morning we had our inland east bay to our frost advisory. so as we look at live doppler seven, you can see a little batch of moisture to the south. missing us will get into a little high cloudiness later on today. and there's our frost advisory through 9:00 for concord, danville, san ramon, livermore, and the north bay. right now it is 36, in danville and livermore, with 44 in san jose. 54 half moon bay and low 30s for you freezing santa rosa, a degree above in sonoma and napa and also freezing in novato. so 24 hours ago, certainly looking at some cool conditions, but we're milder this morning for many of us along the peninsula from san carlos to mountain view and san jose. visibility has been reduced to a quarter of a mile in concord, about two miles in santa rosa. and this is the way it's going to play out. 9:00, 40s and 50s. clear skies, sunny conditions by noontime, mid 50s to low 60s. afternoon. highs at about 3:00. mid 60s. bay shore some high clouds to

the south and looking at another cool but not as cold. night tonight. zach. >> lisa. thank you. a community mourns. piedmont comes together to remember three teenagers killed in a crash the day before thanksgiving. abc seven news reporter suzanne phan was at last night's vigil. reporter. >> they stood in silence with a common goal to honor the students whose lives were cut short. a short, silent vigil on this friday night at piedmont park drew hundreds of people fellow students, classmates, community members. they came in droves. they linked arms they embraced early wednesday mornin, a tesla cybertruck crashed and erupted into flames on hampton road and king avenue in piedmont. three college students died, and one was critically hurt. authorities are still investigating the crash, but they believe the driver may have been going too fast. the deadly crash happened the day before thanksgiving. >> for this to happen the day before thanksgiving, i. it's just i nobody could imagine.

>> this piedmont high school student didn't know the students personally, but he turned out to friday's vigil to show his support along with so many others. >> piedmont is a very close and tight knit community, and everyone knows each other. it's almost like a family. >> the fatal crash hits home for so many people in piedmont. the students killed graduated from piedmont high school as part of the class of 2023. shay aviano was a freshman when the students were seniors at piedmont high. she knows the student who survived the crash. >> i actually knew him. he he is so sweet. always a delight to be around. >> this father has two kids. he also knows the students involved in the crash. he wanted to be there for the families hit hard by the tragedy. >> i hope that somehow me and my small way can provide some solace, and i hope that others can do the same for the families. >> friday night's vigil was brief, but impactful, according to the people i talked to. no

one really felt like talking about it on camera. a woman i spoke to says this fatal crash was heartbreaking. she says it's a parent's worst nightmare. a grandfather i talked to was moved to tears. he says his grandson was friends with the students killed. >> i was devastated. >> i felt terrible at the spot where the crash happened. a former classmate was at a loss for words. >> there's a lot of things i wish i could tell them now. >> a community connected in sorrow. a community that will need time to heal in piedmont. suzanne phan abc seven news. >> a three alarm fire in vallejo forced people out of their home to century old, multi story victorian building. flames engulfed that building on sutter street at ohio street just before midnight on friday morning. people were forced to wait outside in the cold as the building burned. we have to wait until everything is over with to be able to justify what what what happened?

>> you know, very much so. worried. you know, i have nowhere to go from here. >> firefighters kept the flames from spreading to neighboring homes. nobody was hurt. but two people can't live there right now. crews are investigating what caused the massive fire. and a big loss for one of the largest mushroom farms in the bay area. fire destroyed about half of a 2000 foot warehouse friday. owned by monterey mushrooms in morgan hill. firefighters had to pull apart a wall to reach the flames. they were able to save the other half of the building. and right now, there's no word yet on a cause. monterey mushrooms is the largest grower of mushrooms in north america. it claims to be known for popularizing the portabella. well, today, local businesses are banking on small business saturday. i got to speak with some south bay businesses and san jose city officials about how they're making a push to keep the momentum going beyond this weekend. welcome to black and brown in san jose. >> we do clothing, shoes, accessories, focus on vintage

and sustainability. >> monica murray's store has been around for close to 20 years. she says that for them, small business saturday has become an event. >> so fill up a brown bag and then, yeah, it's ten bucks. so it should be pretty. pretty wild. the event will have a dj, coffee vendor and more activities that have kept loyal customers coming back. it's like a love feeling, you know, i see a lot of kids that i've, you know, seen over the 20 years that are still coming to us and just are super supportive and excited about it all of it. >> a much needed boost for small businesses like black and brown. the city of san jose says it's working to keep the small business saturday boost throughout the holiday season, and beyond. it launched the holiday san jose campaign, highlighting more than 300 businesses in 12 shopping districts. >> when you shop locally, you keep your dollars here with san jose families, who then in turn can invest in the community, invest in their children's education, invest in health care, housing and keep the economy here locally strong with a large middle class.

boutiques and shops that are going to be open fri. i love danville tote bags will be available for shoppers at select stores and on the peninsula. the seaside merchants association is hosting an event in pacifica. more than 50 bay area businesses are going to set up shop down palmetto avenue is going to be live music, fun events and free food. that event runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and this small business saturday, of course, comes after a busy black friday in the bay area. the outlet mall was the place to be in livermore yesterday. you see sky seven video there showing you what looks to be every parking spot occupied at the san francisco premium outlets, and the traffic gridlock backed up along interstate five, 80 lines of people waiting to get into most of the stores. and it was a similar scene at santana row in san jose. parking lots were crowded and so were nearby streets. many stores there offered exclusive deals for early risers. san francisco's marquee shopping district, union square, has been reeling since macy's announced it will close its flagship store, but black

friday brought people back to enjoy the holiday traditions while they still can. abc seven news reporter lena howland has the story. >> reporter the massive macy's christmas tree is up. street performers are out, and black friday deals seemingly everywhere. shopping. >> yeah. black friday, of course, making san francisco's union square. >> no stranger to the crowds. >> we just love the city so much and everything it has to offer. and this is just kind of the epitome of how beautiful san francisco is. >> and this year, uniformed san francisco police officers out on foot patrol were seemingly out on every street corner. >> we want to make sure that the people are able to enjoy the shops, enjoy the restaurants, enjoy everything that san francisco has to offer, and know that there we're open. >> there are also planters, benches and bollards installed outside of certain stores to prevent what's known as crash and grabs, like this one a month ago at louis vuitton.

>> we've partnered with city agencies who are helping our business owners, our vendors in making this place as safe as possible. so you will you will see engineering feats to help thwart any kind of crimes. >> but after macy's announced plans to close their flagship location here in union square back in february, many shoppers worry this could be the last year for some holiday traditions. >> that's why i brought them out, because i was worried that it was the last one. >> it's glickman's 35th holiday season, living in the city, even down to the kittens available for adoption in storefronts, she says it's hard to imagine a union square without macy's, and i wanted to remain. >> i'm so worried that if macy's goes away, this will all go away. this is like a staple of our life for his whole childhood. >> while officials have previously said macy's won't be closing this location until they sell the property, it hasn't sold yet, leaving the timeline and next year's holiday season still up in the air. it's sad.

walnut creek. can you even see it? it is so foggy out there. but despite that, we're definitely seeing traffic moving along there at almost 615 this morning. 613. i'm getting a little bit ahead of myself, but now i'm going to tell you about this story out of antioch. it's really incredible. a pastor takes on a would be burglar at his church and makes a citizen's arrest. now, antioch police say the man used an ax to break a window at the first family church on thanksgiving morning so that triggered an alarm and the pastor raced over. he came face to face with the suspect and used his years of jiu jitsu training to wrestle the man to the ground and restrain him. police say the would be burglar was trying to take some tools and some leftover food. he remains in custody and also in the east bay. police are searching for three suspects

after an attempted robbery earlier this morning in berkeley. the strong armed attempt happened just after 130 near the intersection of channing way and telegraph avenue. uc berkeley police say the three suspects approached a man and tried to rob him. that victim managed to get away and was not hurt. anyone with information is asked to contact police, and you can get the full picture about public safety, where you live with our abc seven neighborhood safety tracker that includes information and trends for san francisco, oakland and san jose. so just look for it on abc seven news.com or on our app. well, a san francisco bookstore had an unusual black friday sale, and it's one caused by last week's intense storms. the owner of medicine for nightmares shows how water dropped down from a skylight covering the floor with two inches of water and sadly, some 600 books were damaged or destroyed. now, those that coulr what they called a soggy book sale. unfortunately, this isn't the first time the store has been hit with water damage.

>> the first rainy season we were covering several sections with tarps every night when it might rain. the next day, and it seemed like things had been fixed this year and then suddenly that was not true at all. >> for sections of the store were damaged by water and need to be rebuilt. medicine for nightmares specializes in radical books and spanish language titles. all right in the south bay. christmas in the park officially opened last night in downtown san jose. it embraces the holiday spirit, often with a twist through its decorated trees and entertainment. and as abc seven news south bay reporter lauren martinez found out, organizers are hoping visitors will give back this year. >> it's a holiday tradition in downtown san jose. for more than 44 years, christmas in the park is a walk through event that brings people from all over the bay area together. >> it's a good time out. you know, you get to see all the different christmas trees, you know, and it's a environment. you know, you feel real safe here. so you want to see, aside from animated displays, hundreds of christmas

trees are decorated, each one sponsored by different companies, organizations, schools or families. >> there was a beetlejuice themed tree, a wicked tree, and oscar, the grouch. >> so far, i've been looking for my union tree. i saw on their social media that they have a tree here somewhere. >> edgar martinez and his family drove from hayward. >> i really appreciate it and i'm very thankful for everybody that has contributed to put a tree here. you know, for the community to enjoy. >> christmas in the park is a nonprofit organization. they rely on these sponsored trees as well as their ticketed drive through light show. the managing director said since sponsors have pulled out this year, the nonprofit could run 100 to $150,000 short next year. any support they can get this year will help. watsonville resident april jaron has been coming for more than 30 years. >> very heartwarming. so it just takes me back to my childhood and now seeing my little one doing it. it's very heartwarming. >> her daughter ivy agrees.

yeah, christmas in the park is free, something families to enjoy together, even our furry family members. >> joyous. simple. one word. joyous. >> in san jose lauren martinez, abc seven news. >> let it snow. that's what they're saying in the sierra. snowboarders and skiers kicked off the winter season at sierra at tahoe resort in el dorado county. and yesterday, hundreds of people were seen on ski lifts and the slopes for opening day. officials expect to see more than a thousand riders this weekend. it's the second year that the resort's open since the caldor fire destroyed part of the mountainside this year. >> obviously, a lot less trees, and you can kind of cut across in different runs and stuff. it's more open, but it's not. it's not bad. i think they did a really good job of like rebuilding it. >> the sierra at tahoe needs more fresh snow to open all 48 trails and ski runs. kirkwood, tahoe, donner downhill and diamond peak all open within the

37. in concord. and boy do we have fog from concord to walnut creek this morning. visibility reduced to about a quarter of a mile. you can see right there. so really slow down out there. it is bad from concord into byron there. and also looking at a little fog in santa rosa where temperatures have dropped off, i should say novato in the low 30s. chilly again with our frost advisory this morning. pretty view there from mount tam. we'll look for a milder afternoon just by a few degrees. and then for tomorrow as well, we'll look for temperatures into the 60s. overnight lows will be cool, and then we'll see all that sun for the week ahead and temperatures above average. no rain in sight, certainly not for the week ahead. and beyond it looks like. here's a look at the clear sky and a few high clouds late in the day, perhaps in the south bay, but we'll reach our high temperatures after about 3:00. and then as that sun begins to fade and set, it will get cold

again. but these high clouds want to insulate us a little bit overnight. tomorrow morning we are cloudy and then the clouds thin out and we'll see a few more clouds tomorrow. but still with the mild numbers, temperatures will be a bit into the mid and upper 60s. checking the rainfall potential for the week ahead. and it is just in the pacific northwest from portland to seattle and just a little bit there with the rest of us remaining high and dry. in fact, looks like into next week as well. highs today then ranging from the low 60s here in san francisco. that's a couple degrees above average 64 in oakland. look for mid 60s along the bay shore. so some of the warmest numbers here. south bay numbers from the mid and upper 60s for you overnight tonight it's chilly with some 30s and more 40s around the bay with a little bit more cloud cover. the accuweather seven day forecast. we've got the morning chill, afternoon sun, mid and upper 60s for some of you, 60s at the coastline. first day of december. we've got a mix of

lowest prices. and legendary costume designer bob mackie joins us in the studio to talk about his iconic designs and a new documentary that's all coming up right here on gma. >> all right. thanksgiving weekend is a popular time to get a christmas tree. and many east bay families are going to a very familiar place to get theirs. this is the 58th year the piedmont scout troop has set up a tree lot, and those trees are going to go on sale today. yesterday, current and former scouts were busy unloading the trees from oregon. the piedmont scouts hope to sell 1800 of those trees this year, and the money raised is going to go to its leadership and community programs. >> it's about a third of the piedmont scouts budget. it helps us provide services to the surrounding community. >> the piedmont scout lot is located at red rock road near moraga avenue. local residents can order their trees online and have them delivered. and another group with a long history of selling christmas trees is the delancey street foundation. residents of the program were

stocking this lot in san francisco's pier 32 with trees, and all proceeds go to the organization, which offers residential services for people who have been incarcerated and struggled with substance abuse. >> buy a tree, save a life. and that's saving our lives. the people with addictions wanted the jail. we come into delancey with a past and we leave with a great future ahead of us because we've changed what we've done. >> besides san francisco, there are also delancey christmas tree. lots on telegraph in oakland and san pablo and el cerrito, and at the great dickens fair in daly city. the workers at the lots are all delancey street residents. and hundreds gathered around the old oak tree in downtown danville for the annual tree lighting there. this is the 48th year of this holiday tradition, but that's nothing compared to the age of the tree. that old oak tree is about 350 years old. all right. and take a look at this. a night out at union square, the epicenter of holiday cheer in san francisco. crowds are just

lines now. president biden calling the attack horrific. russia and north korea expanding their mutual defense pact, effectively challenging the u.s, south korea and europe. putin claiming russia has ten times more missiles than all of nato's combined. ukrainian president zelenskyy saying in an interview to sky news that he would be willing to cede unoccupied territory to russia in exchange for nato protection if it means a ceasefire. >> it was a ceasefire guarantees that putin will not come back and in this case, i commended you about nato. yes, nato immediately, the part of ukraine and we need it very much. >> mr. >> putin accusing the biden administration of escalating the war and creating difficulties for president elect trump, who he called a quite clever and experienced man, saying he will find a solution. jacqueline lee,

abc news, los angeles. >> and ukraine is reeling after the latest assault by russia. abc seven news reporter tara campbell has more on how bay area families with loved ones in the region are responding. >> a devastating russian airstrike earlier this week, leaving more than a million ukrainian homes without power and loved ones here in the bay area bracing. >> we did just speak to my sister, who continues living in her home. they have no power. >> yulia zimmerman's sister lives in mykolaiv, the same city her mother fled early in the wa, still living with yulia and her family in tahoe and her heart still back home. >> we were able to talk to her because they gave electricity for an hour and my sister was able to charge the phone, so my mom was able to talk to her and get peace of mind. >> russia unleashing nearly 200 missiles and drones thursday. taking out critical energy sites. >> end of november. very cold. children kindergarten. i can't start thinking. i live in tahoe

and outages for two days are painful. >> meanwhile, one bay area man doing what he can to help keep the lights on. >> if you have no electricity, you can't charge your cell phone. you're alone in the dark. >> we first met paul andrews nearly two years ago, after he and his brother co-founded a nonprofit aimed at raising money to send these lanterns to ukraine. >> we've actually delivered over 5000 of these. of these solar lanterns. >> now, nearly three years into the war, and they're ramping up efforts. >> i have a usb plug on the top, so you can actually charge your telephone as well. and that's really critical when they're cut off by the bombing. >> the lanterns are delivered to poland and then driven to university in lviv. >> students there are the last mile for delivery. just incredibly courageous. they've taken them out to places like kherson. they've taken them out to just right out to the front lines. >> as for yulia and her family, she says her mom's not giving up on the idea of returning to

ukraine. >> we hope to go back next year. that's just just the hope. and again, we don't want to abandon that hope. hope is the best weapon we have right now. >> tara campbell, abc seven news. >> canadian prime minister justin trudeau is in florida. last night meeting with president elect donald trump. trudeau was spotted in west palm beach before his dinner meeting at mar a lago. another canadian officials were at the dinner. this comes days after trump threatened to impose 25% tariffs on canadian and mexican imports over disagreements on immigration. trump and trudeau had a rocky relationship during trump's first term, and a few days ago, trump spoke by phone with mexican president claudia sheinbaum about the tariffs. all right. you're going to want to check your refrigerator because we have a few recalls to tell you about. first, we'll start with cucumbers from sun fed produce that are being taken off store shelves because they could be contaminated with salmonella. the cucumbers were sold in 26 states, including right here in california, and those in question were sold between

october 12th and tuesday of this week. at least 68 people have been sickened and 18 required hospitalization. and the fda says there's also a salmonella risk with kirkland brand eggs sold at costco. the manufacturer, handsome brook farms, is now voluntarily recalling nearly 11,000 cartons of its organic eggs. they have a best buy date of january 6th, so if you have the eggs, you should either throw them out or return them to costco for a refund. and bags of vegetable medleys by four farms are being recalled. the company says some carrots may be contaminated with e coli, and there are reports of people getting sick. the veggies were sold at walmart and sprouts, and may also be under the labels of marketside, harvest, and grimmway. the fda says if you have these bags in your freezer, just throw them out. all right. yesterday was not just black friday, but also native american heritage day. that drumming there is part of a sacred dance held by members of local
