>> good evening. thank you for joining us, susan smith once called the most hated mom in america today, giving her first ever chance at parole. the notorious mother of two was convicted of killing her young sons by driving them into a lake 30 years ago. now making her case for freedom. >> case number 34, susan smith. >> a dramatic and emotional scene playing out in south carolina today. susan smith, who hasn't spoken publicly in 30 years. >> first of all, i want to say how very sorry i am. >> pleading. she served enough time for murdering her two young sons by letting her car sink with them, strapped inside, and that she deserves to be set free. >> i would give anything if i could go back and change it. and i love michael and alice with all my heart. >> smith serving a life sentence. but under south carolina law, is up for parole after 30 years in prison. making

strapped in their car seats. >> i've been on the highway in this same area with my children at that exact same time. it just is too close to your heart. >> susan and her husband appeared together, pleading for their son's return. >> your mom and dad are going to be right here waiting on you when you get home. i love you so much. >> to the public, it was compelling stuff. to the authorities. they had questions early on behind the scenes. >> law enforcement is focusing more on the discrepancies. and little by little, her story was unraveling. >> nine days after the boys went missing, investigators confronted susan and the 23 year old confessed. everyone down, please. >> right now! >> susan smith has been arrested and will be charged with two counts of murder in connection with the deaths of her children,

michael, three, and alexander, 14 months. >> i almost dropped to my knees. i mean, did he say kill? how could she have two children and do them like that? >> this was a stunning moment. the woman who's on tv calling for help. she's the one who did this. >> there's an audible gasp, a silence of how can this woman go from victim to alleged murderer in just an instance in her handwritten confession, susan wrote that on the night of october 25th, she didn't want to live anymore. >> she detailed how she was in love with someone very much, but he didn't love her and never would. she says she decided to kill herself and her sons because she didn't want them to grow up without a mom. both to john d long lake. got out of the car, put it in neutral, and let it roll down the boat ramp into the water with her boys inside. tommy polk, who spoke at today's

parole hearing, was the lead prosecutor in the case. >> i tried a lot of horrible cases, but the media component just took everything you would normally have in a case and put it on steroids. >> for months, the focus of the nation was on this tiny town hitting a fever pitch just days before trial when investigators reenacted the crime. at trial, prosecutors played that reenactment in her testimony from one of the divers described seeing a small hand against a car window at the bottom of the lake. the jury also heard from susan's ex-lover, tom findlay. >> you have someone saying, yeah, i was in this relationship with her and broke it off because i didn't want the responsibility of children. i think it gives her the intent >> susan smith's main defense, her mental health. >> they focused a lot on her

background, on what had happened to her as a child. being molested, being troubled and tried to portray her as something other than a monster. >> the jury found susan guilty after just two hours of deliberation. >> there was a tough psychological component going here. people didn't want to believe that a mother could do that. >> now 53, susan has been behind bars more than half of her life and records shows she has not been a model prisoner. >> she says i wanted have oral sex with you. >> alfred rowe was a guard at a prison in columbia when susan was an inmate there. >> when i first met susan, she was kind of friendly. she was well-spoken, polite, confident. >> they had an affair back in

2000. according to the court records, she also had sex with a second guard. both men lost their jobs. the second man went to jail for three months, and rowe got five years probation. susan was ultimately transferred to a different prison. >> i truly regret what i done. she has shown, through her abuse of the institutional rules and regulations, that she's not ready to join society and be a law abiding citizen again. she doesn't deserve parole yet. >> records also show at least three instances of drug use in being sanctioned for mutilation. but she had no infractions for ten years until this past august, when, according to the south carolina department of corrections, she got into trouble for speaking to a filmmaker who deposited an undisclosed amount of money into her prison account. >> why should this board think that if we grant you parole, that you're going to go out and

>> welcome back. the murder of 22 year old nursing student laken riley. shocked the country and became an immigration flashpoint. the trial of the undocumented migrant accused of ending riley's life today reaching a close and a rapid verdict. here's abc's faith abubey. >> these are the last moments of 22 year old laken riley's life. the georgia nursing student going out for a morning run on february 22nd. the security camera footage capturing her as she leisurely jogged on a trail on the university of georgia campus, having no idea the terror that awaited her. >> my precious daughter was

attacked and beaten and shown no mercy. she fought for her life and dignity and to save herself from being brutally raped. >> today, her mother, allison phillips, pleading no mercy for the man on trial for her daughter's murder. >> this sick, twisted and evil coward showed no regard for lake and her human life. >> prosecutors say 26 year old venezuelan national jose antonio ibarra, seen here lurking at a nearby apartment complex that day, was hunting for a female victim before killing riley. >> what does he do? right there at 754, he is ducking down. >> ibarra pleaded not guilty, but in the athens, georgia courtroom, gasps after the judge delivered his verdict. >> count one. malice murder. i find the defendant guilty. >> the judge, taking just minutes to determine him guilty on all ten counts, including felony murder, aggravated

assault and tampering with evidence. ibarra, expressionless, was sentenced to life without parole. >> the way in which jose ibarra was sentenced means that he really will not see the outside of jail. life in prison without the possibility of parole in georgia legitimately means life in prison. >> the murder trial captivated the nation. ibarra, an undocumented migrant who entered the u.s. in 2022. >> lincoln riley's brutal murder was a lightning rod for the political discourse of immigration. the case, covered intensely by cable news and podcasts. >> laken riley, who was, of course, killed by an illegal. >> this is something that not only could have been stopped, but should have been stopped. >> this is one of the biden administration border monsters. >> during closing arguments, prosecutors sticking to the evidence underscoring video and dna that they say proves ibarra was the only possible attacker in this case. >> the physical evidence the video evidence and the digital evidence combined twist this very powerful knot that this

defendant cannot get out of law enforcement was able to triangulate where lake and riley was based on her cell phone, as well as jose ibarra, and put them nearly next to each other. >> mr. ibarra, acting on our advice. >> defense attorneys calling the evidence circumstantial, even suggesting ibarra's own brother committed the crime. >> it's more than possible that one brother's dna would get on another brother's clothes. in fact, it's probable the day of her murder, just moments before she left for her jog, riley texted her mother, who wept as their final text messages were read out loud in court. >> says good morning, about to go for a run. if you're free to talk. >> but prosecutors say minutes later, when riley's mom tried calling her back, it was too late. the 22 year old, fighting for her life and trying to call 911. >> hello, this is clark county, nine one. can you hear me?

>> 17 minutes later, riley was dead. prosecutors say ibarra's fingerprints were later found on her phone. at the time, her mother was still frantically trying to get in touch with her. >> 11:47 a.m. incoming text from her mother says, please call me. >> i'm worried sick about you. >> police say riley died from the combination of blunt force trauma and asphyxia. the first responder who found her testifying as audio from his body camera played a university. >> i found her, ma'am. >> ma'am, ma'am. oh, immediately. >> she's not breathing. starting cpr now. >> 12345. video evidence shows ibarra dumping clothes the day of the murder. when authorities questioned him he had visible injuries. >> i noticed on his right arm his bicep. there was a scratch, which i identified as a

potential defensive wound on his left arm. he had a forearm scratch that was very similar. >> prosecutors saying those scratches show riley fought for her life. >> she marked him for everyone to see. she marked him for you to see. >> a forensic expert testified that dna evidence from ibarra was also found under riley's fingernails. >> the match is 10 million times more probable than a coincidental match to an unrelated person. >> ibarra, who initially was in new york before coming to georgia, had previous run ins with the law for months. the case has been a rallying cry for critics of the biden administration's border policy. >> laken riley, president elect trump invoking laken riley's name at the republican national convention, yet another american life was stolen by a criminal alien set free by this administration and posting photos of a private meeting in march with her mother and stepfather on his campaign website. >> the case even spilling into the latest state of the union
