on abc seven news at 11. >> always live abc seven news starts right now. >> a growing memorial in the east bay tonight as a deadly crash leads to a somber thanksgiving. three young people are dead. one other is in the hospital after their tesla cybertruck slammed into a wall and caught fire. good evening. i'm ama daetz and i'm dan ashley. >> thanks for joining us. a family friend tells us the victims are all college students home for the thanksgiving break. and on a night where so many young people are going out, obviously reconnecting with friends. piedmont is planning tributes for four families whose thanksgiving will never be the same. >> abc seven news reporter tim johns has more. >> reporter dan, the mayor of piedmont, sending out a statement earlier this evening, sending her condolences to the families of the victims. she also encouraged those here in the local community to come out to the city's annual turkey trot event tomorrow morning in order to support one another. the mayor saying the route for that turkey trot event will actually be altered this year to come by

the crash site, in order for those participating to be able to lay flowers at a memorial service, a vehicle on fire. >> we have reports of people trapped inside the vehicle were unable to get into it. it's completely engulfed. >> new audio reveals some of the horrifying moments following the crash that killed three. police say the car was a tesla cybertruck that jumped the curb, struck a cement wall and then got wedged between the wall and a tree before bursting into flames after the collision. a second car pulled up at the scene, and the driver was able to pull one person out of the burning vehicle. that victim, who remains critically injured, is sedated in a local hospital, suffering from burn wounds and recovering from surgery. a mother close to the families of the victims tells abc seven news. all four people graduated from piedmont high school in 2023 and were currently sophmores in college. as word of the deadly crash spread throughout the day, dozens of people stopped by the site of the incident to light candles, lay flowers and pray. one woman, who says she was the middle school teacher of the victims, told us the news has devastated

the small and close knit piedmont community. >> they're smart kids. they're good kids. they were all so. kids that were really supportive of all their friends. >> the piedmont unified superintendent sent a letter to families today saying, quote, the loss of young lives is a profound tragedy made even more difficult during the holiday season. let us come together as a community to support one another, hold space for grief and extend care for those impacted by this devastating loss. the piedmont police chief says speed was likely a factor in this crash. he also says his department will be investigating as to whether drugs or alcohol were also a factor. i'm in piedmont. tim johns, abc seven news. >> happening now a busy day of thanksgiving. travel winding down. looking live out at roads across the bay area tonight, we have seen some of the heaviest traffic in the east bay. now, if you're putting off your trip until the morning. triple a says you may be in luck. that is

but instead pulled out about 45 minutes ago. the controversy is over claims made in lawsuits that one of the san jose state players is transgender. the university and the player have never said so. boise state forfeited two matches earlier this season. >> new developments tonight with three americans released by china as part of a prisoner swap. they're back on american soil just in time for thanksgiving. their plane landed tonight at a base in san antonio. mark sweden and chi li and john loooooong are all back home. li and sweden were wrongfully detained, according to the u.s. state department. lee's son, harrison, is a student at stanford, and he went before congress earlier this year to plead for help in getting his father released. >> i've now spent a third of my life missing my dad. good afternoon. >> negotiations between china and the united states had been going on for months, including a private meeting between president biden and chinese president xi jinping. in exchange, the united states released three chinese prisoners

being held in the u.s. meta ceo mark zuckerberg met today with president elect donald trump. the two dined at trump's mar-a-lago estate. meta confirmed the meeting, saying zuckerberg was grateful for the invitation to meet with trump and members of his team about the incoming administration. trump has often attacked the facebook founder on the campaign trail and was kicked off facebook following the january 6th attack on the capitol. the company brought back his account last year. >> new at 11 an update on bird flu concerns that are sparking a dairy debate. the state department of public health is issuing a second warning now to californians not to consume raw milk produced and packaged by raw farm. the fresno county company issued a voluntary recall of its raw milk after a second batch tested positive for bird flu. the affected milk products have a best by date of december 7th on the back. packaging. state health leaders say pasteurized milk is safe. >> here at abc seven news, we are committed to tracking the bay area's changing approach to the homeless crisis. tonight, a

city in the north bay has won a legal battle over its plans to crack down on camping. a federal judge is upholding an ordinance that bans rv parking in the city of sebastopol during daylight hours. a coalition of civil rights groups sued over it two years ago, claiming it violates the constitutional rights of people living out of their campers. a supreme court decision over the summer gives cities more flexibility in managing homelessness. since then, san francisco has instituted new rv parking restrictions. both san jose and fremont also moved forward recently, with plans for rv limits. >> we're following the story tonight of a crime in the south bay that's really just plain awful. thieves broke into a family's car and stole the wheelchair that one young man relies to on get around. >> it's his legs, basically. >> so it's basically like making them stuck. he can't go anywhere. >> we first told you about this really outrageous story last night on abc7 news here at 11. >> and tonight we have an update that turns this negative situation around. abc seven news

reporter lauren martinez has the building a better bay area breakthrough? >> reporter a moment like this reminds us of the true meaning of the season of giving. >> hi, rachel. hi. >> just a day after miguel silva's wheelchair was stolen, volunteers showed up to his san jose door to gift him a brand new one. glenn perry and jeff bering are with the wheelchair foundation, based in danville. >> my emotions are who is this jerk that took away his gift of life, his gift of mobility, and we wanted to make sure that he was in a wheelchair before thanksgiving. thank you. >> they saw our story tuesday night. miguel's mom, rachel, woke up that day to find her son miguel's custom manual wheelchair had been stolen out of her suv. 24 year old miguel has cerebral palsy. >> so i was sad, almost to the point of tears. then i got mad. and when i got mad, i said, we need to do something about this. >> thank you. i appreciate you guys. two hugs. >> is that okay to open? was thankful and surprised.

>> it's a community. the community, everyone around. i don't know why i'm crying again. i'm sorry. >> unlike miguel's power chair, the manual wheelchair is easier to transport. >> it's just something as simple as taking them to the grocery store with me. he can come with me now. he doesn't have to sit in the car or anything like that. >> since teopan has put the word out on social media to keep an eye out for her son's custom wheelchair, she's been inundated with strangers and community members offering to help. the wheelchair foundation has donated manual wheelchairs to people in need in more than 150 countries. they're happy to do so in their own backyard as well. >> when glenn and i first drove up and, you know, we saw her vacuuming broken glass out of her car, we go, well, we know we know who that is. so we were very fortunate to be able to help you live for your kids. >> you live for them to be able to be somewhere, to be able to do things, to be able to. it's all for them. and just the fact that he was able to get

how busy this day was for the new store. the long line of shoppers anxious to get in were there well before the doors opened early this morning. >> so excited. i mean, we have been waiting for this for such a long time because all the time we had to drive on both sides, you know, ten miles each side and wow, what a relief. you know, this is this is a blessing to us and costco. i love costco. >> get those samples. the store was offering a discount on alcohol, which drew a line of its own. costco will be closed for the holiday tomorrow and reopen friday morning. >> those samples are pretty good. >> they are? >> well, the san francisco ballet nutcracker might not happen because of a possible strike. it's supposed to open on december 6th. that's the same day the contract with its dancers and stage managers expires. the american guild of musical artists posted a statement yesterday afternoon saying while negotiations have made some progress, several issues, including wages and working conditions, have not been addressed. the san francisco ballet responded tonight, saying in part, quote,

we are looking forward to reaching a fair and equitable contract with them through intentional negotiations, a process structured to better and more expeditiously create mutually beneficial solutions with the respective parties. a south bay nonprofit is doing its part to make sure that no one goes hungry this thanksgiving. martha's kitchen hosted a thanksgiving eve dinner tonight. it's one of many meals hosted at the community dining room throughout the year. in addition to feeding people throughout santa clara county. martha's kitchen also provides food to more than 60 organizations each month, and organizations in san francisco are prepared to make sure that every thanksgiving table is full by turkey time. >> yes, groups like the salvation army and glide are holding events to feed the hungry. abc seven news reporter tara campbell looks at what it takes to make the meals happen. >> game faces are on and thanksgiving meal preps are underway. the san francisco salvation army, hosting its annual turkey carving competition, a showdown between

the police and fire departments. >> there's three judging competitions of flair, speed and then also presentation. how it looks. >> timothy tucker is the director of the salvation army culinary training academy, giving students another chance. >> many are in recovery from drugs and alcohol, and our focus is a ten week training program that meets 9 to 2 monday through friday, with the goal of helping them find fantastic work. >> and on this day, the goal is to carve enough turkey to prepare 500 meals. >> what i love about it is this is a this is bringing the police department, the fire department all about focusing on our community. so we're going to take these 500 meals, deliver them to the community afterwards. >> and while they battle it out at the salvation army over at glide, more meal preparations. >> my favorite part is seeing putting a smile on all the people's faces and make sure they have a warm, beautiful and happy meal. >> 200 volunteers putting together 2000 meals. >> it's really fun that we get
