for all that is you. pouring rain and howling winds battering the bay area tonight as a powerful atmospheric river takes aim at our state. >> this morning it just started pouring and it hasn't stopped. >> right now, the north bay is being hit the hardest. trees down, roads flooded and there's rising concern for the russian river on the coast. >> dangerous waves are pummeling the shore in spots that just finished rebuilding from past winter's devastation. and in the sierra, steady snow making for slick roads and excitement for the slopes. it gets hectic, but it's why we live here. >> day one of our first big

storm of the season. and there's plenty more to come tonight on abc seven news at 11. >> always live on abc seven news starts right now. >> the intense rain and rising flood risk in the north bay tonight as our first major storm of the season slams the bay area. significant rain totals in santa rosa and this wet and windy weather is far from over. good evening. >> i'm ama daetz and i'm dan ashley. thanks for joining us. a powerful atmospheric river is parked off our coast between the rain, the wind and the dangerous wave, just about the entire bay area is feeling the effects. >> and we have team coverage from one end of the bay area to the other. but first, let's get to abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel, who is tracking this storm. sandhya. yeah. >> ama and dan. this atmospheric river is a strong one and it is delivering a drenching a half a foot to a foot. the drenching in the north bay. take a look at live doppler seven right now and you can see that steady moisture feed continues as the atmospheric river stalls out

over the north bay. we are seeing pounding rain across mill valley, stinson beach, muir woods as we widen the picture here, flood advisories going, small streams and creeks. road flooding has already occurred in the east bay. right now we are seeing some moderate pockets of rain right around orinda taking you into street level radar tracking. this moisture headed towards walnut creek at 1118 tonight. so be prepared for that. from san francisco to the peninsula. steady rain is coming in right now, and as you will notice, this is a level two storm. that bomb cyclone bombed out right over the northeast pacific, tying the record set back in 2021. we're getting the atmospheric river and it's not done yet as we go into midnight. still some heavy rain falling 5 a.m. you're going to see some wet roadways for the commute, and then the rain line shifts to the north at noontime, still going strong. the winds 50 miles an hour. in oakland hills, we've seen 70 mile an hour wind gusts. it's a level two for overnight tonight. flooding rain in the

north bay. light to moderate rain elsewhere. windy, dangerous surf. we have that flood watch for the north bay until 4 a.m. saturday. flooding will continue to be a possibility in this area. wind advisory for that same area and the san francisco bay shoreline until 6 a.m. we're talking about gusts to 50 miles an hour more downed trees and power lines expected. occidental in the north bay, almost 11in of rain. venado over nine inches of rain. a half a foot. in healdsburg. you can see the rainfall really drops off heading down towards san carlos. only eight hundredths of an inch. it's certainly a wet view from our exploratorium camera. i'll be back with a full look at the forecast, which does include dangerous surf. >> dan okay sandy, thanks a lot. 11in of rain. >> wow. >> where you can see the results of those impressive rain totals on north bay roads tonight. lots of flooded streets and downed trees sent at least one person to the hospital. abc7 news the north bay is in for several days of intense rain as the weather pattern fueled by this

atmospheric river and abc seven news reporter j.r. stone is live in santa rosa, where the rain is still coming down. j.r. >> well, it certainly is. dan, we have been out here for six straight hours and the rain has not stopped during that time. it's not coming down as hard as it was just 15 or 20 minutes ago. but the wind has certainly picked up in the last hour. a massive tree fell on this home in forestville, an unincorporated community just outside of santa rosa. one person was taken to the hospital, but officials say they will survive this morning. >> it just started pouring and it hasn't stopped. >> constant rain here in sonoma county. drivers we talked with are well aware of the many areas that flooded wednesday and well aware of the very slick conditions. >> i don't like it. this morning i actually almost got in a car accident. >> some we spoke with said they would have liked to stay inside, but they didn't have a choice. >> i'm up here visiting my mom to help take care of her. she's

in her 90s and i actually live in the east bay, and now i'm going back down when it's the worst weather. >> you're driving in this. >> i'm driving, but i have to go back because i got to work tomorrow. >> the falling rain was too much for this tree that fell onto power lines in a neighborhood near 101 and state route 12, in santa rosa. nearby homes were left in the dark. some, though, battled the elements with the entire family. hey, sometimes you got to get those essentials. >> you need to go to costco and get food and toilet paper. we drove nice and slow to make sure we were safe. >> i guess grocery shopping is a little easier when the kids are excited to get soaked. >> i think it's fun in the rain. i like it because it's all wet and i like jumping in puddles. >> did you get wet at all? yeah. really wet. i'm wet right now. certainly making the best out of a very wet situation. back out here, live in santa rosa. you can see that rain that is coming down right now, and it is being

pushed by the strong winds. really the concern going forward is the fact that here in santa rosa it rained all day long. it has rained all night long and rain is in the forecast going forward. you saw in some of that video those trees that came down. there is concern that more of those trees could fall in the coming days, and hopefully they won't fall on any live power lines or people in the area. reporting live in santa rosa, j.r stone, abc seven news. >> okay. j.r. thank you so much. and happening now p-g-and-e's crews are working to restore power with outages all over the bay area tonight. this is a live look at the outage map. so the biggest outages are in orange one in pleasant hill and another near tomales bay. p-g-and-e's is not sharing an estimated time for power to be restored because crews are busy with other emergencies, and this is a live look at san francisco international airport, where hundreds of flights have been delayed and more than 60 canceled altogether because of the weather. >> the longest delays were for inbound flights, some stretching to 2.5 hours, maybe even longer

than that. we heard over three. in some instances, departures were facing delays of about an hour. the wind is behind most of the problems. abc seven news was at the airport today and watched this delta airlines plane take off. watch now as it sort of drifts to the side. you can see it move just after it lifts off the ground. >> well, strong waves and wind are slamming parts of the coast tonight. pacifica saw strong gusts and really rough waves, with a 20 foot sinkhole opening along the seawall in capitola. the weather is bringing up memories of devastating storms that ripped up the wharf in recent years. abc seven news reporter lauren martinez shows us how preparations are different this time around. >> dan and ama we've seen dangerous waves and flooding impact capitola village and nearby areas in the past. tonight it's been windy, but overall quiet. residents tell me they're ready for when the rain comes. >> i was just walking the dogs up. i could i could hear the ocean get more and more intense. >> marcy carl lives a block up from the beach in capitola.

>> the last couple of years, it's been we've had some very big storms and that have caused some pretty intense damage. i'm expecting that to happen again this year. >> capitola officials say for the past three years, they've experienced whiplash when it comes to high surf damage and coastal flooding. the iconic wharf stands 20ft above the water, but was destroyed by a battering of waves closed since early 2023, the wharf reopened just this past september. >> i come down here probably three times a week at least. >> a longtime resident, dennis gillis, goes to capitola village frequently during the week. he said he's prepared for stormy weather. >> we've got a large generator that can power three homes with uh, plenty of grab bags for the family for the bars and restaurants along the esplanade. >> it was business as usual on wednesday evening last winter, many were hit with high waves and flooding. the sandbar repaired their floors in early 2023, only to have them buckle again by december. zelda's

installed hurricane doors in the back of their restaurant in preparation for the next big one. >> hopefully, there won't be any flooding. it's just going to be wet, hunkered down all weekend long. >> capitola officials are prepared to be on high alert for storms until march in capitola. lauren martinez abc seven news. >> the state office of emergency services pre-positioned resources in seven counties, including napa, because of the potential for debris flows from the burn scars. all the trees and grass that were lost. this includes strike teams and urban search and rescue crews, incident managers and a helicopter as well. now the weather is expected to be calmer in the pacific northwest tomorrow. thank goodness. after this powerful storm just tore through that region. the bomb cyclone caused major damage in washington state and oregon. two people were killed by falling trees. nearly half a million people in washington are without power. and we're hearing from a woman who is really fortunate to be alive after a tree crashed

right into her bedroom. >> my whole dresser is gone. i had a bunch of interior design stuff on the walls. i'm a single mom with two kids, and i'm pretty sure we're not going to have a place to live for a whil. >> washington's next wave is expected to roll through on friday, though it's not as powerful as this last one up in the sierra. >> steady snow is making for slippery driving. chains are required on 8-80 tonight. reporter devin trubey from our sister station in sacramento is in truckee, where people are hunkered down and waiting for ski season crowds. >> my power is out. so yes, i am stocking up. >> buff wendt was one of almost 8000 truckee donner public utility district customers without power early wednesday. she and other residents are stocking up try and stay out of safeway when they come into tow. >> for sure. >> the town of truckee is not

just bracing for a storm, but the droves of skiers and snowboarders headed up to the start of the season and upcoming thanksgiving break. >> we embrace people coming up, so we're all for it. it gets hectic, but it's why we live here. >> the office of emergency services for the town of truckee says law enforcement and public works are fully staffed for the weekend storm, and travelers calling this the first larger snow of the season. >> it's been some really high winds, and so those high winds have resulted into high fire dangers on the nevada side of the border. and so because of that, nv energy has issued a public safety outage management, also known as a psps, on the california side, because of the high fire risk we here in truckee and in this area are at the whim of electrical power coming from the nevada side. and so we're under a storm warning, is what they call it. >> truckee donner public utility is asking folks to prepare for 1 or 2 days without power. devin trubey, abc seven. >> turmoil in the sheriff's

>> that scandal surrounding the san mateo county sheriff's office is still a hot topic tonight. the city county, the county's independent civilian advisory commission, discussed the scathing independent report released last week. that report has the board of supervisors looking to oust the sheriff, christina corpus. one of the commissioners had this assessment of the sheriff's behavior. >> you have time to do news interviews, but you could not make time to meet with the independent investigator. so you had plenty of time. you know, and the response was, you are busy as sheriff. i have watched on the news like at least four different interviews. so if you have time to do interviews, you

should have time to talk to them. independent investigator or be responsive to us. >> corpus has denied any wrongdoing. a member of the board of supervisors plans to give an update on the situation tomorrow afternoon. >> new at 11. the department of justice has asked a judge to break up google by forcing it to sell its chrome web browser. in a filing late tonight, the doj also asked for restrictions to prevent google's android from favoring its own search engine. if the judge rules in favor of the department, google would be forced to sell chrome within six months. but the company would likely appeal that decision. the request comes after a judge found google had illegally maintained a search engine monopoly. >> tonight, the san francisco city hall is lit up in the colors of the transgender flag in honor of transgender day of remembrance. every year, activists come together to memorialize people whose lives were lost in acts of anti-transgender violence. tonight, people gathered outside city hall before marching to san francisco. lgbt center on market

street. >> the union representing striking hotel workers in san francisco, has announced employees from two additional hotels will take strike votes tomorrow. if authorized, 435 employees from the saint regis hotel and w san francisco could walk off the job at any time today. thousands of striking workers marriott hotels marched through downtown, marking two months since the strike began. they are demanding better wages, better staffing and affordable health care. >> and it's really disappointing. it's really disrespectful that after two months of being out on strike, they still have failed to make the commitment to maintain our union medical benefits. >> hyatt released a new statement today saying it's willing to continue bargaining in good faith. hilton and marriott have both said they are negotiating with the union. >> happening tomorrow, cal maritime's planned merger with cal poly san luis obispo will go before the cal state trustee's board for final vote. the school, located in vallejo, is

patient, though. while they got properly dressed for the conditions outside, which are quite brutal. >> that's my favorite part. how? they're just waiting around, waiting to be kitted out with their little hoods on. it's so cute. yes. all right, let's talk more about the weather. they're going to need those rain jackets and so are you. >> yeah, it's really coming down, sandhya. >> yeah, it absolutely is. dan and ama and it's coming down in the sierra as well. take a look at this live picture. this is snow falling right now. although the snow levels are starting to rise and it is switching over to rain at some of the higher elevations there. it is definitely snowing at the highest elevations in the sierra and northern california mountains. as you look at live doppler seven, moisture feed continues here is the atmospheric river. you can see it stretches for thousands of miles. we are talking about an area of low pressure that is off the pacific northwest coast. that's the bomb cyclone that occurred last night. there's a secondary low that's forming on this, and that's going to come in later on in the week. but for

the time being, we are tracking some pockets of downpours on live doppler seven. so we're going to get you in closer right now. and you will notice right around point san pedro road, san rafael, highway 101, some heavier rain falling at this hour. we do have a flood watch for the russian river at hopland as they are expecting flooding by friday at noon. it's expected to be minor, but 15 foot is the flood stage. make sure you evacuate if you're going to be in that area and officials tell you to get out. east bay, antioch. you're now starting to see the rain. you haven't had anything measurable up until now. san francisco, richmond district sunset district, steady rain falling all the way down the peninsula, daly city and now the santa cruz mountains. also starting to pick up a little more rain. so how much rain are we talking about? over a half a foot has fallen in santa rosa so far. more than two inches in san rafael. you will notice it's a third in san francisco, but only a few hundredths out towards oakland. concord, hayward, los gatos, livermore, san jose.

nothing measurable in the rain shadow of the santa cruz mountains, but that's going to change. winds continuing to pick up and remain gusty as we head into the midnight. hour. 8 a.m. still over 40 mile an hour. wind gusts along the coast. not as strong as they were today. we had those gusts up to 70 for some of our higher terrain. 7:00 tomorrow. still breezy to windy and certainly the winds are kicking up the surf. this is a live view from santa cruz high surf advisory going until 6 a.m. friday. right now, 19 footers at bodega bay point arena, 21ft waves. so dangerous swimming and surfing conditions with those big breakers. also, a beach hazard statement for the northern monterey bay moderate northwest swell, bringing a risk of rip currents and sneaker waves. so use caution if you're going to be at the coast 50s and 60s on those temperatures right now on our storm impact scale, this is a level two overnight flooding rain in the north bay, light to moderate rain for other parts of the bay area. certainly windy with the dangerous surf. so we go hour by hour. tomorrow

morning's commute will include pockets of rain at 5 a.m. notice, the heaviest at 8 a.m. is in the north bay. the rest of you, you're looking at clouds, scattered showers. that rain line is shifting northward. that atmospheric river at noontime, and then scattered showers from time to time through the evening. but don't be fooled by all of this, because by friday, this whole thing is going to be coming through the entire bay area, and the rainfall will add up through friday at midnight. we are talking about a few hundred south and east bay all the way to up almost five inches in ukiah. now we add on this saturday night and look at what we're seeing rainfall measuring in inches an inch and a half in san jose, almost that in concord, an inch, and a third in oakland, san francisco, just over an inch and a half. we're talking about over a half a foot of rain, additional rain and santa rosa close to four inches. winter storm warning extended until 4 a.m. tomorrow. additional 2 to 5in of snow. snow levels rising 5 to 6000ft. expect slick travel, chain
