nearly taking out this house in this neighborhood. and here in sonoma county we have seen about a half of a foot of rain, in a 24 hour period. overnight , winds up to 98 miles an hour, up to a foot of rain, slamming the pacific northwest. the powerful system known as a bomb cyclone, was one of the strongest in years. this morning, over 350,000 people, waking up without power. >> sound clip: everything's closed down. >> reporter: wind gusts reaching 60 miles an hour, caused wide spread damage throughout seattle area, windshield, smashed. this car flattened and the driver survived miraculously. two people killed by fallen tree, including a woman inside of this home. and, in northern california, wind says up to 58 miles an hour, sent this tree crashing on to a home north of san

frap-- san francisco. in the mountains, avalanches and a foot of snow stranding drivers. >> reporter: consistent rainfall is expected to continue throughout the weekend and they could see an additional 10". >> george: chief global affairs agent, tracking our next story from washington. >> reporter: good morning, a criminal investigation is opened into the severing of two fiber optic cables as the bottom of the baltic sea, data transfer that's vital between european nations and calling it an act of sabotage against the ukraine western allies. no one has accused russia, but germany and poland and the u.k. say moscow is escalating hybrid activities against nato and the eu-countries, unprecedented in scale and variety, are creating

significant security risks. moscow denies involvement, but the danish military ship is right now tracking a chinese flagged vessel in the baltic sea, and they suspect it may be linked to russia and the suspected sabotage. >> robin: thank you, and there was breaking news in the war in ukraine over night, ukraine accuses russia, of using an intercontinental blastic missile. good morning, ian. >> reporter: multiple strikes by russia, and the situation is rather confused. the big question, what was it? ukraine saying it was an icbm-s zelensky reenforced that in the last few minutes but they are still assessing. icbm's have not been used, but this was not a nuclear strike, and said they didn't think it

was an icbm, but many agree they haven't seen a strike like this, the kremlin doesn't comment. and ukraine, firing u.s. ballistic missiles and, fears about a potential russian attack. north korean generals were present at the site of the strike, in russia. it's been a week ofesqualations and all of this is gonna be huge president elect trump to end this war. >> michael: president elect trump's picks for the house ethics committee. they voted not to release the report on got- gaetz. and we have our correspondent in marjorie with more.

is quote if you are on the wrong side of the vote you are buying yourself a primary, that is all. there's a guy named elon musk who will finance it. the trump advisor says, the president decides his cabinet, no one else. some republican senators are on board. >> president trump won the popular vote, swept the battleground states and was given a mandate, he deserves the right to have his people in place. >> others are holding out when it comes to the nomination of matt gaetz, to become attorney general. >> sound clip: i was shocked by the nomination, given the many allegations. but it's important that, the senate go through its process ... >> reporter: trump suggested if any of his nominees are not confirmed he would bypass the senate and appoint cabinet members while the congress is in recess, an idea that the

republicans say is out of bounds. >> sound clip: that should be off the table, a serious candidate for a cabinet level position i would have to really wonder if they would want it or be willing to accept it under the recess appointment. these positions carry weight internationally, too much so to take the short cuts. >> reporter: in light of the accusations of elicit drug use and sexual allegations. gaetz, denies wrong-doing, and the senate republicans are pushing for the release of the ethics committee report on the gaetz they voted against releasing the report, at least for now. >> there's an agreement not to release the report. >> senators say, regardless of it was released the allegations will be examined.

gaetz faces a confirmation hearing. >> sound clip: no rubber stampless and no lynch mop, he will be held to account in the confirmation process. he deserves a chance to make his argument, why he should be attorney. general. >> reporter: another controversial appointment will be on the hill, george, the choice to run the defense department. >> george: and overnight, the police report on the sexual assault report against him was released? >> a sexual assault from 2017, the police report is make public, showing the woman at the center of the allegations told police that her phone was taken and prevented her from leaving his hotel room, she remembered saying "no", a lot, and george hegseth says it was consentual and the police ultimately referred the report

to the local district attorney, and no charges filed. hegseth acknowledged paying the woman not to go public and the attorney saying he wanted to prevent this from going public to avoid threatening his career. >> george: elon musk ramaswamy, detailed how to cut the workforce by trillions and the real question is how much they can cut, how much would they say, whether they can cut? >> reporter: they are outlining at times and have talked about 2 trillion out of a federal budget that is just over 6 trillion dollars. they are, among other things they talked about in the op-ed, mass firings of federal employees and requiring all federal employees to show up 5 days a week at the office, no more working from home. >> george: jon carl, thank you very much. >> michael: turning to the idaho student murder case. the judge refuses to take the death penalty off the table ahead of the brian kohlberger

murder trial. we have the details and reaction from the families. good morn kana. >> reporter: good morning, á the judge in the case says the death penalty is settled law in idaho, as is execution by lethal injection or firing squad and avoiding their clients' distress is not a reason to breech the laws. >> this morning, the death penalty stays. lawyers for brian kohlberger using a flurry of motions to argue the death penalty should be taken off the table. but the judge handed down a 55 page decision saying in part, "release in kohlberger's favor is not warranted on any of the 12 motions that the defense filed." the family of one of the victims told us in part, there's a newfound level of seriousness that's been absent for far too long. kohlberger's attorneys argued that the death penalty

violated his institutional -- constitutional rights and, if lethal injection drugs are not available, the firing squad is "cruel and unusual", and the judge says this is not ripe for discussion, because kohlberger is not convicted yet. >> they will reraise them in an attempt to try to save brian kohlberger's life at the end of the proceedings. >> filing sweeping challenges to the state's key evidence and accusing the pennsylvania law enforcement of failing to read his miranda rights the night of his arrest. a source tells abc nuse on the way with to the police station, kohlberger asked if anyone else was arrested. news >> kaley's family says they feel like justice is moving forward. the next hearing in the case is january, the trial will start in august. george? >> george: thank you, kaina. and a reaction to the laken riley case, sentenced to life

denzel is the man. >> george: i have a cover story, chronic pain, it's higher for women, the elderly and those adults who live farther from the city. here to talk to us is the doctor. >> doctor: this report uses data from the national health interview survey and the headline finding was in 2023, 23.4% of adults reported chronic pain. >> george: that's a lot. >> doctor: that's a lot, pain that lasts 3 months if not more. and, 8.5% reported high impact chronic pain, which is pain that is so debilitating it gets in the way of your daily life. so, not only are there so many people affected by with this, millions upon millions of people, but it turns out that some of us are more affected than others. so, in this study, women were 25% more likely to have chronic pain, men 23%.

people over the age of 65, had a rate of 36%, so that's quite high in comparison. and those in rural areas did worse, compared to those living in the big cities: 31% in rural areas, 20% in bigger city. there's some important disparities here. >> george: anything surprise you about the report? >> doctor: yes and no, we know women and elderly folks and people who live in rural areas are more vulnerable to chronic pain, and so, in that sense, these findings are in line with what we already knew about with this; however, i will say that i was surprised to see an uptick in the number of people reporting chronic pain, so remember that headline finding: 23.4 percent, with chronic pain in 2023, in 2019, that number was only 20%. >> george: what should people do to alleviate the pain? >> doctor: #1, important to see your doctor. you want to get checked out.
