the warnings coming up when i see corruption and abuse and things behind the scenes that are not right, i'm not the type to step down and go away. >> new at six. only abc seven news talks to the man in the middle of the controversy surrounding the san mateo county sheriff. >> always live abc seven news starts right now. >> this is the strongest day of stormy weather all week. live doppler seven is all lit up with the rain. and tonight we're going to show you what this weather is doing to the bay area. good evening. >> i'm ama daetz and i'm dan ashley. thanks for joining us. we upgraded today's storm to a level three on the storm impact scale. that makes it a strong storm. and that's certainly what's been on display today around the bay area. >> we are seeing flooding on both surface streets and freeways, as well as rivers at risk of overflowing. schools are closed, events are canceled, and we will have more wet weather this weekend too. >> we have team of reporters covering the weather impact all over the bay area today, and you're going to hear from

these three within the next ten minutes. >> that's right. first, let's go to abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel. she is tracking the storm. sandhya. yeah. >> ama and dan. it is dangerous conditions out there as far as driving goes. stay off the roads. if you can. we're already seeing numerous reports of flooding. take a look at the atmospheric river. it is hosing that moisture right into the east bay and the south bay, where the worst of it is right now. so we're getting you into street level radar. santa clara, san jose, you will notice right around 880 it is coming down pretty good. and really when you look at some of these rainfall rates, they're pretty intense, about a half an inch per hour. and now that the ground is becoming saturated in some areas, we're seeing those problems or the rain is running off in places like the south bay. here's the east bay, 680 dublin, dublin boulevard, 580. it is pouring san francisco. we've seen so many issues just trying to navigate around along the peninsula and into the city. we are seeing some moderate rain right now, santa cruz mountains, it is dumping and i do want to

kind of widen this picture here from the peninsula all the way to the north bay. we're still seeing the rain. it's not like it's done. we do have a flash flood warning for parts of the east bay, and that is in effect until this evening at 745. so watch out. a number of flood alerts, from advisories to watches to warnings. the warnings are in effect for the russian river at guerneville as minor flooding is expected. the navarro river at navarro and the russian river at hopland expecting flooding as well. so both are under flood warnings. looking at that strong level, three storm atmospheric river continuing to move in. it is stalled out right now, so do expect the heavy rain to continue in the east and south bay this evening at 7 p.m. 8 p.m. notice that it continues at 9 p.m. while the north bay is starting to get a break through. tonight, it is a level three flooding rain, gusty winds, downed trees, mudslides and a chance of thunderstorms. the winds have certainly been gusty. right now, oakland hills 53 miles an

hour and at the lower elevations, gusts to 29. in half moon bay. a full look at the forecast, which includes that wind advisory coming up. >> all right, sandia, thank you. the north bay has had e worst of the weather this week. and now they're worried the russian river could overflow. let's begin our team coverage with abc seven news reporter cornell bernard, who is live in forestville. cornell. >> hey, i'm three days of nonstop rain has prompted a lot of flood concerns on the russian river, where the river continues to rise. a flood warning now in effect. a lot of roads are now closed, including the one you see behind me. waller road, here in forestville. now, we just received some video into our newsroom. we don't want. we do want to show you this water rescue which happened in the last hour. the sonoma county fire district says two occupants in a jeep had to be rescued after they drove onto slosser road, which was closed. at the time, there was four feet of water. both driver and passenger

were not injured. this is happening in forestville tonight. meantime, residents in guerneville say they are moving to higher ground pretty soon, and by this evening it'll be like three feet of water in here. olivia lindauer and her father are wasting no time moving her house trailer out of downtown guerneville. her neighborhood could be under several feet of water by saturday. >> i mean, it's not as big of a pain to move in your entire house that doesn't have wheels on it, but it's still not fun, that's for sure. all right, let's go. >> let's go. >> brianna holmes is already on the move to higher ground with her trailer. >> just like getting uprooted from your home and stuff. have to go find somewhere else to live for a few days. >> pet care, all of it. >> i might even probably going to miss work tomorrow too, so that's unfortunate. >> super stressful. it's so stressful. >> it's probably the it's probably the most stress i could have. are you okay up there? >> some guerneville neighborhoods are starting to flood. firefighters going door to door, checking on residents. all eyes on the russian river,

which is expected to reach flood stage soon. >> it's in monitor stage now, but it's looking at this time to be about at 34ft. so as you can see, the neighborhood we're in, this is a pretty good indicator to us. these are the first areas that start to flood for us from some of the creeks. >> but it's nice. it's high up there. so hopefully we don't. the water won't get us, water won't get us. >> everything that isn't nailed down is being moved up and away from the floor. at the surrey glamping resort, the resident cat is also ready for transport. the resort sits on a low lying spot where flooding is almost guaranteed. >> today we're just having the staff basically clear everything out and then, you know, if the flood waters come up, you know we'll clean up, put the tents back up before next season and we'll be ready to go. >> an rv on the property got stuck in the rising water and mud in nearby healdsburg. heavy rain caused this mudslide on buena vista drive. city crews are waiting for drier weather before they can shore up the hillside. back in guerneville, it's time for neighbors to move

out in a couple days home. >> don't go anywhere. >> again, a flood warning now in effect for areas of the russiann river near guerneville. the fire department says no evacuation orders have been issued, but folks living near flood prone areas like the river or streams should be ready to go at a moment's notice. we're live in sonoma county tonight. cornell, bernard, abc seven news. >> all right. cornell, thanks very much. now, this storm has knocked out power to thousands of people. here's a look at the current p-g-and-e's power outages. the biggest ones are marked by those orange squares. about 500 customers in san francisco. another 500 near hayward are without power. this is actually an improvement over the large outages we've seen throughout the day. all right. now let's continue our team coverage in the east bay. the poor weather canceled a rally at cal today, but people are still hopeful for tomorrow's big game. abc seven news reporter tim johns is live in berkeley. tim. >> yeah. dan. here in the east

bay, there are several flash flood warnings after we got more than an inch of rain in just a matter of a couple of hours. and of course, more is expected. but i want to show you guys some video. our crew just got in the past hour from near the intersection of seventh and ashby here in berkeley. now there is localized flooding here in just after 4:30 p.m. police did issue a statement urging people to avoid this area. now, back here at the uc berkeley campus, there are also reports of flooding as well. and that's putting a big damper on what's supposed to be a big, big weekend. of course, with the cal stanford football game. as intense storms continue hitting our region on friday. the east bay getting drenched with rain in berkeley, city manager daniel marroquin tells us the bad weather has been good for business over the past few days, with customers opting for more hot tea options. >> they stay inside, get the hot drink and they just stay for a little bit and they leave the

bad weather not making everyone's job better, though. >> outside the tea shop, we ran into fedex worker michelangelo rosales. rosales says the rain can destroy many of the packages he's delivering. >> it's always the packages inside, so we kind of have to force ourselves to bring the packages back and bring a new batch on the campus of uc berkeley. >> this weekend is one of the biggest football games of the year. the school's team is set to play arch rival stanford saturday for their annual so-called big game. the game, expected to attract fans from all across the country. >> well, my parents went to cal. i got some other siblings. they went to that the, you know, the farm down there, the junior university. so, you know, the rival. it's fun. it's fun. we always dig on each other on that. >> cal alumni walter bierbaum says he and his family came up from san diego early to attend a planned pep rally friday outside sproul hall. >> we're ready. we have our ponchos, so we're ready for the atmospheric river, river or whatever they call it. these days, so we're good. >> that rally was ultimately canceled as the rain continued to pour down. despite the setback, though several students

say they don't expect it to kill the energy on campus or diminish turnout for the big game that includes isaac davis and his classmates, who were selling game shirts outside of the hall friday afternoon. >> honestly, it's about the camaraderie, i think. berkeley. rain or shine, we're going to still show up. big game is one of the biggest games of theone year. again, like you know, fight the trees, go bears. >> and guys, we did go check out the football field itself where staff is working hard to try and keep it as dry as possible ahead of tomorrow's big game. but with weather like this, that's easier said than done. i'm live in berkeley. tim johns, abc seven news. >> all right. thank you so much, tim. and this week, stormy weather is impacting flights in the bay area. this is a live look at san francisco international airport where 500 flights were delayed. today. that's less than yesterday. fewer than yesterday. but about the same as wednesday, the first day of the storm. there have also been dozens of canceled flights. we want to continue our team coverage in the south bay, where many people spent the earlier part of the day preparing for the rain. abc

seven news reporter zach fuentes is live in san jose for us. hi, zach. >> hey there amelia. the conditions have really worsened here. earlier in the day, in the morning, earlier in the afternoon, we didn't really see much rain here in san jose. but later this afternoon and as you can see this evening, the rain has intensified and the winds have picked up quite a bit too. and all of this weather coming as christmas in the park here in san jose is being set up. we got a look at how crews are working to protect the festive structures. the rain is not going to ruin this san jose holiday tradition, so we open on the day after thanksgiving on november 29th. >> the rainy days are my most favorite days in the park because there's fewer people here and all of the lights just kind of glisten and it's just magical. so that's what i think people should come down here. >> still, precautions are taken to protect the beautiful displays. >> we're prepping for the rain. we're putting sandbags out just to protect some of our displays. but all these displays are designed and built to be in the rain, the

wind, the sun. and they're going to be just fine. >> and it's not just christmas in the park that's focus on the sandbags. valley water making sandbags like these available at stations throughout the county. they're asking residents right now to stay alert. >> we've been messaging out to the public to make sure that they're prepared. as you know, the wet season starts, so we're asking everybody to make sure that they have an emergency plan in place in case there is flooding. >> san jose resident dan mccarthy taking no chances and making sure his family doesn't either. >> my son's got a got a shed in the back that has a low point by the by the door. so i thought i'd take a little preventive action today. >> right now, the hope from officials is that the rain will have as minimal of an impact as possible on residents like mccarthy and his son, and instead bring benefits. >> we're hopeful that this will just be good for our water supply. although we're not expecting a lot of water to go into our reservoirs.

just seems like it never ends. >> no. and it intensified today. going to a level three storm. sandhya patel is here with the latest forecast. and it really did get stronger today. >> it was definitely a pounding rain. dan a level three storm indeed. and let's take a look at live doppler seven right now. you will notice where the heaviest rain is at this hour. we're going to get you into street level radar. we are seeing some downpours right around tassajara altamont area. street level radar across five 8-80 livermore, las positas road. watch out because it is not easy navigating through this region. as we take a look at parts of the south bay around alum rock, edenvale, evergreen, highway 101, san jose. you know, you've been probably seeing the last couple of days. where is my rain? well, clearly it has been a little bit of time before it got to your area, but it is coming down and san francisco has been soaked today with flooding across many of these

areas. and neighborhoods, i should say. so from san francisco to south city right now, we're getting some steady light to moderate rain on the peninsula. same thing from skyline boulevard. san mateo into redwood city, woodside area. as we kind of widen the picture here, the north bay that has been getting so much rain over the last 24 to 48 hours is finally getting a little bit of easing of this strong level three storm. so let's get you into where we are seeing a flash flood warning continuing until 745 for parts of the east bay. widening the picture here. this level three storm is feeding atmospheric river is feeding into northern and central california. so we are just getting soaked right now. there have been lightning strikes as well, and i want to just show you kind of a closer view of how much moisture is still streaming in. it is switching over to snow in the sierra, but there has been rain at the lower elevations. this strong level three storm is going to continue for the next few

hours, and then it will wind down after tomorrow morning. we're going to check out the rain totals right now. we have seen in the last 24 hours over three inches in san rafael, almost two in san francisco, an inch and a third in oakland. you will notice almost three in ben lomond over an inch there in half moon bay. and napa, santa rosa close to three. but you get out towards oakland and it's been more than an inch of rain now. trace amounts san jose that's changing. obviously that's the official weather service report from 4 p.m. 3000/600 in concord. a live view from our emeryville camera. take it easy out there. wet roadways, 50s 60s on the temperatures right now. looking at the storm impact scale through tonight, we are going with a strong level three on our exclusive abc seven news storm impact scale. flooding rain continues with those gusty winds. more downed trees and outages are likely with more mudslides as well, and the chance of thunderstorms. so 7:00 tonight you're still seeing some heavy rain in the east bay, the south bay, the santa cruz mountains at 8

p.m. as well. the storm is going to be slow to get out of here at 10 p.m. it's in the south bay, and then here comes some more showers behind this system. it's really going to be tomorrow morning where you see some brief downpours 530 in the morning in the north bay around the peninsula and into the east bay at 7 a.m. and south bay at 830. then you will get a chance to kind of enjoy some sunshine for the rest of the afternoon. for the big game. i think you're okay. and as we check out additional rainfall totals, anywhere from about a half an inch to over two inches of additional rain for most areas, there's going to be a couple of spots less than that and a couple more than that. winter storm warning until 4 p.m. tuesday. above 5500ft. i would not try to travel to the mountains right now. that is going through tuesday. 1 to 4ft of snow up to five feet for the peaks. it's going to be difficult to get around with chain controls, slick roadways, 40s and 50s on your morning temperatures. keep the umbrellas handy for the morning. for the afternoon, you'll need those shades as well. we're going

to be seeing highs in the 50s and the 60s. here's your accuweather seven day forecast. this level three storm drops down to a one tomorrow morning. showers and then some afternoon sun sunday later in the day we're going to be getting a level one system. that's nothing like what's going through. monday is a rainy day. tuesday scattered showers. both are ones right now, but that monday system looks to focus perhaps on te south bay and the santa cruz mountains. not a repeat of what we've experienced. so ama and dan drying out in time for thanksgiving, right? >> that will be good. thanks, sandhya. >> well, when we look at the storm's impact around the bay area, the north bay has been hit the hardest. for the second day in a row, sonoma county closed schools about 18 in total. today. it's due to, of course, to the rain. the wind, downed trees, dangerous road conditions and the flooding on the peninsula. several lanes of interstate 280 flooded. look at this. this was near john daly boulevard in daly city. the chp was out there helping guide cars around the worst of it. cars could still get through the

water, even though traffic was, as you can see, backed up in san francisco, there was a lot of street flooding. >> a flash flood warning just ended this afternoon. abc seven news reporter suzanne phan was in the city with the latest on the conditions there. >> reporter the storm hammered san francisco this afternoon, dumping a significant amount of rain on the city. >> there are certain neighborhoods that are going to flood down in the mission flats. i'm sure there are a couple of feet of water down there already. that's pretty intense, but it's a lot. we were downse, there and there was a lot of water going everywhere, so much water that it flooded streets in numerous neighborhoods. >> this is how it looked in one part of the marina district. here's how it looked in the mission district over by 23rd and dolores. and here's how it looked at pine and masonic streets all over san francisco. the deluge of rainwater is overflowing streets. san francisco public works says it's the first major storm of the season, and they've got their crews working hard. >> everyone kind of has their game plan for what we're doing. again, this is not new in san

francisco, but when the rains get really heavy and the winds start really howling, we do our best to keep up. but there is going to be some localized flooding. likely we are likely to see some trees come down. we just want to keep people safe. >> meanwhile, a lot of people are checking out the impact of the storm, very aware of the power of mother nature. >> we wanted to see how big the waves are, how are they? they've been pretty gnarly. they've almost hit 12ft a couple times and very stormy, very choppy out there. and yeah, the wind's been picking up a lot. >> and there was a wind warning on the bridge. so yeah, you just got to be careful and be alert. >> and tonight we are here in glen park where there was a small mudslide. so much rain fell in such a short period of time, it triggered this mudslide. now, fortunately, no one was hurt. and there were no homes around here that were threatened. but we do know that geotechnical engineer came out to study this area. and also that about a truckload of debris was taken away. and again, fortunately, no one was hurt here tonight in glen park. suzanne fawn, abc seven news. >> that's the most important

in addition to the one at city hall. this one is in oakland unified school district. >> the district says it needs to make cuts to close to close an almost $80 million deficit. >> abc seven news reporter anser hassan explains why the teachers unions think the district's numbers are way off. >> we want our school district to change course and move towards a budget that reflects the values that ousd claims to uphold. >> the oakland unified school district is facing a $78 million projected budget deficit and needs to make cuts, but the teachers union says the district's numbers aren't accurate. >> the claims of a crisis are based on projected spending levels that are wildly inflated. >> the oakland education association, which is the teacher's union, has been analyzing the district's budget. it claims spending is based on peak spending years during the pandemic, and that usd's budget

projection is made up of mae over budgeting. in two up of mae categories outside contracts like school bus services. >> the other books and supplies the district predicts that they will spend, on average, $92 million per year for each of the next three years. >> the union says based on spending from the past five years, the district has never spent more than $40 million in this category. but mike hutchinson, who is chair of the school board's budget and finance committee, disagrees with that analysis. >> at the last board meeting when we discussed this, and then at the last budget and finance committee meeting, nobody came and claimed that the numbers were were not accurate. >> hutchinson says the way the budget is structured, when the district gets money that doesn't have a defined budget code, it gets held in books and supplies until it moves into its allocated category. >> and so this idea that all of a sudden, the district plans on spending twice as much money on our books and supplies, if that's what they're presenting, it shows they have no idea how our budget works, and operates.

street level radar, the santa cruz mountains getting clobbered along with san mateo county. right now, rainfall rates 2000/200 of an inch per hour on the peninsula in the east bay, steady, moderate to heavy rain right now. piedmont. kensington berkeley street level radar. we do have a flash flood warning for parts of the east bay stretching from san leandro to hayward. we've already seen the flooding, and that's going to continue. san francisco those downpours we had earlier in the day, they're starting to let up a bit, although we're still getting that rain. it is going to continue around the los altos hills as well as this atmospheric river continues to move through the north bay, getting a little bit of an ease up in the rain. look at the rainfall so far. last 72 hours. venado over 22in. more than 17in in occidental. dan 22in. >> wow. impressive. it is. well, today's storm is bringing a lot of snow to the sierra palisades. tahoe officially opened today for the ski season. it's five days earlier than they planned, and you can track the weather in real time thanks to abc seven. take a

chief of staff, says supporters of the old sheriff are telling lies to bring her down and to stop the change that she's bringing to the department. sheriff christina corpus told me earlier this week that she's known victor j. >> for 17 years, and we are colleagues. i consider him a trusted confidant. >> a friend during all that time, did you and her ever become romantic? no. there's never been physical contact or a dating relationship. no. the longtime realtor became indispensable during corpus campaign for sheriff. that's him during a kickoff event with the candidate. but the audit commissioned by the county and performed by retired santa clara county judge ladoris cordell, cites one current employee at the millbrae sheriff's substation. she says when corpus worked there before she became sheriff, the employee saw her and i and j kissing, giving each other massages and making flirty jokes that made her uncomfortable. corpus. and now i and j say that's a lie, and i'm done with that. >> and i'm done. because this

has been played over and over just to smear her name. >> i did notice, and i've reported that most of the accusations, in terms of you and the sheriff being romantic, came from a single employee, correct? >> i don't want to get into uh- employee issues. i'm saying that her statements are not truthful. i believe she had an agenda behind them. >> let's talk about those 40 people that judge cordell interviewed. are you saying that most of those are supporters of the former sheriff bolanos? >> absolutely. i'm saying that uh- and a few of them are just scared for their job, because if you don't kiss the ring in this county, they will push you out. >> i and j was third in line as civilian chief of staff, reporting to undersheriff dan perea. from those interviews, the cordell report concluded i and j had major influence over the sheriff and that lies secrecy, retaliation, conflicts of interest and abuse of authority are the hallmarks of the corpus administration. >> obviously, it doesn't feel

know if that's factual or not. that they're going to fund her, and that's why she's doing this. she's disclosed this to a number of people, and j told me his work as a realtor and in personal protection stopped when corpus brought him on as chief of staff. >> i also asked about expensive gifts. the report accuses him of giving the sheriff. did you buy $11,000 diamond earrings and louboutin boots for the sheriff? no, i did not. >> where'd that come from? i have no idea. >> i also asked about donald trump's september 12 fundraising visit to woodside. the report says the campaign staff allowed the sheriff to designate two people for a photo with the now president elect. she picked a captain and a deputy, an fbi agent claims i and j approached, identified himself as chief of staff and said who? a deputy getting a photo over me. the report says he made a scene until he was allowed to take this picture. the main guy that was running the security, i knew him very well because i just come online, come in the line and take a picture with us and whatever else and ended up there.

>> the guy came up to me and goes, hey, you're not on the list. i'm like, yeah, who are you? i said, i'm the chief of staff. i'm. i'm here taking place at the sheriff's. okay. that's fine. whatever. >> just move forward with all of this flack with calls from the board of supervisors, the deputy sheriffs union, and the captains for the sheriff and her chief of staff to resign, victor j says he will not. >> i think the residents of this county deserve more. and that's what sheriff corpus has been fighting for. and in my opinion, i continue to encourage her and support her because at the end of all this, she's going to be victorious. >> i received a text late today from supervisor corzo saying it's all false, that she's receiving financial backing to pursue these accusations. meanwhile, i and j complains that judge cordell did little to verify the claims. one person who witnessed many of these alleged interactions was undersheriff dan pereira, and i understand that he was not interviewed for the audit, so he's up there on the chain of command. why not interview him? judge cordell did not do that. and by the way, judge cordell

today to 44,296. the nasdaq gained 31, closing above 19,000. the s&p went up 20 points. we are days away frm the start of another special legislative session in california that governor newsom called to trump proof the state. abc seven news reporter monica madden is following the story on what this might mean for california's relationship with trump. >> this time just feels different. i try to reach out to him. couldn't get through. and then we went back and forth. i called for the special session on his iheart radio podcast called politician governor gavin newsom says he tried reaching out to president elect trump after the election. i'm not complaining about anything. the last person i thought he'd pick up the phone was me. >> now, california lawmakers are gearing up for another special session to guardrail the state against another trump administration. it's not welcomed by all. no, it's complete theater, especially after trump gained ground in california. >> california republicans are only about 2,425% of registered voters, yet donald trump got nearly 40% of the vote in

california. and so it feels like donald trump has a better sense of what californians want. >> there may be a lot more trump supporters here, but that doesn't matter. i'm going to still have their backs. >> newsom, defending his stance at an unrelated press conference thursday, speaking about his relationship with trump when he was president. >> i was on the phone with him consistently late night, early morning, getting along, and he was assaulting and attacking this state, taking money from the people of the state of california. he asserted lawsuit after lawsuit and assault. after assault. so of course, regardless of whether or not we had a big hug at mar-a-lago or not, we need to prepare for that reality. >> saying his goal is to safeguard state policies for all californians. i care about people and i care about protecting them. >> their public safety and their public health. >> just not a good idea to have, you know, an acrimonious, you know, relationship between the

into street level radar right around and the east bay. milpitas. fremont. you will notice 680. we do have a flash flood warning until 745 for parts of the east bay. the santa cruz mountains and san jose, cupertino, los altos getting slammed by this atmospheric river heading into the santa cruz mountains. it is lighter but steady across the san francisco area, the peninsula and the north bay. looking at live pictures, you can see the rain is really coming down from our santa cruz camera. but wet views with this level three storm, it is a strong level three storm. it's going to hang around for a couple more hours. 730 to 8:00. you will notice the east and south bay are still sitting in it. 9 p.m. as well and then more showers will trail through. but not as intense going into tomorrow morning. high temperatures tomorrow afternoon with some sun breaking through 5060s. looking at the accuweather seven day forecast, we drop this to a level one tomorrow morning. some wet weather after that you're going to see some afternoon sun sunday afternoon evening. we have a level one with some showers not as strong monday a one, tuesday a one, and
