falling down a 60-foothill. and if you have an iphone, a new an urgent security update tonight. america strong here. the bride walking down the aisle. and the two people she asked to join her. this is remarkable. good evening and we begin tonight with these two major storm systems on both coasts. in the northeast, the tornado threat as we come on tonight, as the region braces for the heaviest rain in months. and possibly dangerous flash flooding, given how dry is ground is. and in the west at this hour, the storm there turning deadly tonight. what's called a bomb cyclone and an atmospheric river. already slamming the pacific northwest. they're bracing for flooding, landslides, winds up to 70 miles per hour. powerful winds already bringing down countless trees in bell bellevue, washington. in seattle, a massive tree crashing onto a commuter bus.

hundreds of thousands without power tonight. and in the east at this hour, a tornado warning in the pittsburgh area. this time lapse right here showing the city as the front moves in. the storm about to arrive from new york city to boston, as well. let's get right to meteorologist lee goldberg from wabc here in new york. lee? >> reporter: david, we are rain gear ready for a change here in the northeast. the rain is approaching the d.c. area. and we're going to get heavy rain into new york city after midnight. that means a rough morning commute. very heavy rain, gusty winds gets to boston by late morning. this storm isn't taking the traditional route offshore. we've got snow in the catskills and poconos, the mountains of west virginia could see up to a foot and a half of snowfall. one to two inches along the coast. we need three months of rain to break the drought. out west, it's a powerhouse storm. it's a rare, high risk flood event in northern california, from eureka to fort bragg. it could mean rockslides and wind gusts of 70 miles an hour.

one to two feet of additional snow for the mountains of northern california. going to be a rough 72 hours ahead for both coasts. david? >> david: lee, thank you. the northeast bracing tonight, as lee said, while the images coming in from the west at this hour are devastating. trees coming down, turning deadly already. one woman killed in her home in the shower. mola lenghi in sonoma county, california, tonight. >> reporter: tonight, hundreds of thousands without power as a massive bomb cyclone slams the west. power lines setting trees on fire in king county, washington. first responders racing to dozens of calls across the seattle area. at least two killed by falling trees, including a woman who authorities say was killed inside this home in bellevue. a massive tree practically swallowing this city bus. another one crushing this fire department vehicle. this car completely flattened. >> take a look at how tiny that space is. we're told that the person that

was inside this car miraculously survived. it is truly a stroke of luck. >> reporter: in the northern california mountains, howling winds and more than a foot of snow stranding drivers. authorities shutting a stretch of interstate 5 south of the oregon border because it's just too treacherous. and flooding rains at lower elevations. some areas could get up to a foot and a half by friday. well, david, we're expecting this rain to continue for at least another 24 hours here in northern california. before a very slight letup, and then it will pick back up again and continue to pound the region through the weekend, david. >> david: just an extraordinary scene behind you, mola, thank you. to the other news, and tonight, the verdict in the trial of an undocumented migrant from venezuela, accused of murdering nursing student laken riley. guilty on all counts. tonight here, her family right there as the judge delivered the verdict. abc's faith abubey from georgia now. >> reporter: gasps and sobs inside a georgia courtroom today as a judge delivered swift justice for laken riley.

>> count one, malice murder. i find the defendant guilty. >> reporter: jose ibarra -- an undocumented migrant from venezuela -- guilty on all ten counts for brutally murdering the 22-year-old nursing student. this gut-wrenching moment played in court, showing riley's family learning she was dead after she disappeared during a run on the university of georgia campus. >> my precious daughter was attacked, beaten, and shown no mercy. >> reporter: prosecutors pointing to this video showing ibarra out hunting for women when he attacked riley on a trail. leaving a thumbprint on riley's phone and his dna under her fingernail. scratches on ibarra's body proving riley fought for her life. >> she marked him for everyone to see. she marked him for you to see. >> reporter: riley's murder added fuel to a bitter debate over immigration. but the trial focused squarely on the evidence. today, her loved ones asked for the maximum sentence.

>> i am completely disgusted having to even look and be in the same room as him. that predator is inhumane and is the epitome of evil. >> he showed no mercy on laken when she was begging for her life. there's no end to the pain and suffering he inflicted on our family and our friends. >> reporter: the sentence? life behind bars. >> i sentence you to life without the possibility of parole. >> reporter: and david, ibarra will serve that life sentence here in georgia. david? >> david: faith abubey, thank you. in new york city tonight, yet another horrific attack, this time, what appears to be a random knife attack on the upper west side, on columbus and 86th street. a popular area for shoppers. tonight here, the surveillance capturing images of the suspect. here's our senior investigative correspondent aaron katersky. >> reporter: tonight, new york city police are hunting for this man, who slashed a tourist in the face in a seemingly unprovoked attack. the 55-year-old visiting from denmark, seen here walking with another person on west 86th street near columbus

avenue -- a heavily trafficed area on the upper west side -- just after 10:00 a.m. police say the attacker ran up from behind and slashed him in the face and eastern, causing a deep cut. he was taken to the hospital and is stable tonight. the apparently random attack comes just two days after a fatal stabbing spree elsewhere in manhattan. 51-year-old ramon rivera is charged with three counts of first degree murder. police say you can see rivera here putting on a hoodie and gloves before pulling a knife from his backpack, leaving a construction worker, a man fishing, and a woman outside the united nations dead. these attacks come on the brink of the holiday season when millions visit. but violent crime in the borough is down significantly, including a 14% drop in murders. i just talked to an nypd source, david, they're looking for the suspect. they have not identified him yet, and it appears he acted without provocation. david? >> david: aaron katersky, thank you. we turn next tonight to president-elect donald trump's embattled attorney general nominee matt gaetz, on capitol hill today. vice president-elect jd vance e

courting him to meters with senators. while in the house today, the closed door meeting of the ethics committee on the fate of that ethics report involving gaetz and alleged sexual misconduct involving a 17-year-old. gaetz denies wrongdoing. and what republicans and democrats said when they emerged from that meeting. here's jonathan karl. >> reporter: attorney general nominee matt gaetz huddling behind closed doors today with vice president-elect jd vance and some of the republican senators who could decide his fate. >> senator's been giving me a lot of good advice. >> reporter: meanwhile, over in the house, the bipartisan ethics committee held its own closed door meeting, weighing whether to release their report on gaetz and allegations of sexual misconduct and illicit drug use. after a two-hour meeting, the republican chairman announced the report would not be released -- at least not now. >> there was not an agreement by the committee to release the report. >> reporter: democrats on the committee are furious, saying they want the report out, but the republicans refused.

>> i do not want the american public or anyone else to think mr. guest's characterization of what transpired today would be some sort of indication that the committee had unanimity or consensus on this issue to not release the report. >> reporter: matt gaetz has denied all wrongdoing. but several republican senators have expressed concerns. >> i was shocked by the nomination, given the many allegations, but that's why it's important that the senate go through its process. >> reporter: senator lindsey graham, who met with gaetz today, says gaetz deserves the benefit of the doubt. >> no rubber stamps and no lynch mob. he will be held to account in the confirmation process. >> reporter: a transition official said gaetz's meetings with republican senators were, quote, productive, and that he

listened to what they had to say about the confirmation process. but the trump team is prepared to play hardball. one senior trump adviser telling me they will work to end the political careers of any republican who votes against the president-elect's nominees, saying, quote, if you are on the wrong side of the vote, you're buying yourself a primary. that is all. and there's a guy named elon musk who is going to finance it." the house ethics commit me is going to meet again in december to discuss the report, but the members are bitterly divided, and it's clear that republicans on the committee are just not interested in releasing the report. david? >> david: quite a day on both sides of the capitol. jon karl tonight, thank you. now, to the string of home explosions in three different parts of the country, from tennessee to ohio to michigan. stephanie ramos with the images tonight. >> reporter: three separate home explosions rocking communities across the country tonight. flames and smoke billowing from this home in tennessee.

fire crews saying debris flew nearly 150 yards in all directions. the home reduced to rubble. flames tearing through what's left of the roof, knocked off the foundation. no one was injured, but officials fear other homes in the area could be on fire. the cause is now under investigation. overnight in michigan, just north of detroit, a suspected gas leak causing this two-story condo to explode. doorbell video showing that loud, fiery blast. debris seen flying across the street. two adults seriously injured. earlier that same day, investigators reviewing how this home in the town of bethel, an hour outside cincinnati, exploded. two people were killed, another injure d and treated for seriou burns. neighbors say an hvac technician was working on the furnace before the explosion. david, while the cause of two of the explosions are under investigation, natural gas line leaks are rare, but extremely dangerous. as the weather changes, and many

people look to turn on their heat, experts say make sure you have a carbon mon no, ma'am side desector in every common area. david? >> david: stephanie, thank you. now to the war in ukraine tonight, and this evening, reports ukraine has fired more long range missiles into russia, this time, missiles from the uk, as both sides try to hold onto territory before any new push to end this war. ian pannell inside ukraine. >> reporter: tonight, a new escalation. videos circulating online appear to show massive explosions rocking russia's kursk region. "the wall street journal" reporting ukraine launching at least ten british-made storm shadow cruise missiles. ukraine not commenting. ukraine fighting to hold on to a small patch of russian territory it holds in kursk to use as leverage. but russian forces, assisted by thousands of north korean soldiers, are slowly pushing them back. the u.s. in another policy reversal now allowing ukraine to

use anti-personnel landmines to try to slow the russians down. and amid growing fears about russian retaliation, the u.s. embassy in kyiv closing down for much of the day. we were given exclusive access to the secret command center of the elite ukrainian khartia brigade in kharkiv. here drone operators launch attacks on russian troops. >> for ukrainians, we do not have a choice. we have to fight, because we are fighting for our land and for our way of life, for our freedom. >> reporter: david, both sides are now slugging it out, just across the border into russia, in a fight til the death. but they're also trying to take and hold as much land as possible before president trump takes over and forces them to come together at the negotiating table. david? >> david: ian pannell tonight, thank you. back here in the u.s. now, and to a case that shocked the nation 30 years ago. susan smith, convicted of drowning her two small sons. three decades later, she's

asking for parole, and what the parole board decided today. here's victor oquendo. >> reporter: it was a case that shocked the nation. a mother convicted of drowning her two young sons. and tonight, susan smith has been denied parole after tearfully making her case for freedom. >> i know that what i did was horrible. and i would give anything if i could go back and change it. >> reporter: in october 1994, smith rolled her car into a south carolina lake while her 3-year-old mon michael and 14-month-old alex were strapped into their car seats. smith then lying to authorities, saying she had been carjacked by a black man who drove away, pleading for her sons to be returned safely. >> i just want to say to my babies that your mama loves you so much. >> reporter: later, confessing to letting her car go into that lake. today, her ex-husband and father of the two boys asking the board to keep her behind bars.

the bay area. >> this storm measures a two on our exclusive abc seven news storm impact scale. that means it's considered moderate. the north bay getting the worst of it. it's been a steady downpour throughout the day so far in sebastopol and other parts of sonoma county. >> people making their way around downtown san francisco had to dodge puddles everywhere. today, most people seem prepared for this rain. we spotted lots of umbrellas south of market around mid-morning as the rain began to fall. today's downpours are getting the headlines, but the wind is a major issue as well. check out these strong gusts. blowing winds or trees and snapping old glory around today on the peninsula. fortunately, no reports of any major damage so far. wind is a big part of the story along the coast in pacifica, and we have a crew live there and in the north bay bringing you team coverage. yeah, you can see zach and cornell are braving the elements. >> zach in particular at this point, and we'll check in with them momentarily, but we'll start with abc seven spencer christian. for more on where the storm is hitting hardest right now. hi, spencer. >> okay, larry and kristen.
