playing out in san mateo county sheriff's office. now at five, we're hearing from the man at the center of the controversy and getting creative to give back in the bay area. >> a devastating fire did not stop this church from helping its neighbors in need. now a temporary solution offers a silver lining. >> good morning. it is monday, november 25th.g. it is monday, >> how's the timing on that rain? >> hi. yeah. so today it's a level one. the rain is not intense. it's just going to be with us through much of the morning. and early afternoon. live doppler seven is showing you it's the southern half of the viewing area that is seeing the steady rain for the most part in the north bay right now, some light, isolated drizzle, but it's the peninsula and parts of the east bay that have some isolated downpours that have developed. let's go down to street level on live doppler seven around redwood city. crossing the san mateo bridge, you have an isolated downpour. it's a similar story in livermore, right now, but what you'll notice is that the bulk of this moisture actually aimed at the central coast. so what that means we do expect the highest rainfall totals in

the south bay today, with lower amounts as you head north, but it is a level one. today we're tracking scattered showers. some isolated downpours. the highest rainfall totals will be in the south bay, but most rainfall will be less than a half of an inch over the next 24 hours. winds out of the southeast about 5 to 20mph. no wind advisories in effect. just all day today we have these light showers throughout the morning and into the early afternoon. we'll likely see some drier patterns as we head into the evening, but we do have some more showers to talk about here tomorrow. as well. rainfall totals again, very light in nature. highest rainfall totals will be found in the south bay. let's check in with sue and see how those roads are doing this morning. >> good morning drew. good morning everyone. it is mon. i thought we'd check in on your mass transit and changes for the thanksgiving holiday. caltrain will be on a weekend modified schedule on thursday and friday. golden gate transit no ferry service on thanksgiving and then you are back to weekend holiday for thursday and friday. bart is on a sunday schedule on thursday, a

regular schedule on friday. you can see the wetness and the rain coming down, the more intense rain and the oranges and yellows. we do have an accident partially blocking the left lane. this is north 680, in pleasant hill and the ramp to. 242. just partially blocked. i'm not seeing much slowing in the area, so thank you. >> americans are expected to set a new travel record this week. the airlines and the a getting ready for that. here's abc news reporter morgan norwood. >> powerful storms threatening to dump chaos on what's expected to be the busiest thanksgiving travel season ever. millions of americans already on the move. >> i thought it was like beating the crowds, but apparently i'm not. >> the tsa bracing for tuesday when some 50,000 flights will take off. the faa already opening special airspace used by the military off the east coast and gulf of mexico. a steady stream of passengers here at newark liberty airport. it will be a critical test for the faa as they grapple with the shortage of air traffic controllers. it's impacting operations here and also across the northeast. >> we will use traffic flow

additional 400 flights per day just to accommodate the demand. morgan norwood, abc news, newark, new jersey. >> and if you're heading to the lake tahoe area for the holiday. a winter storm warning is now in effect until 4:00 wednesday morning. this is a live look at i-80 at castle peak, where stretches of the freeway are wet but mostly clear of snow. overnight. there were no chain restrictions on i-80 or highway 50, but that can change quickly. the national weather service is warning that more snow is coming, and that could make driving difficult to impossible over the next couple of days. now, despite the stormy weather, plenty of people will be heading to tahoe this week for thanksgiving. the sports basement in san francisco's marina district tells abc seven news. business has been up the past few days, with people coming in to buy ski equipment. so if you are braving the snow and icy roads, make sure to prepare yourself for a treacherous drive. >> have your chains, your chain

wednesday to saturday in placer county, the search is on for two men who were swept away in the american river saturday night. >> it happened south of auburn, the sheriff's office says three men went to the area to fish. two of them got into the water and one of them was swept away, and the second was pulled in by the current. when he tried to help, both men were in their 20s. first responders searched the area, but so far have not found them. >> for months we've been following the story of a san francisco church devastated by fire. the church, which is in the mission district, also provided shelter for unhoused people. abc seven news reporter tara campbell shows us how the church is finding solutions to keep up that work. >> this was the scene this spring at saint john evangelist episcopal church, the historic mission district building burned inside and out. >> the suspected arson forcing the congregation outside. >> there have been challenges for sure. worshiping outside and suboptimal weather is difficult.

>> it's also been difficult for the people relying on this sanctuary for shelter. it serves as a place for people to retreat during the day. but for the past two months, repairs have put them out. >> we're so close to sort of beating out the rain, but unfortunately the rain got to us before we were able to finish the job. >> there are still some more weeks of construction ahead, but they say there's been a silver lining. >> it's kind of been a beautiful opportunity. there are a lot of folks from the neighborhood who, during service, come and hang out in our garden when we would otherwise be inside. >> you know, you have to you have to make a win out of every tragedy and the church getting burned was was really scary for us and the community as a whole. but the ability to sort of clean up the space and make it make it more hospitable has been a big effort. >> the community coming through with donations, helping to make this makeshift shelter possible. >> while the insurance would pay for the fire damage, it doesn't

pay for the other things that we had to do to compensate for being able to, like, put up a shelter for people to get out of the rain. >> their sights now set on getting back into this sanctuary for christmas. >> the sanctuary feels like our church home, and so being able to be back in there and cozy and warm on christmas eve, i think will feel particularly special this year. >> tara campbell, abc seven news. >> in the accuweather forecast, we're looking at live doppler seven as we loop it over the last hour. and you can see showers moving in from the south because the bulk of this moisture is actually hitting the central coast this morning. and that's where we'll find the heaviest rain well south of the bay area. but this morning you can still see light to moderate showers. have this line of downpours that's starting to work its way into the city over the next 30 minutes, some downpours developing around fremont this morning. and that's what we're going to see throughout the morning. lighter showers with some

scattered downpours embedded with it. so winds right now they're out of the south. not as strong as they were last week. winds generally about 5 to 15mph right now. so it is a level one today. scattered showers, some isolated downpours. we don't have any risk of smaller stream or creek flooding. we may have some standing water on our roads, but just be careful of that. the highest rainfall will be in the south bay because the storm is coming in from the south and winds out of the southeast about 5 to 20mph. so around lunchtime, we're just tracking scattered light showers out there. we could see a brief break in a lot of the action here later on this evening. then tomorrow morning we're still going to be at a level one for scattered showers, but it looks like tomorrow afternoon we will start to dry out as the storm system pulls away. and that means wednesday is actually looking nice and sunny. here's the winter storm warning. it is in effect until 4 a.m. wednesday about 5500ft, 1 to 2ft of snow. below that, a few inches very likely winds will be

in your monday morning commute. so here's a live look. this is i-680 in sunol. it looks like the camera froze, but as you can see, the point is being made. it is wet out there. this morning, which i think you're used to at this point. you can continue to watch this this morning as drew updates your forecast for this level one storm on our storm impact scale in an interview you'll only see on seven. >> the man at the center ofe controversy around san mateo county sheriff christina corpus, is telling his side of the story. the sheriff's civilian chief of staff, victor angel, says the scathing report against the sheriff and her administration is built on lies, including their alleged romantic relationship. the report concluded angel had major influence over sheriff corpus and that he bought her expensive gifts, including $11,000 diamond earrings. he says that's not true, and says supporters of the old sheriff are telling lies to bring her down and stop the change that she's bringing to the department. >> let's talk about those 40

people that judge cordell interviewed. are you saying that most of those are supporters of the former sheriff bolanos? absolutely. i'm saying that. and a few of them are just scared for their job, because if you don't kiss the ring in this county, they will push you out. >> angel and corpus are facing calls to resign, and they both are refusing to step down. you can watch the full interview with angel over on our website, abc seven news.com. >> eight suspects, including children, have been arrested in connection to an organized retail crime spree. they're accused of targeting walgreens stores around san francisco. police say the group includes kids as young as 12. they're accused of stealing more than $84,000 in merchandise and at least 23 thefts starting in july. the investigation started after a violent robbery at the potrero avenue, walgreens. the suspects face charges ranging from assault and robbery to organized retail theft and grand theft. they are all bay area residents. >> raw milk sold in bay area

stores is being pulled from shelves this morning after testing positive for bird f. raw farm of fresno county is recalling a batch of cream top whole raw milk. it has a best by date of november 27th. the county of santa clara public health lab has been testing that milk for bird flu during the growing outbreak, and caught the bad batch. the state department of public health says no one, thankfully, has gotten sick from drinking the milk. health experts say pasteurized milk remains safe to drink, but it's best to avoid raw dairy. bird flu is also having an impact on grocery store bills. the cost of eggs went up more than 30% in october compared to last year. that's according to the consumer price index. and prices are expected to go even higher, especially as the holiday season brings more demand. the nationwide supply has been impacted since 2022. bird flu cases started to spike again last month, taking out 2.8 million egg laying birds across three states. that's a projected

showers around pacifica, south san francisco. some of these begin working into the city over the next 30 minutes. san leandro, san lorenzo seeing some heavier showers. a similar story asu work through sunol over the past. pleasanton seeing a downpour as well. here's the wider picture. live doppler seven along with satellite. the bulk of the rain is going to be to our south along the central coast. that's actually where the flood risk will lie over the next 24 hours. you look at the flood risk here locally and we don't have one. we're not tracking inches of rain like we saw for days last week. today, most of the rainfall is going to be between a quarter and a half of an inch of rain. where there is the flood risk is to our south around santa barbara points to the north, because that is where the heaviest rain is focused over the next 24 hours. so no flood watches are in effect here. we don't have any wind advisories. it is a level one storm for your monday 40s and 50s. as we get you going right now, do take the umbrella with you.

traffic this is south of 92, in hayward, near tennyson. and it's minor slowing now, but it doesn't get out of there quickly. you're going to see a pretty big backup on 880 through hayward. we'll check back in just a few. >> thank you. sue. in the north bay residents and businesses on the russian river are still cleaning up and drying off after last week's atmospheric river brought devastating flooding. the survey report surrey rather resort iny report guerneville is dealing with the aftermath of more than three feet of flood water, furnishings and appliances were floating in the water and there was even more water in the parking lot, the manager says. they lost 80% of the items in their bar. employees say they simply cannot believe the damage. >> it was very heartbreaking. i am still recovering in a little shock. this is my first experience with a flood in the area and well, it's a learning experience too. next time we will be more prepared and then

the travel rush that's just getting started. >> so far, there have been at least 40 flight delays in and out of sfo. this morning, but on the board behind me, i am seeing a lot of flights on time. aseing many as 80 million americans are expected to travel for the thanksgiving holiday by air and on the roads. american, delta and united say this will be their busiest season ever. united, even adding 400 flights per day to handle the demand. the faa opening special airspace used by the military off the east coast and gulf of mexico. tomorrow, some 50,000 flights are expected to take off and airport officials are warning travelers to expect long lines starting today. >> i thought it was like beating the crowds, but apparently i'm not. >> tsa is expecting a potentially record breaking holiday travel season. if recent experience is any guide, these will likely be some of the busiest travel days in u.s. history. >> the tsa says while passengers see wait times at security checkpoints at their lowest

morning, but a closer view will show you, for the most part, the rain is light with a few embedded downpours. you can see the brighter colors over the peninsula right now. some of those working into the east bay. so heading into concord, pittsburg, antioch, brentwood, you'll likely see a heavier shower over the next 30 minutes. and the biggest issue with this level one storm is going to be some standing water on our roadways. we don't have that flood risk like we had last week. we're not anticipating any widespread flooding, but slower travel times over the next couple of hours. level one today for scattered showers and isolated downpours. winds are not an issue like they were last week. winds are pretty light less than 20mph. so here's future weather. throughout the morning, we'll track those scattered showers as the system rolls by to our south. we could likely see a break in the action late tonight. here's 9 p.m. on our monday evening, and then tomorrow morning we'll see one final round of some light showers, and then we begin to dry out tuesday afternoon. and that leads to a spectacular wednesday and

a tractor to help that tired, weakened horse out of the mud. >> we were able to successfully use the tractor to gently lift that horse and allow it to get on its four legs, which it did pretty quickly, and then again, give it some time to recover. and ultimately the rescue operation was successful. >> the horse was able to walk away on its own after that rescue. >> an unusual rescue in san francisco. animal care and control officers are now caring for a barn owl that was stuck in a flower pot. this was at a home in laurel heights on saturday. officers say the owl was soaked and lethargic when they arrived, and this morning it's now recovering in a shelter. barn owls are typically uncommon in san francisco, but is the official bird of the city of berkeley. >> fun fact i'll know that for trivia next time. happening today. what could be a critical hearing in the menendez brothers bid for freedom? eric and lylers menendez are set to appear in court virtually for a hearing,

where a judge could decide whether new evidence warrants a reexamination of their convictions. that evidence is related to the brothers claims they were sexually abused by their father before they murdered their parents in 1989. today's hearing is in response to a petition filed by their lawyers last year, december 11th. a judge is set to consider the request from l.a. county's outgoing da to resentence the brothers. however, that hearing is likely to be delayed, so the new da has more time to review the case. >> all right, cher has been a part of american culture for six decades, but it turns out there's still plenty. we don't actually know about her. this is kind of crazy. like many celebrities, she does not go by the name she was given at birth. according to her new memoir, cher didn't even know her birth name for years. she thought cher was short for sherilyn. however, when she decided to change her legal name to share in 1979, when she was 33 at the time, she

we're tracking more rain. >> live outside here is san jose mineta international, where we do have some light showers falling at this hour. current temperature 54 degrees with elevated humidity. now, let's talk about the flood risk today. you can see here locally we don't have a risk of any flooding. the showers today are very light in nature. but where there is the risk of flooding is to our south in this area in green, both today and tomorrow is going to take the hardest hit. when it comes to heavy rain over the next 48 hours. here's live doppler seven. that's not to say we don't have action on live doppler seven, but it's not the intense rainfall we had for much of last week. but we do have some downpours. one now moving through the city. so working through the marina right now, the presidio, the financial district, even the mission seeing a brief downpour this morning, standing water on our roads would be the biggest issue.t is slow. go on highway four, making your way through brentwood, antioch, pittsburgh on your way into concord because of this downpour that is moving off to the north. so again,
