to the house that gaetz did not know she was a minor and that when he learned that she was a minor that he broke off things and did not continue a sexual relationship until she turned 18. >> do we know how old he was at

the time of this encounter? >> i believe he was 35. >> and she was 17. about to turn 18. presumably. >> i believe so. >> florida attorney joel leopard adding both of his clients testified before the house ethics panel after being subpoenaed by congress, describing how gaetz paid them both for sex using venmo. >> they essentially took the venmo payments on the screen and asked about them. my clients repeatedly testified what was that for? that was for sex, yes. >> do you know how many time, how many parties your clients went to and had sex with representative gaetz? >> not all of them were parties. some of them were events, such as they attended election events at hotels. they went with him to new york for a taping on fox news. but approximately ten times, 10 to 15 times. >> their testimony is that representative gaetz took them across state lines for the purpose of having sex and paid them for that?

>> that's correct. >> the under age girl who is now in her 20s also testified before the ethics committee. leopard said his clients do not want to testify again for a senate confirmation but he said they believe what they told the house investigators should be made public. >> this is not a political hit job. this is not an anti-matt gaetz stance, per se. it is more that this is what happened to them. it's true. they want the american people to know about this as they consider their future attorney general potentially. >> the 42-year-old resigning from congress last week, the same day president-elect trump announced gaetz as his pick for attorney general. a transition spokes person calling the allegations against him baseless and an attempt to derail the second trump administration. house speaker mike johnson has said the report should not be released. but before they approve gaetz to lead the department of justice, a growing number of republican senators say they want to see the report and know exactly what his accusers say they saw. >> it would be in everybody's

this morning president-elect trump is preparing to follow through on his promise of mass deportations. sources tell abc news the trump team is already considering expanding immigration detention centers and restarting family detentions. the president-elect saying he has plans to declare a national emergency and use the military to help deport undocumented immigrants. trump's new border czar tom homan, said he's heading down to mar-a-lago to put the, quote, final touches on a plan that he said will amount to shock and awe. but homan acknowledges there are many unanswered questions about trump's plans, including how much it will cost. >> we've got to have the resources to do the job. i have been asked 1,000 time, how many people can you remove the first year? well, how many agents do i have? how many buses do i have? how much money do i have with airplanes? can the dod get involved?

can dod take a lot off our plate? >> reporter: according to some mass deportation could cost $88 billion a year and send inflation spiking as millions of workers are removed from the work force. arizona's governor, the latest democratic governor to say her state will not use resources to aid trump's effort, calling them misguided. >> it harms communities. it tears families apart. we're not gonna -- that's not gonna happen on my watch. >> reporter: the aclu now suing the federal government seeking details on trump's plan, looking for information about how authorities might quickly remove people from the country. trump officials say deportation would be just one element of a vastly different approach to immigration. with plans to stop issuing citizenship documents to children born in the u.s. to undocumented parents in an unproven effort to all but end birth right citizenship, something trump has long promised.

taking part in an unofficial election. among them is joshua huang the poster boy of hong kong's protest. i just spoke to one of the last pro democracy voices who isn't afraid to speak. she said she is distressed and saying as for the pro democracy movement, we will carry on. rebecca? >> rebecca: we turn now to the wild fires in the northeast. there is an elevated fire risk throughout the region as drought warnings are issued including here in new york city. trevor ault is in haynesport, new jersey. good morning, trevor. >> reporter: good morning, rebecca. so we've been watching overnight just east of philadelphia the number of flames have been popping up. you see the smoke there. we're in a residential area just behind a strip mall. look how close this is to a lot of people's homes. overnight this was really scary. larger flames threatening a number of people's homes there. thankfully firefighters were able to get there to stop it from threatening those structures. new fires are sparking every day.

the already established fires continue to burn. the jennings creek fire on the new york/new jersey border. that breached containment over the weekend. it could continue to burn for weeks. in new york city the mayor just declared the first drought warning there in 20 years. they say in the first two weeks of november, the firefighters there have already had to fight 270 brush fires. that is the most ever. michael? >> michael: all right, trevor. thank you for that. there is some relief on the way. ginger's tracking the rain headed to the northeast. good morning, ginger. >> rebecca: good morning. some is the operative word. we'll take every bit we can get. but we're not alone. new york is not the only place. 83% of this nation has some sort of abnormal dry or level of drought. if we look at deficits in the northeast, it's between 7, 8 and 9 inches of rain that we desperately need. we're not gonna get that. not with one storm. in between the two storms which we've got nothing from, we do have red flag warnings for all of massachusetts. the winds are higher.

the proximity to that low over the ocean. connecticut and rhode island have the elevated fire risk today as well. relative humidities are super low, under 30% for some. that's gonna change as we invite wednesday night into thursday morning through the poconos. you've got rain, even snow. say we get an inch, if we're really lucky. we would need eight of those storms to get back to where our reservoirs are back in place. >> rebecca: wow. all right, ginger. thank you. we turn now to a deadly stabbing spree on the streets of new york city. stephanie ramos is here with the latest. good morning, stephanie. >> reporter: rebecca, good morning. three people are dead following a chilling stabbing spree on the streets of manhattan monday. officials say the 51-year-old homeless man allegedly attacked without saying a word to his victims. watch this surveillance video where you see him put a large knife in his pockets moments before the first attack. he allegedly stabbed a 36-year-old construction worker a little before 8:30 a.m. then two hours later a 68-year-old man was attacked while fishing. both men died after the stabbings.

then just before 11:00 a.m., a 36-year-old woman was stabbed multiple times near the united nations head quarter. she later succumbed to her injuries. a cab driver who witnessed the third attack followed the suspect and alerted an officer. police found two bloody kitchen knives on rivera and that his clothes were covered in blood. guys, police say rivera had eight prior arrests. his arraignment is expected sometime today. michael? >> michael: senseless, stephanie. thank you so much for that. we're gonna turn now to a new surgeon general report saying cigarette smoking is twice as common among people living in poverty. erielle reshef is here. erielle, this comes as the american lung association now says many adults who are eligible for lung cancer screening are just not getting it. >> that's right, michael. although smoking has declined significantly, it is still a heavy toll that it is taking on families, contributing to nearly half million deaths per year. one way to fight that, of course, is getting screened for lung cancer. the newly released report by the american lung association

finding less than 20% of eligible adults are actually up to date on lung cancer screening. researchers found just 16% of people who meet the criteria are getting the suggested testing. the current guidelines recommend ct scans for adults 50-80 with a smoking history of 20 or more pack years. that's packs per day multiplied by the years of smoking. if you smoked one pack per day for 20 years that's 20 pack years. it could also mean if you smoked two packs a day for ten years. currently, 43% of lung cancer cases are not detected until they are at late stage. so early detection through scans could be key to improving outcomes. in the past years lung cancer has remained the leading cause of cancer deaths with survival rate at 28.4%. it's important to note lung cancer can also affect those who have never smoked so be sure to talk to your doctor if you've been exposed to second hand smoke, they can recommend screenings that are right for you. george?

his podcast, saying he got the file on his desk. but at this point he thinks the right thing to do would be to kick it back down to l.a.'s newly elected d. a. and for him to make the decision. this morning that setback for erik and lyle menendez. >> the menendez file, which is a little thicker because we did deeper research in the last ten days, that's all on my desk. i think it's the right thing to do to hear from the new da before i make any decision. >> reporter: california's governor, who the brothers recently petitioned for clemency, revealing on his podcast he will leave it to l.a.'s incoming da nathan hochman to decide the brothers fate. >> i think it's important under the circumstance, out of respect not just to him, the incoming da, but those who elected him in los angeles. >> reporter: erik and lyle have been behind bars for 34 years for the murders of their parents jose and kilty menendez at their beverly hills mansion. >> the governor is waiting until the new da has a chance to review it. this may allow for another way

of release for the menendez brothers without the governor having to step into the legal system. he may actually prefer that route. >> reporter: hochman said he is concerned about how social media could shape perception. >> if you decide this case based on just reviewing a netflix documentary, you're doing a disservice to the menendez brothers, to the victims families, to the public. >> reporter: hochman said on his very first day on the job, december 3rd, he'll begin reviewing the file and treat it just like any other case. but this isn't any other case. there is a mountain of evidence here including transcripts from two trials. it's going to take sometime to review that. because of that, it will push back the december 7th resentencing hearing likely into the new year. guys? >> george: okay, matt. thanks very much. now new details in the laken riley case. prosecutors played body cam video of police questioning the suspect on the morning after the 22-year-old nursing student's murder.

senior national correspondent steve osunsami is in atlanta with the story. good morning, steve. >> reporter: good morning to you, george. prosecutors continue to try and connect this accused murderer to the young woman who was killed saying gps records show that he was at the scene of the crime. some of the police videos and audios they've been playing in court have been difficult for the victim's family to hear. the judge who will decide his fate watched this newly released body camera video in court where police are seen waking up 26-year-old jose ibarra and questioning him about the murder on the jogging trail near his apartment. >> what injury did you observe? >> i noticed on his right arm there was a scratch which i identified as a potential defensive wound. on his left arm he had a forearm scratch very similar which in my mind looked like finger nail scratches. >> reporter: for many in this

country, ibarra has become a case in point in the argument over immigration. he's from venezuela and illegally entered the country two years ago. he is pleading not guilty to the murder of 22-year-old laken riley who was killed while she was out jogging. police say she fought for her life. her mother broke down in court when prosecutors shared the video of riley trying to call 911 for help. investigators testified they found ibarra's fingerprints on riley's cell phone. >> reporter: she placed that call at 9:11:00 a.m. her heart stopped beating 17 minutes later. this case will be decided by a judge. it is not a jury trial. if this accused murderer is convicted, guys, he could spend the rest of his life in prison. guys? >> rebecca: just thinking about laken and her family. they have been through so much. okay, steve. thank you. we turn now to sean diddy combs.

he says prosecutors violated his rights after they accused him of contacting potential witnesses in his upcoming trial. senior investigative correspondent aaron katersky is tracking the case. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. sean combs is accusing federal prosecutors of violating his rights by leafing through his hand written jail house notes calling it outrageous government conduct amounting to a substantive due process violation. the feds seized those notes in a recent raid and prosecutors used them to claim combs was actively continuing to obstruct justice while in custody. they said he's been calling people he's not supposed to call, trying to shape public opinion and paying off potential witnesses, including his former diddy dirty money band mate. prosecutors say they drew a strong inference from combs personal notes that he paid harper to make a public statement supporting him. combs has pleaded not guilty to racketeering, conspiracy, sex trafficking and prostitution charges. he's trying again this week to

great to be here. >> rebecca: thanksgiving right around the corner. going to be the busiest travel season we've seen. we're wondering if wait times will be any shorter this year than last year? are you ready? >> we are ready. this has been a busy, busy year. if you look at the top ten days in tsa history they've all occurred sin may of this year. it's going to transition right into thanksgiving. we expect tuesday before, a week from now, wednesday before and the sunday after will be the busiest days. the sunday after is likely to be a 3 million passenger day which is a very high number. >> rebecca: wow. as family packs their luggage, anything to keep in mind, especially parents that are traveling with things like milk and formula? >> sure. those are things you can bring through the check point. you just have to advise the officer. best advice i can give is go on the tsa website, tsa.gov. there's a section that says what can i bring? just type in what you have a question about andt will tell you what you can bring. >> rebecca: what is the current security level?

what kinds of issues are you seeing? >> the current security level is something that we manage each and every day. we do it together with the intelligence community, with other federal partners, with state and local law enforcement airport, air carriers. something we constantly assess. we are always vigilant. that's the thing that i would ask everybody to keep in mind. always be vigilant. you just never know. we have a very, very advanced security system in the u.s. passengers should have no concerns about traveling this thanksgiving. >> rebecca: there are going to be a lot of us out there. how about on the tsa point. how's staffing at this point? >> staffing highest ever. part of the reason is we were able to get a new pay package through about a year and a half ago that finally allowed us to pay our tsa officers and federal air marshall the same rates everybody was being paid. our attrition rate, the rate at which people leave the work force, have gone down by 50%. that's been significant. so we are in the best shape ever for staffing. that's due, too, to the great dedication of the work force.

the iconic matriarch in rich asians she was a global martial arts action star. so physical. now she's sharing a painful chapter in her life where she said she felt like her body failed her. this morning oscar winning actress michelle yeoh opening up about her struggles with infertility and pressure to have children. >> i always wanted to have children. i wasn't, honestly, not for the lack of trying. >> reporter: the 62-year-old sharing her heart break on women's hour podcast saying she and her husband struggled during fertility treatments. >> every month you feel like such a failure, and then you go like, why? i think at some point you stop blaming yourself. there are certain things in your body that doesn't function in a certain way. that's how it is. you just have to let go and move on. and i think you come to a point where you just have to stop blaming you. >> reporter: she calls it the biggest sadness of her life and

says she still thinks about it to this day. yeoh saying her inability to have kids was the main factor in the end of her first marriage but adding, motherhood is a woman's choice. >> it's your choice whether you want to have children. and it shouldn't be imposed on you just because you're a woman, you should have a child. that should not be the case. >> reporter: yeoh now married to a french motor executive and looking forward to the future. >> we just had a grandchild. you feel you are still very, very blessed because you do have a baby in your life. >> get this. yeoh added, the beauty is that i have six god children, many nieces and nephews. i don't live with regrets, she says, because i've always given 110%. that's what i call a happy ever after story in true hollywood fashion, guys. >> rebecca: absolutely. >> michael: thank you very much, juju. we are here now with honestly one of my favorite guys. he must be if i'm gonna say it. philadelphia eagles quarterback jalen hurts.

[ applause ] before we get to football, i want to talk about your involvement in philly's schools. your parents are educators. they helped you start your foundation. tell us about that. >> it's something that happened very naturally, you know? the jalen hurts foundation was something that was brought to life this year. but it was always in me to be impactful and of service in the community, whether i was at alabama, oklahoma, now being in philly being my home. i just wanted to create something that fosters mentorship to our youth, something that could help progress our youth and serve our youth. there are multiple ways to do that. it's been a fun process. i've been able to give back.

>> george: one of your programs is called td's for ac's. explain what that is. >> competitively, the main thing is to go out there and win and do what you can to help your team win. but, it extends an opportunity to not only get the fans engaged but to have purpose behind every touchdown. there's something i really thought about, the foundation team thought about. just trying to foster, continue to foster the change we already began coming into it. it was something so natural. i've never watched the news. i'm always locked in onto the next thing. i caught one day, i caught that kids were -- it was fall. rising temperatures in philadelphia. school district of philadelphia had to cancel school because it was so hot and they didn't have the proper air conditioning systems to keep the kids in

school. something so simple but yet so challenging and important. that happened. i saw it on the news and it caught me. it took sometime to get involved and get the change made. but we were able -- >> george: did you get air conditioners in those schools? >> we already did that. in the spring of this year everything was finalized. we had 314 ac's installed over ten years in the school district of philadelphia. so the touchdown for ac's pretty much extends that initiative. so now for years to come, it will be something that i will be able to share with the city, with the school district. be able to impact those kids in that way. >> george: you're having a great season. six wins in a row. >> i think about it. man, how many more touchdowns can i have? [ laughter ] winning always helps.

it brings a great spirit to the city, too. that's important. those kids are always watching. >> rebecca: i got to ask about the tush push play. i said to say that out loud. here's jason kelce explaining exactly what it is. >> here they go. they pick it up. >> like a glove. there we go. >> rebecca: okay. what is tougher, that or a sack? >> sacks are no fun. they had up to a foot of snow. that's i-80 in northern nevada. that was the storm before. but now we've got a serious bomb cyclone. they get these this time of year. there are flood watches especially northern bay area. wind advisories and high wind warnings for up to 85 mile per hour gusts in some of the highest elevations. a blizzard warning in the cascades. we're talking one to three feet, the highest elevations outside of there of snow. and

thanksgiving is a great time for a special to debut. >> well, i was so excited that hulu wanted to do that timing, because i think -- you know, as any parent knows, there is trying to find entertainment that everyone can watch and just how comedy comes out and is clean because jesus told me. [ laughter ] but it's also, so it's considered family friendly. so around thanksgiving we all need something, you know? you'll be watching games. you need something. you need a break where you can all sit in a room and maybe watch the same thing. i was excited for that opportunity that it's coming out thanksgiving. >> rebecca: all right. let's take a look at a clip. >> teenagers have made me a better comedian. that's not it. [ laughter ] a bitter comedian. i know that sounds negative, but it is almost sad when a kid becomes a teenager. you have this cute 12-year-old and boom they become satan.

[ laughter ] right? they have kind of like, oh, they should be in concussion protocol. like they should take parents of teenagers and put them in those tents, right? [ laughter ] >> rebecca: do the eye thing, yeah. >> i do empathize with teenagers. for me it reminds me, oh, i was crazy. >> rebecca: right. >> i was crazy. my dad was not -- he was angry for a reason. [ laughter ] i was like, this guy's a jerk. but i was the jerk. full circle. >> george: have they rebelled against being comedy fodder?

>> well, they're so disinterested. do you know what i mean? they'll hear from classmate, i heard you got another special coming out. 'cause there is like a whole -- there's always a couple kids in the class that are really into standup. >> michael: they are a big source of your material, but what have you learned from them? >> oh, gosh. i mean, i've learned how stupid i am. do you know what i mean? definitely. some of it is they remind me, right? they'll be like, you don't know anything. [ laughter ] it's so cool because as a kid you remember that moment when you realize, my dad doesn't know everything. in fact, he knows nothing. right? i'm constantly learning from them. who knows? they don't know anything. [ laughter ] kids are dumb. >> rebecca: do you ever watch the standup with them in the room? have you made them watch it with you? >> we've done that.

i do attempt that everything i say that is referencing them is something that they would defend, do you know what i mean? i'm not like, here's a story of my teenage son that would embarrass them, you know? even if i did, i wouldn't care. >> michael: we're back now on gma with an actor whose film career has spanned more than 40 years from the goonies to dune. now josh brolin has a new memoir "from under the truck." josh, welcome back to gma, man. >> thanks, man. >> michael: 40 years? can you believe it's been 40 years? >> no, because i'm only 38. >> michael: i know. >> jesus, what happened? >> michael: started before conception. >> i was acting before i was born. yeah. >> michael: congratulations on this book. tnk you. >> michael: you cover so much. you cover your acting career. you cover your family, struggles with addiction.

what made you think this was the right time to write a book? >> people keep asking me that because i'm too young to write a book. i've always written. i've had probably 90 journals since i was 7 or 8 years old. when i would see these, you go back and start revisiting the time when you were a teenager. we were talking about kids. what's that like? when you have teenagers i get to go back and revisit what it was like having a teenager. what it was like hitting 20, 30, or whatever. i've written three books that i threw in a dark corner and let them accumulate dust. finally instead of buying a porshe i wrote a memoir. it's my midlife crisis. it is. >> michael: that's your midlife crisis. share your life with everybody. >> just activate instead of freak out, my god, what am i going to do? i'm 50. i wrote a play. i started directing. i wrote this memoir. i feel very active right now.

>> michael: you write a lot about your mom. >> i do. >> michael: she took care of wild animals, wolfs, bob cats. there's a picture of you in your crib with a mountain lion. what was that like growing up with all these animals? >> literally the most irresponsible parent imaginable. that's not a cub. that's an adolescent mountain lion. i have a mark on my face. i don't know if it just bit me or what. but anyway, we had wolves. my brother was attacked by a wolf. he had 60 stitches in his leg. we used to have to clean the cages. it was just part of ranch life. she's from texas. she was nuts. then she had us and we suffered the trials and tribulations of being the kids of jane. >> michael: when you were 16 you went to live with your father. >> i did. >> michael: actor james brolin. >> slept on the couch. >> michael: then you booked "goonies." >> yeah. not right away. sounds like it. i went to go sleep on the co i started auditioning. i came up with a resume that was

total bull, 100%. i made up plays. i made up theaters. labrera international theater in italy, doesn't exist. i went out to get an agent. one finally -- i think they all knew, but one finally said, i probably went on 300, 350 auditions before i got the "goonies." >> michael: wow. never give up, basically. >> never give up. i think it was an accident. i don't think i was very good. not in the "goonies" but just as an auditioner. as a guy going in, pretending. anyway. i got that. i think i looked right, i was right and it just happened. it was all downhill from there. it doesn't get any better than the "goonies." >> michael: you said you may not be good as an auditioner, but you're great what you do. "no country for old men." we talked about that. one of my favorite movies. you talk about working with the cohen brothers. what was that like? >> amazing. people always ask me, do they argue? do they this, that? they don't argue.

they're some of the best filmmakers. i'm close with them. i've done three movies with them and a short. i've gotten lucky. it took me 20 years to get lucky, but i got there. >> michael: you got there eventually. you also talk about addiction and how your stepmother, barbara streisand challenged you about your sobriety. >> she didn't challenge me. she was just honest. i'd walk in the house and say, can i have a glass of wine? she'd say, aren't you an alcoholic? i'd be like, all right. step back. it's all right. just want a glass of wine. she was just always honest with me. it's been, what, 27 years that they've been together. i appreciate the honesty. i appreciate forthright women in my life. i have a lot of them. i have three girls. they're all personalities. they all keep me in check, yeah. >> michael: you have a number of films coming out next year. >> yeah. >> michael: what are you most excited about? >> "knives out 3" is fun.

that's a fun movie. daniel craig and glenn close and ryan johnson directed it. it was one of the first movies i've read in a long time where i was like, am i good enough to do this? the writing was that elevated. i think that's good. i got "weapons" coming out "dune 3" may happen. >> michael: are we going to see a "dune 3?" >> you never want to assume, but i assume you'll see me in the sand again. >> michael: let's not assume. let's flat out tell them you need to be in it. >> i think it's going to happen. i've heard it's going to happen and i'm waiting for the word. >> michael: all right. i'll take that. >> okay. >> michael: josh, always good to see you. congratulations on this book. >> thank you. >> michael: pick up "from under the truck." it is available right now. >> ginger: thanks so much, michael. let's talk about chicago because they still have not yet had their first freeze of the season. so it's about a month late. and the latest on record is november 24th, so will they get there? they're gonna get close to a freeze by thursday morning.

>> ginger: this much? >> i would do the whole thing. my dad did a ton of olive oil in this dish. some garlic. i'm going to season it with salt and lots of pepper, black pepper. >> ginger: and that red pepper. >> i love it. it's spicy. you can adjust it to your liking. pop it in the oven at a high temperature. they're gonna roast. you want them to burst. when they burst they're gonna look like this. they're gonna look like that. >> ginger: looks nice. the next part is the coolest part. this is truly one pan. we do not even have to cook the pasta. >> have you ever done anything like that? >> ginger: no. it sounds wild. >> it's genius. you can use any pasta. dump the orzo in first. >> ginger: you suggest orzo. >> i like a short pasta so it cooks up nice and evenly. then you're going to add water. water will help it cook in the oven. the order in which you do it isn't that important. this is one thing we're going to

do on top. little bit of these are kalamata olives. then pepperchini. how do you feel about a pickled pepper? i adore pickled peppers. mix it. then some italian seasoning which really brings in some flavor. mix it up. some basil in there. we'll toss that and finish it with basil, too. mix it all together to get the flavors combined. we've got cheese here. tons of mozzarella. dump it all at once before you put it in the oven. >> ginger: go for it. >> it's simple and easy. the only thing you're doing beforehand is roasting the tomatoes because you want them to burst and create a sauce. if you don't do meat, that's fine. we're going to do pepperoni. i love pepperoni, as you will
