to have you with us here on a very busy tuesday night. just moments ago in texas, president-elect donald trump with elon musk for a test of the spacex starship, designed to one day take humans to the moon and to mars. president-elect trump traveled to texas to witness the launch with musk, who has been at trump's side nearly every day since trump won the election. the sight as starship lifted off. we have seen the takeoff before, and then all eyes watching to see the booster separate and return to earth for that catch maneuver. when four minutes into the test flight, the decision was made to divert the booster to a splashdown in the gulf instead. the images just in tonight, and gio benitez leads us off. >> reporter: tonight, president-elect trump with elon musk in texas. there for the sixth test launch of the spacex starship meant to eventually take humans to the moon and mars. the countdown -- >> three, two, one -- >> we have liftoff. >> reporter: the launch itself successful.

the booster even detaching as it's supposed to. >> engine startup. >> reporter: but then, spacex seeing some issue with the booster. >> booster offshore divert. unfortunately, that means, we are no-go for the catch. >> reporter: it was supposed to land back in texas. but to save it from potentially destroying the spacex launch facility -- or endangering lives on land -- the booster shifting course and heading to the gulf instead for a splashdown. once it hits the water, a spectacular explosion. >> splashdown in the ocean. >> reporter: the booster is only built for an emergency water landing. this is what it was supposed to do. that incredible catch back in boca chica just a month ago. and david, elon hopes to send starship to mars by 2026. they're going to have to keep testing this before they put any people onboard to make sure it's safe. david? >>. >> david: gio, thank you. president-elect trump there

with elon musk ahmed the political firestorm. also tonight, the news the president-elect has big news for dr. oz to join in the administration, too. elon musk sending out a message, saying he supports gaetz, and what he said about him. there is also new reporting here, what's in that house ethics report? and were documents hacked in a civil case that included testimony from a 17-year-old that gaetz is accused of having sex with? gaetz denies any wrongdoing. and today, that pick from president-elect trump, dr. oz. what will his role be? here's mary bruce tonight. >> reporter: tonight, president-elect donald trump at that texas rocket launch with elon musk. the two men virtually inseparable since trump won the white house. and tonight, the world's richest man with a public vote of support for trump's most embattled cabinet pick -- his nominee for attorney general, former florida congressman matt gaetz. musk posting gaetz has "three critical assets that are needed for the ag role -- a big brain, a spine of steel, and an axe to grind."

adding, "gaetz will be our hammer of justice." but gaetz faces a senate confirmation first. and tonight, a growing number of republican senators are demanding the release of the report from the house ethics committee which investigated gaetz over allegations of sexual misconduct and illicit drug use. >> i think that if they want a speedy consideration of this nomination, there's -- we got to have as much transparency as we can have. >> reporter: the committee spoke with two women who say gaetz paid them for sex. one of them testifying she saw the congressman having sex with a 17-year-old girl. her lawyer talking to abc's juju chang. >> at this particular event, what did your client witness? >> so, she testified that in july of 2017, at this house party, she was walking out to the pool area, and she looked to her right and she saw representative gaetz having sex with her friend, who was 17.

>> reporter: sources tell abc the committee also heard from that 17-year-old girl, now in her 20s. tonight, some senators say that whether or not the ethics committee releases its report, if there is damaging information about gaetz, it will get out. it comes as we are learning a hacker has obtained documents from a civil case involving a friend of the former congressman, including a deposition from that 17-year-old girl, as well as from the other woman who says she saw the sexual encounter. senators have hinted the women themselves could be called as witnesses in gaetz's confirmation hearing. >> the reality is all that information is going to be on display at the hearing. think brett kavanaugh. >> reporter: gaetz has denied any wrongdoing. president-elect trump has been personally calling republican senators, urging them to get onboard. but tonight, alaska's lisa murkowski says she won't be a rubber stamp. >> i'm not interested in a process that would say, well, because the president has named him and you have republican chairs coming into the new

congress, we just move people out. there needs to be legitimate vetting. this is our job. >> reporter: tonight, trump standing by gaetz. >> mr. president, are you reconsidering the nomination of matt gaetz? >> no. >> reporter: gaetz just one of several controversial cabinet picks. trump tapping noted vaccine skeptic robert f. kennedy jr. as secretary of health and human services. and tonight, the president-elect announcing one of kennedy's top deputies will be tv personality, dr. mehmet oz. oz, who ran a failed senate campaign in pennsylvania, now picked to run the centers for medicare and medicaid services working closely with kennedy, though neither man has any government experience. now, tomorrow, the bipartisan house ethics committee will meet to decide whether to vote to decide to release its report on matt gaetz. the question is whether republicans will agree. meanwhile, tonight, trump continues to fill out his team, naming his transition co-chair

to be commerce secretary. he had been running a not so subtle campaign to be treasury secretary. sources say that didn't sit so well with trump, opting to put him in this position, insteltd. david? >> david: mary, thank you. tonight, the new fire breaking out in new york city. dry, windy conditions from new york all the way to boston font. ginger zee is standing by on this new system coming through, bringing heavy rain and when it hits. but first, trevor ault on the scene of this new fire right here in new york tonight. >> reporter: tonight, a brush fire breaking out in new york city. smoke billowing along upper manhattan's harlem river drive. >> they've got about ten acres burning at this point. it is a second alarm blaze that they are trying to get under control. >> reporter: the fdny says they battled more than 270 brush fires in the first two weeks of november alone. this one just the latest to flare up in the drought-stricken northeast. overnight, south of boston, gusty winds fueling a brush fire in milton. crews there battling the flames

as the blaze grew to more than 40 acres. and massachusetts officials say more than 600 fires have scorched a year's worth of acreage in less than two months. in new hampshire, firefighters from multiple towns converging on a fire in brentwood. and right around dinner time, east of philadelphia, in hainesport, new jersey, terrified families could only watch as the flames got dangerously close. >> you hear about fire danger every -- but you never think it's going to come to your, your neighborhood or your town. >> reporter: and david, you see the major response here from the fdny. there is some relief in the forecast thursday, with some rain, but even with that, the step's also now activating their flash flood plan. david? >> david: trevor ault, thank you. let's get right to ginger zee with more on what you just mentioned, trevor. she's tracking the rain coming and the real threat also we're watching in the west tonight. but first, the rain, ginger, when does it get here? >> reporter: it gets here thursday morning. but it will start wednesday night in pennsylvania. i'll time it out for you, david. we desperately need it.

new york city has a nine-inch rain deficit since september 1st. and it looks like we could get an inch or two. see the timing at 7:00 a.m. it's going to be so heavy and we're so dry, that flash flooding and ponding on the roads around new york city, new jersey, going to be an issue. boston gets it by the evening of thursday. and then into friday, we'll have some wraparound. so, that will be much needed and added moisture. and you notice there's some snow there in the poconos. have to tell you about the life-threatening flash flood potential for northern california, the blizzard warning in the kags kalcads. we're talking feet of snow, and winds up to 85 miles per hour. >> david: you mentioned that flash flooding here in the northeast, because it's been so dry. we'll be watching that right here with you, ginger, thank you. also here in new york city tonight, we're learning more about that deadly stabbing spree across manhattan. the suspect appearing before a judge, charged tonight with three counts of first degree murder. police say he has confessed to the killings. as we now learn more about the

three victims. a construction worker, a man fishing along the east river, and a woman outside the u.n. here's stephanie ramos. >> reporter: tonight, the suspect police say is responsible for a bloody and deadly stabbing spree across the heart of new york city appearing in court, now charged with three counts of first degree murder. >> why did you do it? >> reporter: according to police, 51-year-old ramon riviera confessed to the callous killings carried out just before 8:30 a.m. monday. rivera is seen here putting on gloves, a hoodie, and pulling a large knife out of a backpack, before stabbing a construction worker, a man fishing, and then a woman outside the united nations. rivera was arrested nearby with blood stains on his clothing, armed with two large kitchen knives. the construction worker, angel landi, was stabbed multiple times. his older sister, berta, saying tonight, "i need justice for my brother." the deadly attack has many on high alert as questions grow about why rivera, who has a history of mental health issues and a lengthy

criminal record, was on the street after nine prior arrests here in the last year. david, the mayor says this is a wakeup call for our justice system. all three murders were unprovoked. david? >> david: stephanie ramos in new york. steph, thank you. we turn to the chilling new testimony today in the trial of about undocumented migrant accused in the murder of georgia nrsing student laken riley. the last text tonight that she sent her mother. here's faith abubey. >> reporter: in a georgia courtroom today, prosecutors showing this chilling security footage they say shows jose ibarra just hours before he allegedly killed nursing student laken riley on a nearby jogging trail. the hooded figure seen lurking around apartments at the university of georgia, peering into windows and trying to open a door. >> what does he do right there at 7:54? >> he is ducking down. >> reporter: prosecutors say ibarra was hunting for women the morning riley was last seen going out for a run, reading her final text to her mom. >> it says, "good morning, about to go for a run.

if you're free to talk." >> reporter: but prosecutors say minutes later, when riley's mom tried calling her back, it was too late. the 22-year-old trying to call 911. >> hello, this is clarke county 911? can anyone hear me? >> reporter: 17 minutes later riley was dead. her mom still frantically texting, "you're making me nervous not answering. are you okay?" the gruesome details about riley's murder were too much for her loved ones to hear. ibarra is an undocumented migrant from venezuela and the case has become a flashpoint in the debate over immigration. he's pleaded not guilty, but late today told the judge he will not take the stand. >> mr. ibarra, do you want to testify? >> no, sir. >> reporter: and david, the prosecution has rested its case today. the defense could also wrap tomorrow. david? >> david: faith abubey, thank you. tonight, u.s. officials confirming that ukraine has fired u.s. long range missiles into russia for the first time. the kremlin now responding with

a possible nuclear threat. ian pannell inside ukraine again tonight. >> reporter: tonight, ukraine firing the first american-made long range missiles into russia. targeting an ammunition store in the bryansk border region, seen in videos circulating online. a u.s. official telling abc news eight missiles, known as atacms, were fired, and two were intercepted. the kremlin appearing to threaten possible use of nuclear weapons in response. but the pentagon saying there are no signs it's preparing to do so. russia already attacking ukraine though day and night. we joined drone hunters trying to intercept attacks. suddenly, an incoming drone. you can hear it in the sky. the team scours the skies and opens fire. these drone hunters are out every night across the city and across the country, as russia sends more and more drones across the border into ukrainian cities. the drone gets away as the team
