the system is heading east. in fact, philadelphia, up through new york city and boston all bracing. ginger zee timing it all out in a moment, but first, gio benitez leading us off, he's at newark airport tonight. >> reporter: on what's expected to be the busiest day for planes in the air, tonight, the faa issuing a ground delay at new jersey's newark liberty airport, slowing air traffic due to a shortage of air traffic controllers. the lack of staffing leading to growing delays at the height of the thanksgiving travel period. >> we are now leaders in terms of being able to handle more efficiently higher numbers of airplanes coming in and out of our region's airport. >> reporter: united airlines with a strong message to the faa, blaming them for disrupting more than 343,000 travelers with delays, cancellations, and long wait times this month alone. demanding that they rebuild staffing levels so travelers can depend on safe, efficient air travel. >> very stressed out about delays, about waiting in lines.

i don't like waiting in lines, so we need to get here early. >> reporter: it comes as tens of thousands of flights are full of passengers hoping to get out before a major coast-to-coast storm threatens to upend their holiday plans. this is one of the more than 50,000 flights taking off today in america. just about every plane today and tomorrow is packed. a slight ground delay in boston too as heavy rains rolled through the northeast. monday, a tug vehicle pulling an empty jetblue plane struck a cape air jet, two pilots taken to the hospital. in los angeles, an alaska airlines jet speeding down the runway aborting takeoff after hearing a loud bang. >> yeah, so, we're seeing little whiffs of smoke on your inner right wheel. no signs of fire, just an occasional whiff. >> reporter: the jet bound for washington hitting a bird. the plane returned to the gate for further inspection. and tonight, drivers from new york to philly to chicago hitting the road, facing long

lines, as aaa predicts more than 71 million will travel by car over the thanksgiving holiday. and david, despite these issues, it's been pretty much smooth sailing for most travellers in america. let's hope it stays that way as this storm marches east. david? >> david: fingers crossed for everyone out there. gio benitez leading us off tonight. gio, thank you. let's get right to chief meteorologist ginger zee, tracking it all. ginger, of course, that forecast in the northeast for thanksgiving day itself, and the big parade, lots of questions, so, take us through it all tonight. >> reporter: yeah, we desperately need that rain, but we're going to have to work on our gratitude and be grateful for it because it's looking like a super soaker by thanksgiving morning in the northeast. i'll get to that. but let's focus on what's happening with the storm now. that channel of moisture just south of big sur, california, into the sierra nevada, where they've already had a couple of feet of snow, could get up to another foot above 7,000 feet. winds are gusting to 50. they're saying, don't drive if you don't have to. and speaking of not driving if you don't have to, avalanche alerts all up and down the mountains in colorado.

so, if you're traveling i-70 tomorrow, that's one of the worst spots in the rocky mountains for travel on the roads. most of the nation's looking pretty good. early on wednesday, but then by wednesday evening, things change, especially if you drive i-55, 65, or 75. right along i-70, in illinois, indiana, ohio, that's rain. and then you go over and this is where it wraps up, and becomes pretty heavy rain, especially early thursday. so, a lot of folks as they're cooking or trying to make their way to grandma's house, philadelphia, new york city, boston, it's staying rain, but then it's a mix, and then heavy snow, up into the green and white mountains, parts of the poconos, berkshires, into the catskills. it will wrap up and move out, and then next week, we'll be talking about the coldest air of the season, much below average all the way south to north florida. >> david: and a quick followup, ginger, the parade itself, rainy, but the wind shouldn't be a problem for the floats? >> reporter: the wind for the balloons themselves will be below their threshold, so, it should be good. but everyone's going to have to have the rain gear on.

>> david: ginger zee, say happy thanksgiving to the family for me. ginger, thank you. we have a lot of other news to get to tonight, including the breaking headline involving israel and hezbollah. president biden announcing a ceasefire that starts in just hours, saying peace is possible in the region. but with fighting still raging with hamas. martha raddatz with late reporting tonight. >> reporter: tonight, just hours before the ceasefire takes effect, buildings smoldering after massive israeli air strikes rained down in and around beirut, panic gripping residents trying to flee, residents trying to flee, buildings flattened. one last major volley into hezbollah strongholds before president biden announcing a ceasefire between israel and hezbollah. >> under the deal reached today, effective at 4:00 a.m. tomorrow local time, the fighting across the lebanese-israeli border will end, will end.

>> reporter: biden saying the ceasefire is designed to be permanent, but this does not stop the fighting between israel and hamas in gaza. the israeli cabinet approving the hezbollah plan, brokered by the u.s. and france, for a 60-day pause, during which hezbollah would move north from the border with israel, and israeli forces gradually withdrawing from southern lebanon. hezbollah has yet to publicly make any announcement, saying, “that will come after a meeting tomorrow." and israel is reserving the right to strike at hezbollah if it feels threatened. what israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu called "complete military freedom of action," raising big questions about the viability of the plan, vowing, "if hezbollah breaks the agreement and tries to rearm, we will attack." >> oh, my god. >> reporter: meaning strikes like today, in the very center of the capital, may well resume.

rattled markets worldwide, president-elect donald trump declared that on day one of his new administration, he will impose the most sweeping tariffs in recent history, targeting america's nearest neighbors and biggest trading partners. "i will sign all necessary documents to charge mexico and canada a 25% tariff on all products coming into the united states, and its ridiculous open borders," trump posted on social media. "this tariff will remain in effect until such time as drugs, in particular fentanyl, and all illegal aliens stop this invasion of our country." it's the fulfillment of a campaign pledge. >> and i'm putting tariffs on mexico. every damn thing that they sell into the united states has got to have like a 25% tariff until they stop drugs from coming in. >> reporter: the united states does more than $1 trillion in trade with canada and mexico every year. from consumer electronics to cars and trucks to fresh fruit and vegetables. trump's new tariffs would not be paid by canada and mexico, but

by u.s. companies and stores, who will pass on much of the cost to consumers by raising prices on their products. best buy and walmart already warning today new tariffs will mean higher price tags. reaction to trump's announcement was swift. mexico's president claudia sheinbaum threatening to impose retaliatory tariffs on american goods. saying the border crisis cannot be solved "with threats and tariffs," warning that if the u.s. imposes tariffs, quote, it is not acceptable, and would cause inflation and job losses in the u.s. and mexico. canada's prime minister justin trudeau took a softer line, saying he spoke to trump. >> this is a relationship that we know takes a certain amount of working on, and that's what we'll do. >> reporter: trump is using these tariffs to pressure canada and mexico to help him deliver on his key campaign promise -- securing the border. today in texas, trump's incoming border czar tom homan was laying the groundwork for mass deportations.

>> let me be clear, there is going to be a mass deportation because we just finished a mass illegal immigration crisis on the border. >> reporter: and homan warned local officials and ordinary citizens not to stand in the way. >> we're a nation of laws, and we're going to enforce those laws. and i'm sending a message to the people who said they're going to get in our way, they're going to stop us from doing what we're doing, i've said it 100 times in the last week, don't cross that line. >> reporter: trump also declared in a separate social media post that he will slap a 10% tariff on all imports from china until beijing stops the flow of illegal fentanyl into the u.s. and, again, though trump says china will pay those tariffs directly to the u.s. treasury, that's not how it works. u.s. importers and companies pay those tariffs, and they pass the costs on mostly to consumers through higher prices. david? >> david: we'll be watching this in the months ahead. terry moran live in washington. terry, thanks. in new york city tonight, a new stabbing incident, and it comes amid a series of random attacks, just as millions of

visitors are set to visit new york for the thanksgiving day parade. tonight, law enforcement is on high alert. here's aaron katersky. >> reporter: tonight, with millions in new york city for the annual thanksgiving day parade, violent assaults on the subway in the last 24 hours have authorities on guard. at 9:00 this morning, a would-be thief approached a rider on the m-train at the bryant park station in midtown manhattan and demanded his phone. when the rider refused, police say, the suspect punched him. the rider then pulled a knife and stabbed the would-be thief in the arm. on monday, a 15-year-old boy was stabbed as he rode the m-train in queens. he's now stable, and there have been no arrests. and video from a different train earlier that day capturing this altercation. >> he's being aggressive that apparently i sat too close to him. i told him, dude, just chill out, like, just chill, it's 8:30 in the morning. and he just escalated, escalated. >> reporter: that man was not seriously injured, but the suspect was arrested and charged with assault. >> everybody that gets on the subway in the morning knows they're going down into a dangerous place.
