captioned by los angeles distribution and broadcasting, inc. right now, a community in mourning. >> we now know the identities of the three young people killed in a fiery crash in piedmont the day before thanksgiving. their parents sharing memories of their lives. good evening, and thank you for joining us. i'm dion lim. new details tonight about the fiery crash that killed three. soren dixon, krista tsukahara and jack nelson died when the tesla cybertruck they were in crashed. a fourth person who was injured in the crash remains in the hospital.

all were 2023 graduates of piedmont high school and were home for the thanksgiving holiday. today, the city released statements from the families of all three fatal victims. sorin dixon was a student and lacrosse player at usc. his family wrote sorin lit up a room, made friends easily, and had a unique ability to make everyone feel welcomed and valued. krista tsukahara was a sophomore at savannah college of art and design. her family says she'll be remembered for her kind and sensitive heart, love for her family and friends, and her incredible eye for style and design. jack nelson attended the university of colorado. his family remembered his adventurous spirit, saying he cared deeply for other people and had a strong faith. he proudly shared through the cross he wore every day. there is still no word on the cause of the crash. the california highway patrol is investigating, and the chronicle reports the national highway traffic safety administration is also part of the probe. well, scary scene at a farmers market at el cerrito plaza. this

morning. a car crashed through the market, hitting a person. el cerrito police didn't share any details, but a witness tells us that the pedestrian was an older man who appeared to be in his 70s. both the driver and the pedestrian were injured and transported away from the scene. police have not yet released any updates. meantime, police in san mateo county say san mateo and burlingame officers shot a man after he pointed a gut them this morning. they were investigating possible gunshots in a burlingame neighborhood. police say when they arrived, a man pointed a gun at them and ran off. he was found near myrtle and bayswater roads yelling in the street. and police say efforts to deescalate failed. they shot the man when he refused to drop his gun, and he was taken to a nearby hospital. on the peninsula, a scare for a large group of boaters on oyster point this morning. they had to be rescued after being hit by a large wave. the coast guard says just after 830. 18 people, including two children, set out on board a 14 foot long wooden dragon boat.

that wave knocked 15 of those people into the water. the good news all were rescued safely and no one was seriously injured. a season marked by debate and national attention for the san jose state women's volleyball team may be over for match point, and the championship. >> and it's an ace for colorado state. >> there you have it. the spartans lost to colorado state today in the finals of the mountain west conference tournament. san jose state's season has been marked by forfeits, protests, even a lawsuit centered on gender identity. several schools forfeited games rather than play the spartans claiming there was a transgender player on san jose state's team who should be blocked from participating. the school and the player have never said how they identify. >> i don't want to talk necessarily about the way we played. i want to talk about how proud i am of them. they fought all the way through the end.

they showed a lot of heart. they showed a lot of desire. they showed a lot of moxie. they showed a lot of character throughout the season. i don't think any of those things can be taken for granted. >> a lawsuit was recently filed by players from various schools, including one from san jose state. they claim the athlete in question is getting preferential treatment. the spartans still have a chance, though, to extend their season. if selected to play in the ncaa tournament. all right, turning now to the weather. it was a chilly start for the day. many parts of the bay area felt it even a frost advisory for some, though, things are improving. spencer gives an idea of what we can expect in our 24 hour accuweather forecast. >> okay, diane, no more frost advisories for a while. let's start with the weather headlines. we'll start with this one. overnight clouds increase. so not quite so cold tonight. tomorrow mostly sunny and mild. and we have a week of december warmth coming our way. let's start with the overnight conditions. as the clouds increase, they'll lock in some of the daytime warming so we won't have cold weather overnight. overnight lows will be

mainly in the mid to upper 40s, except for a couple of places way up north where it will be chilly. tomorrow. certainly will not be chilly with high temperatures reaching mid to upper 60s around the bay, shoreline and inland even mid 60s on the coast. one other thing to remember though, is that tomorrow will will be a spare the air day as we have an increase in particulate matter in the atmosphere. so a moderate to poor air quality tomorrow. but i'll give you a look at what to expect after that a little bit later on. all right. >> looking forward to it spencer. well, the early numbers show americans speng on black friday. today, shoppers are being encouraged to go small as in small businesses. all of it is an effort to help those mom and pop shops get their piece of the pie. abc seven news reporter lena howland has more on small business saturday. from the east bay. i'll have a blue christmas. >> thanksgiving came and went. black friday had its moment, but now it's time to swing into small business saturday. >> today already it's been nonstop all day, so customers

some more numbers on black friday. the day considered to be the official start to the holiday shopping season. early reports, though, show people were not going to the stores but snapping up deals online. adobe analytics says people spent nearly $11 billion yesterday. that is an increase of 10% from last year. in-store shopping might be a different story. retail next says so far, its data shows a drop in traffic of a little over 3%. the city of san francisco kicked off its second entertainment zone tonight at thrive city outside chase center. all of this comes a little over two months after the very first entertainment zone debuted on front street. tonight's winter wonderland combined holiday festivities, special appearances, and a chance to feature local businesses. abc seven news reporter suzanne vaughn takes a closer look, dancing, dazzling performances and the one and

this story does contain some graphic language. >> ahmed abu obeida is 15 years old. he lost both his legs in an israeli drone strike in february while he was out picking vegetables near his home in gaza. he came to the bay area to learn to walk again. >> with tintin. >> ahmed explains he was hit in the legs, hand and face. his house was destroyed. he knows he's lucky not just to be alive, but also to be among the lucky few cleared by israeli authorities to seek medical treatment abroad. >> farhan al-haj walked with the help of organizations like heal palestine and shriners hospital. >> ahmed and his mom arrived at sfo in july. since then, it has been months of grueling treatments, including strength training for his upper body and learning to walk again. >> ahmed came to me on the verge of death. he was hemorrhaging uh, mangled lower extremities. his legs were pretty much gone.

uh- hanging on. just pieces of flesh. >> doctor mohammed subhi is an emergency physician in saratoga. he's done two volunteer medical missions to gaza. on the second day of his first trip, he was the doctor who had to amputate his legs in a makeshift tent hospital without anesthesia. >> not much in terms of equipment and medications were available to us, and so it made it nearly impossible to save people's lives or save limbs. >> doctor says ahmed is mature beyond his 15 years. >> his soul is so beautiful. you sit and talk to him just for a few minutes and you realize his perspective on life and his gratitude. and i think we have a lot to learn from children like ahmed in terms of their resilience and their ability to see purpose in their life. >> through it all, ahmed says he has learned strength, courage and patience. he's a soccer fan, likes video games, and like most teens, keeps busy on social media. what he is not is a

victim. he says he is young and that gives him time to rebuild a life in service of his country and community in the east bay. anser hassan abc seven news. >> a shrill sound that comes from the golden gate bridge on windy days might be silenced as soon as next year. it is. the noise that has been described as whistling. maybe whining, even wailing. it has been happening since 2020, when the bridge was retrofitted to make it safer. vertical slats were installed along the handrails with the intent of allowing more air through, but they also turned the bridge into a giant instrument. the san francisco chronicle reports. a report to project to install noise suppressors will begin in the next few months, and clips with rubber sleeves will be attached to all 12,000 slats. that work is expected to last at least a year and cost about $450,000. black owned businesses

in oakland are attracting shoppers this weekend, with deep discounts and a little music. yeah, makes me want to dance. the blackout market is a collective run by black creatives with a mission of uplifting and sustaining those businesses. the two day event featured about 40 vendors offering deals for black friday and small business saturday. one. ooh, the holiday of lights and winter wonderland in downtown san rafael had very special guests today. santa and mrs. claus stopped by to help lead the tree lighting and celebrate with the kiddos and their families. they also took pictures with the kids, listened for their wishes for this christmas. it even snowed. spencer. yes, the event included a train through the street. other rides also, vendors live music and activities for the

entire family this season. >> oh. go ahead. oh no no no, i was going to say this is special santa snow. yes, it really is. this season brings out the kid in all of us, doesn't it? oh, it really does. i just love it. and even without snow. i love it. and we're going to be without snow the next few days here. well, without real snow. here's a look at what's happening on the satellite radar. composite image. there is some moisture to our south, flowing northward. it is very unlikely any of this will translate into raindrops hitting the ground here in the bay area. but we will see an increase in clouds tonight as those as that that system moves to our north. the wind is really calm right now. only one location has wind speeds over ten miles per hour, and that's napa. that's not exactly a gusty wind over there. and we're looking at the 24 hour temperature change, which shows you how much warmer it is right now than at this time last night. it's five, six, nine degrees warmer. so there will be no frost advisory tonight for the bay area. currently, it's 54 degrees here in the city. 55 in

oakland. we've got mid to upper 50s also at half moon bay, san jose, hayward and a cool 50 at redwood city. check out this beautiful view from mount tam looking down at the city under clear skies. 39 degrees up north right now at santa rosa. also 39 at fairfield. so those are a couple of chilly spots, but 41 at petaluma, 51 at napa, 46 concord, 48 at livermore. and looking across the embarcadero. let's take a look at our forecast headlines. overnight. clouds will continue increasing, but it will be not nearly so cold as the last few nights tomorrow. mostly sunny and mild, and then next week, first week of december will bring us some december warmth for tonight. let's take a look at those increasing clouds on the futurecast animation. you see them flowing up from the south, and a little enough moisture that's showing up. it will be showing up on our radar screen at about 9 a.m. or so, moving through the gilroy and watsonville area. but once again, this moisture is not likely to translate into any actual raindrops or measurable rain hitting the ground. so by noon tomorrow, we'll be

looking at partly cloudy skies, but under mild conditions. in fact, overnight, because of the cloud cover, the temperatures will not drop very low at all. that's one reason we won't have any frost advisories up in the north bay. we'll see a couple of chilly spots like santa rosa, ukiah and lakeport, but elsewhere, low temperatures will be mainly in the mid to upper 40s. highs tomorrow will be in the mid to upper 60s around the bay, shoreline and inland. even on the coast. we'll have highs in the mid 60s and tomorrow will be a spare. the air day. the first of two consecutive spare the air days. as we are experiencing a little bit of an increase in particulate matter in the atmosphere. so the air quality tomorrow and monday will be generally moderate to poor and it will start to improve midweek. and speaking of midweek, here's the accuweather seven day forecast. and this first week of december is certainly going to bring us some mild and atypical or undecember like weather with high temperatures each day in the mid to upper 60s around the bay and in our inland areas on the coast, we'll see low to mid 60s and no rain in sight. and

we're learning more about the meeting between the president elect trump and canadian prime minister justin trudeau. the two getting together last night at mar a lago amid reports of tariff threats. abc's jay o'brien has details now from florida.

>> president elect donald trump now saying he had a productive dinner friday with canadian prime minister justin trudeau at mar a lago. trudeau making theat surprise visit last night after trump threatened sweeping 25% across the board. tariffs on goods from canada and mexico. trump accusing both countries of allowing drugs and illegal migrants to flow into the u.s. also at the table, david mccormick, the newly elected republican senator of pennsylvania. trump, posting on social media that the two leaders discussed fentanyl trade deals and what trump says is a trade deficit between canada and the u.s, despite the two countries operating under a trade deal that trump crafted in his first term. >> it was a it was a nice conversation. >> trudeau telling reporters tariffs wouldn't just harm canadians, but would also raise prices for u.s. consumers and harm industries here at home. canada is the second largest trading partner of the u.s, behind only mexico, both countries accounting for more than $1 trillion in trade. a year. president biden urging caution. we have an unusual

vigilant if you're heading out of the house and going anywhere, make sure you're checking what the weather forecast might be. >> in buffalo, the bills calling on super fans to help clear out highmark stadium ahead of sunday's game against the 40 niners. >> visibility is less than half a mile. those roads are getting nasty out there. >> in new york city, the mercury dipping into the 30s. the real feel in the 20s. this was the scene in bryant park. folks there bundled up, getting into the holiday spirit. and it could get a lot more winter like in the big apple. a quick moving storm system called a clipper is heading east. >> it's going to bring widespread snow to everyone in the northeast by the middle of next week, likely a little too early to know exactly how much snow, but we are talking about inches of snow for the northeast and even new york city might see their first snow of the year. >> as for air travel, plenty of flight delays. tomorrow is the busiest travel day of the thanksgiving stretch. the tsa expecting to screen 3 million passengers. chuck sivertsen, abc news, new york.

>> well, southwest airlines passengers will have to get ready for landing earlier than normal. starting wednesday, flight attendants will be preparing the cabin for landing at 18,000ft instead of the usual 10,000. that means seat backs will need to be raised and tray tables stowed about ten minutes earlier than normal. southwest says it's all to protect flight attendants from turbulence. moving to the sierra now. snowboarders and skiers kicked off the winter season at sierra at tahoe resort in el dorado county. take a look. yesterday, hundreds of people hit the ski lifts and slopes for opening day. officials expect to see more than a thousand riders this weekend. it's the second year that the resort has opened since the caldor fire destroyed part of the mountainside this year. >> obviously a lot less trees and you can kind of cut across in different runs and stuff. it's more open, but it's not. it's not bad. i think they did a really good job of like rebuilding it. >> sierra at tahoe needs more fresh snow to open all 48 trails

and ski runs. kirkwood, tahoe, donner downhill and diamond peak all open within the next two weeks. we do have a complete list of opening days at our website. just head to abc7 news.com. the famed notre dame cathedral in paris is set to reopen on december fifth. seventh, i should say. it closed down in april of 2019 after a devastating fire destroyed much of the 800 year old cathedral. that fire is believed to have been an accident, not arson, and over the past five years, more than 1200 artisans helped restore the cathedral. building a new roof, replacing walls, stones and restoring 8000 pipes of the grand organ. about $1 billion was raised to restore the cathedral before the fire. 13 million people visited each year. still ahead tonight, a star studded show tomorrow right here on abc seven. we'll get a preview of the wonderful world of disney holiday spectacular from the hosts and get a sneak

one day after their football season ended. the stanford cardinal making big news on saturday. andrew luck was named the program's general manager. luck, of course, a legendary career for the cardinal on the field, a two time heisman trophy runner up before becoming the number one overall pick in the 2012 nfl draft. he returns to the farm in a brand new position to renew their championship goals. >> we do have a vision. we absolutely have a vision. and, you know, i think we are under no illusion about the landscape of college sports as well. i believe deeply in the unique value proposition of stanford and stanford athletics. it's the it's the greatest athletic department. it's the most successful athletic department in the country. we're excited for football to do its part at the home of champions, but we're looking for the best and brightest. i think we got a lot of them. we're looking for tough kids and we will be competitive in recruiting and retaining the best talent out there.
