saturday. good morning to you. it is small business saturday this november 30th. i'm zach fuentes. let's start with a look at the weather with meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning. good morning. well the weather not getting in the way. it will be chilly, so you'll definitely need the jacket to get going. but then we've got a mild afternoon on the way. you see some high clouds to the south of us. high pressure to the north. and combination of those two has really set the stage for a frosty start. the frost advisory until 9:00 this morning for our interior valleys of the north bay and the east bay, where it is freezing in danville, right now, 37 in livermore. we are 50 downtown, 39 palo alto. temperatures continue to drop off below freezing in santa rosa, right now with 34 in napa. just a degree above freezing in vacaville. so nine degrees colder at the coast. these numbers will continue to narrow where it's a little bit warmer, and we'll get into that chilly morning all across the bay. by 9:00. we are in the 40s and 50s. sunny skies throughout the midday hour, upper 50s to low

60s, reaching our high temperatures right after 3:00 with low to mid 60s so slightly milder. high clouds to the south. and you'll notice we cloud up a bit later on tonight. we'll talk about a few more clouds, still mild temperatures, and whether or not we'll see rain coming up in our extended outlook. zach. >> lisa. thank you. a community mourns piedmont comes together to remember three teenagers killed in a crash the day before thanksgiving. abc seven news reporter suzanne phan was at last night's vigil. >> they stood in silence with a common goal to honor the students whose lives were cut short. a short, silent vigil on this friday night at piedmont park drew hundreds of people fellow students, classmates, community members. they came in droves. they linked arms they embraced early wednesday morning. a tesla cybertruck crashed and erupted into flames on hampton road and king avenue in piedmont. three college students died and one was critically hurt. authorities are still investigating the crash,

but they believe the driver may have been going too fast. the deadly crash happened the day before thanksgiving. >> for this to happen the day before thanksgiving, i. it's just i nobody could imagine. >> this piedmont high school student didn't know the students personally, but he turned out to friday's vigil to show his support along with so many others. >> piedmont are very close and tight knit community, and everyone knows each other. it's almost like a family. >> the fatal crash hits home for so many people in piedmont. the students killed graduated from piedmont high school as part of the class of 2023. shay aviano was a freshman when the students were seniors at piedmont high. she knows the student who survived the crash. >> i actually knew him. he he is so sweet. always a delight to be around. >> this father has two kids. he also knows the students involved in the crash. he wanted to be there for the families hit hard by the tragedy.

>> i hope that somehow me and my small way can provide some solace, and i hope that others can do the same for the families. >> friday night's vigil was brief, but impactful, according to the people i talked to. no one really felt like talking about it on camera. a woman i spoke to says this fatal crash was heartbreaking. she says it's a parent's worst nightmare. a grandfather i talked to was moved to tears. he says his grandson was friends with the students killed. >> i was devastated. >> i felt terrible at the spot where the crash happened. a former classmate was at a loss for words. >> there's a lot of things i wish i could tell them now. >> a community connected in sorrow. a community that will need time to heal in piedmont. suzanne phan abc seven news. >> a three alarm fire in vallejo forced people out of their home. it's a century old multi story victorian building and the flames engulfed that building on sutter street at ohio street just before midnight on friday

morning. people were forced to wait outside in the cold as the burned. the building burned. we have to wait until everything is over with to be able to justify what what what happened? >> you know, very much so. worried. you know, i have nowhere to go from here. >> firefighters kept the flames from spreading to neighboring homes. nobody was hurt. but two people can't live there right now. crews are investigating what caused that massive fire. and a big loss for one of the largest mushroom farms in the bay area. fire destroyed about half of a 2000 foot warehouse friday. owned by monterey mushrooms in morgan hill. firefighters had to pull apart a wall to reach the flames, and they were able to save the other half of the building. there's no word yet on a cause. monterey mushrooms is the largest grower of mushrooms in north america. it claims to be known for popularizing the portabella. well, today, the local businesses are banking on small business saturday. i got to

speak with some south bay businesses and san jose city officials about how they're making a push to keep the momentum going beyond this weekend. welcome to black and brown in san jose. >> we do clothing, shoes, accessories, focus on vintage and sustainability. >> monica murray's store has been around for close to 20 years. she says that for them, small business saturday has become an event. >> so fill up a brown bag and then, yeah, it's ten bucks. so it should be pretty. pretty wild. the event will have a dj, coffee vendor and more activities that have kept loyal customers coming back. it's like a love feeling, you know, i see a lot of kids that i've, you know, seen over the 20 years that are still coming to us and just are super supportive and excited about it. all of it. >> a much needed boost for small businesses like black and brown. the city of san jose says it's working to keep the small business saturday boost throughout the holiday season, and beyond. it launched the holiday san jose campaign, highlighting more than 300 businesses in 12 shopping districts. >> when you shop locally, you

keep your dollars here with san jose families who then in turn can invest in the community, invest in their children's education, invest in health care, housing and keep the economy here locally strong with a large middle class. >> we're in the middle of setup is really early, but this is going to transform and it's going to look amazing. >> brandon quintanilla is the founder of culture night market. >> culture night market has activated, you know, landmarks and public activations all throughout san jose for the last couple of years in response to covid 19 helping small, small businesses, helping aspiring entrepreneurs, and just kind of giving guidance to people that want to get their business off the ground. >> this year, it's taking advantage of san jose's christmas in the park, hosting 35 micro small businesses just across the street from that holiday event for the next two weekends. quintanilla says the timing of small business saturday couldn't be better. >> get out the house. bring the family. bring your loved ones. take a stroll, hop on the new trolley. come to christmas in the park. come support the small businesses. it goes so much farther. i promise you.

>> and it's not just in the south bay. cities and towns across the bay area are hosting events to mark small business saturday in the east bay. the town of danville is supporting small businesses today, and they're going to have plenty of downtown boutiques and shops that will be open fri. i love danville. tote bags are going to be available for shoppers at select stores and on the peninsula. the seaside merchants association is hosting an event in pacifica. more than 50 bay area businesses will set up shop down palmetto avenue. it's going to be live music, fun events and free food. that event runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m, and this small business saturday comes after a busy black friday in the bay area. the outlet mall was the place to be in livermore yesterday. sky seven video shows what looks to be every parking spot occupied at the san francisco premium outlets and the traffic gridlock backed up along interstate 580. there were lines of people waiting to get into most of the stores. it was a similar scene at santana row in san jose. parking lots were crowded and so were nearby

streets. many stores offered exclusive deals for early risers, so that kind of explains that black friday shoppers also kept busy at serramonte center in daly city. many stores were offering big discounts, some up to 40% off and happening between now and christmas eve. bring a new, unwrapped toy for charity to santa's village at the mall, and you could win prizes. san francisco's marquee shopping district, union square, has been reeling since macy's announced it will close its flagship store, but black friday brought people back to enjoy the holiday traditions while they still can. abc seven news reporter lena howland has the story. >> reporter the massive macy's christmas tree is up. >> street performers are out, and black friday deals seemingly everywhere. shopping. yeah. >> black friday of course, making san francisco's union square. >> no stranger to the crowds. >> we just love the city so much. and everything it has to offer. and this is just kind of

came face to face with the suspect and used his years of jiu jitsu training to wrestle the man to the ground and restrain him. police say the would be burglar was trying to take some tools and some leftover food. he remains in custody. also in the east bay, police are searching for three suspects after an attempted robbery earlier in the morning in berkeley. the strong armed attempt happened just after 130 near the intersection of channing way and telegraph avenue. uc berkeley police say the three suspects approached a man and tried to rob him. the victim managed to get away and was not hurt. anyone with information is asked to contact police. you can get the full picture about public safety, where you live with our abc7 neighborhood safety tracker. that includes information and trends for san francisco, oakland and san jose. so be sure to look for it on abc7 news.com or on our app. a san francisco bookstore had an unusual black friday sale. it's one caused by last week's intense storms. the owner of medicine for nightmares

shows how water dropped down from a skylight covering the floor with two inches of water. some 600 books were damaged or destroyed. those that could be salvaged were displayed for a soggy book sale. unfortunately, this is not the first time that store has been hit with water damage. >> the first rainy season we were covering several sections with tarps every night when it might rain the next day, and it seemed like things had been fixed this year, and then suddenly that was not true at all. >> hopefully they get a lot of support for sections of the store, were damaged by water and need to be rebuilt. medicine for nightmares specializes in radical books and spanish language titles. and the south bay christmas in the park officially opened last night in downtown san jose. it embraces the holiday spirit, often with a twist through its decorated trees and entertainment. as abc seven news south bay reporter lauren martinez found out, organizers are hoping visitors will give back this year. >> it's a holiday tradition in downtown san jose. for more than

44 years, christmas in the park is a walk through event that brings people from all over the bay area together. >> it's a good time out. you know, you get to see all the different christmas trees, you know, and it's a good family environment. you know, you feel real safe here. so aside from animated displays, hundreds of christmas trees are decorated, each one sponsored by different companies, organizations, schools or families. >> there was a beetlejuice themed tree, a wicked tree, and oscar the grouch. >> so far, i've been looking for my union tree. i saw on their social media that they have a tree here somewhere. >> edgar martinez and his family drove from hayward. >> i really appreciate it, and i'm very thankful for everybody that has contributed to put a tree here, you know, for the community to enjoy. >> christmas in the park is a nonprofit organization. they rely on these sponsored trees as well as their ticketed drive through light show. the managing director said since sponsors have pulled out this year, the nonprofit could run 100 to

and you can kind of cut across in different runs and stuff. it's more open, but it's not. it's not bad. i think they did a really good job of like rebuilding it. >> sierra tahoe needs more fresh snow to open all 48 trails and ski runs. kirkwood, tahoe, donner downhill and diamond peak all open within the next two weeks. we have a complete list of opening days on our website. you can just head to abc7 news.com to find it. so a lot of people hoping for snow. i know we just got through a lot of rain here in the bay area, so let's check in now with meteorologist lisa argen, who has been tracking the forecast and things expected to be kind of dry looking forward. right? >> yes. that's right, 14 right now in truckee and south lake. so certainly cold out there while we have our frost advisory in our inland valleys, the east bay flirting with about 32 in danville and of course the north bay, very cold out there. so with the clear sky, we do have some high clouds on the way for later on today. that sun coming up at 705, it sets at 451. and

there's a look at those high clouds that will visit us a little bit today. more so for your sunday and current temperatures. wow. 32 by the delta. it is 34 in danville and napa, just a degree above freezing in sonoma. there at 33. look at the upper 30s in palo alto with closer to the bay. there milder 48 san francisco and looking at that 31 santa rosa. so through about 9:00 we'll have plenty of 40s and then again overnight it will be cold, but we'll have a few high clouds out there. so probably not the frost advisory, but we will look for those cold temperatures to revisit us as we get into the afternoon. milder temperatures today and into tomorrow, so slightly above average and into the week ahead. that first week of december, looking dry and having temperatures at or above average. here's a look at the next several hours. so we start out with some of the high clouds

there and then going through the afternoon about 130. we are mostly sunny. nice day. and then we'll see those high clouds pulling up from the south, cloudiness up late in the day in the south bay overnight and making for a nice sunset out there into your sunday notice. 230 in the afternoon. more clouds in the north bay, but they'll thin out elsewhere for a mix of clouds and sun into your sunday. more sun on tap for monday. let's check out the rainfall potential for the week ahead. notice it's all in the pacific northwest and not much of it at that. with just a quarter of an inch in seattle. this is for today. through next friday and just nothing down through the bay. so it does look dry not only for the week ahead, but even into the next week. so we're glad we got that rain right. a lot of it at one time, though. unfortunately, 64 a mild afternoon for you in oakland. look for 65 in fremont with upper 60s in the south bay, low 60s in san rafael. so average high about 60 downtown a few

trees from oregon. the piedmont scouts hope to sell 1800 of them this year. the money raised will go to its leadership and community programs. >> it's about a third of the piedmont scouts budget. it helps us provide services to the surrounding community. >> the piedmont scout lot is located at red rock road near moraga avenue. local residents can order their trees online and have them delivered. and another group with a long history of selling christmas trees is the delancey street foundation. residents of the program were stocking this lot in san francisco's pier 32 with trees and all proceeds go to the organization, which offers residential services for people who have been incarcerated and struggled with substance abuse. >> buy a tree, save a life. and that's saving our lives. the people with addictions wanted the jail we come into delancey with a past, and we leave with a great future ahead of us because we've changed what we've done. >> besides san francisco, there are also delancey christmas

reporter jacqueline lee has more. >> hundreds of thousands of ukrainians are without power as russia carries out another massive aerial attack on ukraine's energy system. putin trying to crush the country's power grid as temps drop during winter. the darkness weighs me down, this woman says. the mood is sad, but we have to wait and believe. we live with hope because it is much more difficult for our fighters and guys on the front lines now. president biden calling the attack horrific. russia and north korea expanding their mutual defense pact, effectively challenging the u.s, south korea and europe. putin claiming russia has ten times more missiles than all of nato's combined. ukrainian president zelenskyy saying in an interview to sky news that he would be willing to cede unoccupied territory to russia in exchange for nato protection if it means a cease fire. >> if a ceasefire guarantees that putin will not come back and in this case, i commend

>> yulia zimmerman's sister lives in mykolaiv, the same city her mother fled early in the wa, still living with yulia and her family in tahoe and her heart still back home. >> we were able to talk to her because they gave electricity for an hour and my sister was able to charge the phone, so my mom was able to talk to her and get peace of mind. >> russia unleashing nearly 200 missiles and drones thursday taking out critical energy sites. >> end of november very cold. children kindergarten. i can't start thinking i live in tahoe and i'll just for two days and are painful. >> meanwhile, one bay area man doing what he can to help keep the lights on. >> if you have no electricity, you can't charge your cell phone. you're alone in the dark. >> we first met paul andrews nearly two years ago, after he and his brother co-founded a nonprofit aimed at raising money to send these lanterns to ukraine. >> we've actually delivered over 5000 of these of these solar lanterns. >> now, nearly three years into

the war, and they're ramping up efforts. >> i have a usb plug on the top so you can actually charge your telephone as well. and that's really critical when they're cut off by the bombing. >> the lanterns are delivered to poland. and then driven to university in lviv. >> students there are the last mile for delivery. just incredibly courageous. they've taken them out to places like kherson. they've taken them out to just right out to the front lines. >> as for yulia and her family, she says her mom's not giving up on the idea of returning to ukraine. >> we hope to go back next year. that's just just the hope and again, we don't want to abandon that hope. hope is the best weapon we have right now. >> tara campbell, abc seven news. >> canadian prime minister justin trudeau was in florida last night meeting with president elect donald trump. trudeau was spotted in west palm beach before his dinner meeting at mar a lago. other canadian officials were at the dinner, and this comes days after trump threatened to impose 25% tariffs on canadian and mexican imports

over disagreements on immigration. trump and trudeau had a rocky relationship during trump's first term. a few days ago, trump spoke by phone with mexican president claudia sheinbaum about the tariffs. all right. you're going to want to check your refrigerators, because we have a few recalls to tell you about. cucumbers from sun fed produce are being taken off store shelves because they could be contaminated with salmonella. the cucumbers were sold in 26 states, including california. those in question were sold between october 12th and tuesday of this week. at least 68 people have been sickened. 18 required hospitalization, and the fda says there's also a salmonella risk associated with kirkland brand eggs sold at costco. the manufacturer, handsome brook farms, is now voluntarily recalling nearly 11,000 cartons of its organic eggs. they have a best buy date of january 6th, so if you have the eggs, you should either throw them out or return them to costco for a refund. and bags of vegetable medley medleys

by four earth farms are being recalled. the company says some carrots may be contaminated with e coli. there are reports of people getting sick. the veggies were sold at walmart and sprouts and may also be under the labels of marketside, harvest, and grimmway. the fda says if you have these bags in your freezer, just throw them out. well, yesterday was not just black friday, but also native american heritage day. that drumming is part of a sacred dance held by members of local indigenous tribes at the emeryville, shellmound the site was a burial ground for the ohlone people dating back thousands of years. the dance marked the end of a three mile prayer walk from another shellmound site in berkeley. >> this isn't just a mall that this represents a history of people for thousands and thousands of years. this is a part of the erasure of our people by building on top of our sacred places. >> the ceremony has been held for more than a quarter century,

are not seeing any rain. and we are looking at some of those high clouds advancing into the south bay later on today. as we look at our current numbers, they are cold and this is why we have our frost advisory for inland valleys. you can see plenty of 30s here, freezing by the delta. it is 36, in danville, 34 in napa with 31 santa rosa, 33 sonoma. and that balmy 48 in san francisco, 39 palo alto. so temperatures through about 9:00 will certainly be frosty. and a live look outside there. that sun coming up after seven chilly again with frost around the bay. a few high clouds tonight could mitigate that. a little bit, but overall we're looking for those milder afternoons today and tomorrow and even into the first week of december. so we'll see. plenty of sunshine. not a whole lot of cloud cover and temperatures climbing through the 60s. that would make it above average. here's a look at the next few hours. so starting

out with some of the clouds, then we break out into sunny skies. 2:00. you'll notice a beautiful day out there. here come a few high clouds late in the day. overnight, as we get into sunday, we'll see more in the way of clouds. but this also will allow for our temperatures to come up a little bit into the mid 60s, but also some sunshine out there. so a mix of clouds and sun for your sunday taking you over to the east coast where temperatures 8:00 eastern time will be in and around 30 degrees, and we'll see the temperatures drop off throughout the evening hours. and upstate new york now, the temperature of the lake, lake erie near 50 degrees. so that is warm. we have cold air coming down from canada and strong, narrow bands of that cold air moving over the lake, the warm waters of the lake. and that's going to provide a couple of inches of snow during the game. there will be a couple of feet already on the ground with lake effect snow warnings through today. right on through tomorrow. so typical
