you pick the right day to do it because we expect it will be pretty light on the roads. chp is maximum enforcement period is underway. that means throughout the weekend, officers across the state will be cracking down on impaired driving and speeding. last year's maximum enforcement period resulted in more than a thousand arrests for dui. there were 27 fatal crashes. this year's enforcement period lasts until midnight sunday. this morning, community members in piedmont are coming together to remember three people killed in a car crash. we first brought you news of that crash yesterday on abc seven mornings. because of this crash, this year's turkey trot is going to take on new meaning. abc seven news reporter gloria rodriguez is live in piedmont. once again, where the route for the turkey trot is going to be changed to honor these very young victims. gloria. >> yeah, yeah. you know, reggie, this is really impacting this small community. it really has hit them hard. and the route for the turkey trot is being rerouted so that people who are participating can lay flowers at a memorial. and here's what we

know about that horrible crash. police say a tesla cybertruck jumped the curb, struck a cement wall and then got wedged between the wall and a tree before bursting into flames around 3:00 wednesday morning. after the collision, a second car pulled up to the scene and the driver was able to pull one person out of the burning car. that victim was critically injured and is in a hospital suffering from burn wounds. a mother close to the families of the victims tells abc seven news that all four people graduated from piedmont high school in 2023 and were currently sophomores in college. as word of the deadly crash spread throughout the day, dozens of people stopped by the site of the incident to light candles, lay flowers, and pray. one woman, who says she was a middle school teacher of the victims, told us that the news has devastated this small and close knit piedmont community. >> they were all so. kids that were really supportive of all their friends.

>> the piedmont police chief says speed was likely a factor in the crash, and they are still investigating, and the turkey trot starts at 830. this morning. live in piedmont gloria rodriguez abc seven news. >> gloria. thank you. san jose state's volleyball team is expected to release a statement today after yet another team forfeited a match against them. the latest drama comes during the mountain west conference tournament in vegas. the spartans are now in the final because boise state forfeited again. boise state defeated utah state earlier yesterday to advance to the semifinals, but instead of facing the spartans tomorrow, they decided to forfeit. this is the third time the broncos have refused to play sdsu. this whole controversy is over claims made in lawsuits accusing one of the san jose state players of being transgender. the player in question has been on the team since 2022, and there has never been any complaints about her until this year. the spartans say all their players meet ncaa standards. boise state released

a statement after the team's forfeit. it reads in part, our team fought for the win over utah state in the first round on wednesday. they should not have to forgo this opportunity while waiting for a more thoughtful and better system that serves all athletes. more pressure on san mateo county sheriff christina corpus to resign. the latest call coming from the county's deputy sheriffs association. in a letter released yesterday, they write, quote, we will no longer work with you. that ship has sailed all you are doing is playing the role of victim within a disaster of your own making. quit. a recently released report says the sheriff has abused her power while in office, had an inappropriate relationship with her chief of staff and sent out racist and homophobic text messages. sheriff corpus denies these allegations. she spoke directly with abc seven news i-team reporter dan noyes about all this. so did her chief of staff. you can see those exclusive interviews on our website, abc seven news.com slash i-team. this morning,

three americans are back in the u-s after being wrongfully detained in china. mark, sweden, kylie and john loooooong are all back home. li and sweden were all wrongfully detained, according to the u.s. state department. lee's son, harrison, is a student at stanford and has been trying to raise awareness about his father's incarceratio. abc news reporter perry russom has the details of that deal to get him back home. >> overnight, a holiday homecoming. >> you see people there running first time in freedom. >> an emotional reunion at joint base san antonio in texas after the release of three americans detained in china for years, among them chi li, a new york businessman who served eight years of a ten year sentence. after being wrongfully detained by the chinese charged with espionage. his son in september, speaking to congress. >> personally, i've now spent a third of my life missing my dad, john lee young, was arrested in

kitchen also provides food to more than 60 organizations every month, and we want to take a moment to recognize someone we are here at abc7 very grateful for our assignment manager, jim huntington, over this past weekend, he was inducted into the silver circle of the national academy of television, television arts and sciences, san francisco chapter, otherwise known as natas, to recognize his more than 25 years of work in the tv industry. he was introduced by the great abc seven news reporter lyanne melendez. she herself of course, a member of the silver circle, jim huntington, welcome to the silver circle, who wasn't ready for these hats. jim's career started back in 1977 at a radio station in bellingham, washington. look at these great pics. >> awesome, awesome pics. >> he worked there as a producer, a reporter, a managing editor at stations in bakersfield, and los angeles. since 2003, though, he's been

a transatlantic flight and flew to paris without a ticket. abc news reporter andrea fujii explains how that stowaway tried to hide on a packed flight. >> new questions about security this morning, after a major breach at one of the nation's busiest airports. >> this is the captain. we're just waiting for the police to come on board. >> a stowaway somehow sneaking onto a transatlantic flight from new york's jfk airport. and flying to paris without a ticket. the tsa says the

passenger was screened at the security checkpoint, but somehow managed to bypass all checks for a boarding pass or id before sneaking on to a sold out delta flight, where, according to witnesses, she tried to hide during the flight by moving between bathrooms. >> it directed us to keep everyone on the airplane until we sort out the extra passenger that's on the plane. >> the fbi aware of the incident? delta saying it's conducting an exhaustive investigation and will work collaboratively with other aviation stakeholders and law enforcement. meanwhile, another delta flight, this one from paris to atlanta, had to be diverted because of an unruly passenger. the faa reports more than 1800 cases of unruly passengers this year, including this incident on a recent flight from austin to los angeles. officials now saying the man in the video who had to be restrained by other passengers, was under the influence and was suffering from a medical episode. despite a few bumps in

haven't seen people coming by for the turkey trot, but they are starting to get things ready for it. live in piedmont, gloria rodriguez, abc seven news. >> gloria, thank you. an update on bird flu concerns that are sparking a dairy debate. the state department of public health is issuing a second warning now to californians to not consume raw milk produced and packaged by raw farm. the fresno county company issued a voluntary recall of its raw milk after a second batch tested positive for bird flu. the affected milk products have a best by date of december 7th on the packaging. state health leaders say pasteurized milk is safe. president elect trump has turned to the bay area for his choice to head the nation's leading medical research agency. abc seven news reporter zach fuentes takes a closer look at stanford doctor jay bhattachary. >> doctor jay bhattacharya is a professor of health policy at stanford university and now the nominee to be the next director of the national institutes of health. in a statement on social media, he said he was humbled by

home this morning. it's that time of the year again. spotify preparing to release its spotify wrapped report for users to share. so who made your top artist this year? amazon workers spending their thanksgiving on the picket line. the worldwide demonstration that's become an annual tradition, and you may have heard talk online about a major pay disparity among the cast of wicked. now, universal studios is clearing up the rumors. but first, here's spencer christian. >> okay, let's take a look at our weather for this thanksgiving day. we'll start with a cold morning. temperatures in the low 30s up in the north bay. low 30s in parts of the inland east bay as well. but as you get closer to the bay and the coast, temperatures in the low 40s this afternoon, it will be a nice, sunny and certainly milder thanksgiving afternoon than the morning. high temperatures up to about 60 in san francisco, low 60s around the bay shoreline. only upper 50s in the inland east bay, though, so it will be pleasant there, but not not exactly mild overnight. tonight it's going to be cold once again. not quite so cold as tonight was or as this morning
