with congressman mike waltz who trump tapped to be his incoming national security adviser as well as other members of president-elect's incoming national security team there in palm beach, florida. for months on the campaign trail candidate trump was openly dismissive of nato. he complained that partners were leeching off the u.s. he threatened not to defend allies that he thought were not paying enough. in february, he went as far as to say to encourage russia to do whatever they want to a nato partner who doesn't pay enough in their own defense spending. now, of course, the cornerstone of the nato alliance is the idea that an attack on one would be an attack on all. this meeting comes as trump continues to work fast to round out his incoming team. he nominated brooke rollins to be agriculture secretary. whit? >> whit: maryalice parks, thank you so much. let's bring in our chief washington correspondent jonathan karl who will be hosting "this week" later on this morning. jon, always great to see you.

so let's jump right into it with the eagles. they're heading to los angeles tonight to take on the rams. eagles, they're looking pretty good. six-game win streak. what do the rams need to do to pull off a win here? >> well, defensively they have to shut down saquon barkley. i mean, he is really the guy that makes this offense go. we know about jalen hurts and everyone else, but it's the runner and his ability to catch the ball as well, and if you are on the other side of it, if you are the rams, you got to protect matthew stafford and try to get the ball to cooper kupp and nacua because they have a very good offensive attack when stafford can stay in the pocket. and throw the football. so that will be the test for the eagles. can they put pressure on stafford and can saquon barkley get it going? that's going to be very important. >> janai: all right, coach. paisley and plaid this morning, the arizona cardinals. they're holding a slim one-game lead over the remaining three teams in the nfc west. the cardinals visit the seahawks today which will be a huge game to decide the division down the line. what does each team have to do

to win with so much? >> well, if you are the cardinals, james conner is the big running back and kyler murray doesn't get a lot of credit. he's a fabulous quarterback and he's making a lot of plays. it goes through conner, the big running back, he is a big runner, can catch the football as well. i think on the other side of it, if you are geno smith, you have to protect the football. you cannot turn the ball over, especially when you're playing a team as capable as the arizona cardinals. they have a pretty good defense as well. so this will be a big game. you're right. it's a conference game. right now if you look at this conference, the arizona cardinals are the best team. we didn't say that in the beginning of the year, did we? we thought it was going to be the 49ers, the rams, seattle. arizona is the most consistent team in this conference right now. >> janai: i like that you say we. >> whit: the most wins for my 49ers. it's been rough. >> gio: let's turn with who's with herm? we love our segment. we were all winners last week by picking the texans over the cowboys. let's look at the talley right now. whit's got nine. >> whit: sure do. >> gio: janai's got eight.

overall covid, flu, low. we're likely to see a rise in that after thanksgiving. rsv is increasing, and unfortunately we also have a rise in the rate of whooping cough which is causing that chronic, long cough especially young kids and toddlers. >> janai: so you see how close we're all sitting. in the next week, all of us americans are going to be sitting even closer with so many more people for the holidays and everything. what is the best way to stay healthy? >> dr. darien: preparation and prevention. when we talk about preventing for example, making sure that especially those who are high-risk or up to date on flu, covid vaccines. rsv, which is rising we just saw, has a vaccine that's available over the age of 75. and we also recommend, for example, for pregnant mothers in their third trimester, especially if your baby is going to be born into the viral season, and then making sure you're grabbing that mask and grabbing those surveillance tests, and i always say before you meet during thanksgiving, prepare for the most vulnerable person, and that will help keep you safe. >> whit: when she talked about how close we were, i was, like, all right. >> dr. darien: she said we're going to be closer next week. >> whit: avoid those droplets.

we have also been hearing about a number of food recalls that have been in the news. these e.coli outbreaks and organic carrots, ground beef. there was also a listeria outbreak as well. as everybody is going to the grocery store and doing their shopping for thanksgiving, what should we keep in mind? >> dr. darien: number one, being aware. checking fda.gov, you can see use by dates and sell by dates. most of the products that have been recalled are not on shelves. so you don't have to have that fear. but if you have your freezer like my mom probably owns or if you have stuff in your pantry you want to make sure that you don't need to throw them out. you want to clean, separate, chill, and then making sure you're mindful of those temperatures. when you are cooking that meat, especially if you are going to bring it during that potluck, you do not want to be the reason everyone gets sick. so make sure you prepare properly. >> janai: 100%. >> gio: you have pea-can pie or pecan pie? >> dr. darien: pea-can. >> gio: the doctor has spoken. >> whit: it's now, like, an official tie. we got a tie between pea-can and pecan. america has spoken, ladies and gentlemen. the division continues.
