>> but we begin with a coast-to-coast storm on the move this morning. we have team coverage of the holiday weather and travel get away, starting of course with ginger. >> good morning. more than a foot of snow has already fallen in colorado, at least parts of it. this is from steamboat springs and that's just the start. there's more where that came from. throughout the day, colorado takes the brunt of the difficult travel. i-70, you've got avalanche watches and warnings throughout parts of the rockies. i-25 down into new mexico you could run into issues. missouri, illinois, and indiana to get some rain, then it intensifies a bit. if you're traveling i-65 tonight through indianapolis or over to i-75, rain, as well. then it gets ugly because it'll pump up with a lot of moisture anywhere from boston and rhode island up to connecticut, philadelphia, washington, d.c. inland, it's meant to be snow.

in between you get that makes that could impact travel, 80 or 90, going 94. as it wraps up it'll dry out that the day. we will see drying into the afternoon hours and then the cold air comes in and turned on the lake effect, snow machine through the weekend. feet of snow. watertown, through lake erie and back to traverse city, michigan, michael. >> ginger, thank you for that. now we go to the roads. this is expected to be among the busiest days in the holiday week. faith abubey is in atlanta. good morning, faith. >> good morning to you, michael. we are along one of the busiest stretches here in metro atlanta. the downtown connector. traffic is steadily picking up this morning. this is a mix of holiday travelers and commuters this morning. according to aaa these drivers are sharing the road today and across the thanksgiving period with more than 71 million others across the country. it could set a record. that's a lot of traffic, especially in metro areas like this one. you can avoid some of that if you're leaving this morning after "gma" and before 10:00 a.m.

worst traffic today will be this afternoon from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. the experts say waiting until thursday on thanksgiving will be better. they are expecting minimal traffic then. so what is fueling the number of people, the rise in people trying to drive to their thanksgiving destination? it could be the lower gas prices. if you live in the states in blue on the map you're seeing here, the gas prices are below $3. aaa also says, for the first time in about three years, they expect the national average of gas prices to drop below $3 a gallon, as well, which is great news, but make sure you have a designated driver if you plan to drink at any of these festivities. but, if you're in a pinch, aaa will give you a ride and tow your vehicle for free if you live in certain states, like here in georgia, between tonight and monday morning back to you, george. >> now to air travel, let's take a look at the planes in the air right now. one major airline is blasting the faa over the air traffic control shortage that could hurt people's travel plans.

trevor ault has the report. good morning, trevor. >> hey, george. good morning from the united maintenance hangar here in newark. this is an a320 neo, essentially a brand-new plane that's going to be taking off later for boston, and newark is a key hub for united. they said today is going to the biggest day of the year here, and the travel rush has not been without its hiccups. the airline is now calling out the faa. overnight the thanksgiving holiday travel rush disrupted in the northeast with air traffic controller shortages causing hundreds of delays. united airlines now slamming the faa for those staffing shortages, citing delays at newark airport, one of its hubs, saying that since the start of november more than 343,000 united travelers have been disrupted by delays, cancellations, long taxi times, and longer flight times related to air traffic control delays. it comes as the tsa expects to screen 2.9 million passengers today alone. >> get up early.

it's amazing how much better the airport is now than it was last night. >> definitely very crowded. a lot going on. >> in a scary moment on this alaska airlines flight departing los angeles for everett, washington. the crew forced to abort take off after that plane struck a bird. and we are learning new details about this harrowing incident on a united flight earlier this month. this unruly passenger seen repeatedly kicking one of the seats. gino stepped in to intervene. >> as i restrained him, we zip tied his hands and feet and seat belted him to the seat. >> authorities say that man was possibly under the influence and suffering from a medical episode. united has since banned him from all other flights. now the faa has responded to united saying the majority of delays are caused by weather or airline operations, but they note that staffing shortages are

a decade-long problem and that hiring more air traffic controllers is a top priority, george. >> trevor, what is the tsa saying about taking thanksgiving food on planes? >> interestingly enough, they essentially say you can bring the vast majority of your thanksgiving feast on the plane if you wanted to. turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing. if you've got a place to store them, they are welcome. you could even in theory bring gravy and robin's favorite cranberry sauce, too, but those would be limited to 3.4 ounces i think we can agree that's not enough for thanksgiving. >> definitely not. [laughs] trevor, thanks very much. we will switch gears and take a look at the series of slashings in manhattan. it comes as security preparations begin for the holiday. stephanie ramos has the story. >> george, good morning. we begin with a troubling attempted robbery on the subway tuesday morning. the victim is the suspected thief who was trying to take a subway rider's cell phone. the attack happened at around

9:00 a.m. when the 28-year-old slashing victim approached the rider and attempted to take his phone. he was slashed in the arm. the slashed man was taken to the hospital and police are interviewing him. the rider who held onto his phone continued on the train. this is the latest in a series of concerning incidents. you might member the italian tourist attacked recently. along with a 55-year-old tourist from denmark. just a few weeks ago three people tragically lost their lives in a random stabbing spree. while these incidents are unsettling, it is important to note that overall crime in the city is down. this being a holiday week, security preparations of course are underway for the thanksgiving day parade. law enforcement agencies including the fbi and nypd have outlined potential risks to the event, including threats from lone offenders or small groups. although there is no specific threat at this time, there are concerns about vehicle ramming, a tactic that's been used in crowded areas. in response, the nypd will

deploy sanitation trucks and blocker vehicles along the parade route to protect those trying to enjoy the holiday. robin? >> going to take all precautions there. stephanie, thank you. now, the major development in the middle east. the cease-fire between israel and hezbollah took effect overnight. we want you to take a look at new video coming in of people returning to their homes in southern lebanon. our chief global affairs correspondent martha raddatz is tracking the latest for us. good morning, martha. >> good morning, robin. those cars returning home a welcome sign. in fact, across lebanon and israel's northern border this morning the fighting is paused. just hours ago, that u.s.-brokered cease-fire taking effect with hopes it will be permanent. the deal was struck after a day of withering israeli air strikes in and around beirut, flattening this apartment building, causing panic in residential streets. but, hours later, president biden confirming that,

after weeks of intensive negotiations, a deal had been struck between israel and hezbollah to end the fighting. >> this is designed to be a permanent cessation of hostilities. what is left of hezbollah and other terrorist organizations will not be allowed. >> under the agreement, hezbollah and israel will observe a 60-day truce. during that period, hezbollah fighters will move north away from israel's border, and israeli troops will gradually withdraw from lebanon. in the last few months, the exchange of fire has left more than 3,000 dead in lebanon and at least 70 israelis killed. in addition to relentless aerial and ground assaults, hezbollah leader hassan nasrallah was assassinated and exploding pagers took out hundreds of its fighters. but the return fire from hezbollah left some 80,000 israelis in the north displaced,

leaving benjamin netanyahu under extreme pressure to make it safe for them to return. in a late night address, netanyahu thanking president biden for brokering the cease-fire and yet vowing to strike lebanon again if hezbollah breaks it's part of the deal. secretary of state antony blinken says the cease-fire in lebanon could help end the conflict in gaza since hamas will no longer have hezbollah's war to distract the israeli forces. michael? >> we sure hope that's the case. martha, thank you so much for that. we turn now to the latest on trump's team. selina wang is at mar-a-lago. >> good morning to you, michael. donald trump is doubling down on his plans for mass deportations. we are learning this morning that his advisors are discussing a plan to strip federal resources from democratic-run cities if they refuse to work with the administration on deporting undocumented immigrants.

that is according to "the washington post." we know this idea had been previously discussed by the trump team and some of his allies, including vivek ramaswamy, are publicly talking about this idea, saying that not a cent of federal spending should go to century spending should go to sanctuary cities. and a mayor of one of those cities, denver's mike johnston, says he's willing to go to jail to stop mass deportation efforts. tom homan, trump's border czar, says he's willing to throw mike johnston into jail. johnston says he supports efforts to deport criminals but not other members of the community. michael? >> selina, overnight, the president-elect made controversial picks for the critical public health agency >> yeah, that's right. overnight donald trump said that he is choosing stanford university's dr. jay bhattacharya. to run the national institutes of health. bhattacharya is a vocal critic

of the very agency that he's been tapped to run, becoming famous for harshly criticizing pandemic lockdowns and the federal government response to covid-19. bhattacharya also holds views outside the medical mainstream, embraced by trump and some of his allies, including rfk jr. he is donald trump's choice to run the department of health and human services. rfk jr. has no medical training, no government experience, he's also endorsed a host of conspiracy theories that have been debunked, michael. >> selina wang, thank you for your reporting. george? >> michael, thanks. we turn now to the reaction to president trump's threats for tariffs on mexico and canada on day one of his administration. the countries are pushing back. mexico's president is warning that her country could retaliate against the u.s. with tariffs of its own. rebecca jarvis is here with the story. >> nice to see you guys. he's threatening mexico and canada with those tariffs unless they crack down on the flow of migrants and drugs. they are pushing back but it is

american consumers who could end up paying biggest price. this morning president-elect trump's threat to impose tariffs on america's neighbors already prompting a growing fight with mexico and canada. mexico's new president threatening to retaliate with tariffs of their own if trump follows through on his threat to impose 25% across-the-board tariffs on both countries, potentially sparking a devastating trade war. mexico's president says tariffs are not acceptable, and it would cause inflation and job losses in the u.s. and mexico, adding later, "mexico respects trump but we also ask respect for ourselves." to the north in canada, an emergency session of parliament where prime minister justin trudeau, who's had a rocky relationship with trump, is trying to calm nerves, speaking to trump within hours of him posting his threat monday night. >> what we will do is stand up for canadian jobs, as we have before, as it will continue to stand up for the prosperity we

create when we work together. >> but analysts believe the damage wouldn't be limited to overseas. several major companies have already made clear american consumers would pay much of the cost of any tariffs. with inflation still pulling, with inflation still cooling, americans could be hit with higher prices for electronics, cars, hardware, groceries, and even gasoline. best buy's ceo, for example, telling investors during an earnings call tuesday that the vast majority of the tariffs will probably be passed on to the consumer as a price increase. trump has long favored tariffs to achieve his goals, this time accusing america's two largest trading partners of letting drugs and migrants cross the border, promising pain if something doesn't change. the question now is how much of that tough talk actually becomes action, when you look at

president-elect trump's economic cabinet, many of them are seen by wall street as more moderate on tariffs. the perception is, george, that this is a negotiating tactic at this point. >> that is one of the reason the stock market keeps rising. >> yeah, absolutely. taking all of this in stride at this point. wall street was up 20% going into the election. the s&p 500 now up 27% for the year, and that is reflected in most 401(k)s and retirement accounts. i can tell you, while you're hearing from a lot of world leaders on this topic, behind the scenes it is the ceos talking to the president-elect about what this would do to their business and consumer. >> thanks very much. robin? >> thank you both. we turn now to black friday. the deals are dropping and many are busy buying. becky worley has holiday shopping numbers for the season so far. and where we can find the biggest discounts are now. >> you got it. the headline here is that consumer spending is up. adobe giving us an early look at data for the first 24 days of the holiday season, covering more than a trillion visits to retail websites, and they say consumers have spent $77 billion online.

that's up 9.6% from 2023 and above adobe's previous forecast. that's good for the economy. but those who have waited to buy may be rewarded, saying discounts for electronics average 10% or so off the listed price in the 21 days leading up to today. but over the next few days the average discount is expected to climb thanksgiving through cyber monday, peaking at about 30% off, and the company predicting the best bargains for computers will come on saturday. that's a little bit new this year. meanwhile, if you're looking for deals on clothes, cyber monday said to have the best discounts, averaging about 23% off. my super bowl is starting. let's go. traffic controller delays. the faa says the majority of delays are because of weather and airline operations, but they do say hiring more air traffic controllers is a top priority. regardless, for the millions of people who are traveling for thanksgiving, if you're flying it's a good idea to have a plan in case your flight is delayed. of course millions more are going to be driving for thanksgiving. 71 million people, according to aaa, that could be the highest ever for thanksgiving, and the worst of the traffic is expected this afternoon. 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. you could avoid some of it if you're able get on the road this morning or even better if you're able to hold off on driving until tomorrow morning, thanksgiving day. the good news, whether or not you're going to be in traffic, is that gas prices continue to trend down. aaa is predicting it's possible we might see the national average for a gallon of gas dip below $3 a gallon. it would be the first time the average is that low in three years, michael. >> that's some good news in all of that. pack your patience and get there early if you can.

>> yeah, but there are so many deals dropping, so much savings dropping. how do you know if you should hold out for a better deal or do it now? >> well, here's my philosophy. basically, you can feel confident buying now if it is a small dollar item. maybe 15-30% or more. if it's in that range of discounts, yes, buy it. let me give you a couple of examples. first, at jcpenney they have bath towels on sale for it is $2.99. that is 70% off. you can stock up there to save. toys are on sale at target. a bunch of things including a big action figure dinosaur, 50% off. it is $29.99, the lowest price it's been all year. but i will tell you something i would wait on, and that is big-ticket tech purchases. we do see those discounted the most thursday, friday, and then cyber monday, and maybe like an xbox is a good example. they might not drop the price but they might throw in a gift card for the store to sweeten the deal. >> i need to buy a new tv. when is best? >> tvs are either going to be
