home under dangerous conditions as a massive winter storm system takes aim at the northeast and mid-atlantic. from michigan to upstate new york, millions on alert for lake-effect snow. residents in erie, pennsylvania, waking up to several inches of snow blanketing their neighborhoods. in ohio, whiteout conditions making visibility difficult. nearly one to two inches hitting the ground per hour. drone footage in castle hill showing ice and snow covering acres of land. new york governor kathy hochul declaring a disaster emergency and announcing a ban for empty commercial vehicles on major highways including i-90 and i-86 only to make room for the hundreds of crews scrambling to clear and treat the roads. buffalo also in the bull's eye. the bills calling on their super fans to clear out highmark stadium ahead of sunday's home game against the 49ers. >> it is possible and the most likely scenario there will be 20 or 30 inches of snow that will have fallen at the football stadium by game time. >> reporter: the blistering winter storm also snarling air travel.

this morning, hundreds of flights delayed ahead of tomorrow. the busiest travel day of the thanksgiving stretch when tsa expects to screen 3 million passengers. all right, listen up. if you are driving home, and you live in some of these areas for snow it's not actually advised. it's best to get going any time before 1:00 p.m. for the rest of you, you can see the evening hours saturday and sunday, that is a no go. monday, your window is tighter when you want to leave before 8:00 a.m. or after 7:00, gio. >> gio: very early in the morning or very late at night. all right. morgan, thank you so much. now to more on whiteout conditions, winter weather alerts now in effect and meteorologist somara theodore is tracking it all. good morning, somara. >> somara: good morning, gio. that they are. we saw some prolific snow in gaylord, michigan. they saw two feet of snow in one day. that is a record for them for all-time snow in one day. and that has prompted many warnings throughout the u.p. of michigan and have lake-effect snow warnings from cleveland to erie right on into buffalo, new york, there, so if you look at

the futurecast, this tells us where the snow will be in the coming hours. we have these streaks, these thin snow band lines dumping heavy snow in places like cleveland where they could see one to two feet of snow along lake erie. watertown, check that out, three to five feet, but there are some parts that could see up to six feet of snow. just to give you perspective, the water temperatures over these lakes are ranging between the 40s and about 50 degrees. notice the air temperature just off the lakes, so when we get that warm water and that air moving over it, that's when we start to see that lake-effect snow turn on like a machine. down south they're also shivering. freeze alerts are in effect. very cold conditions for mobile, alabama, jackson, tallahassee, right on into the carolinas. that's a look at the forecast. whit, back to you. >> whit: a lot to watch. somara, thank you. we'll check in in just a bit. this morning we're learning more about the meeting overnight between president-elect trump and canadian prime minister justin trudeau amid reports that canada may consider retaliatory tariffs against the

united states. abc's jay o'brien joins us now from mar-a-lago with the latest. jay, good morning. >> reporter: yeah, whit, good morning. overnight president-elect donald trump having an unannounced dinner at his mar-a-lago club with canadian prime minister justin trudeau. trudeau making that surprise trip to florida after trump threatened 25% sweeping across the board tariffs on goods from canada and mexico until both countries stop what trump claims is a flow of drugs and illegal migrants. now, incoming pennsylvania senator david mccormick posting on x a photo of the dinner saying that he's excited to shake things up in washington with trump, and you can see at the table at the dinner trump's choice for interior secretary and secretary of commerce, and trudeau bringing along with him his public safety minister. trudeau telling reporters before he left that tariffs would hurt not just canadians, but americans too. canada is america's second largest trading partner, second only to mexico.

those two countries together account for $1 trillion in trade a year, and tariffs could include rising costs on everything from cars to electronics to fresh fruits and vegetables, and also there's concerns this morning that canada and mexico could implement their own tariffs in response to trump if he follows through on his threats. now, mexico's president, who spoke with trump just days ago, saying that she believes negotiations are still possible and that a trade war between the u.s. and mexico can still be avoided, rhiannon. >> rhiannon: all right. our thanks to jay o'brien there. now, let's turn overseas to the surprise attack by rebels in syria. anti-government forces storming into the country's biggest city. it is a civil war that's been simmering for years now. it is adding to the volatile situation in the mideast. let's get more from london and abc's ines de la cuetara. good morning, ines. >> reporter: good morning, rhiannon. yeah, and rebel fighters say they have taken control of a majority of aleppo after reaching the heart of the city, the first time that's

happened since 2016. overnight, thousands of rebel fighters in syria making startling advances, breaching the city of aleppo for the first time in years, part of a surprise offensive against the assad regime in northwestern syria launched just three days ago and moving swiftly to seize several towns and villages along the way. video showing explosions seen in the distance from aleppo and strikes near the city reducing various buildings to rubble. rebels riding captured tanks and equipment. an insurgent commander issuing this recorded message calling on aleppo's residents to cooperate with their forces. the rebels' gains appearing to reignite a civil war that never ended that started in 2011 after the assad regime brutally cracked down on opposition protests, but the front lines have been largely frozen by years led by a jihadist group, and this is aimed at deterring russia and iran from bombing their stronghold as two of assad's main allies, russia and hezbollah, are busy fighting wars of their own.

russia in ukraine. hezbollah against israel. and, guys, russian state media is now reporting that russian jets are fighting back, launching air raids in parts of aleppo overnight and the syrian observatory for human rights says at least 287 people have been killed since the rebes' surprise offensive began, gio. >> gio: a dangerous situation there in aleppo. thank you so much. amazon workers are making their voices heard during one of the busiest shopping weekends of the holiday season. workers in more than 20 countries, including right here in america, of course, are demonstrating over increased wages, improved working conditions, and the right for employees to be permitted to unionize. they're calling it the make amazon pay days of resistance. it's scheduled to last all weekend long through cyber monday. whit? >> whit: gio, we turn now to the controversy in women's college volleyball and how some schools are forfeiting games because they say a rival program has a transgender athlete. abc's jaclyn lee joins us now.

jaclyn, good morning. >> whit, good morning, yes. a lot of controversy, indeed. the argument here is whether she should be allowed to play. a federal judge just ruled that the san jose state women's team is eligible to play with its full roster in the mountain west volleyball championship tournament, which includes that player. this ruling is the latest in a controversy that has played out most of the season. boise state pulling out of the tournament in protest saying in part that the decision was not an easy one and the team should not have to forgo this opportunity while waiting for a more thoughtful and better system that serves all athletes. san jose state is seeded second in the conference tournament after receiving six forfeit victories from these boycotts. now, it all started after volleyball players from various schools within the mountain west conference and even a player and assistant coach on san jose filed a lawsuit that said this player should not be allowed to participate because they say she is transgender.

in the past, multiple mountain west members forfeited their matches over this issue. nevada's players saying they refuse to participate in any match that advances in justice against female athletes. the volleyball player has not spoken about her identity saying san jose state has not commented due to federal privily saws but the university looks forward to competing for a championship that takes place later today. rhiannon? >> rhiannon: the controversy there continues. jaclyn lee, thank you. now we turn to the top of the world as global tensions find a new stage in the warming arctic with russia, china, and the u.s. all putting forces on display. abc's stephanie ramos explains. >> reporter: this morning, growing concern over the arctic where russian and chinese warships have stepped up military cooperation in recent weeks, and bombers from both countries seen patrolling the skies near alaska in july for the first time. the resource-rich arctic now a new point of tension as the

u.s., china and russia see new opportunities. in a region where rising temperatures have caused the polar ice sheet to recede, there are now sea lanes and shipping routes opening up. we traveled to alaska where u.s. special operation teams are preparing for any conflict in the region. we are with a team of green berets as they operate in the arctic. we follow them to the closest point to russia on the american mainland. >> some of the areas where our outstations are at, less than three miles away from russia. so the actions that our personnel and the operations that our personnel are taking on the ground there, they are going to elicit a response in some form or fashion. >> reporter: this is polar dagger, a mission intended to show russia's decision makers what the u.s. military can do in the remote areas of the arctic. >> just being in this location rapidly deploying, rapidly force projecting is going to cause a reaction that then we can look

at for future operations. >> reporter: but the goal is to keep the artic stable and prevent the risk of miscalculation with russia and china as they increase their operations in the region. colonel matthew tucker says the military's ability to operate here shouldn't be taken as a threat. >> the bering strait is literally right here. we need to make sure that we have freedom of navigation within the bering strait and ensure our ability to deploy here in a crisis or conflict is something we need to be able to do on behalf of the nation. >> reporter: for "good morning america," stephanie ramos, wales, alaska. >> gio: a fascinating report. stephanie, thank you so much. and some cucumbers across the country here and canada have been recalled because of a potential salmonella contamination. federal officials are investigating an outbreak linked to cucumbers, making at least 68 people sick across 19 states. arizona company sunfed produce has recalled cucumbers sold from

bar. >> reporter: while over at target, swifties started camping out at 11:30 p.m. thanksgiving night. these fans in chicago braving freezing temps to snap up exclusive in-store taylor swift merch. >> it's really cold, but we're here to get taylor swift's tour book and her latest vinyl drop. >> reporter: while many consumers hit the stores, others shopped from the warmth and comfort at home. adobe analytics say consumers spent a record $10.8 billion online on black friday. that number is expected to climb during the next main shopping event, cyber monday. many of those deals already live like $100 off these beats solo 4 headphones at amazon. walmart slashing the price of this macbook air by 100 bucks and for gamers target has the new nintendo switch oled mario kart bundle at 21% off. that's a $75 savings, but

already there. giving the aesthetic is the winter weather advisory. so some snow will be falling pretty shortly in the morning here. we have winter weather advisories stetching from st. louis to louisville and pikesville to see where it will traverse, one to four inches potentially of snow. not a big snowmaker but snow nonetheless. by 2:00 p.m., st. louis, it's your turn. by 11:00 p.m. just north of louisville, part of cincinnati and then into the early morning hours on sunday, that's when we see it slam into places like west virginia there. now, we're also monitoring this system. look at that. we have snow moving into the northeast by the middle of the week. that's a look at the forecast

out over the holiday weekend. >> straight ahead and straight in. georgia wins it. >> reporter: overnight a thriller ending. georgia outlasting georgia tech, 42-40 after eight overtime periods. >> a win here tonight would be an epic comeback, would secure a college football playoff spot. >> reporter: the bulldogs didn't get their first lead in the game until the first overtime. this emotional win now catapulting georgia into the s.e.c. championship game next week. >> our seniors, our team, our leadership, they don't flinch, and they find a way, 14 points down with 5 minutes left. >> reporter: college football treating us to an exciting slate of games full of drama on week 14 with a packed thanksgiving weekend of rivalries. wisconsin hosting minnesota as the gophers barreled through another victory and cementing their 22 consecutive season streak at a bowl appearance, but the win belonging to coach p.j. fleck, who has won seven bowl wins for the third time in
