the bay area are cleaning up following major flooding slides and downed trees. good morning everybody. it's saturday, november 23rd. let's get right to your forecast. we were all hit with it, but really the north bay. >> oh my that was insane. 3 to 15in up in the north bay. and so they still have a flood warning for central sonoma through about 9:00 this morning. and we're watching the russian river at guerneville and johnson's beach. but yes, the atmospheric river has moved on and we are looking at some scattered light showers into the north bay around santa rosa. they certainly don't need it. penngrove saint helena. it is a weak level one system today. a few showers this morning. slick roadways less than 5/100 and then a nice sunny afternoon on the way today with some clouds. 50 in fremont we're looking at temperatures in the upper 40s in the north bay, and 24 hours ago we were milder with those south winds. those gusty winds 12 degrees cooler in livermore. so here's the way it's going to work out today. you can see a few showers there

from napa upper 50s to near 60 by 2:00. and you can't rule out a shower out by the delta. but by and large skies will be dry today. and that's going to take us through early sunday. still level one on sunday. it's another weak system. we'll talk about it. and a pretty nice thanksgiving outlook coming up stephanie. >> all right lisa thank you. well this is something you don't expect to see in san francisco. a slide sends mud flowing into the streets and into this neighborhood. this is over in the glen park area near interstate 280, which also saw some flooding. abc seven news reporter tara campbell talked to san francisco residents about this damage from fallen trees to flooded freeways and stranded cars, heavy rain and high winds pounding the peninsula and san francisco friday. >> how are the roads today? >> we're just coming to get some of the sandbags because they've got them ready to go for us. >> san francisco public works

extending its hours, workers helping residents get loaded up. >> so we're going to try to patch up a leaking ramp into a garage because it's flooding right now with all the water pooling up and pooling water wreaking havoc on friday night's commute from one flooded spot to the next in san mateo county, winds whipping and traffic slowed this person on a scooter trying to plow through the pouring rain while back in san francisco, crews cleaning up from this mudslide under 280 crashing down late this afternoon. >> we were commenting on how we appreciated how quickly the city was fixing it. actually, because it was looking a little scary earlier today with kind of all of the mud flowing into the street. >> a little jarring, a little apocalyptic. as we were, you know, going through our workday and looking outside the window. that's what we're seeing. yeah. you could see it from your house. yeah. >> the dog has been very curious by the backhoe all day. >> i was surprised it was so close to my house. so then i

started getting worried. >> and nearby residents taking precautions. >> i'm going to move my car away from the berm and tell my neighbors to do the same, just in case more dirt comes down. >> i'm seeing rain. >> meanwhile, scenes like this playing out across the city. >> we are cleaning all these catch basins, what you call storm drains. these catch basins to make sure all the. >> for now, public works will reopen today at 2 p.m. if you're looking to pick up sandbags and don't forget your proof of address here in san francisco to show them now, staying in the city this car was stuck in some wild flood waters in the design district. it was stalled there off the intersection of henry adams street and alameda street. it appears the driver got some help from a truck driver to get the car slowly pushed out of the high water, and the east bay got its share of rain. this is what it looked like yesterday afternoon in oakland, where it was really coming down in the umbrellas. there, as you can see, are out in marin county. several lanes of eastbound traffic were flooded along sir

francis drake boulevard. it appears a storm drain got clogged near the larkspur train station. a worker was attempting to clear it as cars tried to drive around. well, despite the rain, many activities went on as planned in the south bay. some people made it to enchant at paypal park in san jose. here's abc seven news south bay reporter lauren martinez. >> we're so thrilled to have enchant back in san jose. >> lights dazzled in the rain on opening night of enchant. >> this is the closest we're going to get to snow friday evening. >> families with umbrellas in hand journeyed through a maze of christmas lights inside paypal park. it may seem empty, but this is only night. one. last year, enchant christmas in san jose was the top performing location out of six. throughout the country. nick simons and his family drove from livermore. >> we came last year and then when we knew she was coming, we got tickets a long time ago.

>> we have our little sawyer here, so we thought she would like seeing all the lights tonight. oh, really? >> what does she think so far? >> she has been staring at them nonstop under the friday night lights. >> it was branham high school in campbell against sacred heart in the playoffs. >> i think the rain isn't necessarily getting me as much as like, the stress to know, just like i want them to win this game. so i'm not worried about the rain. >> parents are used to supporting an all types of weather. they said. thankfully it's not too cold, just wet. >> i felt like i was well prepared and i dressed for the snow with like my kids snow jacket and rain pants leggings. >> i have hand warmers, layers and rain boots. >> yeah. earlier in the night, san jose resident darrell eggers and his dog dempsey tried to go on their walk at the right time. >> i looked at the radar on my phone app and i saw it's going to get worse. between 6 and 8 p.m. and the dog has to go out. so let's go now before it gets even worse. he's an english labrador. he loves water. so no, i don't think it bothers him

complications there, so keep an eye out for changes if you plan to fly out today or tomorrow as we head into the thanksgiving week. triple a has provided an insight into the very best travel times for you and your family. roads and airports are expected to be more crowded this year, with nearly 80 million people set to travel this week for the holiday. the faa is expecting over 50,000 flights and despite thanksgiving being later this week, experts are saying to prepare early thanksgiving is the busiest travel holiday of all. >> this is the time of year when most people travel, so already you're comparing a very high number from last year. the fact that last year was a record and that we're even going to surpass that this year means a lot. >> roads are expected to be crowded, too, with millions driving to their holiday destinations. people are leaving earlier this year, with many choosing to head out on tuesday and coming back on monday to avoid major traffic. it also may not cost as much to fill up your tank this year. the national

average for a gallon of regular unleaded gas is at $3.05. that's over $0.20 lower than last year. new developments in the case against protesters who blocked traffic on the golden gate bridge back in april. the san francisco chronicle is reporting a judge has thrown out most of those charges against them. the group was protesting the israel-hamas war. 32 of the 44 charges against the protesters have been dismissed, most of them counts of false imprisonment. however, some federal conspiracy charges still remain open. one defendant's case was dismissed entirely. four lawsuits have been filed against the martinez refining company over the 2022 thanksgiving day chemical release. that's when a flare up sent thick white ash raining down on nearby neighborhoods. the lawsuits were filed on behalf of 700 residents who say their health has been severely impacted by the refinery's repeated discharge of toxic chemicals. an infant is dead

following a listeria outbreak impacting yusheng brand ready to eat meat and poultry products. the infant's mother also tested positive for listeria. the family is from california and the cdc says there have been 11 cases of listeria linked to this outbreak. those cases are across four states. yusheng food has recalled more than 72,000 pounds of food due to possible contamination. oakland's teachers union wants the school district to rethink how it's approaching its projected $78 million budget deficit. one of the plans being considered is merging ten schools. the oakland education association said this would disrupt students learning. it also says previous closures did not save the district any money and led to declining enrollment. >> we are seeing growing administration, central office and contracts while our teachers

are doing more with less, and this has been going on for years. usd has continued to push more cuts to schools and balance the budget with discriminatory closures. >> usd says the mergers would save the district $3 million. the union feels the district is inflating the amount of the budget deficit, basing it on peak spending during the pandemic rather than during typical years. the board will vote on the plan next month. on the peninsula now, a deal has been reached, ending a labor dispute between samtrans and bus operators. the san mateo county transit district's board of directors approved the latest four year contract, affecting about 400 union operators. members will receive close to a 4% average raise each year. the contract also includes pay adjustments for jobs, and samtrans says those jobs were below market value. operators had been working without a contract since the end of june. well, if you have plans to head

up to lake tahoe, you may want to wait a few days. the greater lake tahoe area and sierra counties are experiencing high winds and could see up to two feet of snow. officials are preparing for icy conditions on the roads. if you do need to travel, officials recommend allowing extra time for your trip and monitor road conditions. and lisa, that area is getting a lot of action right now. right. you're tracking the latest. >> oh yeah. we're seeing a mix of rain and snow. now we're going to get some colder air in behind the system, which is good news. but it had been rain yesterday with temperatures in the 40s. so we are looking at things changing again but for the better for the bay area because yeah, we just had quite a go of it with anywhere from seven inches nearly a record daily rainfall in santa rosa to over 15 on the western side of sonoma county. so here's a look at that atmospheric river out of here. and what's left is some scattered light showers up in

the north bay there. so this is where we're still looking at some flooding concerns. certainly around guerneville, johnson's beach, the russian river and the scattered light showers here. but you'll notice the rest of the bay really quiet with just some cloudy skies. and there's our flood warning until tomorrow morning. so you can see from jenner, monte, rio and guerneville. still looking at some rising creeks and streams for the next 24 hours. speaking of that, look at the rainfall. just trying to update these now. 2.65. half moon bay, the last 24 hours over four inches mount tam, nearly three inches santa rosa. look at that. 2.46 in oakland and livermore coming in at nearly three quarters of an inch and about an inch, and a half in hayward. so really unbelievable numbers there, 40s and some upper 40s and low 50s out there this morning. it's much cooler anywhere from a couple degrees to about 10 to 12

degrees cooler from hayward mountain view and livermore this morning. and that's all due to the system exiting and some cooler air behind it. we had all those southerly winds keeping us mild and everything quite gusty throughout the last couple of days. here we are 8:00 this morning. scattered light showers. the potential is there and then we'll look for partly cloudy conditions right on through sunday at about noontime when we get another wave of few light showers. still a level one system. you'll see by 9:00 a smattering of light rain and the next system, arriving on monday, looks to focus to the south of us, so we'll be looking at some heavier rain for the central coast and southern california, keeping us on the back side of it right on through about tuesday. so rainfall amounts throughout the weekend notice very light. just a couple hundredths here. that's some good news. and our winter storm warning continues for the west slopes of the sierra nevada greater lake tahoe. this is about 5500ft above 7000ft. you get a couple feet, but only a

into and out of sfo. number three, san francisco residents can pick up sandbags today from public works. at 2 p.m, the city saw major flooding in neighborhoods and even landslides. some of the worst flooding was near interstate 280. number four president elect donald trump revealed his picks to fill seven more positions in his cabinet. among those, johns hopkins professor marty mccarey for the fda, former congressman and doctor dave weldon to lead the cdc. number five israeli airstrikes have killed at least 11 people and injured dozens in central beirut as diplomats tried to broker a ceasefire. the lebanese health ministry said the death toll could rise as emergency responders look for survivors. strikes also continued in gaza. number six, the texas board of education approved a new k through five curriculum allowing bible teachings in classrooms. the instructional materials, called bluebonnet learning, are

live now at 530. you are waking up to slick roads this morning. we're taking a live look from our golden gate bridge camera. the cleanup efforts underway across the bay area after that series of storms. yeah, it was incredible. >> and we're finally getting a chance to dry out. although we still have a flood warning for central sonoma and the russian river up at guerneville and johnson's beach. but notice the atmospheric river just falling apart as it moves into southern california. here's a look at a few light showers from hopland. highway one, fort ross. and then as we take you down further to the south there, looking around

saint helena, yountville, glen ellen and those are the areas that certainly are having some problems with the creek streams and even the rivers. so a few showers. level one slick roadways less than 5/100 throughout the day today. right now it's 50 in fremont and palo alto where it's cloudy, 49 sonoma. and we're going to see the temperatures not only cooler today, but right now we are 5 to 12 degrees colder. that's due to those south winds exiting the area. and as we go through the next couple of hours notice clouds will part. we're partly cloudy with temperatures from the upper 50s to the low 60s. this is 3:00 in the afternoon, maybe a sprinkle or two up in the north bay, but overall we are getting into a drier trend today. tomorrow we have pretty much the same. a mix of clouds and sun and a few showers will detail that for you and the week ahead in a few minutes. steph. all right. >> thank you. in rohnert park, two cars got stuck in high waters on redwood drive. one person was stuck in their car as city services continued to work

to mitigate flooding and close affected roads nearby. now they're warning residents to avoid, of course, going in any standing water or around the flood signs. people are urged to only use 9-1-1 for emergencies as they've been overwhelmed with calls in the area. the sonoma county fire district says it had to rescue two people in this jeep after they drove onto a closed road because of flooding. the driver and passenger were not hurt. in guerneville, people are moving to higher ground because of the rising russian river, which is causing severe flooding. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard gives us a closer look pretty soon, and by this evening, it'll be like three feet of water in here. >> olivia lindauer and her father are wasting no time moving her house trailer out of downtown guerneville. her neighborhood could be under several feet of water by saturday. >> i mean, it's not as big of a pain as moving your entire house that doesn't have wheels on it, but it's still not fun, that's

for sure. all right, let's go, let's go. >> brianna homes is already on the move to higher ground with her trailer. >> just like getting uprooted from your home and stuff. have to go find somewhere else to live for a few days. >> pet care. all of it. >> i might even probably gonna miss work tomorrow, too, so that's unfortunate. >> super stressful. >> it's so stressful. it's probably the. it's probably the most stress i could have. are you okay up there? >> some guerneville neighborhoods are starting to flood. firefighters going door to door, checking on residents. all eyes on the russian river, which is expected to reach flood stage soon. >> it's in monitor stage now, but it's looking at this time to be about at 34ft. so as you can see, the neighborhood we're in, this is a pretty good indicator to us. these are the first areas that start to flood for us from some of the creeks. >> but it's nice. it's high up there. so hopefully we don't get water, won't get us water won't get us. >> everything that isn't nailed down is being moved up and away from the floor. at the surrey glamping resort, the resident cat is also ready for transport.

the resort sits on a low lying spot where flooding is almost guaranteed. >> today we're just having the staff basically clear everything out and then, you know, if the flood waters come up, you know we'll clean up, put the tents back up before next season and we'll be ready to go. >> an rv on the property got stuck in the rising water and mud in nearby healdsburg. heavy rain caused this mudslide on buena vista drive. city crews are waiting for drier weather before they can shore up the hillside. back in guerneville, it's time for neighbors to move out in a couple days home. >> don't go anywhere in sonoma county. >> cornell, bernard abc seven news. >> in the east bay, college football fans are prepping for a very wet game today. it's the 127th big game at cal and both teams and their fans are committed to the tradition despite the wet weather. it's one of the biggest football games of the year between the bears and the stanford cardinal. >> we're ready. we have our ponchos, so we're ready for the

atmospheric river or whatever they call it these days. so we're good. >> some of the events on campus have been canceled due to the weather. while flood warnings have expired in berkeley, there is still expected to be rain and gusty winds throughout the day. despite the setback, students and fans say they don't expect to kill the energy for the game, and kickoff is at 1230 today. now to the south bay. the wet weather comes as setups continue for christmas in the park to open next week, and we got a look at the work being done to protect the festive structures while they're still being constructed. here's abc seven news south bay reporter zach fuentes. >> the rain is not going to ruin this san jose holiday tradition, so we open on the day after thanksgiving on november 29th. >> the rainy days are my most favorite days in the park because there's fewer people here and all of the lights just kind of glisten and it's just magical. so that's what i think people should come down here. >> still, precautions are taken

to protect the beautiful displays. >> we're prepping for the rain. we're putting sandbags out just to protect some of our displays. but all these displays are designed and built to be in the rain, the wind, the sun. and they're going to be just fine. >> and it's not just christmas in the park that's focus on the sandbags. valley water making sandbags like these available at stations throughout the county. they're asking residents right now to stay alert. >> we've been messaging out to the public to make sure that they're prepared. as you know, the wet season starts. so we're asking everybody to make sure that they have an emergency plan in place in case there is flooding. >> san jose resident dan mccarthy taking no chances and making sure his family doesn't either. >> my son's got a got a shed in the back that has a low point by the by the door. so i thought i'd take a little preventive action today. >> right now, the hope from officials is that the rain will have as minimal of an impact as possible on residents like mccarthy and his son, and instead bring benefits. >> we're hopeful that this will

new picks. >> president elect trump continues to announce top jobs for his next administration at a rapid pace friday evening, filling key roles for treasury secretary trump, offering billionaire scott bassett. bassett, the founder of a hedge fund, has advised trump on economic policy. trump's pick to head the budget office, russell vought, who served in the same role during trump's first term and was coauthor of project 2025 for labor secretary trump, nominating oregon representative lori chavez-deremer. those appointments come after trump picked a new attorney general, pam bondi, the former florida attorney general turned lobbyist. her nomination came after matt gaetz withdrew his name from consideration after gaetz had been under scrutiny amid sexual misconduct allegations. gaetz was one of several members of congress nominated for a trump cabinet position, but is the only one to resign from congress pending confirmation friday. he said he doesn't plan to go back. >> i'm going to be fighting for

less than 5/100, maybe a 10th up in santa rosa, but we are behind the heaviest rain. here's a look at live doppler seven right now. up to 118% of normal for san francisco. and how about 364% of normal in santa rosa with over 15 and a third inches of rain. so far for the season. so rain shadow effect in the south bay, allowing for about 25% of normal in san jose. and we continue to see some light showers, not only today, the next several days. so we're not turning it off totally, but enough so that we can definitely clean up and allow for the street, the streams and creeks to recede. even up in the north bay, there in sonoma county, guerneville, johnson's beach, we'll see that cresting later on today and still a flood warning, but very light returns here on live doppler seven so you can see up towards sonoma highway one

certainly where they don't need it. but overall we are quiet this morning and we'll get into dry conditions. in fact, looking at some sun for the rest of your saturday, here's the warning area from jenner and out towards guerneville here, where we're still looking at the russian river coming up to about 35ft. now, flood stage is around 32ft, so it will continue to rise causing moderate flooding. and then recede even with the showers that are still to come the next several days, because they will be very light anywhere from 2.98in in san francisco, the last 24 hours, over three and a half in san rafael, 2.87 santa rosa, san jose picked up a half inch and livermore 0.701.53, in hayward, redwood city, an inch and a third. and as you know, this all came down in a short period of time. so the soil not really able to absorb a lot of this along the peninsula and the east bay.

while up in the north bay we had the lighter rain and then just way too much rain. 49 in sonoma, 52 in vallejo. and you saw those mudslides. so we certainly need a break out there. five degrees cooler in half moon bay, 12 degrees cooler in san jose. let's plot it all out for you today. 830 notice maybe a light sprinkle or two, but we're already looking at a little bit of sunshine the rest of the day. partly cloudy. it will be certainly a nice day out there for the game over in berkeley and into your sunday, you'll see a few showers returning up to the north bay. this is noontime. the rest of us will be dry, but then by later on in the day this is 930 at night. a few light showers. so another level one. the next system focusing to the south of us. so we'll be on the periphery looking at still a level one, a few light showers. that's monday into tuesday as well. and then after that it looks like we do get a break. so adding up the rainfall amounts throughout the weekend pretty light. maybe a 10th or more to the north of us. and trace amounts elsewhere. winter storm

nationwide on wednesday in oahu, hawaii. george pennacchio for abc news. >> all right. one of san francisco's cutest holiday traditions is back. the adoptable puppies and kittens from the spca are on display in the windows of macy's. you can check them out wednesdays through sundays from noon to 6 p.m. through december 31st. the spca is waiving all adoption fees for cats and dogs five months and older, and this year's goal is finding homes for 600 animals. pretty neat. and as a part of the unveiling, macy's presented a $5,000 donation to the spca. the annual life sized gingerbread house at the fairmont here in san francisco is also back. the house is made of hundreds of real gingerbread bricks baked by the fairmont pastry team, and see's candy, a ribbon cutting and tree lighting ceremony will be held today at 11 a.m. merchants in san francisco's chinatown are
