the local stores. banking on your business for small business saturday. good morning to you. it's saturday, november 30th. small business saturday i'm zach fuentes. here's a look at the weather with meteorologist lisa argen. as people get out and about for small business saturday. >> yes. starting out with the layers. and then they'll be peeled off this afternoon as temperatures get a little bit of a nudge upward. there's a look at some high clouds. live doppler seven. and as we look at our frost advisory, we've got another hour of that. and it is certainly foggy in concord and walnut creek this morning, so be careful. zero visibility there. 49 san francisco and oakland with 38, in redwood city. nice and sunny here, but temperatures are cold. 27 in petaluma. 30 few in santa rosa, with 34 by the delta and all of that fog in our inland east bay parts of it. anyway. we're milder, though, on the peninsula, mountain view and san jose, and there is wind out there as well. so there's the visibility byron to concord and even up in novato, visibility is

limited. so there we go with a sunny start and temperatures in the upper 50s to low 60s noontime by about 3:00. we see some mid 60s along the bay shore. increasing high clouds into the south bay. we'll talk about a little bit more cloud cover, but still milder for your sunday in a few minutes. zach. >> lisa. thank you. a community mourns. piedmont comes together to remember three teenagers killed in a crash the day before thanksgiving. abc seven news reporter suzanne phan was at last night's vigil. >> they stood in silence with a common goal to honor the students whose lives were cut short. a short, silent vigil on this friday night at piedmont park drew hundreds of people fellow students, classmates, community members. they came in droves. they linked arms. they embraced. early wednesday morning, a tesla cybertruck crashed and erupted into flames on hampton road and king avenue in piedmont. three college students died and one was critically hurt. authorities are still investigating the crash,

but they believe the driver may have been going too fast. the deadly crash happened the day before thanksgiving. >> for this to happen the day before thanksgiving, it's just . nobody could imagine. >> this piedmont high school student didn't know the students personally, but he turned out to friday's vigil to show his support, along with so many others. >> piedmont is a very close and tight knit community, and everyone knows each other. it's almost like a family. >> the fatal crash hits home for so many people in piedmont. the students killed graduated from piedmont high school as part of the class of 2023. she. ottaviano was a freshman when the students were seniors at piedmont high. she knows the student who survived the crash. >> i actually knew him. he he is so sweet. always a delight to be around. >> this father has two kids. he also knows the students involved in the crash. he wanted to be there for the families hit hard

by the tragedy. >> i hope that somehow me and my small way can provide some solace, and i hope that others can do the same for the families. >> friday night's vigil was brief, but impactful, according to the people i talked to. no one really felt like talking about it on camera. a woman i spoke to says this fatal crash was heartbreaking. she says it's a parent's worst nightmare. a grandfather i talked to was moved to tears, he says his grandson was friends with the students killed. >> i was devastated. >> i felt terrible at the spot where the crash happened. a former classmate was at a loss for words. >> there's a lot of things i wish i could tell them now. >> a community connected in sorrow. a community that will need time to heal in piedmont. suzanne phan abc seven news. >> a three alarm fire in vallejo forced people out of their home to century old multi story victorian building and the flames engulfed that building on sutter street at ohio street just before midnight and friday

morning. people were forced to wait outside in the cold as that building burned. we have to wait until everything is over with to be able to justify what what what happened? >> you know, very much so worried. you know, i have nowhere to go from here. >> firefighters kept the flames from spreading to neighboring homes, and nobody was hurt. but two people can't live there right now. crews are investigating what caused that massive fire and a big loss for one of the largest mushroom farms in the bay area. fire destroyed about half of a 2000 foot warehouse friday, owned by monterey mushrooms in morgan hill. firefighters had to pull apart a wall to reach the flames. they were able to save the other half of the building. there's no word yet on a cause. and monterey mushrooms is the largest grower of mushrooms in north america. claims to be known for popularizing the portabella. all right. today, local businesses are banking on small business saturday. i got

to speak with some south bay businesses and san jose city officials about how they're making a push to keep the momentum going beyond this weekend. welcome to black and brown in san jose. >> we do clothing,, accessories, focus on vintage and sustainability. >> monica murray's store has been around for close to 20 years. she says that for them, small business saturday has become an event. >> so fill up a brown bag and then, yeah, it's ten bucks. so it should be pretty. pretty wild. >> the event will have a dj coffee vendor, and more activities that have kept loyal customers coming back. >> it's like a love feeling, you know, i see a lot of kids that i've, you know, seen over the 20 years that are still coming to us and just are super supportive and excited about it. >> all of it. a much needed boost for small businesses like black and brown. the city of san jose says it's working to keep the small business. saturday boost throughout the holiday season and beyond. it launched the holiday san jose campaign, highlighting more than 300 businesses in 12 shopping districts. >> when you shop locally, you

keep your dollars here with san jose families, who then in turn can invest in the community, invest in their children's education, invest in health care, housing and keep the economy here locally strong with a large middle class. >> we're in the middle of setup is really early, but this is going to transform and it's going to look amazing. >> brandon quintanilla is the founder of culture night market. >> culture night market has activated. you know, landmarks and public activations all throughout san jose for the last couple of years in response to covid 19 helping small, small businesses, helping aspiring entrepreneurs and just kind of giving guidance to people that want to get their business off the ground. this year, it's taking advantage of san jose's christmas in the park, hosting 35 micro small businesses just across the street from that holiday event for the next two weekends. >> quintanilla says the timing of small business saturday couldn't be better. >> get out the house, bring the family. bring your loved ones. take a stroll, hop on the new trolley. come to christmas in the park. come support the small businesses. it goes so much farther. i promise you.

>> and it's not just in the south bay cities and towns across the bay area are hosting events to mark small business saturday in the east bay. the town of danville is supporting small businesses today. they're going to have plenty of downtown boutiques and shops that will be open fri. i love danville tote bags will be available for shoppers at select stores and on the peninsula. the seaside merchants association is hosting an event in pacifica. more than 50 bay area businesses will set up shop down palmetto avenue. there's going to be live music, fun events, free food that runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and so this small business saturday, of course, comes after a busy black friday in the bay area, and the outlet mall was the place to be in livermore yesterday. that sky seven video there showing you what looks to be every parking spot occupied at the san francisco premium outlets. and there's a traffic gridlock backed up along interstate 580. and there were long lines of people waiting to get into most of the stores. it was a similar scene at santana row in san jose. parking lots were crowded and so were nearby streets. many

stores offered exclusive deals for early risers. black friday shoppers also kept busy at serramonte center in daly city. many stores were offering big discounts, some up to 40% off. and happening between now and christmas eve, bring a new unwrapped toy for charity to santa's village at the mall and you could win prizes. san francisco's marquee shopping district, union square, has been reeling since macy's announced it will close its flagship store, but black friday brought people back to enjoy the holiday traditions while they still can. abc seven news reporter lena howland has the story. >> the massive macy's christmas tree is up. street performers are out and black friday deals seemingly everywhere. shopping? yeah. >> black friday, of course, making san francisco's union square no stranger to the crowds. >> we just love the city so much and everything it has to offer.

and this is just kind of the epitome of how beautiful san francisco is. >> and this year, uniformed san francisco police officers out on foot patrol were seemingly out on every street corner. >> we want to make sure that the people are able to enjoy the shops, enjoy the restaurants, enjoy everything that san francisco has to offer, and know that they're we're open. >> there are also planters, benches and bollards installed outside of certain stores to prevent what's known as crash and grabs. like this one. a month ago at louis vuitton. >> we've partnered with city agencies who are helping our business owners, our vendors in making this place as safe as possible. so you you will see engineering feats to help thwart any kind of crimes. >> but after macy's announced plans to close their flagship location here in union square back in february, many shoppers worry this could be the last year for some holiday traditions. >> that's why i brought them out, because i was worried that it was the last one. >> it's glickman's 35th holiday season. living in the city, even

san francisco ballet's nutcracker, a cherished tradition set in 1915 san francisco. delight in a fun-filled holiday experience. ♪ tickets on sale now at sfballet.org out of antioch, a pastor takes on a would be burglar at his church and makes a citizen's arrest. antioch police say the man used an ax to break a window at the first family church on thanksgiving morning, and that triggered an alarm. so the pastor raced over and then he came face to face with the suspect and used his years of jiu jitsu training to wrestle that man to the ground. and restrain him. police say the

would be burglar was trying to take some tools and some leftover food. he remains in custody and also in the east ba. police are searching for three suspects after an attempted robbery earlier this morning in berkeley. the strong arm attempt happened just after 130 near the intersection of channing way and telegraph avenue. uc berkeley police say the three suspects approached a man and tried to rob him, but that victim managed to get away and no one was hurt. still, anyone with information is asked to contact police and you can get the full picture about public safety, where you live with our abc seven neighborhood safety tracker. that's going to include information and trends for san francisco, oakland and san jose. so just look for it on abc seven news.com or on our app. after years of planning, the humming sound coming from the golden gate bridge might be silenced as soon as next year. here's a live look from the bridge right now, and the chronicle reports engineers expect to install noise suppressors in 2025. the devices are aimed to reduce the noise at the bridge can make

when strong winds kick up. the plan involves attaching aluminum clips to all 12,000 vertical slats on the railing, and that work is expected to last at least a year, roughly costing about $450,000. staying in san francisco. a bookstore had an unusual black friday sale, one that was caused by last week's intense storms. the owner of medicine for nightmares shows how water dropped from a skylight covering the floor with two inches of water. and sadly, some 600 books were damaged or destroyed. now, those that could be salvaged were displayed for what the store calls a soggy book sale. unfortunately, this is not the first time the store has been hit with water damage. >> the first rainy season we were covering several sections with tarps every night when it might rain the next day, and it seemed like things had been fixed this year. and then suddenly that was not true at all. >> for sections of the store were damaged by water and need to be rebuilt. medicine for nightmares specializes in

radical books and spanish language titles. all right in the south bay christmas in the park officially opened last night in downtown san jose. it embraces the holiday spirit, often with a twist through its decorated trees and entertainment. as abc seven news south bay reporter lauren martinez found out, organizers are hoping visitors will give back this year. >> it's a holiday tradition in downtown san jose. for more than 44 years, christmas in the park is a walk through event that brings people from all over the bay area together. >> it's a good time out. you know, you get to see all the different christmas trees. you know, it's a good family environment. you know, you feel real safe here. so puppets, aside from animated displays, hundreds of christmas trees are decorated, each one sponsored by different companies. >> organizations, schools or families. there was a beetlejuice themed tree, a wicked tree, and oscar the grouch. >> so far, i've been looking for my union tree. i saw on their social media that they have a

tree here somewhere. >> edgar martinez and his family drove from hayward. >> i really appreciate it, and i'm very thankful for everybody that has contributed to put a tree here, you know, for the community to enjoy. >> christmas in the park is a nonprofit organization. they rely on these sponsored trees as well as their ticketed drive through light show. the managing director said since sponsors have pulled out this year, the nonprofit could run 100 to $150,000 short next year. any support they can get this year will help. watsonville resident april giron has been coming for more than 30 years. >> very heartwarming. so it just takes me back to my childhood and now seeing my little one doing it, it's very heartwarming. >> her daughter, ivy agrees. yeah, christmas in the park is free. something families to enjoy together. even our furry family members. >> joyous. simple. one word. joyous. >> in san jose lauren martinez, abc seven news.

>> let it snow, let it snow, let it snow. that's what they're saying in the sierra, too. where snowboarders and skiers kicked off the winter season at sierra at tahoe resort in el dorado county yesterday. hundreds of people were seen on ski lifts and the slopes for opening day. officials expect to see more than a thousand riders this weekend. it's the second year that the resort is open since the caldor fire destroyed part of the mountainside this year. >> obviously, a lot less trees, and you can kind of cut across in different runs and stuff. it's more open, but it's not. it's not bad. i think they did a really good job of like rebuilding it. >> sierra at tahoe needs more fresh snow to open all 48 trails and ski runs. kirkwood, tahoe, donner downhill and diamond peak all open within the next two weeks, and we have a complete list of opening days on our website. so just head to abc7 news.com to check that out. but speaking of snow, i know a lot of the people out there would like to see that so they can hit up, hit the slopes, the hills,

well as concord. but boy you have a lot of fog out towards walnut creek and concord. and the delta. very foggy as well. at 34 degrees. visibility reduced to nothing in concord and out towards the delta. also vallejo. sassoon. there. so be careful with that dense fog. the next couple of hours, a half mile up in novato. elsewhere, not an issue, but we are certainly cold again this morning with that frost advisory. our interior valleys for the next hour or so. and then we will warm up to above average readings with milder afternoons, not only today and tomorrow, but into the week ahead. that first week of december, featuring a lot of sunshine. no rain here. let's track the clouds for you and you'll notice that we are mostly sunny throughout your saturday. this is 4:00 and we'll see a few high clouds stream up into your sunday, starting out with more clouds. and then by the afternoon they are breaking up and we'll see a milder day. so

time to get a christmas tree and many east bay families are going to a very familiar place to get theirs. it's the 58th year the piedmont scout troop has set up a tree lot. trees will go on

sale today and yesterday. current and former scouts were busy unloading the trees from oregon. the piedmont scouts hope to sell 1800 of them this year. the money raised will go to its leadership and community programs. >> it's about a third of the piedmont scouts budget. it helps us provide services to the surrounding community. >> the piedmont scout lot is located at red rock road near moraga avenue. local residents can order their trees online and have them delivered. and another group with a long history of selling christmas trees is the delancey street foundation. residents of the program were stocking this lot in san francisco's pier 32 with trees over there, and all proceeds go to the organization, which offers residential services for people who have been incarcerated and struggled with substance abuse. >> the trees save a life, and that's saving our lives. and the people with addictions wanted the jail. we come into delancey with a past, and we leave with a great future ahead of us because we've changed what we've done.

moon bay 45, in hayward. it is 49 oakland, san francisco. but our frost advisory for another 30 minutes and you can see with that 30 degree temperature santa rosa, petaluma, it is cold in our inland valleys out by the delta, and it is foggy in spots as well. so compared to 24 hours ago, 5 to 7 degrees cooler and a little milder from the peninsula to our south bay and inland valleys. here, look at the fog getting a bit better in concord. quarter mile visibility at the coast. low 60s with partly sunny conditions today and bay shore. well, you're going to warm up. yesterday you were in the 60s. same deal today with sunny conditions, high clouds in the south bay later on and near 60 around pleasanton. but we'll see mid 60s today to upper 60s in the south bay. >> zack. lisa. thank you. we're discovering more about what could be a major development in the war between russia and ukraine. russia has stepped up its assault on ukraine as winter

plunges the country into freezing temperatures. abc news reporter jacqueline lee has mor. >> hundreds of thousands of ukrainians are without power as russia carries out another massive aerial attack on ukraine's energy system. putin trying to crush the country's power grid as temps drop during winter. the darkness weighs me down, this woman says. the mood is sad, but we have to wait and believe. we live with hope because it is much more difficult for our fighters and guys on the front lines now. president biden calling the attack horrific. russia and north korea expanding their mutual defense pact, effectively challenging the u.s, south korea and europe. putin claiming russia has ten times more missiles than all of nato's combined. ukrainian president zelenskyy saying in an interview to sky news that he would be willing to cede unoccupied territory to russia in exchange for nato protection if it means a ceasefire. >> if a ceasefire guarantees that putin will not come back

her home. they have no power. >> yulia zimmerman's sister lives in mykolaiv, the same city her mother fled early in the wa, still living with yulia and her family in tahoe, and her heart is still back home. >> we were able to talk to her because they gave electricity for an hour and my sister was able to charge the phone, so my mom was able to talk to her and get peace of mind. >> russia unleashing nearly 200 missiles and drones thursday taking out critical energy sites. >> end of november very cold children kindergarten. i can't start thinking. i live in tahoe and out just for two days and are painful. >> meanwhile, one bay area man doing what he can to help keep the lights on. >> if you have no electricity, you can't charge your cell phone. you're alone in the dark. >> we first met paul andrews nearly two years ago, after he and his brother co-founded a nonprofit aimed at raising money to send these lanterns to ukraine. >> we've actually delivered over 5000 of these. of these solar

lanterns. >> now, nearly three years into the war, and they're ramping up efforts. >> they have a usb plug on the top so you can actually charge your telephone as well. and that's really critical when they're cut off by the bombing. >> the lanterns are delivered to poland and then driven to a university in lviv. >> students there are the last mile for delivery. just incredibly courageous. they've taken them out to places like kherson. they've taken them out to just right out to the front lines. >> as for yulia and her family, she says her mom's not giving up on the idea of returning to ukraine. >> we hope to go back next year. that's just just the hope. and again, we don't want to abandon that hope. hope is the best weapon we have right now. >> tara campbell, abc seven news. >> canadian prime minister justin trudeau is in florida last night meeting with president elect donald trump. trudeau was spotted in west palm beach before his dinner meeting at mar a lago. other canadian officials were at the dinner, and this comes days after trump threatened to impose 25% tariffs

on canadian and mexican imports over disagreements on immigration. trump and trudeau had a rocky relationship during trump's first term. a few days ago, trump spoke by phone with mexican president claudia sheinbaum about the tariffs. all right, you want to make sure to check your refrigerator, because we have a few recalls to tell you about. first, cucumbers from sun fed produce are being taken off store shelves because they could be contaminated with salmonella. the cucumbers were sold in 26 states, including right here in california. those in question were sold between october 12th and tuesday of this week, and at least 68 people have been sickened. 18 required hospitalization. the other one. the fda says there is also a salmonella risk with kirkland brand eggs sold at costco. the manufacturer, handsome brook farms, is now voluntarily recalling nearly 11,000 cartons of its organic eggs. they have a best by date of january 6th, so if you have the eggs, you should

stick about the size of a telephone pole. >> we grabbed this one from the archives of the united states geological survey. it documents that parts of the valley had already sunk by nearly 30ft between the 1920s and the 1970s. >> that photo is it's something that we use to talk about past events that shows how extreme subsidence can get. >> but now, matthew lees and senior researcher rosemary knight from stanford's door school of sustainability have some predictions for the future. in a newly released study, the stanford team combines satellite data from multiple decades with readings from the ground based gps stations. the result is a kind of three dimensional map pinpointing the areas most affected by the overpumping of groundwater in the central valley, and how quickly they're still sinking. >> and what we've shown in this study is that, well, it's not just something from the past, it's happening now. and what's more, it's faster than it has a faster than it was before, dropping as much as a foot in

many of the years since 2006. >> but with those measurements comes the beginning of a possible solution. when we first met professor knight several years ago, her team was pinging the valley floor with electromagnetic antennas suspended from a helicopter. mapping california's underground aquifers and the soils that run through them. the goal to identify super porous basins and farmland that could be flooded or pumped with diverted water to recharge the sinking aquifers, she says, adding in the new precision mapping data could help do that and more. >> so we are trying to integrate these two data sets. the big picture that we see with our geophysical images of the subsurface, where the sands and gravels, where the clays, and then the satellite based measurement that's giving us very precise measurements of the way in which the ground elevation is changing based on calculations from the california department of water resources, knight's team believes there is enough surplus water in most

high pressure is in command. and from okay, you can see the blue sky there and all the activity going on. 49 san francisco and oakland, 45 in hayward with 40 in redwood city. so beginning to recover. upper 50s along the shoreline. pier 39. and we've got a little bit of wind out there. north wind up to 20 miles an hour around the water, but otherwise the winds will be light. today it is only 30 in santa rosa, 34 in petaluma. so getting out of the 20s. 40 in napa, 37 by the delta and a check of our fog where it is still very foggy from concord to walnut creek, a quarter mile visibility and just nothing out by the delta, nevada. still looking at some fog and our exploratorium camera. chilly numbers this morning. couple more hours and we will be into the 50s and 60s. plenty of sunshine today. a few more clouds tomorrow, but then the week ahead looking dry and sunny with temperatures above average. so hour by hour you see how

bright it is out there. and then the clouds, some of the high clouds begin to move in, certainly, perhaps in the south bay, but it's also a wave of warmer air. so we'll see the numbers come up today, the clouds tomorrow they'll thin out a bit for partly cloudy skies on sunday, and temperatures will be in the mid and upper 60s in some locations and back to more sun on monday. how about lake effect snow? three feet on the ground and then during the game tomorrow, a couple of inches and winds up to about 30 miles an hour. so yeah, a pretty cold one. we've got that lake effect machine going, and that's when the very cold air travels over the much warmer waters of the lake. so the lake temperature near 50 degrees. and then you get these bands of intense cold air picks up the moisture from the lake and dumps it on the other side of the lake. and that's how they get all that snow up to six feet in spots. as for highs today, looking at about 60 in concord, 62 in napa, low 60s on the peninsula and a nice recovery along the bay
