6:02 pm
they were supposed to be. but hey, we'll take this as well. it's very festive, right? thanksgiving lunch had an asian flavor in san francisco's inner richmond instead of turkey. some 350 people ate korean barbecue at k elements barbecue on clement street. this is the seventh year that the restaurant has fed low income seniors and other people in need. plenty of volunteers were helping feed the crowd, including abc seven news anchor dion lim. >> san francisco's glide foundation brought holiday cheer to many people in need. today. the nonprofit served 3000 meals. it's a thanksgiving tradition, 60 years strong. we got people serving. >> we got young people here today from schools wanting to give back. >> glide creates this amazing aura of giving back. and that's what thanksgiving is all about giving back. >> former mayor willie brown was among the volunteers. guests enjoyed a traditional thanksgiving spread with ham, turkey, stuffing, vegetables, pie and much, much more. the work to prepare all that food is
6:03 pm
a labor of love, and so is the effort to bring it to the streets and some of san francisco's most vulnerable communities. abc seven news reporter tara campbell followed, along with glide today, and has that part of the story. you want the bag? >> sure. all right. >> one greeting at a time. this crew from glide giving out 250 thanksgiving meals to some of san francisco's hardest to reach all the way out to the most remote part of the city and find the folks that are unhoused right there and just touch them with a little bit of what glide touch is a community here with melanie castro, also known as sister angel streets, is a member of the sisters of perpetual indulgence, a group of queer and trans activists. >> come on up. >> heading up glide's harm reduction team. it's on the ground nearly every day, connecting people with services and supplies. >> it means the world to people like me. you know, i've been out here struggling with nothing for so long and, you know, to get by is kind of hard these days. and
6:04 pm
glide really comes through with a lot of resources. food, clothing, medical supplies means like family and community. >> it's just a nice reminder of, like, what it means to be human. >> just the meals today. >> i know they help out a lot, you know? and they're like, they don't ask you for anything. you know? it's a blessing to have them around. >> happy thanksgiving. what do you think you'd be doing without this meal today? i'll probably be hungry. >> yeah. >> and may i ask you your name, ma'am? my name is maggie. maggi. how long have you been out here? maggie? >> like six months. >> it's nice to show that glide is there for them and that we love people unconditionally. like, wherever they're at. >> but keeping track of where people are at is getting harder as the city ups its efforts to get people off the streets. >> take one more look around. makes it a challenge for us to find people in the same areas. but we're going to continue to go out every day because the
6:05 pm
need is there. and so we have to. it's up to us to go ahead and look for the folks. >> meanwhile, those with the least, perhaps with the most gratitude. it's amazing. >> it's great. you know, nothing else i could ask for. >> tara campbell, abc seven news. >> in san jose. loaves and fishes provide a shuttle service to take people to its free thanksgiving meal at saint francis cabrini parish. it prepared enough meals for 1000 people. and it doesn't just do it on thanksgiving. loaves and fishes provides free meals five days a week at piedmont elementary school and the goodwill on seventh street in san jose. >> you can come for a hot meal, no questions asked. we do not qualify anyone who wants to participate in that. that's serving. >> loaves and fishes feeds 1.8 million people each year. incredible thanksgiving is all about having second helpings and leftovers, but just how long can today's food actually sit out safely? according to the usda, the rule of thumb to keep in
6:06 pm
mind is the two hour rule. once food is cooked, it shouldn't be left at room temperature for more than two hours. that means within two hours of removing food from wherever it's been cooking, it will need to be refrigerated. if you're using appliances to keep food warmer or colder, like keeping something on a warming tray or a bed of rice or ice, that is, that time does not actually count towards the two hour rule. i hope there's no pop quiz. >> yeah, exactly. it's a lot to remember, but it's important. >> is it? >> is this thanksgiving marks an important first for one bay area mother and son? it's the first holiday that they're officially a family. abc seven news reporter zach fuentes has more on how an adoption changed the life of a ten year old boy. >> ten year old damian brock has been excited about this thanksgiving for a long time. >> i'm just looking forward to, like, go see my family members and everybody else, like, eat. >> that's because this thanksgiving is unlike any he or his family have shared before. it's the first since was adopted by his now mom, priscilla dixon. priscilla first
