4:12 pm
here's abc news reporter morgan norwood. >> the nation's roads and airports expected to be more crowded this year, with 80 million people set to make the mad dash for the thanksgiving holiday. but with severe weather stretching across both coasts, experts say it's time to prepare now. the holiday travel exodus is on, and once again, we're prepped to break records. the tsa is bracing for sunday after thanksgiving as the busiest day in the agency's history, with more than 3 million people taking to the skies tuesday alone. the faa is anticipating more than 50,000 flights. >> thanksgiving is the busiest travel holiday of all. this is the time of yer when most people travel, so already you're comparing a very high number from last year. the fact that last year was a record and that we're even going to surpass that this year means a lot. they're expecting consistently high numbers all next week, and airlines, they're preparing to. >> united airlines says this thanksgiving stretch will be their busiest travel season ever, with 6 million passengers. american airlines expecting 8.3 million. in the big tip from
4:13 pm
experts if you haven't booked your flight or you can move your schedule around, try to take off earlier in the day. flights between 5 and 8 a.m. will greatly reduce your risk of delays, and when it comes to the roads, you won't be alone either. millions more will drive to their holiday destinations. >> more people are leaving on tuesday before thanksgiving. a lot of schools are closed on wednesday, so families with kids are taking off on tuesday instead of wednesday. and then instead of coming back on sunday, they're coming back on monday because sunday traffic has historically been just so bad. >> and if you are hitting the roads, it may not cost you as much to fill up this year. as triple a says the national average for a gallon of regular unleaded gas is 305, and that's down from 328 a year ago. morgan norwood abc news, new york. >> all right, let's take a live look at the roads around the bay area right now. one camera, upper left. uh. it's so bad. it's so bad. it's blue. yeah. you don't want to look at it. uh- the east shore freeway and bay bridge toll plaza. you can see bay bridge toll plaza. is not that bad. uh- upper right on
4:14 pm
the bottom. golden gate bridge and the richmond bridge. and for everybody who's out there, just please drive slowly and calmly. next wednesday is expected to be the busiest travel day on the roads during the holiday week, and today's storm bringing a lot of snow to the sierra. good news for ski resorts. palisades tahoe officially opened today for the ski season five days earlierthe than planned. the resort said recent snowfall and their snowmaking efforts made it possible. >> okay, so it is kind of wet snow they're getting today, but i think i took a peek at lisa's forecast. i think it's colder, so maybe a little more powdery, a little less wet. >> well, that will be okay. so i got to tell you, i'm driving in approaching the metering lights toward the bay bridge. car in front of me spins out. no crashes into the concrete barrier on the side. i was like 3 or 4 car lengths away. well, i hope so, but it was just madness out there. i mean, the rain was coming down so heavily. lisa, i know you bumped the storm scale
4:15 pm
up to number three, and i think you were wise to do so. >> oh, thank you. because, yes, we heard of the flooding right in the middle of the afternoon. and, you know, the streets, the urban cities with the smaller storm drains really can't handle it. and we didn't get a chance to really absorb the rain into the soil. a lot of runoff. and what we're looking at is right now the rain rates getting a little bit less in san francisco. so instead of a flash flood warning, it's just a flood warning. so that's some good news we had today. over an inch and a half in novato. 0.58. orinda 1.53 san francisco. just trace amounts in san jose, but a half an inch in redwood city, a third of an inch in hayward and still counting downpours. gusty winds. level three with the flooded roads, mudslides, downed trees and that train of steady moisture beginning to sink to the south and east. so look at the lighter shades up in the north bay. now, we've had over 11in here in the past couple of days, setting a record in santa rosa. so the folks up to the north need a break.
4:16 pm
but this highlighted area here is all the areas we're watching for flooding, flood warning until 5:00 here for san francisco. we go in closer and you'll notice over into the east bay it's until 6:00 down the peninsula. following that line of heavy rain until early tomorrow morning. pescadero there and up in the north bay, those rivers guerneville, the russian river still flooding and looking at until about 4:00 on monday. so it takes about a day or so for the water to recede after the rain stops. and it is barely stopping. in parts of the north bay, you can see mill valley still some light rain. the heaviest rain though. look at san francisco, the bay view 280 here, the reds and oranges there up to a half inch to an inch an hour down the peninsula you can see through san mateo very heavy rain over into the east bay. oakland got hammered and still continues to see the heavy rain out towards san ramon valley. lighter rain into fremont. but you're getting into the moderate rain and you can see also filling in here down around
4:17 pm
morgan hill. so the wind advisory dropped for the north bay for the east bay, the peninsula right on through tonight as current surface winds up to 32 miles an hour. half moon bay, upper elevations. we're at 55 miles an hour behind the front. that cold air settles in and we'll be looking for a cooler day tomorrow. the winds continue to stay up to 20 to 25 miles an hour through seven, 8:00 tonight. and that's when the front finally pushes along the central coast. a live look outside there doesn't look too bad at the golden gate bridge, but look at here in san francisco. still, a lot of raindrops out there and the temperatures are cooling off hour by hour. here we're looking at the heaviest rain, continuing to press to the south and east by 8:00 it's pushing out of the south bay, so the next 2 to 3 hours the rain will continue to lighten up in the city. but over into the east bay, still another hour or two. you can see saturday morning some light showers. nice sunshine for the big game tomorrow and then by sunday clouding up a few
4:18 pm
scattered showers. level one both days and then by monday we have less rain. and in fact, as we look at the next several hours into saturday night about a, you know, you can see under an inch here. so that is some good news. winter storm warning. now this has been heavy in terms of wet snow above about 9000ft. so 2 to 6in is all we can get at around lake level. but this will change as the cold weather moves in through sunday. you can see two feet there. that would be good news in kirkwood 60s tomorrow. kristen, your game looks dry. the accuweather seven day forecast notice dry for thanksgiving. that's the only day we don't have a storm impact scale number. but these are weak systems. after today this is it. so after today we all can get a big break. >> that's good news. >> we'll be dodging some showers. >> yes. great. i don't have to be in a poncho tomorrow from 12 to 4. okay. thank you. lisa. >> all right. crews are still on the scene of a fire
4:19 pm
at a warehouse in south san francisco. started this afternoon at the facility off canal street near spruce avenue. this is an industril area of south san francisco, and you can see the flames there. thick smoke billowing from the building. no injuries yet reported. >> oakland's teachers union wants the school district to rethink how it's approaching its projected $78 million budget deficit. one of the plans being considered is merging ten schools. actually, the oakland education association says this would disrupt students learning. it also says previous closures did not save the district any money and led to declining enrollment. >> we are seeing growing administration, central office and contracts while our teachers are doing more with less, and this has been going on for years. ousd has continued to push more cuts to schools and balance the budget with discriminatory closures. >> osd says the mergers will save the district $3 million.
4:20 pm
the union feels the district is inflating the amount of the budget deficit, basing it on peak spending during the pandemic rather than during typical years. the board will vote on the plan next month. >> up next, the nba sends a warning to its athletes what they're told to look out for. >> and later, the fight against pollution, what the (discouraged) so expensive. i mean, i'm helping my mom out, i don't have that kinda cash. - ugh, i know. but you can get financial help now through covered california. it's totally affordable. you'd be surprised. they've got this calculator thing that shows how much you'll pay. - for real? - yeah! what are you doing not having health insurance, man?

progress right now in the bay area, and you can just tell from our radar how heavy the precipitation is throughout the bay area right now. and on your right, you have a live picture from our mount tam camera. as you know, it's very high up there. you can see the winds are whipping the trees and the visibility is poor because of how badly it's raining right now. >> we do have some sports news to squeeze in here. the 40 niners just cannot catch a break when it comes to injuries. quarterback brock purdy and defensive end nick bosa are both out sunday in a virtual must win game in green bay. purdy dealing with a shoulder injury. the niners were hoping he could play this week. they anticipate him coming back soon, but not by sunday. sow the team turns to brandon allen as their backup quarterback. he'll move in as the starter. he's only played 16 games in his whole career. >> it's definitely an opportunity for me to go out and play well and put our guys in a, you know, a good position to win the game and obviously we want brock back
4:24 pm
and healthy and all that. but you know, for the time being, you know it is an opportunity for me. we're going to have 40 guys 48 guys in uniform. and i knowr guys believe in themselves i believe in them. and we're missing two good players. definitely. but we got a lot of good players out there. so by no means do you not have a chance to win. so we're going to go fight our tails off and expect this to be a real good game. >> allen has not thrown a touchdown since january of 2022, so this is going to be quite the test on sunday. the nba is urging players to upgrade their home security this following a rash of burglaries targeting professional athletes. the league advised players to remove real estate listings with interior photos of their homes, and perhaps even get a dog. both the nfl and nhl issued similar warnings to their players this week. >> our weather coverage continues next with a look at the impact the weather is having on the start of the thanksgiving holiday travel weekend. >> the abc seven storm impact scale. today's storm is level three. that means a strong storm

4:27 pm
you can see the rain is still coming down this afternoon. pretty much wherever you look on the screen, it's wet out there pretty much. >> meteorologist lisa argen is back here with a look at what's happening and what is still ahead for us. lisa. >> okay, we saw 3.69 on top of mount tam about an inch and three quarters at sfo, and only about 2/10 around palo alto. but more is coming your way on the peninsula level three system with downpours, flooded roads and some mudslides out there just running the gamut, with the
4:28 pm
heaviest rain getting the flooding now in the east bay. the peninsula and the south bay. so we will watch out for that. and i know what is going on here. this is. yeah, that is pretty wild. okay. that was emeryville. but as you see, the steady line of rain here. notice it is sinking to the south. so that lighter shade up to the north is where the rain has ended in the north bay. that's some good news. so the green here represents the potential for flooding along the peninsula until 5:00. we're looking at that flash flood warning in the east bay until 6:00. further down the peninsula towards pescadero. not until early tomorrow will it expire. and this is the warning up towards guerneville. so it's going to take some time for the flood waters to recede. but good news there in the north bay. check out san francisco. those reds there it is still coming down very heavily, anywhere from about a half an inch an hour. and we take you a little bit further down towards san bruno. and you can see how heavy that rain is there over into the
4:29 pm
east bay. oakland, orinda not getting a break very heavy rain right on through six 7:00 and then over into sunnyvale and cupertino. it's been light rain, but more is to come. so through about 7:00 we'll see this continue to sink to the south and east. that's our wind advisory. and looking at those gusty winds to accompany the heavy rain this evening. so we've told you suggested stay off the roadways and you know you've seen the pictures for yourself. so after 9:00 things really do improve. all right. >> good news there. the rain and wind really slowing travel at sfo. just in time for the busy thanksgiving travel week. at least 50 flights had to be canceled and hundreds of other flights faced delays. >> the faa issued a ground delay for the airport this morning. it's in effect until 11 p.m. abc seven news reporter lena howland has the latest from sfo. >> stormy weather is slamming the bay area just as holiday travel gets off to a slow start. >> we were thinking it would be quite busy, but it's not. >> i think yeah, we're getting away at the right
4:30 pm
time, but other travelers weren't so lucky. >> hundreds of flights have been delayed all before noon. the friday before thanksgiving because of reduced visibility, the onset of rain and gusty winds. although peak traffic is not expected until sunday, airport officials are still expecting around 160,000 people in and out of sfo friday alone. >> the strength of the winds and the direction that they're coming from has caused us to reconfigure how we're using our airport, so we're taking off and landing in kind of a different configuration than we normally see. and that's really contributing to the delays and cancellations that we're seeing today. >> meaning typically flights will take off in the direction of either oakland or pacifica. but today they've taken a 180. >> in other words, our flights are taking off towards the san mateo bridge, and they're landing coming from oakland. this is what we call a southeast plan because of that unusual direction of the winds associated with this storm. >> and it doesn't end there
4:31 pm
because of reduced visibility for safety reasons. sfo is increasing the separation between planes on the runway. that's why by mid-morning, sfo arrivals were experiencing delays of two hours and 30 minutes on average. but no matter what time the flight, the best advice the baines family had for fellow travelers is to give yourself more time to get to the airport during these conditions. >> earlier the better, right? earlier, the better. plus, you get to your destination on time with this many delays and cancellations, this is a good reminder to check your flight status before actually coming to the airport. >> and keep in mind there are new federal regulations in place this year that mandate all airlines to issue automatic refunds for domestic flights that have been delayed for three hours or more, and all international flights that have been delayed for six hours or more at sfo. lena howland abc seven news. >> severe weather causing some other transportation issues around the bay area.

mean, they zombies. >> that's this. definitely. both of them look good, larry. yeah. >> yeah. all right. do you have a crutch phrase, like, with authority or something like that? according to stanford researchers, these are phrases you should steer away from, especially in professional settings. we'll go down the list. i think sort of kind of it seems perhaps it might be. looks like possibly. maybe. i feel like instead the recommendation is use declarative statements, which will make you appear to be more confident. so i k i sort of feel kind of like perhaps it seems maybe i should choose other words, possibly, maybe. but that's how i feel like. >> i feel like i probably use some of these sometimes, but maybe i should refrain more. i don't know. >> i don't know. kristen, you're kind of a wordsmith.
4:41 pm
>> i am yes. yes. yes. >> i tend to be a little declarative. >> that's a good thing. yeah. >> i have noticed that. >> and sometimes i can be adamant, but only occasionally. no. i don't know. i just think it's situational in the sense that you don't want to come across like you have the answer to everything all the time. quite frankly, none of us does. that's a little close minded. right. so i think it's okay to hedge a little sometimes. >> sometimes when appropriate, realize you're saying all these words so it's good to just listen. and i don't say that. yeah, maybe you do. >> yeah. >> slow down. when you're talking out loud. it's hard when you're going fast. and i certainly talk fast. >> so i think that's something we all do here. okay. yesterday we told you about a very expensive cup of coffee. today it's about free coffee. but once again, there's a catch. a massachusetts coffee shop is giving away free coffee to people who walk into their shop dancing like that. and let the owner post the video on social media. the owner says it's been so popular he plans to do the

4:46 pm
from the east bay to the south bay stopping in the north bay, here are the advisories from a flash flood warning along the peninsula until 5:00. that's northern san mateo. the east bay oakland, 6:00. further south, 1230 in the morning down towards pescadero and those rivers still rising for another day or so. the russian river at guerneville. this is the best news we've been able to pass along the north bay. just some very light drizzle out there. but look at the east bay from 580. we're looking still at those heavy downpours towards danville, san ramon and finally union city. you're getting some heavy rain down towards 680. and this continues to sink to the south and east from pescadero. los gatos and over in santa cruz. but you can see walnut creek there. now getting the heavy rain. danville as well. so we will have the winds accompanying this front as it pushes through. now this is about another two hours or so, but as it pushes south, the winds will lighten up. the rainfall lightens up, but still,
4:47 pm
looking at 25 to 30 mile an hour winds upper elevations still over 45 miles an hour in the north bay. but we'll look for the winds to subside overnight. you won't be hearing those raindrops overnight. and then to early tomorrow we'll see a few light showers, but it's a much better day out there in fact, a better weekend. we'll get into some sun. there's how it looks outside 50s behind the front. temperatures are really cooling off and so we'll look for the system now to push on out of here larry. >> all right. thank you. lisa. sun sounds really good right about now. becoming climate ready can mean searg for big solutions. and now a research team at berkeley is focusing on a pollutant found around the globe. we're talking about plastic. they've created a tool to help get rid of the plastic. here's abc seven news meteorologist drew tuma. >> it pollutes the oceans and countries in nearly every continent, making its way into the food chain and our bodies. but a team from the university of california believes eliminating plastic pollution is
4:48 pm
not only possible, but achievable. this month, the united nations will conduct final negotiations on an international plastics treaty. >> it is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity to actually end this, because plastic is such a global problem, it's really hard to solve with san francisco doing the right thing, california doing the right thing, even the us doing the right thing. this is our one chance to come together as a planet. >> they're hoping to influence the outcome with something called the global plastic policy tool that we first profiled here on abc seven last year. the current version allows policy makers to click on any number of data points to see what the effects of a specific policy would be. among the possibilities requiring 40% of global plastic waste to be recycled invest 50 billion in expanding waste management and introducing a packaging tax, a combination they believe could nearly eliminate most plastic pollution. >> and the first thing we
4:49 pm
discovered was really exciting observation that actually, you can at least theoretically, end plastic pollution using this treaty. >> data scientist cierra martinez helped develop the tool. she says the challenge was to get it into the hands of decision makers, to help them understand the data and really put a connection of humans making decisions that really led to an improvement in our model, improvement in our tool. >> and i think that was the missing piece to kind of actually get it into the, the, the hands of people who could actually use it for good. >> they point out that microplastic particles are already making their way through the marine food chain and showing up in drinking water, and even the human bloodstream. and they believe an enforceable global treaty may be the best chance to turn the health threat around and potentially life saving for the planet. >> so it certainly has the potential to be the thing that sets the stage for the rest of my life. the rest of our kids
