short. a short, silent vigil on this friday night at piedmont park drew hundreds of people fellow students, classmates, community members. they came in droves. they linked arms they embraced early wednesday mornin, a tesla cybertruck crashed and erupted into flames on hampton road and king avenue in piedmont. three college students died, and one was critically hurt. authorities are still investigating the crash, but they believe the driver may have been going too fast. the deadly crash happened the day before thanksgiving. >> for this to happen the day before thanksgiving, i. it's just i nobody could imagine. >> this piedmont high school student didn't know the students personally, but he turned out to friday's vigil to show his support along with so many others. >> piedmont is a very close and tight knit community, and everyone knows each other. it's almost like a family. >> the fatal crash hits home for so many people in piedmont. the students killed graduated from piedmont high school as part of

the class of 2023. she was a freshman when the students were seniors at piedmont high. she knows the student who survived the crash. >> i actually knew him. he he is so sweet. always a delight to be around. >> this father has two kids. he also knows the students involved in the crash. he wanted to be there for the families hit hard by the tragedy. >> i hope that somehow me and my small way can provide some solace, and i hope that others can do the same for the families. >> friday night's vigil was brief but impactful, according to the people i talked to. no one really felt like talking about it on camera. a woman i spoke to says this fatal crash was heartbreaking. she says it's a parent's worst nightmare. a grandfather i talked to was moved to tears. he says his grandson was friends with the students killed. >> i was devastated. i felt terrible at the spot where the crash happened. >> a former classmate was at a

loss for words. >> there's a lot of things i wish i could tell them now. >> a community connected in sorrow. a community that will need time to heal in piedmont. suzanne phan abc seven news. >> a three alarm fire in vallejo forced people out of their homes. a century old multi storey victorian building. flames engulfed the building on sutter street at ohio street just before midnight. people were forced to wait outside in the cold as the building burned. >> we have to wait until everything is over with to be able to justify what was what happened. >> you know very much so worried. you know, i have nowhere to go from here. >> firefighters kept the flames from spreading to neighboring homes. nobody was hurt, but two people can't live there. right now, crews are investigating what caused the massive fire. a big loss today for one of the largest mushroom farms in the bay area. fire destroyed about half of a 1000 foot warehouse owned by monterey mushrooms in

morgan hill. firefighters had to pull apart a wall to reach the flames. they were able to save the other half of the building. there's no word yet on a cause. monterey mushrooms is the largest grower of mushrooms in north america. it claims to be known for popularizing the portabella mushroom. all right. we're going to shift gears for you and take a live look outside this friday night. don't let this pretty picture fool you. it's cold. in fact, sometimes when it's at its clearest is when it's at its coldest. >> that is true. you just can't see it right. there is a frost advisory for parts of the bay area. so let's get right to meteorologist sandhya patel. sandhya. yeah. >> karina and kristen, bundle up tonight because you will feel that chill if you stepped outside. let me show you a live picture. like you both said, don't let this picture fool you. it looks beautiful. as we look from our emeryville camera. but look at this 39 right now in livermore. it is 49 in oakland, 50 in san jose. as you will notice in the north bay already in the 30s. 38 in santa rosa, 37

in novato. frost advisory goes up for the north and east bay valleys and hills. it is up right now until 9 a.m. tomorrow, temperatures dropping to the mid 30s in those locations, which means frost will form. i think some of our inland areas will start out in the low 30s. temperatures will rise quickly into the afternoon, into the low 60s, and around the bay from the 40s to the 50s, eventually to the 60s. some high clouds and sunshine along the coastline. you're going to go from the 40s to the low 60s. i'll be back with a full look at that weekend forecast coming right up. karina. >> all right. sandhya, thank you. it is black friday, which is viewed as the official kickoff to the holiday shopping season. billions of dollars are spent on gifts, and while online shopping continues to grow, some people still like to go to the store. the outlet mall was the place to be in livermore today for black friday. sky seven video shows what looks to be every parking spot occupied at the san francisco premium

outlets. the traffic gridlock backed up along interstate 580. there there were lines of people waiting to get into most of the stores. it was a similar scene at santa ana row in san jose. parking lots were crowded and so were nearby streets. many stores offered exclusive deals for early risers and black friday shoppers also kept busy today at serramonte center in daly city, many stores were offering big discounts, some up to 40% off anytime between now and christmas eve. >> bring a new, unwrapped toy for charity to santa's village at the mall and you can win prizes as san francisco's marquee shopping district, union square has been reeling since macy's announcement that it was going to close its flagship store. >> but black friday brought people back to enjoy the holiday traditions while they still can. >> abc seven news reporter lena howland has the story.

see engineering feats to help thwart any kind of crimes. >> but after macy's announced plans to close their flagship location here in union square back in february, many shoppers worry this could be the last year for some holiday traditions. >> that's why i brought them out, because i was worried that it was the last one. >> it's glickman's 35th holiday season, living in the city, even down to the kittens available for adoption in storefronts, she says it's hard to imagine a union square without macy's, and i wanted to remain. >> i'm so worried that if macy's goes away, this will all go away. this is like a staple of our life for his whole childhood. >> while officials have previously said macy's won't be closing this location until they sell the property, it hasn't sold yet, leaving the timeline and next year's holiday season still up in the air. >> it's sad. i think that it's been such a, you know, big part of san francisco and but it's also, you know, we think of our city as an ecosystem. and when

ferries running. half of it will come from regional sources, and the rest of the money will come from the state. it's part of a bigger transit funding package for local agencies to avoid service cuts. the district relies on ferries or fares, i should say, and bridge tolls for revenue. both are below pre-pandemic levels. >> now to an incredible story out of antioch. a pastor takes on a would be burglar at his church and makes a citizen's arrest. antioch police say the man used an ax to break a window at the first family church on thanksgiving morning that triggered an alarm, and the pastor raced over. he came face to face with the suspect and used his years of jiu jitsu training to wrestle the man to the ground and restrain him. police say the would be burglar was trying to take some tools and some leftover food. he remains in custody. while some people flocked to the emeryville bay street mall to go shopping, others were there for a special ceremony.

of a sacred dance held by members of local indigenous tribes at the emeryville, shellmound the site was a burial ground for the ohlone people dating back thousands of years. the dance marks the end of a three mile prayer walk from another shellmound site in berkeley. >> this isn't just a mall that this represents a history of people for thousands and thousands of years. this is a part of the erasure of our people by building on top of our sacred places. >> the ceremony has been held for more than a quarter century, but this is the first prayer march since the ohlone people regained ownership of the berkeley shellmound after a lengthy court battle, a san francisco bookstore had an unusual black friday sale, one caused by last week's intense storms. >> the owner of medicine for nightmares shows how water dropped down from a skylight covering the floor with two inches of water. some 600 books

were damaged or destroyed. those that could be salvaged were displayed for a soggy book sale. unfortunately, this is not the first time the store has been hit with water damage. >> the first rainy season we were covering several sections with tarps every night when it might rain. the next day, and it seemed like things had been fixed this year, and then suddenly that was not true at all. >> four sections of the store were damaged by water and need to be rebuilt. medicine for nightmares specializes in radical books and spanish language titles. in the south bay christmas. the park officially opened tonight in downtown san jose. it embraces the holiday spirit, often with a twist through its decorated trees and entertainment. as abc seven news reporter in the south bay, lauren martinez found out, organizers are hoping visitors will give back this year. >> it's a holiday tradition in downtown san jose. for more than 44 years, christmas in the park is a walk through event that

brings people from all over the bay area together. >> it's a good time out, you know, you get to see all the different christmas trees. you know, it's a good family environment. you know, you feel real safe here. so you want to see, aside from animated displays, hundreds of christmas trees are decorated, each one sponsored by different companie, organizations, schools or families. >> there was a beetlejuice themed tree, a wicked tree, and oscar the grouch. >> so far, i've been looking for my union tree i saw on their social media that they have a tree here somewhere. >> edgar martinez and his family drove from hayward. >> i really appreciate it. and i'm very thankful for everybody that has contributed to put a tree here, you know, for the community to enjoy christmas in the park is a nonprofit organization. >> they rely on these sponsored trees as well as their ticketed drive-thru light show. the managing director said since sponsors have pulled out this year, the nonprofit could run 100 to $150,000 short next year. any support they can get this year will help watsonville

resident april jerome has been coming for more than 30 years. >> very heartwarming. so it just takes me back to my childhood and now i'm seeing my little one doing it. it's very heartwarming. >> her daughter ivy agrees. yeah, christmas in the park is free, something families to enjoy together, even our furry family members. >> joyous. simple. one word. joyous. >> in san jose lauren martinez, abc seven news. >> thanksgiving weekend is a popular time to get a christmas tree and many east bay families are going to a very familiar place. this is the 58th year the piedmont scout troop has set up a tree lot this morning. current and former scouts were busy unloading trees from oregon to begin selling them. tomorrow. the piedmont scouts hope to sell 1800 of them this year, and the money raised will go to its leadership and community programs. >> it's about a third of the

piedmont scouts budget. it helps us provide services to the surrounding community. >> the piedmont scout lot is located at red rock road near moraga avenue. local residents can order their trees online and then get them delivered. another group with a long history of selling christmas trees is the delancey street foundation. residents of the program were stocking this lot in the san francisco's pier 32 with trees. today, all proceeds go to the organization, which offers residential services for people who have been incarcerated and struggled with substance abuse. >> papaya trees save a life, and that's saving our lives. the people with addictions wanted the jail we come into. delancey with a past and we leave with a great future ahead of us because we've changed what we've done. >> besides san francisco, there are also delancey christmas tree, lots on telegraph in oakland, on san pablo, in el cerrito, and at the great dickens fair in daly city. the

workers at the lots are all delancey street residents, hundreds gathered around the old oak tree in downtown danville for the annual tree lighting. >> this is the 48th year of the holiday tradition, but that's nothing compared to the age of the tree. that old oak is about 350 years old. >> a night out at union square, the epicenter of holiday cheer in san francisco, crowds were spilling out of macy's and all the nearby shops to get going on all their seasonal spending. people filled into the ice rink for daetz and family time, and plenty of people stopped to get their photos. with a giant tree and all the festive decorations. i got my picture with the tree already. >> oh right. >> yes, with the baby. it's good to go. and it was beautiful weather. oh that's nice. >> all right. it is a little chilly out there though. >> yes. we had to bundle up if we're going to do that. abc7 news meteorologist sandhya patel has the details on that. yeah, for sure. you need to bundle up. i'm glad you got that picture

though. karina and kristen, let's take a look at the temperatures right now. they are dropping. it is 34 in fairfield, 38 degrees right now in santa rosa, currently 40 in brentwood. you know, we are in for a cold one. but compared to other parts of the country, we're good. i mean, when minneapolis is minus seven, fargo -18, we're talking about an arctic blast. chicago six degrees right now. 27. in atlanta looking at the national picture. yeah, the biggest story is this lake effect snow happening right now heading into the buffalo area. you know, our niners are going there as they take on the bills or the bills take on the niners i should say so snow showers will continue. this is going to measure a foot or more across this region. it may be a little treacherous to travel, especially if you do have plans to head over there. just keep that in mind. now at kickoff 29 degrees, it's going to be snow and breezy. fourth quarter. we're talking about cold and snowy 27 degrees. yeah it's going to be brutal. winter

storm warnings lake effect snow warnings right now across parts of the midwest and the northeast as you will notice, cold weather warnings stretching all the way down towards the south. this is where freeze warnings are going all the way down south, so we are definitely not in that bad of a situation. looking at a gorgeous view from our sutro tower camera of san francisco, we're seeing some high level clouds just kind of streaming in from time to time. a couple of sprinkles to our south. not out of the question. this area of low pressure is sending those clouds in our direction, but high pressure controls our weather. with the offshore flow, we're going to see mild afternoons this upcoming weekend. certainly seeing those clouds on live doppler seven from our mount tam cam, a nice view overnight tonight. chilly again with frost. this weekend. milder afternoons and next week we're going to have sunshine and december warmth coming your way, but not tomorrow morning. so before you head out the door, make sure you grab a jacket or a sweater because it's going to be chilly, low 30s to the low 50s along the coastline. a lot of cloud cover in the form of high
