west coast and much needed rain in the northeast. in northern california homes flooded cars submerged as torrential rains dumped more than 17 inches. in santa rosa, california, some drivers stranded. >> people in the medical center and also people here in the suites are currently stuck because this is the only way out at this time. >> reporter: rivers overflowing creeks and canals. you can see that fast water moving behind me. that is not a river that's an intersection. here in northern california, these are bigger. i want you to see how fast this water is moving and what it's creating. a wave over 100 yards long. roads across northern california swamped. just reiterate what you just said. 60 inches is moving -- 6 inches of water moving this quickly can knock you off your feet. >> absolutely. and move a vehicle. it can lift a vehicle off the road way. >> reporter: winds in northern california gusting up to 65 miles per hour, downing trees.

>> hopefully, it's not broken. >> reporter: stormy weather pushing surfers far out into the ocean, leading to one rescue. >> i could barely even see him. >> reporter: in the mountains this latest storm dropping 2 feet of snow, another 2 feet on the way from california to washington state. now, there are still 200,000 people in washington state without power. this rain continues to pound down here. the flood warnings in effect until later this afternoon. and the rivers in this area expected to crest and begin flooding overnight and into tomorrow as the system continues to dump rain here into next week. michael? >> michael: all right, matt. thank you so much for that. we're going to turn to ginger who's tracking the storms for us and also the thanksgiving forecast. good morning, ginger. >> ginger: the atmospheric river is that fire hose of moisture. it's gonna keep pumping. it's also being powered by a new storm. the old one, that bomb cyclone is going around it. they're playing around each other. what that does is add extra uumph to the storm. we still have a significant

flash flood risk with an additional 3 to 7 plus inches possible in northern california, especially that north bay area. the bay is in the elevated. then on the foot hills of sierra, nevada, 5 to 10 plus inches. that could be a major problem. then east and we got snow. this is the road north and east of cleveland. mentor, ohio, more than half foot that made its way to woodbury, new york. this morning outside new york city we've got snow flying in new jersey and then the rain started falling. kind of a slushy mess. you're seeing it circle here with a low pressure system. it's gonna keep with us today into tomorrow and then start to move on. you've got winter storm warnings into boone, north carolina, west virginia, virginia got problems. then that thanksgiving forecast. so five feet of snow possible in sierra nevada, moved to denver. denver on wednesday, big travel day that could be problematic. then most of the models try to make this a little messy by thursday/friday here. so we have broken the seal. we finally are getting into a different pattern.

it is much needed for the drought. >> rebecca: much needed. now we're remembering what new york city is like with rain and snow. thank you, ginger. we appreciate it. now we turn to thanksgiving travel. aaa is predicting a record number of travellers on the roads and the skies over the holiday weekend. many are getting a jump start this weekend. we're covering the roads and the air starting with trevor ault at reagan national airport outside d.c. good morning, trevor. >> reporter: good morning, rebecca. and, yeah. here we are once again to poise some records this holiday travel season. tsa says the sunday after thanksgiving could be the busiest day in the agency's history. more than 3 million people flying. but really beginning start of next week it's going to be busy day after day after day. just the tuesday before thanksgiving the faa is anticipating 50,000 flights just that day. united airlines is expecting it to be their busiest travel season ever. 6 million passengers flying united. american airlines is expecting even more passengers.

8.3 million passengers. if you haven't booked yet or if you have flexibility you could maybe move them around. try to get a flight that takes off early in the morning. 5 a.m. 8 a.m. window. yes, it means an earlier wakeup, but you can greatly reduce your risk of delays by taking off early in the morning. as always when we're talking about big crowd, you want to make sure you get there early, give yourself extra time to work through the lines. >> george: okay, trevor. thanks. gas prices are dropping. stephanie ramos joins us from a gas station in new york. good morning, stephanie. >> reporter: george, good morning. if you're planning to travel, brace yourself. aaa predicting 79.9 million travellers will hit the road. that's nearly 2 million more people than last year. if you're driving we do have some good news. gas prices are expected to drop below $3.00 a gallon. that's a nice change from last year which was $3.26. here another deal. most sheetz in michigan, pennsylvania, ohio, north

carolina, virginia and west virginia will sell gas for $0.40 off per gallon next week. make sure to check the type of gas to make sure it's compatible with your car. busiest times to travel, tuesday and wednesday afternoons will be some of the busiest times on the road. if you want to avoid the crowds, experts suggest leaving on thanksgiving morning. it's the least crowded time to travel. for those renting cars, wednesday before thanksgiving is the peak pickup day. guys, no matter how you're traveling, plan ahead. george? >> george: good advice. thanks. now the trump transition. the president-elect moved quickly to replace matt gaetz after he withdrew as nominee for attorney general. replacing him with former florida attorney general pam bondi. chief washington correspondent jonathan karl is at mar-a-lago with the latest on that. good morning, jon. >> reporter: good morning, george. with donald trump's new pick to be attorney general, trump is showing once again that among the top qualifications he is seeking for his cabinet is

personal loyalty. just hours after former congressman matt gaetz dropped his bid to be attorney general, donald trump had a new choice to run the justice department, former florida attorney general pam bondi, a trump loyalist, sometimes seen on stage at trump rallies. >> president trump has been out there fighting for us nonstop. and if he's out there fighting for us, we're gonna fight for him. >> reporter: in announcing his choice, trump praised bondi as a smart and tough america first fighter, pledging she will, quote, refocus the doj to its intended purpose of fighting crime and making america safe again. bondi served as florida's attorney general from 2011 to 20 a tenure not without controversy including her decision to pass on a case against trump university, shortly after receiving a donation from the trump foundation. but both trump and bondi deny

any wrongdoing. after joe biden won the 2020 presidential election, bondi backed trump's false claims of election fraud. more recently, she's worked as a lobbyist and registered foreign agent. among her past clients the government of qatar. perhaps most importantly to trump, she's been a loyal member of his inner circle for years now, joining him on the campaign trail back in 2016. >> i can tell ya firsthand, when it comes to law and order, you know i don't mess around. neither does donald trump. >> reporter: serving on trump's legal team during his first impeachment trial. >> they threw due process, fundamental fairness and our constitution out the window in the house proceedings. that's why we're here. >> reporter: bondi's nomination comes after her florida fellow republican matt gaetz bowed out, withdrawing his bid amid allegations he used drugs and paid young women for sex. sources tell abc that one of the women also testified to the house ethics committee that she saw gaetz having sex with a

17-year-old girl. gaetz denies all of the allegations. gaetz is out but there is renewed scrutiny on some of trump's other nominees especially pete hegseth, a fox news weekend anchor and army veteran. trump's choice for defense secretary. >> we welcome the opportunity to talk to any senator that wants to talk to us. >> reporter: hegseth has been meeting with republican senators making his case to be defense secretary. he now faces scrutiny over past allegations of sexual misconduct, accused of sexually assaulting a woman in 2017 allegations he denies, saying it was consensual. in a recently released police report, a woman who met hegseth at a conservative women's conference in 2017 told authorities he cornered her in a hotel room, took her phone and blocked the door with his body, preventing her from leaving. she said he sexually assaulted her and that she remembered saying no a lot. >> the matter was fully investigated and i was completely cleared. that's where i'm going to leave

it. >> reporter: according to the report the police recommended the case be forwarded to a local district attorney for review and possible prosecution. although hegseth was never charged with a crime. but his attorney says he later paid a settlement to the woman to keep her from going public with the allegations because he feared it would hurt his career as a television anchor. several republicans have expressed support for hegseth's nomination. one seemed to brush aside the allegations in the police report. >> you can read the report yourself. if you read it, you can clearly see it was two people with each other. >> what about she couldn't get out of the room? >> well, that's one person's opinion. >> reporter: trump has named four nominees now to the justice department, all four of them have worked in some way as his personal lawyer. there's pam bondi. she represented trump in his first impeachment trial. number two and three positions nominees for those at the justice department worked to represent him in his criminal trial in new york. and the position of solicitor

general, that nominee argued the case for trump before the supreme court on presidential immunity. so all four, michael, have worked as trump's personal lawyers. now he wants them to work at the justice department. >> michael: seem likes he has a lot of personal relationships with everyone he is having join him. we're still watching for more cabinet picks from the president-elect including treasury secretary? >> reporter: yeah. treasury's the last big one to come. we expected a decision on this days ago. trump has interviewed finalists. there's four of them. several times. i am told there's a major disagreement that's broken out among the transition over who they think trump should pick. it's been described as one trump adviser as a knife fight. of course, michael, ultimately this decision will be one person's and one person's to make alone, and that's donald trump. >> michael: i'm sure we will be following that. thank you so much, jon, for that. now new threats from vladamir putin, blaming the u.s. for pushing the world into a global conflict. it comes as the u.s. says moscow

launched a new missile into ukraine. our chief foreign correspondent ian pannell is in ukraine for us this morning. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. it's been a bewildering week of developments here and rapid escalation in tensions between ukraine and its allies. above all between the u.s. on one hand and russia on the other. this morning fallout after russia's launch of a new hyper sonic ballistic missile against ukraine. the first time such a weapon's been used in combat. video circulating online showing bright flashes in the sky over over the east. the weapon wasn't armed but it is nuclear capable. the threat from russia is clear. a u.s. official confirming this missile contained multiple war head, able to hit several targets at once. >> this was a new type of lethal capability that was employed on the battlefield. >> reporter: pentagon officials confirming the united states was notified briefly before the launch. russian president putin threatening the u.s. and others.

saying this was a response to ukraine's use of american and british missiles against russia and warning they have the right to respond to any country allowing their weapons to be used by ukraine against russia. abc news also learning one of the attacks on russia this week wounding a senior north korean general as russia launches more attacks again this morning. guys, even china urging restraint by all sides this morning. remember, president trump vowing to end this conflict within 24 hours. i think the developments of this last week have shown how intractable the conflict is and how it risks becoming an even wider war. rebecca? >> rebecca: absolutely on going at this point. ian, thank you. we turn now to the egg shortage. with six days until thanksgiving, elizabeth schulze join us with those details. this is not what you want to hear six days before thanksgiving. good morning, elizabeth. >> reporter: it's not. good morning. definitely not what you want to see when you are stocking up the fridge ahead of the holidays. the average price we see now for

a dozen eggs $3.37. that is up 30% from one year ago when prices were about $2. you go back five years ago, we were averaging $1.28. the key culprit behind these higher prices and shortages on some store shelves is bird flu which typically does spread quickly during a fall when birds are migrating. department of agriculture expects an increase in bird flu cases will continue to dent egg supply and keep prices high going into next year. production dipped 2.6% in october compared to one year ago. keep in mind, egg prices are up more than any other food group over the past year. overall grocery costs up just about 1%. george? >> george: thanks. let's switch gear. football. browns beat the steelers. snowy thursday night matchup. >> yes, it was a fun game to watch. this rivalry between the browns and steelers included another player, mother nature. snow started falling in the tight back and forth battle. we take you to the fourth

>> reporter: this morning the new video of the father of three who police say faked his death and fled the country. >> today is november 11th. it's approximately 10 a.m. for you guys. i'm in my apartment. i am safe, secure, no problem. hope this works. >> reporter: he sent investigators this proof of life video. >> we know that he's alive. we do not know exactly where he's at. we know that it's someplace in eastern europe. >> reporter: they say he will face charges if and when he returns. >> the information that the county has at this point leads us to an obstructing charge. >> reporter: investigators say they first made contact with him through a russian speaking woman he was messaging before his disappearance.

they have been communicating with him ever since. the 45-year-old was first reported missing august 12th when he didn't come home after kayaking on this lake. police finding a capsized kayak and borgwardt's car. authorities searched the lake for 54 days, coming up empty. the sheriff sharing with gma how borgwardt's said he pulled off his escape. >> he overturned the kayak, dumped his phone in the lake and he paddled back on the inflatable raft where he got to shore and then got his e-bike and rode through the night to madison, wisconsin. in madison, he boarded a bus and went to detroit. and then into canada. >> reporter: investigators unravelling his elaborate plan after discovering that borgwardt's name had been checked by canadian law enforcement august 13th, the day after his disappearance. as they dug into his life, authorities finding he took out

a life insurance policy and moved money to a foreign bank before disappearing. >> the potential federal charges could be mail fraud, wire fraud and sheriffs fraud. all three of those are possibilities. >> the sheriff telling us right now their focus is on trying to get him to come home, something he is apparently refusing to do right now, guys. >> michael: interesting story. >> rebecca: very interesting. >> michael: thank you so much for that, eva. just in time for the holiday travel rush, american airlines is sounding off the alarm on travellers who try to cut the line, expanding their crackdown on passengers who attempt to board early. let's go back to trevor ault at reagan national airport. hey, trevor. >> reporter: good morning again, michael. i don't think i'm being dramatic when i say an orderly plane boarding process is a pillar of civilized society. american has rolled out this new feature to make sure everything is functioning properly.

we asked chef and author of the cookbook italian snacking anna gass to give them a try. she's here to tell us how it went. anna, i'm so glad you are here. >> thank you. thank you. welcome, welcome. >> rebecca: love your cookbook. let's talk about this first one. this is really -- as a mom who tries to cook with the kids, it always makes things tough. >> yeah. so everyone's ready for thanksgiving. if you have a big crowd, what we say, get some butcher paper. use it not only for your buffet to label all of your items, but you make little place cards for the kids with their name. this keeps them busy if you put this on their table. >> rebecca: everybody loves a box of crayons. so the kids are coloring while you're doing everything else. >> exactly. >> rebecca: i have seen this all over social media. you bake a pie in a bag? >> i was skeptical, too. i have to tell you, i am now a believer. >> rebecca: you're a believer in this? >> absolutely. >> rebecca: what do we need to do? >> you're going to make mine or your apple pie recipe.

i add shortbread crumbs, cinnamon. all the things. >> rebecca: yum. >> listen. i tried this with all butter crust an also store bought crust. it worked. >> rebecca: so you can save your time on the crust, if you need to. >> absolutely. >> rebecca: for ones who want to -- >> exactly. it works beautifully. >> rebecca: this is butter. >> little butter on top. do a sprinkle of sugar. if you're using store bought it's nice to juzz it up a bit. that's gonna go right in here. >> rebecca: this is probably part where you'll take more time than we are. but you do staple it. >> yep. you seal it up. the sealing is what creates that amazing steaming effect. look at this, rebecca. beautiful -- >> rebecca: you did this? >> i did this. >> rebecca: this is how it comes out. wow. i would not have expected that. >> it's completely hands off.

you aren't worrying about the crust burning, not worrying the apples are not soft. amazing. it's my new way. >> rebecca: you are not even having to check in on it. that would worry me, is it brown enough? or is it too -- how do you know? >> exactly. put it in the oven for exactly one hour. don't have to baby-sit it and it's ready. >> rebecca: we love that. moving on. this is the pumpkin pie hack. i can see kids getting involved in this one. >> absolutely. you can use a biscuit cutter or a cookie cutter. i like to freeze it for 30 minutes. >> rebecca: okay. >> because as we know, pumpkin pie is a little bit soft. it should come right out just like that. >> rebecca: all right. >> i'm glad it did this. so i can show you. all you are gonna do is get in there with a spatula. we got an answer for everything. >> rebecca: nice. makes little minipumpkin pies for everybody. >> exactly. and the scraps, that's the little present you give yourself the day before thanksgiving. >> rebecca: that's the present i give myself while i'm making these. >> exactly.

you can't touch the pies on the day of. >> rebecca: okay, cool. >> little whip and little cinnamon. just don't put the whip on until you are ready to serve. >> rebecca: wait for the servings. okay. what do we have over here? >> here, we have my sweet potato casserole. i'm gonna give you my trick. >> rebecca: and canned yams. >> exactly. canned yams are yams water and sugar that have been cooked and peeled so you don't have to do it. i do strain them. because i don't want that sugar. i'll put in my own. we have eggs, heavy cream, maple syrup. this is gonna go in. >> rebecca: you use canned yams when you're cooking. >> i'm not ashamed to say it. >> rebecca: really. okay. >> just for this. such a time saver. it's a beautiful product. it's perfectly cooked. >> rebecca: perfectly cooked yams. you mix it all together and this is your end product. >> you're going to make a lovely pecan crust that you will sprinkle on top. goes in the oven 40 minutes. gets golden brown and delicious.
