precautions. and if you're prepared and you heed the notices that everyone gives, you're in great shape. >> yes, those notices are coming. tonight, we are bracing for the arrival of an atmospheric river that is expected to bring several inches of rain to the north bay. good evening. i'm ama daetz and i'm dan ashley. >> thanks for joining us. we are on storm watch tonight, but as we take a live look now outside from our live cameras all across the bay area, you can see the rain has not arrived. just yet. take a look at these images. >> yes, to time it all out and tell us what we can expect with this series of stormy days ahead. let's get right to abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel. sandhya. yeah. ama and dan. we are in for a strong atmospheric river. it's going to hit tomorrow. and as we take a look at live doppler seven, it is a level two storm. so one of the things that we are noticing is with this atmospheric river, that area of low pressure, which is basically rapidly deepening here known as bomb cyclone, headed towards the pacific northwest. we are going to see the impacts from the atmospheric river, which is that moisture

is a level two on our storm impact scale. heavy rain and flooding likely on the roadways in the north bay tomorrow with those gusty winds. light to moderate rain elsewhere. dan, this is just the start of the stormy pattern. i'll be back with the accuweather seven day forecast coming up. >> boy, it is coming. sandhya, thanks very much. as sandhya mentioned, the north bay is expected to bear the brunt of that atmospheric river. so today. abc seven news reporter leslie brinkley ventured up into sonoma county for a look at how people there are bracing for the rough weather in the north bay. >> this inflatable dam in the russian river near forestville marks the start of the winter rainy season, when forecasts show river flow increasing and the dam is then lowered. last year it was mid-december. this year it's now. >> we're hearing atmospheric river and while we can't anticipate how much water is going to come through, we know a lot of that rain water will be in our river system, and that means a lot of high, fast moving water. the inflatable dam is
5:04 pm
filled with water. it holds 180,000 gallons of water. so we're slowly releasing that water back into the river. >> it will take another 24 hours for the dam to sit completely on the bottom. and if this atmospheric river materializes as forecast, the water could be rising up to where i'm standing by the weekend. a fishery team was also on site to remove underwater cameras and lights to protect the gear from fast moving waters. they're part of the monitoring program that so far has tallied 1200 chinook salmon traveling up river in the last month, a healthy number the russian river could peak at over 24ft by the weekend, and residents of guerneville know the drill. >> clean your gutters. clean your storm drains. get your batteries for your flashlights. charge your radios. charge your cell phone. fill the fuel tank in your vehicle. get ready. when i say we've been through it many times, we've been through it for

a lifetime. >> in the north bay, i'm leslie brinkley, abc seven news. >> work was underway in san leandro today to trim some trees ahead of tomorrow's storm. >> sky seven captured video of the eucalyptus trees along san leandro creek. crews evaluated the health of the trees, then used a low flying helicopter to take away branches from those at risk of falling. stay with abc seven news and abc seven news.com for storm. watch as we track the upcoming level two storm. and don't forget to use the abc seven news bay area app to access the same live doppler seven tools our weather team uses. >> some developing news in san francisco, where a pregnant woman was shot this afternoon. we're told it happened on hollister avenue near ingalls street just after 2 p.m. the fire department says the victim was conscious and breathing when she was taken to the hospital, but no other details are available. again, this is a pregnant woman. no arrests have been made. >> now to new developments out of san mateo county, where today county leaders discussed how to remove the embattled sheriff from her job. abc seven news
5:06 pm
reporter zach fuentes was at the meeting today. he is live with the details of the unanimous decision. zach. reporter. >> yeah, and that unanimous decision means that voters will be able to decide on whether or not the board can remove sheriff christina corpus from her job. the board introduced that ordinance today, and they will event that means the decision will eventually be brought to voters in march. now, we spoke with officials about that decision today and also people who support sheriff corpus. >> our sheriff was elected by the people and the people will make the ultimate decision here. >> emotions ran high from both the public and officials at tuesday's board of supervisors meeting. all of the comments leading to the board's unanimous decision to introduce an ordinance that would send a ballot measure to voters to go ahead and put a charter amendment in front of the voters of san mateo county to go ahead and ask them if they'll give the board authority to remove a sheriff under specific circumstances, as delineated in the charter. all of this coming after an independent audit found the sheriff had an inappropriate
5:07 pm
relationship with an employee and created a culture of intimidation and retaliation within her department. allegations, the sheriff says are not true. we reached out to the sheriff's office for comment and did not hear back in an exclusive interview with dan noyes monday. she had this to say. >> i have done nothing wrong. this is an attack. it's a coup that has been in place for a while by the county executives and the board of supervisors. >> several people in public comment spoke in the sheriff's favor, including redwood city native brian howell, who said he believes details in the report still need to be verified. >> who knows what's real? who's not, what's not real? and i just know sheriff cristina as a person and she is a good person. >> several in public comments said that the report initially did not take in interviews from people who would have supported corpus supervisor ray mueller said it was an independent human resources report that investigated allegations from those who complained. he said that people who want to come forward to speak can, but that
5:08 pm
it doesn't undo the allegations and evidence found against corpus. >> it's kind of like saying we have someone who's presenting evidence of wrongdoing and someone else is upset because they weren't able to provide a reference check that she's a nice person. it still doesn't undo the wrongdoing. >> mueller said one person who did not speak under sworn deposition was corpus herself, something he's still asking her to do. >> we want her to come in under penalty of perjury, respond to the allegations and be held accountable to the words which which she which which she responds to them. >> now, this charter amendment that the voters would approve would sunset in 2028. so in other words, it's focused on this sheriff having the power to remove this sheriff. the board introduced it today. in two weeks, they will officially adopt it. now as our piece was airing, i just got a statement from the sheriff's office. i'm going to read some of it to you. it says in part, today's vote by the board of supervisors was wrongheaded and anti-democratic. it is a mean spirited political scheme. the charter amendment was sunset language that only
5:09 pm
applies to me is an effort to go around the voters to try to unseat me. i will fight it tooth and nail. i'm not going anywhere. that is the statement from sheriff cristina corpus, a part of it that we just got right now. right now live in san mateo. zach fuentes, abc seven news. >> all right. it continues to develop. thanks very much, zach. well, san jose is also going to hold a special election, this one to replace city council member omar torres. just about 45 minutes ago, the city council approved a special election following a lengthy debate that included public comment. mayor matt mehan supported a special election rather than the council appointment of a replacement, saying it should be up to the people. torres resigned after he was charged with child molestation. the special election could be held in early april, with a potential runoff at the end of june. >> happening tomorrow. the new transition team for san francisco mayor elect daniel lurie is scheduled to have its first meeting. >> that's where the mix of ten co-chairs and advisors will begin. the unofficial onboarding process. to get lurie ready for
5:10 pm
public office. >> abc seven news reporter monica madden talked to two of the co-chairs and joins us with more. monica. >> yeah, as you all know, daniel lurie, mayor elect daniel lurie promised to bring that world class team of leaders. so now we're getting an idea of who might be involved based on his transition team, possibly later in the long run. the mix of tec, nonprofit and governmental leaders all hoping to be part of the shift in san francisco's city leadership that lurie promised to voters. >> we're coming from different backgrounds, have different areas of expertise. >> former san francisco fire chief joanne hayes-white is one of seven people tapped to help mayor elect lurie get ready for office. >> he's a problem solver and he knows that he doesn't have all the answers, so that's why he's putting a really well-rounded team together. >> openai ceo sam altman is one of the biggest names of tech players on the team, along with former twitter cfo ned siegel, mission asset fund ceo jose quinonez, sf democratic party chair nancy tung and police commander paul yep. lastly, michael tubbs of stockton knows
5:11 pm
a thing or two about being an underdog as one of the youngest mayors ever elected to office. how is that framing your advice to lurie? >> embracing being new, embracing being able to ask questions? because i think a lot of things people take for granted what i found by simply asking why or why do we do it like this? or can you show me the policy? or can you show me the results? we're able to change a lot of things because things were just happening because it was the way it was always done, and not necessarily because it was the best way to do something. >> the team ready to collaborate. >> usually those conversations are siloed and the tech people talk to tech people and the government people talk to the government people and nonprofit people talk to nonprofit people. >> hayes-white is hoping to break down city hall's silos to improve things like public safety response. >> the fentanyl deaths were down quite significantly, but still way too many. so i think one of the things that we're really going to look at and that i'm going to recommend looking at, is this crossover that needs to exist between departments. it's instead of working in a silo that, you know, the police are involved, the fire department is involved, the sheriff's
5:12 pm
department potentially, and department of public health, take a look at that. those relationships and see if there's something that we can do a little bit more efficiently, all with the goal of helping lurie execute his promise to voters, making san francisco safer, cleaner and friendlier to business. >> we're going to do everything in our power to make sure that san francisco is once again considered and is a world class american city. >> now, sometimes we see members of the transition committee actually end up joining the administration. and hayes white said that she would be open to that if she were asked michael tubbs. however, he is running for lieutenant governor in 2026, so he would probably be off the table. and so far, no timeline yet of when we might hear more of the full time picks like chief of staff. so we'll be eagerly waiting for those announcements. >> but obviously making a lot of decisions. >> yes, absolutely. >> thanks, monica. >> coming up, a sad reality as muslim students across the bay area and state talk about the harassment and discrimination they've experienced on their college campuses, this year. and we'll show you about the new

5:17 pm
that islamophobia is normal, that the casual life of a muslim entails islamophobia. almost every level. and so we ask the larger community to acknowledge this reality and work at undoing this normalization of islamophobia. >> these students worry how islamophobia may only increase under a new presidency, but they hope, by raising awareness with this report, change can come and the community can protect those at risk. >> there's definitely uncertainty about what the future will bring, and justifiably so. but at the same time, we do have hope in our allies. we have hope in our community, in our institutions, in organizations like care, who are doing amazing work to protect our rights. and we hope to keep fighting the good fight for a safe and inclusive society for all in the south bay. >> dustin dorsey, abc seven news. >> all right. brace yourself. coming up. we're continuing to get ready for a series of stormy days. here's a live look outside right now. the rain has not arrived just yet. after the break, we'll check back in with meteorologist sandhya patel for the
