6:00 am
mornings live now at six, a wet and windy start to end your workweek. taking a live look
6:01 am
outside. we're tracking the storm that continues across the bay area. drew is here with the timeline of the rain today. >> pushback on san francisco's panda plan advisory committee asking for a full audit of the zoo as it works to bring the animals here. >> plus a giant gingerbread house, the fairmont, ready for its life sized display for the holiday season. details on the special ceremony this weekend. >> that is always fun to see. i'm sure you've been there multiple times. >> it's really beautiful smell. >> get a little drink at the bar while you're there. why not? yeah. it's your life. live it. good morning. on this friday, november 22nd. yeah. >> first, let's get a check of the forecast with drew. >> yeah. so today, this atmospheric river is finally on the move. so what that means this is widespread rain and downpours later on today. live doppler seven showing you for the most part, the showers are light across the city right now along the coast. some downpours moving into parts of sonoma county. once again, an area that certainly does not need any more rain. advisories do continue here through saturday. will likely see some more nuisance
6:02 am
flooding in areas as more rain moves in here today. we do have a flood warning on the russian river near guerneville. a flood stage here is 32ft. tomorrow morning, the river is forecast to crest at about 32.5ft. so half a foot above flood stage. so minor flooding is anticipated there today. it is a level two, not just for the north bay. it is for everybody today. widespread downpours, gusty winds, a chance of a thunderstorm and dangerous surf. so here's future weather. we have light to moderate rain right now. watch what happens close to lunchtime. we get more energy moving onshore. look at all these bright colors indicating the heavier rain. and this now does include the south bay, the inland east bay, which has been mainly dry this week. and then by 4 p.m. we're watching this time frame very closely this afternoon because when future weather starts popping up, these reds and spots, that is very heavy rain falling in a short amount of time. so rainfall totals are really going to add up over the next 24 hours. so looking at rainfall estimates, we do expect
6:03 am
widespread 1 to 3in of rain across the entire region. that could lead to a lot of standing water on roads later on this afternoon. so just be aware of that. speaking of roads, let's check in with sue and see how the commute is going this morning. >> good morning drew. >> we definitely have a commute happening this morning. i think we might have some technical difficulties. there we go. we are looking at the bay bridge toll plaza, metering lights have been turned on. don't be a surprise when you get there. not a big backup. in fact, not a backup at all. right now we have the rain coming into the north bay and as drew says, it's going to be settling in. we also are seeing some problem spots. we have a sigalert. this one is heading from san francisco, venice south 101 to the ramp to eastbound 80 is now shut down due to this accident. i suggest the bryant street onramp or fifth street onramp to get to eastbound 80, and we pop down to san jose northbound 87. we have an accident blocking some lanes. the right lane is a matter of fact, and you are stacked up
6:04 am
towards willow street. now heading on northbound 87. >> all right. thank you sue. and as she just explained, the wet and windy weather is impacting travelers on the road and those taking off in the skies this morning. so you might want to give yourself some extra time before heading out, especially because today marks the start of the thanksgiving travel week. abc seven news reporter lena howland joins us live. she's heading northbound on the golden gate bridge. good morning. lena. >> hey, amanda. good morning to you. we did just get on the golden gate bridge. we are heading northbound up in the direction of marin, where we are seeing some more of that rain. i want to go now to a look at what we are seeing on the roads right now, where the rain isn't coming down too hard. it does kind of look like sprinkles at this hou, but it is making for a little bit of a slick commute for drivers, and it's starting to slow some traffic down here in this area. now keep in mind this storm is hitting at the same time as many folks are hoping to start their thanksgiving holiday
6:05 am
early, with record breaking numbers for those hitting both the roads and the skies. triple a is estimating that 71.7 million americans will travel by car over thanksgiving. that's an increase of 1.3 million compared to last year, and conditions are not great for those flying to their thanksgiving destinations. so far this morning, the number of delays at sfo has doubled only in the past half hour. they are juggling nearly 80 delays and 13 cancellations, so far this morning, and it's only 6 a.m. by the end of the day. yesterday, they had more than 600 total delays and 91 cancellations in one day, according to flightaware. at one point, arrivals experienced delays of around three hours on average. now back here, live on the roads where we are starting to see that rain pick back up again. it doesn't matter if you are heading to your thanksgiving destination by airplane or by car. just remember to plan ahead for some extra travel time because you are bound to run
6:06 am
into this rain for now. reporting live on the golden gate bridge. >> lena howland abc seven news lena. >> thank you. multiple schools in the north bay will be closed today for the second straight day. so here's a list of the schools that are closed. its forestville academy and forestville school, kashia elementary, montgomery elementary, monte rio union school and oliver elementary also closed. northwest prep charter school and a lee high school and laguna high school. >> this storm is knocking out power for hundreds along the northern california coast. here's a look at the current p-g-and-e's power outages. they're mostly scattered. we are seeing fewer customers here in the bay area compared to 24 hours ago, and many families in the north bay are hoping their power does not go out again after they spent hours in the dark yesterday, the power outages came as they were also dealing with intense rain. some areas in santa rosa saw more than ten inches in less than 48 hours. when the power went out, it caused concerns for some
6:07 am
people about flooding in their homes. >> we've never had this much rain, so i had two sump pumps running and we have no power, so i'm really worried that that we might say hello to some rain, some water in the house. >> it's been intense, a lot of rain. we have quite a bit of water in our backyard and a little bit of flooding, but luckily we're on a hill so it all tends to drain down into the streets. >> and while you may not need the reminder, clearly other people do. you should not drive through a flooded road. stop and turn around. remember driving through flood water is dangerous. >> this looks like a creek, but it's a hotel, a medical office, parking lot in santa rosa. yesterday afternoon it flooded and it actually kept people from leaving. santa rosa fire says a waterway in that area got overwhelmed and it spilled over. multiple cars were submerged until firefighters came to help. we spoke to a woman who said that her mom got stranded at her job. i've seen it flood here a
6:08 am
lot of times. >> i've never seen it this bad. so that's why i thought maybe we could come help her. but obviously it's way above any type of civilian help. definitely leave it to the professionals with this one. >> in forestville, people say their homes flooded in minutes with little warning. the water flowing over sandbags and into people's yards and garages. neighbors say the water came from a nearby drainage culvert. >> i woke up this morning and saw the water rising a bit started to freak out so we put some bags out just in time so a little bit of water has gotten in, but i feel for my neighbors, they're taking it a little bit worse than i am. >> crews helped clear the culvert to give the rising water somewhere to go. the storm also toppled dozens of trees. we have more days of rain to come. you can track the storm as it moves through your neighborhood by scanning this qr code, which is right now on your screen. then you can bookmark it. that way you never have to do that again. and check the latest forecast
6:09 am
from abc seven. any time. >> speaking of live doppler seven, let's show you the big picture. we are now finally seeing our atmospheric river on the move. it stalled in the north bay for the past couple of days, but now it will move south and east throughout the rest of the bay area. a lot of moisture available to work with today. so that means we are tracking a heavy rain, especially late this morning and into the afternoon temperatures. right now we're in the upper 50s to the mid 60s, so that south wind is making us feel mild. so here's future weather. the next couple of hours showers mainly light to moderate, but watch what happens close to lunchtime. the intensity really picks up. you see all these bright colors on future weather, indicating that heavy rain right around midday and then in the afternoon. this is what we need to watch very closely. by 4 p.m. when you see this line of embedded reds that is intense rain falling, that could fall at an inch or two per hour, and that could likely lead to areas of nuisance flooding on our roadways. even our smaller streams and creeks in parts of the east bay and along the peninsula. later on this evening, we have heavy rain, mainly focused in the south bay.
6:10 am
and then late tonight the heaviest rain moves out. some light showers lingering. first thing saturday morning, but then the rest of saturday is dry. the flood risk today has been expanded now because this atmospheric river is on the move, the highest risk still in sonoma county, where we've had heavy rain the past couple of days. but elsewhere, the entire bay area has been outlined for the risk of some nuisance flooding. if you are traveling today, if you're headed south, once you get out of the bay area, things are a lot better sunshine in southern california, but please be aware if you are traveling to tahoe. reggie. the entire track up 8-80 rain and snow all day today, so be careful. >> no thank you. yeah. no, i appreciate the warning crab for christmas. when the commercial crabbing season might open and new role for bob myers, the former

a storm hitting the bay area this morning. here's a live look from the richmond-san rafael bridge. and as you can see, there's a lot of raindrops on our camera this morning, which means that it's going to be a bit of a slower commute. so please be careful out there. now we want to get you updated on the controversy involving the san jose state volleyball team. an emergency hearing was held in colorado yesterday with the san jose state player, who claims that her teammate is transgender. abc seven news south bay reporter dustin dorsey has more on what happened in court. >> as a season full of controversy for the san jose state women's volleyball team comes to an end on the court in
6:14 am
a different kind of court. a legal battle is just heating up. in a colorado court thursday, a lawsuit brought by sdsu co-captain brooke slusser against the mountain west conference. slosser challenges a policy that allows transgender students to play volleyball. slusser has refused our request for an interview, but has spoke exclusively on fox news about what she says is a fight for female athletes rights. the lawsuit asserts that slosser rights have been violated because the university is allowing a student. she claims is transgender, to play volleyball behind the scenes. >> i do have a lot of love and support from my team, so that's all that i could ask for, and i'm not asking them to stand up and talk because that's what i've decided to do. and i'm doing this for me and for them. >> five universities have refused to play against san jose state, forfeiting seven matches after forfeiting two of those games against the spartans because of the allegation that one player is transgender. utah state has filed a motion to join the lawsuit. the suit has been brought by slosser ten other athletes and sdsu associate head coach melissa beatty, who's alleging the mountain west
6:15 am
conference has violated title nine and first amendment rights. they want the forfeits rescinded. standings adjusted and the athlete in question banned from playing in the tournament. the judge hearing the case promised a decision expected as prompt as possible. the mountain west tournament starts november 27th. menlo college political scientist melissa michaelson says the decision won't be a final resolution, as the supreme court has already weighed in on the broader issue that has said, well, on the one hand, yes, you have to be sensitive to people's religious beliefs and first amendment rights, but you also have to treat transgender people fairly and discrimination against transgender people is a violation. a statement from a csu spokesperson read. san jose state university will continue to support its student athletes and reject discrimination in all forms. all san jose state university student athletes are eligible to participate in their sports under ncaa and mountain west conference rules. as it stands. sdsu's regular season is over after boise state forfeited thursday's match. the spartans are currently a fourth seed in
6:16 am
the conference tournament. bsu and usu are the only two potential tournament opponents that have forfeited matches against the spartans. if sdsu wins the championship, they would advance to the ncaa tournament, where they could face schools from anywhere across the country. in san jose. dustin dorsey, abc seven news. >> former oakland police chief leronne armstrong had part of his lawsuit against the city, dismissed by a federal judge. armstrong claims the city violated his right to free speech when it fired him. now that is the part that was tossed out by a judge yesterday. the second claim is still going. it accuses mayor xiang tao and the city of breaking state laws protecting whistleblowers from retaliation. armstrong was fired in february of last year over his handling of an internal investigation. there's a new push back on the effort to bring two giant pandas to the san francisco zoo. during a hearing yesterday, an advisory committee submitted a report to the recreation and parks commission claiming the 95 year old zoo is unsafe for animals, employees and visitors. commissioners raised concerns about the
6:17 am
accuracy of the report and felt the criticism was unwarranted. even so, the advisory committee is urging the board of supervisors to conduct a full audit of the zoo. >> the zoo plans on putting the pandas next to lions, so the lions and pandas would share a knight house together. that's incredibly irresponsible, and every decision that is made been around the pandas. even just bringing the pandas to the zoo really proves that the management at san francisco zoo is not putting animal welfare first. >> here's the next steps december 5th, an oversight committee will decide if a full audit of the zoo is warranted. as for the future of the zoo and the pandas, mayor elect daniel leary tells us he wants to review the latest report before deciding what he thinks should be next. >> if you are hoping to have crab on the table this holiday season, we have both good and bad news for you this morning. the bad news first, california
6:18 am
wildlife officials say commercial dungeness crab season will continue to be delayed. the good news it might open around mid-december, which means you could have crab for christmas. the issue is the humpback whale migration rules restrict fishing and crabbing to protect them from getting tangled in that gear. crabbing season was supposed to open last week, but officials say there has been two. there have been too many whales spotted along the coast. >> starting tomorrow, the annual life size gingerbread house at the fairmont comes to life. the holiday display will last through the new year. the house is made of hundreds of real gingerbread bricks baked by the fairmont pastry team and see's candy. you can book a dining experience or an afternoon tea in the gingerbread house. tomorrow at 11 a.m, there will be a ribbon cutting and tree lighting ceremony, along with the debut of the house. beautiful! i can practically smell it from here. now let's bring in ginger zee. she is live with a look at what's coming up on gma. yeah good morning ginge.
6:19 am
>> hey reggie. amanda great to be with you. coming up here on gma we are going to be covering your storm i know drew has been all over it, but we're going to get into the 17 plus inches of rain that has already fallen. and what's to come. and the big weekend ahead into early next week for the snow. also speaking of snow, we got some snow to chicago cleveland and it's happening outside new york city. more rain at the coast, which is good news. but i'll talk about the travel issues it might cause. and speaking of travel, if you're getting a jump start on thanksgiving travel, believe it or not, the tsa is expecting to screen a record number of passengers, so we're going to have some tips to skip the trouble. also, how one airline is cracking down on crowd control at its gates. i love this as a frequent traveler. then the new twist in the search for the father of three. police tracked him down in europe. how? they say he staged his own death to escape. and an oscar winner, denzel washington, is here. he's going to tell us about the piano lesson and gladiator two. plus a dozen of oprah's favorite things are stars of deals and steals. and it's all coming up on gma.
6:20 am
>> ginger, we had another idea to add on to this at the gate shaming. when people, you know, go out of order. yes. what if in addition to the shame, there's also a name. what if your name and picture are then flashed up on the screens? >> yes, i'm all about this because americans said that the noise that the thing makes isn't that loud because they don't want to induce shame. i'm like, why? yeah. and do they. come on. i would never induce it. like let's go. most of these people didn't make some sort of like, benign mistake. i've seen it. i see it every single week. and also, you should be some sort of, like, gravitational pull that if you're not in the first groups, don't stand around that front thing and you're not a diamond. i know you're not. you know, like i was waiting for that and it came. >> she did not disappoint. she did not disappoint. >> listen, i usually am not a person advocating. >> i know that 60 people right now are not diamonds standing
6:21 am
around this thing. >> they certainly are not. >> name them and shame them, and then they will never step foot on that plane. they're going to be like, so ashamed. >> that's fine. i will not take this. you know what you did? >> ginger zee has spoken. travel expert ginger zee has spoken. ginger, thank you for that. that made my morning. we'll see you at 7:00 and we'll be right back. >> all the way. i'll take it from here. wait. remember yesterday i was like, if you have eight kids, there's no way you're in group one. you just got to figure it out. those groups are wild. here's live doppler seven this morning. some downpours in the north bay. we'll press on and look closer into the city. we're seeing some lighter showers. similar story around mill valley, tiburon, and even some lighter showers beginning to fall around richmond, el cerrito. this morning, some light showers in oakland getting wet over the bay bridge. right now, a fresh wind advisory has been issued through tonight. we're seeing gusty winds already again this morning. could see gusts upwards of 50mph. look at these winds right now. good morning, san jose. your wind is over 30mph.
6:22 am
and that wind direction running perpendicular to all of our area bridges. so that means you're holding on to that steering wheel a little tighter as you cross the bay this morning. look at our winds in our hills, 30 to 60 mile per hour gusts right now in the oakland hills, 42mph in the north bay mountains, you can see 60 mile per hour gusts. so it is quite windy out there today. it's a level two for everybody, not just the north bay. our atmospheric river is on the move. so here's future weather this morning. we're tracking those downpours developing and strengthening. here's 3 p.m. that is some heavy rain across the entire region continuing into this evening. and then tomorrow, first thing in the morning, we have a couple of scattered showers, but the afternoon we should start to clear out for afternoon sunshine, get a bit of a break start to dry out in a lot of spots for sunday. there's an isolated shower here or there. very light in nature. we've actually brought down the storm impact scale from a two to a one on sunday. because of the weakening showers we are seeing, but rainfall today is going to be an issue. look at these totals just in the next 24
6:23 am

of the east bay shoreline marin county as well. flood advisories do continue in the north bay. this is the area we've just been talking about all week and for very good reason. we've seen upwards of 1 to 2ft in some parts of sonoma county, so any more rain is causing issues and that is why the flood advisory is in effect. we do have a flood warning on the russian river near guerneville. flood stage here is 32ft. tomorrow the river is expected to crest at 32.5ft. so half a foot above flood stage. minor flooding is expected here. winds are gusty right now. 30mph in oakland. 32 in san jose. and again, those winds running perpendicular to our area bridges. so that is going to be a tough drive over our bridges this morning. level two today for everybody. now that this atmospheric river is on the move, its widespread downpours throughout the morning. here's 1145 heavy rain that continues throughout the afternoon. just prepare for it to be very wet throughout the afternoon and evening. it will feel mild as well. daytime highs will be in the 60s and even

6:36 am
of 1.3 million compared to last year. and those conditions aren't great for those flying to their thanksgiving destinations right now. since 5:00 this morning, the number of delays at sfo has nearly tripled. as of last check, they're juggling nearly 120 delays and 38 cancellations at this hour, according to flightaware. but by the end of the day yesterday, they had more than 600 total delays and 91 cancellations in one day. these conditions aren't getting any better today, so we are expecting many more delays to come. now back here, live on the roads where we are still seeing a lot of that rain come down pretty hard on us here. it is a good reminder whether you are flying or driving to your thanksgiving destination, just be sure to plan ahead and give yourself plenty of extra time to get to where you need to go. for now. reporting live on 101. lena howland, abc seven news. >> lena. thank you. the oakland
