and as millions of americans gather with friends and family for thanksgiving, some bad news you don't want to hear. whooping cough cases are on the rise across the country. what you need to know and the latest on the flu, covid, and rsv. cases are up in some states. >> gio: but we do begin with intense weather hitting both coasts this weekend. snowfall totals over 20 inches, plus significant flooding and more is on the way. so let's get the latest from abc's melissa adan in santa rosa, california. right now. melissa, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, gio. well, we can see the impact of days' worth of rain. you can hear the rushing water from a creek that runs through downtown santa rosa. now, fire officials tell us, this is about six feet deep, and it's just one example out in northern california of the flooding we're seeing and, of course, of the severe weather we're watching coast to coast. this morning, northern california hammered with more than 17 inches of rain since tuesday. firefighters going door to door

checking on residents in flood-prone areas. water rescues under way. the sonoma county fire district rescuing two people trapped inside this jeep in the high floodwaters. >> and just like this right they're going to come across a hazard like this and can't get over to the other side or have to reroute. >> in an instant you could have an emergency rescue. >> you could. >> reporter: the bay area experiencing flash flooding. san francisco's airport seeing major flight delays and cancellations ahead of the thanksgiving holiday. in the northeast, the massive cleanup under way after the first snowfall of the season slammed the region. in pennsylvania, power lines down, trees shutting down roads and causing massive backups. trucks stuck in the snow after authorities shut off a 50-mile stretch of interstate 84 from outside scranton to the new york border for some time. in northern new york, crews went from battling wildfires to snow in just days. >> oh, i wasn't prepared for

this at all. >> reporter: in northwest new jersey, snow-covered roads and sporadic power outages in warren county. the wintry conditions stretching down to tennessee where the state opened warming centers for those who need shelter. now, back out here in the west, while we're finally going to get a break from this relentless rain, the city officials here in santa rosa tell us, look, it's actually helped them prepare, these latest rounds of rain, checking out how the rivers are preparing for the worst to come during our wet winter months. whit? >> whit: melissa, thank you so much. let's get the forecast from somara theodore. somara, it's going to be a messy and stormy week ahead for the holiday. >> somara: so, whit, i want to start with the east coast. here's the storm system that brought the first snowfall of the season. not as strong today. leftover alerts in the appalachian mountains. blizzard warnings for parts of west virginia. meanwhile, out west, we're monitoring these two storm

systems getting ready to slam the coastline there. the atmospheric river not quite as strong, so like melissa mentioned, a little bit of a reprieve from the rainfall, but a lot of those rivers are still swoemen so places like santa rosa, flooding still an issue, and in the next five days, we're anticipating some snowfall from this atmospheric river. in fact, some parts of the sierra could see three to five feet of snow. that's a look at the forecast, janai, back to you. >> janai: she said three to five feet. all right, somara, thank you. this as millions of americans are getting ready to drive and fly in the next few days and are keeping a close eye on that forecast. record travel volume expected. abc's morgan norwood is here. morgan, we said it at the top of the show. pack your patience, because a lot of people out there. >> that's exactly right. from the roads to the skies we are looking at a wild holiday travel season, as somara just pointed out, and severe weather on both coasts threatening to uproot it all. airports are bracing for the crush. the tsa says they'll screen 18.3 million people starting on tuesday. that's the projected get out

day. 50,000 flights will take off. the agency is also urging travelers to brush up on the rules before they go, so those foods like gravy, cranberry sauce, wine and jams, all that must be checked if it's more than 3.4 ounces. our airlines are locked in too. united says it will be their busiest season ever. 6 million. american is looking at 8.3, and experts say, to beat the congestion, consider flying out early morning. if you are driving to thanksgiving dinner, listen up, you will not be alone. aaa is expecting some 80 million americans will hit the road, and it may not cost you as much to fill up. good news there. the national average for a gallon of gas, 3.05, and that's down from 3.26. gio? >> gio: a lot of people on the road. thank you so much. the coming holiday isn't slowing down the trump transition. the president-elect filling a number of slots overnight including billionaire scott bessent to lead the treasury department. abc's white house correspondent maryalice parks joins us now from washington. maryalice, good morning.

>> reporter: gio, that's right. several announcements overnight, scott bessent, a relatively more moderate choice for treasury secretary. other picks more controversial including the co-author of that ultra conservative blueprint for the transition project 2025. a friday night flurry of announcements from president-elect donald trump. first, his nomination for the top economic post, trump selecting wall street veteran billionaire scott bessent for treasury secretary, writing in his announcement that bessent will help me usher in a new golden age for the united states. bessent worked for years for democratic megadonor george soros, but has also been a prolific fund-raiser for trump. >> this is a trump economy. this is a trump stock market. >> reporter: in recent months advocating for deregulation and expanded energy production. if confirmed, he'd be the first openly gay treasury secretary and have to tackle major issues around trump's proposed tax cuts and tariffs. trump choosing nfl veteran and fox commentator

scott turner for housing and urban development. and in the health care space trump picking another florida native, dave weldon, to lead the centers for disease control and prevention, a powerful agency that sets vaccine standards. similar to robert f. kennedy jr., weldon had been skeptical of vaccine research and how the government tracks adverse reactions. to lead the food and drug administration, dr. marty makary, a fox news regular who pushed back against covid lockdown. >> we've got poisoned food supplies. we've got pesticides, ultra processed foods. >> reporter: in one of his more controversial decisions, trump bringing back his longtime adviser, sebastian gorka, to the white house to serve as a senior director for counterterrorism at the national security council, a close alley of trump strategist, steve bannon, gorka has doubted the threat of white nationalism in the country and pushed for pardons of january 6th rioters. >> anyone who didn't, you know, hit a policeman or, you know, break through the doors actually completely a full and unconditional pardon, absolutely. >> reporter: now trump also naming oregon congresswoman

lori chavez-deremer for labor secretary in a nod to unions and bringing back russ vought to run the office of budget and management, the key architect of project 2025, the conservative plan to overhaul the government. >> whit: maryalice, thank you so much. and the president-elect will not be sentenced next tuesday as scheduled on his conviction in the new york hush money case. judge juan merchan formally adjourned sentencing asking both sides to expand on their arguments over the next two weeks. trump's lawyers arguing the conviction should be thrown out to ensure a smooth transition. prosecutors saying they are willing to delay sentencing until trump leaves office to respect the jury verdict. judge merchan will have the final say. janai? >> janai: all right. now to the education board in texas approving a plan that allows bible teachings in classrooms. abc's christiane cordero joins us now live in washington. christiane, good morning to you. certainly testing the boundaries of the separation between church and state.

>> reporter: it sure is, janai, and george to you. just to show you how contentious this is, the texas board of education held a meeting on it earlier this week. more than 100 people showed up to weigh in. this morning, for the first time ever, public school curriculum infused with bible lessons will be allowed and rewarded. >> 8-7, the motion passes. >> reporter: the texas board of education narrowly approved new state authorized curriculum 2.3 million public school students for kindergarten through fifth grade starting next year. material being taught includes the golden rule, using lessons from the bible and referring to the bible as a series of ancient texts. >> the way that they're taught, they're taught in a setting that children can study the bible as a piece of literature, which it has been recognized as for so many years in the western world. >> reporter: but the material pulls from christianity more than any other religion. critics say it alienates students of other faiths and violates the first amendment. >> church/state separation is

the shield that protects religious freedom for all of us. >> reporter: the curriculum that passed is optional, but schools that use the material stand to gain at least $40 per student in extra funding. >> what do you anticipate the next steps will be? >> well, for one we're urging all superintendents across the state of texas not to implement this unconstitutional curriculum. public schools are not sunday schools, and our lawyers are standing by. >> reporter: it's the latest in a republican-led push likely to face legal challenges. louisiana was set to place the ten commandments in all public schools until a federal judge blocked it this month. oklahoma's top education official ordered teachers to include the bible in fifth through 12th grade lessons. a group of teachers and parents filed a lawsuit to stop it. if successful, texas could become a model for other states given the incoming administration's promise to champion christian conservative

values and the conservative leaning supreme court. at the very least, each state is putting to the test the separation of church and state in the classroom. gio? >> gio: absolutely. a lot of people watching that, christiane. thank you so much. now to burglaries at the home of major sports stars, the nba and nhl joining the nfl in urging players to tighten security at their homes, and abc's aaron katersky is following this story. >> reporter: this morning, following a rash of burglaries targeting professional athletes, the nba and nhl are joining the nfl urging players to upgrade their home security systems and keep images of their personal life off the internet. an nba memo obtained by abc news says the fbi suspects sophisticated south american theft groups are behind the burglaries at the homes of bucks forward bobby portis. >> while i was at my game yesterday, i had a home invasion, and they took most of my prized possessions. >> reporter: and timberwolves guard mike conley was at a vikings game hyping up the crowd when his home ras robbed. to protect themselves, the leagues are urging players to

vet contractors doing work at their houses, and utilize dogs for home protection. the memo says, the burglars deploy advanced systems, things like drones and signal-jamming devices and install an updated alarm system though it notes in most incidents the homes were equipped with alarm systems that were not activated. the thieves have targeted the homes of chiefs star patrick holmes and travis kelce focused on stealing cash, jewelry, handbags and watches and tells abc news they recovered one of kelce's stolen watches in rhode island. for "good morning america," aaron katersky, abc news, new york. >> whit: and our thanks to aaron for that report. we turn now to the rising number of whooping cough cases across the country, the most in years. abc's ike ejiochi is here with what parents need to know. ike, good morning to you. >> reporter: yeah, good morning, whit. this is concerning. the national numbers for cases of whooping cough have hit the highest levels in over a decade,

and according to the cdc, there have been over 25,000 cases of whooping cough across the country so far this year, and these numbers are likely an undercount due to delays in reporting cases to the cdc. now, the state with the most number of cases, pennsylvania, followed by new york, wisconsin, illinois, california, and washington. the cdc says the early symptoms of whooping cough can seem like a common cold. it's not until later you get those rapid violent and uncontrolled coughing fits. the illness is known for the whoop noise when someone gasps for air after a coughing fit. now, the best way to protect yourself from this is to get vaccinated according to the cdc, whit. >> whit: and, ike, what about some of the other illnesses that we see cropping up this time of year? >> reporter: you know, whit, it is a multifaceted story. according to the cdc, cases of the flu, covid and rsv remain low nationally, but rsv activity is elevated and increasing in the southern and eastern parts of the country. the government agency says young children are the most impacted in the rise with those aged 0 to 4 experiencing the highest rates

of e.r. visits and hospitalizations. janai? >> janai: important to keep in mind, ike, thank you. i know so many parents out there like me thinking about all this with the 7, 4, and 1-year-old. i have too many kids. now to the number of e. coli keyses -- cases expanding after back-to-back outbreaks. 167,000 pounds of ground beef, fresh and frozen, have now been recalled due to potential e. coli contamination. the meat was distributed by detroit-based wolverine packing company and has a use by date of november 14th. health officials say at least 15 people in minnesota have been sickened including two who were hospitalized. meantime, authorities are expanding that e. coli recall of bagged carrots from grimmway farms after one person died. at least 15 were hospitalized. it gets hard to keep track of all of the recalls and everything. >> gio: it really is. >> whit: all right before thanksgiving. >> janai: exactly, oh, my gosh.

>> whit: people are going shopping with their families. >> janai: add that to the sickness. we got a lot to keep track of. we got it for you. time for a check of the weather, and somara has that too. >> somara: i have your holiday forecast. first we got to see what's been going on. we are headed to sugar bowl, california. look at all this snow. it kind of looks like -- you know when you see an ice cream sandwich where the top is off, i'm just so hungry this morning. so, thanksgiving week, let's get into it. everyone wants to know what's going to happen. we've got some heavy mountain snow for the sierra, we talked about that earlier. three to five feet over the next couple of days in the sierra nevada mountains out towards the west. meanwhile, on the east coast on tuesday, we are looking at another storm system that could bring heavy rain to places like new york city, those big airports like dulles and reagan. now, by thursday, this is thanksgiving day, look at what we're dealing with. we're dealing with rain throughout the southeast, look where the snow is situated. ohio, pennsylvania, parts of upstate new york. as far as the cities go along the east coast, maybe not as

abc7 news starts right now. >> good morning, i'm stephanie sierra. we're following new developments in the case against protesters who blocked traffic on the golden gate bridge back in april. the chronicle reports a judge has thrown out most of the charges against them. 32 in fact, of the 44 charges against those protesters have been dismissed, most of them counts of false imprisonment. however, some federal conspiracy charges still remain. one defendant's case was dismissed entirely on the peninsula. a deal has been reached ending a labor dispute between samtrans and bus operators. the san mateo county transit district's board of directors approved the latest four year contract, affecting about 400 union operators. members will receive close to 4%
