1:43 am
>> scientists published their study in the journal science, calling the byproduct chloronitrile. it comes from chloramine, a chemical first added to water in the early 1900s that helps prevent harmful organisms in drinking water. but when chloramines combined with other naturally occurring compounds, it produces chloronitrile, which scientists don't know much about any chemical that you're putting inside of water, which that in itself is another chemical, could have byproducts and downstream effects and potentially long term effects. >> so all chemicals need to be well studied. >> experts say about 113 million people drink tap water that exposes them to chloronitrile, and it's been detected in 40 drinking water samples. its properties are similar to those of other molecules toxic enough for the government to regulate. >> it's essentially just a new piece of information that we have. there is absolutely no evidence to suggest that this chemical may be harmful.
